4.5 stars!!! One of the best places for sushi in North Jersey. I came in here for one of their omakase experience and already I cannot wait to come back for more. My mouth still waters thinking about their toro rolls and sushi pieces. All the sushi and hand rolls were absolutely delicious and tasted very fresh. Their omakase experience menus are very reasonable and well worth the price. The servers are very timely and attentive to make sure you get your plates taken away immediately and have the next course offered. Basically almost everything is raw in the menu (don't expect to have cooked food options). Restaurant inside is sort of small and cozy, but it's a very nice restaurant. The vibes are very cozy but some tables can feel very cramped due to the small space. No alcohol but they have mocktails and they allow BYOB. They even offer $2 off mocktail if you bring your own airplane bottle which we will definitely do next time!! Not quite 5 stars because the service when we were first seated was slacking a little. Half the restaurant was empty but they chose to seat us very close to another party while other tables that could've spaced us out better were open the entirety of our dinner. The server did offer to move after we were already settled in but I think this could've and should've been managed better from the beginning. They also forgot to offer us water, ginger, and wasabi and we had to ask for it after our appetizer courses and when the main course arrived. Afterwards, they were really attentive but I was just a little disappointed at the initial experience, especially since they seem pretty appropriately staffed with different servers approaching us. The facade is nothing to look at but inside is a nicely decorated smallish dining room, with numerous tables, that are suitable for 2's. The walls are slats of wood in a warm tone, floors are covered in dark grey tiles, table tops are wood and comfy chairs are wrapped in faux leather. Found out about Butterfish Sushi through Instagram; they're a new restaurant in Rutherford, NJ (recently had their grand opening on 12/6/24) that sells Michelin-worthy sushi. I love the option of either choosing from a variety of omakase experiences (ranging from $34-96) or ordering a la carte. Staff were super friendly and even gave us extra sushi for service. Ambience is dark and moody with potential seating arrangements for groups up to 8 people. Both still full from our heavy lunch, my husband ordered The Lite ($34 omakase with 2 appetizers, 6 sushi, and 1 handroll), and I ordered the Butterfish Spoon ($24; highly recommend), A5 Wagyu nigiri ($20; also highly recommend), and the Blue Crab handroll ($12; packs a punch of crabby flavor). I also ordered a couple of mocktails -- the Jackfruit Pandan Delight ($14; light, not too sweet, interesting flavor) and the Japanese Melon & Yuzu Refresher ($16; a sour drink that tasted like melon bar ice-cream candy). I came here tonight with my best friend to celebrate my 30th birthday, and it was such a special experience. Huge thank you to Danielle and the rest of the staff for making the night feel so memorable. The staff was incredibly attentive and kind from start to finish. We did the omakase experience, which included three appetizers, twelve pieces of sushi, and two hand rolls. Everything was beautifully paced, and we were also constantly topped off with hot tea, which added to the relaxed, thoughtful flow of the meal. The food itself was outstanding. The combination of textures and flavors was so well balanced that every bite felt intentional and carefully curated. I went twice, the seating is very intimate, small and homely, with great decor and great music selections both times I went. Reservations are best because it does get booked to the brim. I had gotten the Premium Omakase special, and split it with the person I went with. I am not big on sushi but the several options and selections curated on the menu made me crave another round. I'm a sushi fan but clearly not an expert. I debated between four and five stars and then realized that I was debating instead of just reviewing. Went with a couple of friends. It's definitely modern and trendy. The only downside to the small size of the restaurant is that our table was smaller than some of my desks back in school. That said, they used the real estate wisely and service was impeccable throughout the meal. We went with the "premium" level and received a steady stream of delicious dishes. I'm glad I got to try the salmon with burrata, not sure I'd be running back for that one. The toro hand roll was the favorite bite of the night for all three of us. Out of the 12 pieces of sushi, there were some quite memorable bites and that's why I rounded up to 5. The chef had a subtle hand with the complements to each piece, just the right amount of added flavor. Tried a few things that I don't recall having before. when i say the hype is real it's REAL! tried coming here on a weekend but the reservations go quickly so we went on a weekday instead no parking lot so we parked on the nearby streets which wasn't the worse we were a bit early so they were still setting up the restaurant so we waited in the foyer. the space itself is small so i can see why the reservations go quick the manager and staff (main server was i believe Ryan but there are many waiters who came out with our dishes) were all phenomenal. the service and vibes were 10/10 -they truly care about customer satisfaction and listened to what we had to say we got the premium omakase that was $99 that consisted of 3 appetizers (edamame, salmon+burrata, 2 pieces of yellowtail with jalapenos), 11 pieces of nigiri, 1 oyster & 2 handrolls. i personally also got the yuzu melon mocktail $16 which was absolutely delicious. the omakase comes out all at once instead of individually (no "chefs table" to see them make them). we got the appetizers then got 5 nigiris+oysters