Came for brunch and got the chicken fried steak. The portions here are HUGE. Would definitely recommend this place for hangover breakfast if you need something fast and filling. Our waitress was extremely friendly and checked on us multiple times. The place seemed packed but she always made time for us to make sure we were okay. You would think the outside of the restaurant has the same vibe as the inside, but definitely not. The lights are dimmed, giving a nice cozy and homey feeling to the restaurant. I would definitely come check out this place again to try more foods. It seems like they're very well known for their pies so I'll have to come try it out again another time. read more

Solid breakfast choice in Vallejo. Both times I've been here there seems to be a wait. I guess they're pretty popular. The bar area is pretty small. I'd guess you could seat 6-8 people there. But there is a TV. Our first visit we were able to bypass the wait by sitting at the bar. The service was a little slow, but they were friendly enough. Ordered the chicken and waffles. Portions are decent. It's a fried chicken breast over a waffle. Comes with butter and syrup. A little unusual the butter came in a plastic to go container. The food was good. It took a little while to get the check. The check is paid at the register in the front-middle of the restaurant. The second time we came here we asked to sit at the bar since we saw some open seats only to be told there is a wait. That's a bit unusual. Not wanting to deal with that we went elsewhere that day. I saw the Buttercup a few times, and also wanted to check-it-out one of these days. Today is the day. I'm here in Vallejo tonight. This spot looks like an old fashioned, classic, charming, and cozy Diner in here. I knew what I exactly wanted, and that's only one thing. I had to get the Tuna Melt Sandwhich. The Tuna Melt is classic as a Turkey Holiday Sandwhich, Roast Beef Sandwhich, and Japanese Egg Tomago Sandwhich たまご. I could've gotten it with French Fries or Curly Fries, but I opted to get something healthier this time, and got a cup of Melon, Cantaloupe, and Strawberries instead. The Tuna Melt was out of this world. It was so flavorful. The Bread was toasted perfectly. This is way better than a regular Tuna Melt Sandwhich you get from the Deli at a typical Supermarket out there. This feels Artisanal, warm, wholesome, and homemade. This was one of the best Tuna Melt I ever had. It was very solid. I also appreciated the fresh Melon, it cut through the Sandwhich just right. And I enjoyed, and really liked the atmosphere here. I just wanted to update my review on this location. I am going to make it short and sweet. I ordered the Prime Rib dinner through Doordash and the bread pudding. The Prime Rib dinner was well packaged and cooked the way I wanted (medium rare). Do NOT ever order the bread pudding through doordash. The bread pudding arrives cold and you have to heat it up yourself. I totally didn't expect that. The last time I dined in, the service was excellent. I highly recommend all the burgers on their menu. In my opinion, I think the burgers at Buttercup are one of the best in town. The one thing that needed improvement was the Shirley temples. Whoever made it, didn't add enough grenadine. read more

This review is based on having appropriate expectations. My expectations were met because I was looking for a diner that wasn't Denny's or IHOP so we could have breakfast for dinner. So it didn't matter that they didn't have a salad I'd want to eat or something more healthy. Veggie omelette with hash browns? Check! Chicken fried steak? Pancakes and bacon? Fried chicken sandwich? Check, check, check! Food was good enough. Our server was nice. Service overall was fine. Bathroom was clean enough, parking was available. NOTE: apparently you can't leave the tiniest wrapper inside or your car window will get smashed (glass all around). I don't get it. This place came highly recommended by family, but the food was just off. The omelet was ok but was kinda just a pile of ingredients. The hollandaise tasted like white gravy but yellow, floury with no acidic tang whatsoever. My sons lemonade was so overly sweet it made my jaw cringe, and he wouldn't eat his cinnamon roll pancakes because the frosting tasted weird. My Dad chose Buttercup for his Father's Day breakfast. It was a full house on arrival but we managed to score a table after waiting only 15 minutes or so. I'm pretty simple when it comes to breakfast. I like a warm and savory meal. This usually consists of eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, toast, etc, and that's exactly what I received. Overall, it was decent. The bacon was not of good quality and was the worst part of the meal. The hero of the meal was the house favorite, "Cinnascuit". It's a biscuit and cinnamon roll combined and yes, it's as good as it sounds. The service was outstanding. Every member of the staff we encountered, from check in to paying the tab, were great. All had smiles on their faces and were friendly. All told, the food didn't wow me like the service did. If I were with someone who wanted to come here I wouldn't protest, but I wouldn't go out my way to come here on my own, either. read more

