Sunday breakfast with the family is a perfect family restaurant to dine at. We come here usually in the mornings but the lunch and dinner is pretty good too. We always split a Churro waffle between us all as sweet end to our meal. It is crispy and soft and never a bad time to have it. We all got different omelets and everybody seemed to enjoy it. The place is clean, with good service and plenty of tables to dine in. The restrooms are clean and well kept. They have a small bar with a TV and I was able to catch scores of the football game. Came here on a whim with a friend we wanted to have breakfast and it was decent. I wouldn't go back and I was too underwhelmed to take photos of the food. The service was great since the waitress that's been taken care of us is our waitress for the last fourteen years. I found out this bite of information when one of our ex colleagues made us aware of this. Great meeting place for great people we worked with in our past lives. The food, well that's little to be desired, the first time I was there I had the chicken fried steak, ho hum, this time I opted to try their version of jambalaya. The rice they used is that horrible converted rice, that's not rice. The dish had grilled chicken breast that was cut up in the dish. I have nothing to say good about breast meat chicken except it should not be served for consumption. This review covers two orders from there. I ordered nachos on DoorDash and they were really good. The jalapeños were super hot tho. They were not pickled or tamed at all so beware. Most nachos arrive soggy and gross but these actually held up pretty well. The Monterey chicken sandwich was good and the fries were great once I put them in the air fryer and crisped them up. Side note..If you don't have an air fryer, you should get one. You can always fix soggy fries and you can reheat things and make them crunchy again. The air fryer makes delivery so much better. The previous time I had ordered a burger and I asked for tomato on my burger. I didn't get fries. I got a bunch of sliced tomatoes, and my burger was so soggy and wet that I had to toss the bottom. You can see the gross pictures down there. The problem is I've never gone to Buttercup and had a bad meal, but there's something lost in delivery. A burger that's sitting in it juices for 10 or 15 minutes is always gonna be disappointing. For that reason they lost a star but if I was eating inside the restaurant, it would always be a five. I was introduced to Buttercup by a friend. We went there with another friend to laugh about life and enjoy each other. Buttercup could not have been a better location. We enjoyed the food (we all ordered the Shrimp and Grits), atmosphere, and out wonderful server May. May was a very good server. She was pleasant, kind, with the perfect touch of humor. May was attentive and gave us good hints about the menu. I must add that May makes a mean milkshake! The Shrimp and Grits was the star. The grits had the right amount of cheese topped with a healthy number of plump juicy shrimp. The sauce... OMG... talk about the right blend of seasonings. We reached our destination in no time, and as we entered the restaurant, we were gladdened to see its cleanliness! Soon after we were seated, our warm and friendly server greeted us! What a vast menu they have! There are too many to choose from! I did spot an all time favorite breakfast item so I opted for it! "Chicken and Waffle!" My husband picked their "Pastrami Benedict" and he asked the English muffin to be switched to a biscuit instead. The wait for our food was not excruciatingly long. Not at all! When our food arrived at our table, initially visualizing them, we could only hope that they were as delicious as they appear to be. Well, what an absolutely pleasant surprise! My Fried Chicken and Waffle, and my husband's Pastrami Benedict were truly flavorful up to the last bite! We ate every morsel! What a very satisfying meal it was! Hooray for Buttercup! First time coming to Buttercup. It has a very homey vibe inside. We came here with a large party to celebrate my husband's late grandpa's birthday. They were able to host our large party in the back, and it was nice to have it to ourselves for a bit so our little ones could run around freely. The waiter was really nice and quick with service. As soon as we all ordered, we had our food and drinks at our tables within 15 minutes. She didn't come to refill waters or coffees, so that's the only negative thing I can share. For food, I ordered the breakfast burrito and was pleasantly shocked by the presentation and how big it was. I thought it would be a normal burrito, but it looked more like a wet burrito, and the portion was large enough to share between two people. My toddler had the pancakes and bacon, and there were no complaints there. My husband had the chicken fried steak and demolished his food. Lastly, my in-laws had the burger and scramble. Everyone here enjoyed the food! I highly recommend coming here for breakfast. They also serve pies, but after our breakfast, we had no room for dessert. I was immediately excited to see options for veggie sausage meat on the menu! Talk about a wonderful accompaniment to my breakfast options! They also had marble rye toast, which I love! The cheesy grits were sitting in a moat of butter, so that was a little off putting. They were still delicious tho! My partner loved her meal as well! I believe it was chicken fried steak. We have come back twice since our last visit. Once for breakfast and once for dinner. When we went for breakfast I got Chilaquiles and my husband got the French toast combo. The chilaquiles were solid, I've had better but they were definitely decent. My husband said the French toast was okay but wish it had a bit more flavor. The highlight of the breakfast was the sausage...they were hearty and flavorful. When we came for dinner I wasn't too hungry so I ordered their IN HOUSE mozzarella sticks...they were huge and delicious! I highly recommend giving them a try. My husband enjoyed his Philly a lot. The onion rings were good but tasted like they were fried in oil that needed to be changed...it was disappointing because other than the bad oil taste the texture was perfect. Buttercup is an absolute hidden gem, delicious food, friendly staff, clean restaurant and restrooms, fair prices and nice portions. They are very kid friendly and the kids menu has lots of options and really good pricing, not to mention the kids applesauce is made in house and tastes so homey and comforting. Then there's the grown up food, it's GREAT. They have the BEST reuben sandwich in Vallejo, and I like it better than Saul's in