After two failed attempts in another two restaurants to get brunch on Sunday at 1:30pm, we came to the Butcher Bar for lunch, but surprisingly found out that they actually serve brunch still. Now one of my favorite things about brunch is the mimosa, and all the brunch items here include a mimosa/ bloody mary/ draft beer. We were off to a good start. I remember a few years ago when I came to this place for dinner, I had tried their burnt end (Meat Candy), but I barely had any memories about it, so we asked the server what it is and he explained it's the end of beef brisket cut and rubbed again, they put it back in the smoker for another 5 to 6 hours so the outside is caramelized and tastes sweet like a candy, hence the name "Meat Candy". Tempting enough, two of us ordered the burnt end and scrambled eggs. Needless to say, the burnt end is delicious. For those of you who enjoy the pieces that are a little burnt (or for some, a lot burnt), you know what I am talking about. None of the meat candy is too dry, and all would disappear in your mouth leaving a sweet aftertaste. The salad aside is balancing the greasiness of some fatty meat candy. Home fries is not heavy at all. The only flaw is the scrambled egg being a little overcooked, I like my scrambled egg creamy. Casual ambiance, great server, and more importantly, no lines for brunch, love it! P.S.: They also have a drunken french toast for brunch, which is also delicious, and a good start to cure your hangover. read more

We came here a few weeks ago on a Thursday evening at 7pm. Four of us got the $50 Groupon deal for sandwiches, drinks and dessert which is an amazing deal-- 4 barbecue sandwiches, specialty sandwiches, or salads 4 beers, glasses of wine, or soft drinks 4 apple cake desserts The ambiance is warm and inviting with exposed brick and a bar area with counter seats, but also spacious with seating for probably around 45-50 people in the entire restaurant. Service was gracious to seat us before everyone arrived, and the restaurant was about 1/3 full when we arrived and about 2/3 full by the time we left. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal, all the food was tasty. Two of my friends had been there previously and raved about the burnt ends. Unfortunately they were out by the time we ordered around 7:30pm, which was a bit of a bummer. We ordered two brisket sandwiches ($12.99) and two "Monsters" ($14.99, half brisket / half pulled pork). Each sandwich came with a side of cole slaw and a piece of sweet cornbread. For drinks we ordered glass of the cabernet ($8), a Blue Point Toasted Lager ($7), a Downeast Cider ($9), and a Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin ($9)--which had this unique tingly habanero finish. Aside from the items on the Groupon, we also ordered: - Mac and Cheese topped w/ grass fed beef chili, bacon bits & jack cheese ($11.99) so creamy and those bits of crispy bacon bits were heavenly - Applewood Bacon Baked Beans ($4.99) solid choice - Sauteed Bacon & Onion String Beans ($4.99) not bad - Beet Salad ($4.99) I liked their take with the pickled onions added - 1/4 rack of dry rub BBQ ribs ($8?) tender and flavorful - 1/4 rack of wet sauced BBQ ribs. ($8?) even more tender and flavorful We weren't able to finish all of the food we ordered, but the leftovers the next day were just as good. My friend and I stumbled upon this spot because the original spot we wanted to go to was closed. I'm so glad it was closed because this bbq spot was delicious. We went during the week around noon and they have a Blue Plate Special: pilled xhixken, pulled pork or brisket along w two sides for DRUMROLL PLEASE! $10!!!!!! When we got our plates we were amazed with how much food there was! I got the brisket and it was so soft, I didn't even need the knife to cut it! This is definitely felt an authentic bbq spot! We all know this is a meat lover's paradise. What impressed me most was our server and host Nicholas who seamlessly took on many different roles on a busy Sunday evening. I had to take care of my very elderly parents and Nicholas and his colleagues couldn't have been nicer to meet their physical and social needs. Upon entering, Nicholas was very kind in telling us what the anticipated wait would be but then he did something few people in our society do nowadays. Rather than exaggerating for the sake of making empty promises, he said he wanted to be transparent and let us know what menu items were not available. Given the late hour on a Sunday before the workweek, it was totally understandable that burnt ends and the "fall off the bone" ribs would not be available. Then, upon noticing another menu item just sold out (given the freshness of the products used), Nicholas couldn't have been more flexible and kind in doing right by us. Awesome burger. Went to Burger Klub the month before and thought that was as good as it gets for Astoria. Their Butcher burger is a great signature burger with everything you would expect from such