Took my daughter and grandson out for early Christmas lunch. The place was clean and clearly popular, but not overcrowded. Patrons were congenial, decor and lighting were nice and Thara was our server. She was prompt and knowledgeable, letting me know that the shrimp and grits, while characterized on the menu as "spicy", was not "jalapeno" spicy, but made with spicy seasoning, and not too hot. She was right! We ordered Humongous Nachos, Spicy Wings for my grandson, calf liver and onions for my love, shrimp and grits and biscuits and gravy for me. My daughter got the avocado melt with curly fries. Portions were large and prices were very reasonable. The food was served hot, straight from the kitchen without delay! Good coffee too. The nachos were ALL that. Everything you could want in an oversize order, complete with guacamole! My wife loved her liver and onions. She said the veggies were overcooked but nicely flavored...and she ate a double portion. She didn't get the mashed potatoes that normally come with it, so as to save on the carbs. My grandson loved the wings, which came with ranch dressing. The wings were huge, meaty and numerous...I think there were eight, and he demolished them all. Not bad for a 12-year-old who also crushed his share of the nachos!! My daughter very much enjoyed her share of the nachos, the avocado melt and the curly fries. I too ate some nachos, which is probably why I was unable to finish my biscuits or the grits. The grits were tasty, the shrimp was plump and overall the fish dish was a success! The biscuits and gravy were adequate. I did not detect any sausage in the sausage gravy. It could be both meatier and spicier. Also, one of the two biscuits I ate was a bit hard on the bottom. I love good biscuits and gravy and order them wherever I travel. I only ate half of it. We have eaten in a few places on our visits to Vallejo. We will be back if we are in town again!! My fiancée was going here EVERY single day before we got together. The staff all know Jason by name and great him. They even bring his ice tea without being prompted. I love the Caesar salad. Lately we've been ordering the pork chops and they're always so good. Maybe I ordered the wrong item, but I tried the biscuit benedict from Door Dash and I found the biscuits to be dry. The eggs were good the waffles were okay a bit soggy the chicken had good flavor but the center of the cutlet was a bit pink nearing the middle so I just gave it to the dog I did report it on uber eats and received a refund, but maybe I'll try it out in person. Service is excellent and friendly! I really like the attentiveness of their staff. I had the 2 egg breakfast with Cajun sausage and cheesy grits. All was great with the exception of the grits. There was nothing cheesy about them and the bowl was swimming in what appeared to be margarine which made the grits soupy. I prefer my grits more firm. My Husband and I took our kids out to dinner Sat night 4/26/25 about 7:30pm. The manager was very inappropriate and made us feel very uncomfortable as we ate our meal. About every 30 seconds to a minute tops, This manager either walked past our table or stood in the distance to watch us as if we were doing something wrong. She was not checking in on us during any of this, she never spoke a word to us. We felt very uncomfortable by her actions. The waitresses were working really hard and attending to their customers, meanwhile this manager ran behind them almost scolding them for every move they made. I enjoy eating here and i am just hoping this Manager was having a bad day. Although bad days are not an excuse to act in his manner. The blueberry streusel pie didn't have anything to gel the blueberries together, the topping was loose and underbaked, and it just didn't taste good. I had breakfast there this morning and it was busy. I ordered T-bone steak and eggs and it was delicious. The steak was huge and it was juicy cooked perfectly. The bread was honey oat wheat bread and it was soft and buttery. The service was great and we had big party. Everyone was satisfied. Usually in this slow recession economy, most restaurants are empty but not this place, it was packed with people and everyone seems to be enjoying the food.