then a tuna handroll then 6 nigiris then ended it with the blue crab handroll. each piece was absolutely delicious. the only issue we had was that the tuna handroll was really cold/frozen to which the manager apologized and gave us a complimentary salmon handroll with truffle & cavier which was beyond amazing and definitely made up for the frozen tuna handroll. didn't expect it which made the experience that more elevated i wish we kind of ended the meal with the nigiris instead of the blue crab handroll as the eel+foi grae along with the wagyu nigri were the stars of the night but to each their own! we were going to get the cookie ice cream that i heard so much about but unfortunately apparently they only restock it on thursdays and they had just sold out from valentine's weekend. guess that means i just have to come back! recommended this place to all my friends already, highly recommend to those who are wanting to check this place out ! definitely will be back~ read more

Our Saturday night experience at Butterfish was amazing from start to finish! Getting a reservation was a bit difficult but after seeing how small the space is and how good the food is, I totally understand why! We arrived at our reservation time and were greeted so kindly by all of the staff. Our server Jojo was so eager, welcoming and patient. He described the menu with such vivid detail that I wish I could have tried one of everything! Butterfish is BYOB and if you bring your own airplane bottles, you can get $2 off any of the mocktails. We started out with some apps before going on to the Omakase Experience. For the apps we got Cucumber Chili Crunch Salad, Salmon Burrata, and White Truffle Scallop Carpaccio. I would never have thought to combine burrata with fresh salmon but somehow, it works! My favorite app were the scallops because they were just bursting with different flavors (truffle + yuzu - YUM!). Honestly, though, they were all incredible and you can't go wrong with any of them! For the Omakase Experience, I was torn on which one to get but decided on The One. This features 2 apps (edamame & sashimi), 8 pieces of sushi, and two handrolls. Ok so normally I don't leave any reviews but I had to for this. I had been following on social media for some time now and finally made it out. Just wow! Amazing experience. The staff was very nice and trained well with explaining the menu. The ambiance and music was perfect. We went with the Omakase Experience. I didn't know what to expect but man it did not disappoint one bit. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. Out of 6 courses the only thing I can say I didn't like much was the chocolate spicy gelato. My favorite was the yellowtail ceviche along with some of the sushi and sashimi. Ryan, our server, was awesome. I wish I knew the other guys names that helped out but they were awesome too. Was here on recently and tried their premium Omakase flight. It was so delicious. Taste and presentation was wonderful. No complaints on that end. Have to give the hostess and the manager shout out for their friendliness and professionalism. We had a late reservation and there was a table close to us that was so loud that no one in our party was able to hear each other speak. The restaurant is cozy and small so noise travels. We told the manager and he right away apologize ( not his fault but he apologized) and offer to switch our table to the other side of the restaurant once a table is available. Buttery and MMM were all we said with each bite. From the Uni, the caviar, Blue Crab handroll and A5 Wagyu. All of it was beautiful. If youre an Uni fan, you wont be disappointed! It was my favorite one! We then ordered the Handroll flight (this is a secret menu item. ASK about it. its worth!) The Fish to Rice ratio was PERFECT. it was a great amount to keep a sturdy handroll (Please do NOT change these ratios) Everything was fresh, the salinity was perfect and really quick lets talk about the wasabi. I appreciate it not being store bought paste. its REAL wasabi. Throw it on for the perfect bite! We ended the night with complimentary gelato, pistachio and salted caramel were so lovely to finish our meal! Overall Service: I will never complain about the service. From start to finish everyone made sure to greet you if they made eye contact. To some its not that important, but to me those little things make a difference, it came from a genuine place. First things first come hungry. I went on a Saturday night and it was much smaller than I anticipated but the space was really nice. I liked the whole ambiance of the place. Also it is byob which is nice. Everyone there was so kind and welcoming. I have severe food allergies and they were so accommodating which was amazing. My partner and I both got the signature omakase $59 I thought perhaps we might need another appetizer and I'm happy we didn't order one because we definitely didn't need it. By the time the last dish came out I was so full. The quality of the fish was so good and they well well sized. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! I would go again to try their other dishes. Part 1 My reservation was canceled by the restaurant without any explanation. I received no text or email--only an automated cancellation notification. I have never experienced anything like this. Is this really how you treat your customers? Unbelievable! Part 2 - If a reservation must be canceled, basic courtesy would be to contact the customer first by phone, text, or email--especially before canceling it outright. I was not rude in my review; I simply described exactly what happened. What I do find inappropriate is receiving a phone call at 11:33 PM and a text again at 7:00 AM demanding that I delete my review. I expect professional communication from a business, and I do not appreciate the tone used. This situation could have been avoided entirely with proper communication. read more