Berkeley. Their spicy fried chicken sandwich is the best fried chicken sandwich in my opinion, just try it. And I would also like to mention the Buttercup patrons are always my favorite. Buttercup is a reliable local spot for comfort food that is tasty and filling. I enjoy their omelets, waffles, and seasonal salads. If I'm feeling wild (and hungry), things to try based on your mood or time of day are their Cinnabiscuits or ginormous housemade mozzarella sticks. Don't have both at the same meal unless you want to fall into a nap coma. The Cinnabiscuit is a biscuit dipped in cinnamon sugar and then topped with cream cheese icing. They are decadent but so good with their coffee. And you can sub your bread choice for a cinnabiscuit for a small upcharge. It's well worth it. And those mozzarella sticks, they are huge. They cut a block of cheese into 4 very large mozzarella sticks and then serve it with warm marinara sauce or ranch. It's so good and so filling. And I like to order them with their greek or seasonal chicken balsamic salad with strawberries when they have it. It's called balance - haha. The place is very cute and busy on weekends. Came to Buttercup Vallejo late morning on a Sunday. It was pretty busy and I sat at the bar since it was just me. I got the classic breakfast plus a side pancake. Service was really good, although I nvr got a coffee refill. The food was very good, esp the has browns - done with a perfect crisp on the outside but just done on the inside. My over medium eggs were a little on the over easy side. The sourdough toast was tasty and perfectly toasted. The sausage was links unfortunately-I prefer patties-but it had a good flavor. The pancake was a carbohydrate fueled dream. The only bummer was the behind the bar area didn't feel really clean and made me glad I didn't get the Bloody Mary Buttercup is an old timey (read dated decor) coffee shop, but I can deal with that for those hash browns and pancake. read more

Now, with every burger I've had at diners the lettuce always seems to be sad, weightless even soggy; But here?!?! That iceberg lettuce had that ooohh so satisfying CRUNCCCHHH. With the burger patty, red onions, avocado and sauce!!! UUGGHH made me want to drop kick a cop it was that good. Then they gave me a in house made BBQ sauce that I SWEAR it's flavors are locked up tighter then Fort Knox and A nuns legs but whatever they use was smokey, sweet, possibly south of the border and a hint of Memphis but spit fire and save the matches it's a flavor to hold on to. NOW THE DESERT : Bread pudding with a whiskey glaze I'm honestly at a loss for words here, it's still sunny and warm outside but that first bite made me feel like I was in a warm diner mid winter hiding from the snow back east or up north. The Glazing on top was so soft with whiskey like a gentle loving kiss from a family member in the afterlife. I never wanted it to end, but sadly I had to part ways by eating it all up. I have to say this place was a pleasant breakfast outing. I enjoyed the atmosphere it was like a classic American diner without the sticky menus. The inside was pretty big so it can get busy throughout the day. The staff is super nice they are so sweet when taking your order and answer any and all questions they can regarding their menu items. They usually have daily specialty items and they alternate between a breakfast lunch/dinner menus. I got the chicken pot pie which I believe was $8. Not bad at all for the price it also came with a salad on the side. It was a small plate of salad but definitely filled me up a little bit before the pie. The pie was really good it was freshly made and flavorful. The chicken and waffles was so cutely arranged and also tasted great. The breading wasn't soggy and the meat was soft. This place is definitely worth the try when in Vallejo. The pricing can be a little steep compared to typical diners but still really worth the try! read more

I have to admit this was our second choice breakfast location. We started at one location but didn't like the seating, so we left, and my sister suggested this place. Now I haven't been to a Buttercup in a couple years because used to be one by my job that burnt down however I've always had decent experiences (except for my one of my last ones near my job) and I have never been to the location in Vallejo. I am so very happy we ended up there; everyone was smiling; service was fast; greeters were greeting; all the waitresses were helpful even if we asked something from a different server they didn't mind assisting. I was able to customize my meal it was just great! We moved tables because we wanted a booth instead of a table, and you could not ask for more as a customer because everybody in the establishment working was very accommodating A+! I wanted the shrimp and grits minus the grits along with a classic breakfast yeah I paid a little more to get just the shrimp from the shrimp and grits plate and then add it to my classic breakfast with the vegan sausage, eggs, crispy hash browns, and sourdough toast. This is my first and LAST time ordering to go from Buttercup (I usually eat inside and now I see why). I ordered French toast that was clearly burnt and tasted like the other food on the grill (cross contamination). My bacon was undercooked and mostly fat. The service wasn't that great either. Including myself there were 3 of us in line and took over 5 mins before even being acknowledged. Once I paid for my order the cashier gave me my receipt and began helping one of the other customers that was in line..but still didn't give me my order which was ready and on the counter behind her. That let me know that she clearly wasn't paying any attention to what was said. I won't be ordering to go orders anymore and it'll probably be a while before I even go inside to eat. Great local diner with so many offerings on the menu, good food, big portions, and kind service. While there, we noticed there we many repeat customers that knew the wait staff well, so we immediately knew this was a good spot. Restaurant was clean, spacious, ample parking outside (although I can see it become very full on a super busy day). Service was quick and considerate. Coffee was refilled without asking and we were allowed to enjoy our meal without feeling rushed at all. Food was definitely above average - my omelet was hearty and delicious served with O'Brien potatoes and a side of buttered toast (yum!) while my husband's steak and eggs were tender, well cooked and super filling. This place is such a gem! We don't usually go out much for breakfast, but this could definitely become our go-to, especially if we want to bring our kids.
