While the presentation was 10/10 across the board, the flavors ranged from "nostalgic perfection" to "a bit of a letdown." ​ ​Devil Dog (The Winner): This was by far my favorite. It was a trip down memory lane, perfectly capturing that nostalgic Hostess chocolate cupcake flavor I loved as a kid. ​Lemon Raspberry Meringue: Coming in a close second, this cupcake was bright, fruity, and incredibly fresh. It felt light and offered a great balance to the richer flavors in the box. ​Ube: This cupcake was stunning to look at. However, the flavor didn't quite live up to the exotic profile of a purple yam; it tasted like a traditional vanilla cupcake that just happened to be purple. This is a mini storefront so nowhere to sit, but has a cute display of cupcakes and other desserts. I might have came at an off time, was a Sunday around 7PM, but the vibe of the person working there was so weird. When we walked in, she didn't get up from her seat at the cashier at all and then when she finally got up, she didn't say hello or anything. Just walked over and stood there in front of the display. We got the mini cupcakes which are 12 for $20. Honestly do not recommend these because most of them felt dry and did not taste fresh at all. I would not get these again. I tried another location over ten years ago, and I see that since then, they have tried to copy Baked by Melissa's mini cupcakes. The mini cupcakes here are sold as 12 assorted ones for $20. As cupcakes go, the ones here are just so so. A bit on the dry side and their selection is not as good as Baked by Melissa so I'd stick to the latter for mini cupcakes. They also sell regular size cupcakes at 12 for $45. For regular size cupcakes, I'd stick with Magnolia Bakery that offers better tasting and fresher cupcakes. read more

My mom was raving about this bakery and I finally was with her to try it out. It's not only the goodies but also the people! The brother- sister duo running the shop are some of the sweetest people I have ever met! I noticed one comment mentioning they were copying another shop but this is a bakery with many types and variations of desserts and is not a copy of anyone's shop. You can get inspiration from many places or just try to meet the needs of different clientele by varying your product, and I believe that's where the mini cupcakes came into play in this scenario. In any event, my mom loves the vanilla cake with the chocolate icing. My mom would want to ride up to the shop after her visit to MSK and as a treat to herself wanted a slice of cake, but not any cake. A slice from Buttercup Bake Shop. And it had to be the vanilla with chocolate frosting. This was soo soothing to her. So when I went and saw their huge selection I was amused at all they had to offer. Time to bite into the cupcakes! * First off, we both finished all 3 of ours. And didn't share. Because they were too tasty to share. * They do have gluten-free cups. And some with artificial frosting color. Some without, as the 3 I ordered were. Apple pie cupcake: Has apples inside, has a nice creamy bit on top, spices within the cake itself. I ended up using 3-4 bites for this one because it was tasty enough not to gulp down in a single shot. Surprised there were a few of these left at the end of the day, since many of the flavors were sold out by the time I got there. S'mores cupcake: Marshmallow instead of frosting makes this a unique choice compared to other places. Chocolate part isn't super chocolatey but it all works together well. Lemon-raspberry meringue cupcake: One I wouldn't normally order, but it's what was left! There was really not much raspberry inside (even compared to their website photo), but the cake overall had a nice lemony tinge to it. Overall, quite honestly, I think the cupcakes need to be 50% larger to really make it. I want to support a local business. And the people inside. And the nice flavors. But in NYC I'm willing to take my wallet out a little more freely if you've really got the right stuff, and I can say I've got the same quality in NJ with larger sizes for the same price. Out of all cupcake offerings in the city, Buttercup is a solid and consistent choice. I appreciate the moistness of the cupcakes that also have a good ratio of frosting to cake. I have yet to get a dry cupcake the several times I've been, so that's a definite plus. A variety of flavors, good presentation and not too cloyingly sweet or artificial tasting. Chocolate on chocolate is a win if you're a fan of chocolate (duh!) and the lemon raspberry meringue is lovely if that's your cup of tea. They have other flavors for those who'd like a variety. Ordered a carrot cake for a friend. Service is amazing and they called to confirm the cake pickup location and time beforehand. Cake layers slid a bit during pickup and I had to push the cake to make it less slanted before serving, but that was an easy fix. The writing came out perfect and was centered and spelled correctly. Cake itself is awesome, with thin layers of icing throughout that aren't too sweet. The icing is pretty light and adds a good contrast to the cakey-ness of the layers. The cake itself is very moist and fluffy, making it easy to eat wayyyy too much in one go. Awesome cake, friend was very happy. This place is such a hidden gem, I'm so glad I stumbled upon Buttercup Bake Shop on my afternoon stroll. They have a huge selection of sweets to choose from, but I obviously had to give the cupcakes a try on my first visit. I ordered the cookies and cream cupcake and the cookie dough. Both were some of the best cupcakes I've ever had. Not overwhelmingly sweet and the icing was the cherry on top. The cookies and cream cupcake had an oreo cookie in it which was a nice surprise! The last time we went to Buttercup Bake Shop it was to the one that is on Second Avenue---and that was years ago. This trip to NYC, seeing that they opened a location that was not too far from our hotel, I decided to give them a try. This location is very small as they don't make any cupcakes there. Instead, they are baked elsewhere and delivered to this location. I was there on a Friday in the late afternoon and at that time of day, the selection was limited. However, I heard the clerk tell another customer that they had gotten another delivery but hadn't had time to get them in the display case. That said, I was happy with the selection that was out on display. I chose 2 lemon raspberry meringue cupcakes, 1 apple pie cupcake and 1 carrot cake. The clerk was very friendly and helpful. Later in the day, we each ate a lemon raspberry cupcake---and we really liked them. The cake was moist and you could clearly taste the lemon. In the center were macerated fresh raspberries. The meringue frosting was hit with a blow torch which added an interesting char flavor. All those flavorings worked very well together. Torching the top was, so to speak, the icing on the cake. The next day I had the apple pie one. It had a nice flavor to it with the apple coming through clearly as did the cinnamon. The frosting had a bit of caramel on top which worked very well with this cupcake. My husband had the carrot cake one. It had a wonderful cinnamon-y smell to it. He really liked the flavor and said he would have it again. So...we will be back when in town. Maybe next time we'll try some different flavors. read more

My new favorite cupcakes. I have been to both the Fulton Street location (inside the Fulton Street subway station), and this location several times now. I love the cupcakes here and the staff are always willing to give their advice on what to choose. So many choices! I have tried the twinkie, hummingbird, and a chocolate peanut butter one. I like overly sweet desserts, so the hummingbird was my least favorite, as the cake is similar to a slice of banana bread or a carrot cake. However, I still devoured it! read more

Overall, the cupcakes weren't bad here. Normally, the vanilla cupcakes tend to be sweeter than the chocolate ones. So I decided to get S'mores, which was a dark choc cake torched meringue, topped with toasted marshmallow, and the graham cracker crust. It had the right amount of sweetness.
