I really wanted to love byChae because the branding, presentation, and interior are all beautiful. The shop has a clean minimalist aesthetic, and the drinks look incredible. Unfortunately, the drinks themselves did not live up to the hype for us. We ordered the Mango Sticky Rice Matcha and the Strawberry Matcha. The Strawberry Matcha was definitely the better of the two. The strawberry puree tasted fresh and high quality, and it paired well with the milk. My biggest complaint was that the matcha itself was almost nonexistent. My fiancée and I both felt the same way. Compared to many of the specialty matcha shops that have opened around Boston this summer, the matcha flavor here was much too subtle. The Mango Sticky Rice Matcha was especially disappointing. The mango completely overpowered the drink, and I never got the sticky rice flavor or texture that the name suggests. It tasted much more like a mango latte than a matcha inspired version of mango sticky rice. One thing that also concerned me was watching drinks being prepared without gloves while handling ingredients that appeared to go directly into finished drinks. I understand gloves are not required in every situation if utensils or other food safe practices are being used, but as a customer it did make me question the food handling practices. I might be wrong, maybe that's okay with Boston's department of public health. I expected better for a cafe in Newbury. Overall, I can understand why people visit for the aesthetic and social media appeal, but if you are looking for a strong matcha experience, there are quite a few other specialty matcha shops around Greater Boston that I personally think do it better. Three stars because the presentation and atmosphere were excellent, but the drinks themselves left us wanting more. I think the drinks are priced pretty well and I wouldn't hesitate to order another Strawberry Matcha in the future, maybe just ask them to skip the garnish. Edit 8/21/26: Thank you @byChae for the thoughtful response. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the intention behind the drinks and being receptive to the feedback. I sincerely hope you'll reconsider the Mango Sticky Rice Matcha specifically. The mango overwhelms the drink, while the matcha and sticky rice character get lost. I genuinely want to see your business succeed, so I hope you take constructive feedback beyond the influencer hype into consideration. The drink either needs a sharper matcha presence and better balance, or a name that more accurately reflects what it tastes like. This isn't it. I wish you the best with the business, I can't wait to see what comes next!

I arrived here 15 minutes before opening because I happened to be in the area. They opened right on time and they were ready to take orders! They had 5 different drinks to choose from and they were quick. I got the Coco Cloud (I panic ordered) and it was absolutely delicious, somehow tasted like matcha ice cream even though it was coconut water based. They had multiple seats/tables indoors.

I had a really positive experience at chae's matcha truck. I went there right before he was scheduled to close for the day, and he was starting to run out of ingredients. He did a great job compensating for the fact that he was missing ingredients and I was still able to get a pretty good tasting matcha. Definitely show up early if you want to get the full experience from the full menu.

I went with two scoops, black raspberry and brownie chocolate, and the brownie was killer. Rich, chocolatey, and totally worth standing outside in 30 degree weather to eat it. I devoured it without hesitation. There were so many great flavor options, and my friends all found something they loved too. It felt like one of those classic, must-stop dessert spots. Cold, delicious, and just the right amount of chaotic fun... it was wicked good.

There was plenty of seating inside and we had no trouble finding an open spot to sit down and enjoy our ice cream. There also wasn't a line which was really nice! My boyfriend got the mint chip in a waffle cone, and I got the salted caramel cookies n creme in a cup with sprinkles on it. While I do usually prefer my ice cream order to my boyfriends....i do have to admit that I liked his more. Don't skip the waffle cone like I did. Definitely a great stop to add to your day in boston! The flavors are always great, and there's seasonal flavors which rotate that are always fun to try.

We weren't sure how to enter, so we started in the bookstore and found their convenient elevator downstairs! The restaurant is tiny but cozy, which is the perfect atmosphere for a book store! We sat outside in the little courtyard and it's a mix of magical and relaxing! There were only a few tables, so it wasn't overcrowded and with nice weather, it was perfect. I had a salad with salmon on the side which was delicious - and the ginger lemonade - wonderful! From buttered noodles to seafood, everything was executed well. The staff didn't rush us even though they were busy - and they had to give really long wait times to a number of others, but we still weren't rushed. I would highly recommend reservations, but even without we were treated very well. Pricing was in line with city pricing - and the food was extremely high quality and produce was lovely - not a shriveled lettuce leaf in sight. We then went upstairs to the bookstore and perused - each floor has something fun to see (including a tiny kids door - or is it a mouse door for the mouse who stars in the book about the store?!). 100% worth a visit - definitely stop in!

The place is so adorable and photogenic, no doubt! But beyond that?…read more I had hoped to come enjoy a book, but unfortunately, Instagram has turned this cute bookstore into a tourist site. Long loud tourist lines for the restroom make it hard to actually sit for a moment enjoying this beautiful space.
