I don't even know where to begin!!!! After a most somber visit to the Civil Rights Museum, I walked back to the car, pensive and ravenous. All of a sudden, I saw the storefront sign. I had read about this legendary place on Yelp and while my feet walked past, my eyes remained glued on the storefront. I was only going to be in Memphis for a few more days. I knew what I had to do. Upon entering Makedas Cookies I felt overwhelmed by the most amazing smell. Baked goods of all kinds were arranged behind a glass panel. I was immediately hit with decision paralysis, until I saw..... THE BANANA PUDDING!!!! Upon first glance I didn't know what it was! Cookies atop a white creamy substance with crushed cookies at the bottom. What was this dessert? Upon asking KJ (THE BEST CASHIER IN THE WORLD!), I was told it was banana pudding and I knew I had to have it. I had been on a quest for delicious banana pudding and after a terrible experience at Pacific Fusion, I was praying that my redemption had come. AND IT DID! My first experience with butter cookies was as a child with those Danish treats that come in the blue tin..... otherwise known as "old people cookies". I hated those. Make no mistake! Makedas Butter cookies ARE NOT THE SAME! They are infinitely better! As I dug into the banana pudding I was overwhelmed by a deliciously creamy vanilla custard, and buttery cookies that were to die for! Seriously they were so good. I found myself crunching and munching away, not wanting the buttery cookie goodness to end. There were delicious banana slices that served as a complement to the creamy custard and crunchy cookie. Amazing butter cookies! You can smell the sweet aroma of butter when you enter the store. I didn't think I'd really like butter cookies, but that changed when I sampled these butter cookies. You must get the banana pudding! Instead of vanilla wafers, they use their butter cookies. The pudding is thick, creamy and delicious ! I also tried some other cookies. I could kick myself for forgetting to do a review on this place! My husband and I were able to visit this place after a big dinner. Although I was full from a big meal I wanted dessert and wanted to try something from another place. Yelp led us to Makedas and we were delighted as we walked in the business. The aroma of sweet, buttery something filled the air. We selected a few cookies. But my favorite were the butter cookies. We brought some back for the family and they loved them as well. My sister loved them so much to order them as her wedding favors. I was a bit concerned about having them mailed from TN to CA but I was reassured by the daughter and mother (owners) it will be packed with care. She even offered to throw in extras just in case some were broken. They arrived on time as promised and only a few were broken, but still tasted yummy. They were very patient with my many concerns and very friendly. I do look forward to visiting their place again when we are in the area and hope to do so earlier in the day when the scrumptious sweets are coming out of the oven.