a fine piece of meat. I'm not a fan of thick bready buns and wish they offered different choices. Came here for the first time for a late lunch on a Thursday. Amazing food, great price, delicious drinks and service is amazing. Betty our server was so helpful, explained the menu to us perfectly and had great suggestions, very sweet girl. We got the fall off the bone ribs, burnt ends, Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Butcher Bar is a great neighborhood spot. Honestly, everything I have tried on the food menu (roughly 85%) is good. We never had to wait to get a table, which is probably disappointing the owners but personally I'm not a fan of waiting 20 mins for one. The serving sizes makes sure that you don't walk out hungry and the service has always been warm and friendly. All the bbq meats are solid. But our favorites are the burnt ends aka meat candy, briskets and the ribs. The burgers are all quite good too. I would come to the conclusion that beef is the way to go here! The meats have mostly been well seasoned, smoky, tender and moist. Except that one time when I came in for brunch and the burnt ends were a tad on the dry side. Brunch here is great. The price tag is a bit higher compared to other brunch menus in the area but they do give you tons of food. Also, you can chose your beverage to be coffee, juice, cocktail or draft beer. Not too shabby I say. It is worth mentioning that the cole slaw here happens to be done to my selfish liking. Light and not too sweet nor sour, they go easy on the mayo, making the salad refreshing and just right. The corn bread here is nothing to rave about but the kitchen puts some whole corn kernels into it, so I will give it a wink-wink. Have I had better bbq somewhere else? Yes. Legit barbecue in Astoria! My fiance got to try this place using UBEREats not too long ago and he loved the food so much we had to go together. Yup, I must say the BBQ here was delicious! Like steak houses I don't often find myself at NYC's many BBQ spots but I have had my share of them in the past. I would rate butcher bar four and a half stars. We shared a platter with brisket, burnt ends, and the fall off the bones ribs. My favorite meat was undoubtedly the ribs. They had a delicious smokey flavor as evidenced by the meat and bone color. The outside had a perfect char, and the meat was so tender. To top it off, the ribs were smothered in a delicious BBQ sauce. The sauce was so good that I decided to take some home on my pants. The burnt had had an excellent char and was super crispy. The brisket went well with the table sauces, but I'd definitely order the ribs when I return. We also had an order of their delicious Mac n cheese. It was so creamy with the perfect viscosity. I'd certainly recommend the Mac n cheese as well. The staff was accommodating and helpful. Our waitress was attentive and made us feel very comfortable. Just finished ordering from Butchers Bar and I got the regular burger and a side of Mac and cheese. I would say I am quite happy with the delivery time and the burger. It did bother me that the burger had shredded lettuce and everything was falling out. It was a little messy but I don't mind it. The burger was cooked perfectly and it tasted great! It kind of feels like a rite of passage to get angry responses full of misspellings and grammatical errors from the manager so I'm bracing myself. Butcher Bar is honestly nothing special. I went in person last fall for my birthday and the food was just okay. I liked the drinks. A couple of months ago, my boyfriend and I placed an online order just to see if the first time was a one-off thing. Nope. This time it was worse and it also arrived cold. We're two blocks away from this restaurant and it was summertime. No reason for it to be cold. Aside from the temperature, the food just wasn't packed with much flavor. I've been ordering regularly from Butcher Bar for years. A few things make them a standout for me. The menu is pretty much just straightforward meat and side dishes which they know how to execute well and consistently. The quality and freshness of the ingredients are always a step above. I've ordered a particular salad and chicken dish from them at least 100 times over the years and it's always perfect bang-on exactly what I expect. I don't think I ever felt like I caught their kitchen on a bad day. They also have a genuinely great and experienced staff working there. My order is always correct, nothing is left out, delivery is always on time, and everyone there is super friendly and nice. Delicious ribs and the texmex salad was a little expensive but delicious (way too many onions tho!). Hmm. It's a beautiful place and the decor is super comfy. We were here for brunch so maybe thats why I'm not giving it 4/5 stars.. I was honestly a bit disappointed with my order and even the candied bacon. The bacon wasn't cooked well. It was fatty and not overly cooked and it was room temp, therefore it wasn't crispy. It just felt and tasted as if it wasn't fresh. Main dish was the brisket hash platter and it looked great. But tasted a bit bland. Also it wasn't crispy at all. Potatoes were boiled and stirred with some sort of seasoning. When I order hash I kind of expect for it to be somewhat crispy or have crispy bites. I've been to butcher bar I think 3 times now and every single time I have a great experience. Today was probably the best. My boyfriend and I were sat down immediately and our food came out fast and hot. We shared the burnt ends, pulled pork and 4 sides: mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, string beans and baked beans. (Take advantage of that check in deal guys! One free side!) We were so satisfied with everything. They forgot the gravy but the potatoes were so smooth and buttery that I didn't even need it! The string beans were soo flavorful. The burnt ends were crisp on the outside but juicy and tender. Highly recommend. The service was top notch. They were attentive without being hovering and so friendly in general. To make things even better, they offered a complimentary dessert! I was stuffed but magically made room for the apple cake. Swing and a liner out of the park! I came to Butcher Bar not knowing too much about it. There are quite a few barbecue/southern food places on 30th ave, and we picked this one more or less at random. I was pleasantly surprised! They smoke meats on-site daily, and you have to get there earlier to make sure they still have everything left for that day, because they only make a certain amount. I got one of their famous sandwiches. The menu said it would change my life. Now, I'm not sure it changed my life, but it was damn good, damn flavorful, and came with damn good sides. I even ate the cole slaw, which I usually don't like. There are a lot of other restaurants to try in this area. I'll be trying the other smokehouses, but I highly recommend Butcher Bar. read more

Highly disappointed in my visit here. I thought I was coming to get bbq but instead it was a bad imitation. Came with a group of three and we ordered a rack of their sauced ribs, 1/2 pound of brisket, half pound of burnt ends, Mac and cheese, fries, and corn. When there brisket came out I knew before I tasted it that it wasn't going to be good. Absolutely no signs of having been smoked (no smoke ring) and clearly it was very dry. The "double smoked" burnt ends were also dry and had no smokiness to them. The ribs were fall off the bone but were also dry and packed smoke flavor. The sides were average. The service was good but that doesn't make up for the poor quality of food especially when you consider how much they charge for the "bbq". Anyone looking for good bbq should steer clear of this place because they definitely are not serving bbq just some bad imitation. read more

The waiter expressed the portions were large so to order with that in mind. Well I was disappointed because I told him this girl can eat ! When I saw the portions I was let down. I love this place. I used to come here all the time when I lived in the hood and needed no frills American comfort food-I was in school at the time so this was more often than I'd like to admit. I've enjoyed every meal and side here I've tried but the pulled pork and the burnt ends are my go-to favs. For sides, of course the corn bread and I rarely can resist mac n cheese with my BBQ. They used to be byob which was cool, but now they have a pretty decent draught list with craft/local beers. I'm pretty sure they have a full bar but BBQ and beer belong together. Also, interesting fact about the place, everything is locally and ethically sourced by the owner-a local dude who's made it his mission to provide people with "real" food. So, I'm not a big BBQ fan, but if you're craving BBQ in Astoria, this is the place to be. After being told that we would have to wait 20-25 minutes for a table for three on Friday night, we actually got in just 4 minutes later. When we were seated, Rory, our waiter, told us that there were no more burnt ends, which was super disappointing because that's all I read about on Yelp! In lieu of that, we ordered the pulled pork sandwich ($13), the monster 50/50 sandwich ($15) and the porky's platter ($25). I had the pulled pork sandwich, but I think we all agreed that the various meats were kind of dry, so we all had to use the original BBQ sauce which was on the table. The sauce was delicious, so that wasn't an issue, but I thought I would point that out. While I ate there, I thought that the prices were just a little bit high for the amount of food. Thinking back, though, it was probably worth it. Maybe I don't know BBQ, but I think it would be much more worth it if they knocked $1 off of each item. In any event, the food was delicious. Additionally, Rory was very friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us a rundown of all the meats when he first came by, and he hooked us up with an extra dessert even though we only ordered two.
