We ordered deli sandwiches for lunch. A full Scandi Turkey on Swedish Rye with cardamom mayo and lingonberry jam and a half caprese with mozzarella, fresh tomato, pesto, and fresh basil on sourdough bread. We waited ten mins for the freshly made sandwiches. Both had enough sumptuous filling and tasted delicious. The staff were helpful and gave good suggestions. We did a takeaway although they do have places to sit inside. They sell other baked goods as well and seemed to be popular for birthday cakes. We were happy with our sandwiches. read more

I have been here a few times and it never disappoints. Most recently I came in for their spring lemon lavender cake and it was exactly what I was hoping for and left me wishing I had a lot more. Their spring marketing email really got me, but how can you resist layers of fragrant lemon cake, tart lemon curd, lavender bergamot buttercream and just a hint of blackberry brandy?! Per usual I saw even more tasty treats I want to come back to try from cinnamon rolls, to tarts, to cookies and croissants. Of course I want some more of the lemon lavender cake as well. Come here and you will leave satisfied and happy, the worst part will be having to decide between so many amazing sweets. read more

There wasn't a single item I got here that I didn't enjoy. All the flavors are delivered as promised in their pasties. My favorite was the vanilla raspberry marzipan cake. Fix your coffee menu. Theres no reason a 16oz 4 shot Americano should cost a dollar more than a 20oz 4 shot Americano. Just charge by shots my guys. It's enough of a reason to go next door for coffee. Great pastries tho. read more

If you are looking for a last minute Scandinavian Christmas Kringle that is absolutely delicious, look no further. (if you are looking to fit into a pair of skinny jeans anytime soon, then keep walking. There is nothing for you to see here...) Byen Bakeri is nestled between Queen Anne and Fremont on Nickerson, and is full of the smells, tastes and buttery perfection of a great European bakery. Despite the sophistication of their flakey pastry, you'll find Byen to be a small, unassuming startup just teeming (literally overflowing on the day I was there) with great looking baked goods. I started out this morning thinking I was heading to grab a Kringle elsewhere, but I got a tip that I should come here instead, and I'm glad I did. This place has the goods. The bakery is producing mountains of incredible looking items. When I arrived after lunch, there were just two enormous Kringles left, but no crowds (the Bakeri has only been open a month) and here were literally rows and counters full of the most delicious looking cookies and pastries. Should you arrive too late to score the Kringle: which is a hot holiday commodity is this Scandinavian-friendly city --there is much more to chose from and no crazy crowds to contend with. Other items that look perfect for the holiday glutton (and sign me up solidly in that category!) include Christmas decorated shortbread cookies, gorgeous buche de noel, Royal Cakes (think the best coffee cake ever), and Scandinavian treats like cardamom braids, stollen,cardamom raisin rolls, lefse, julekake, scandia rolls and princess torta. From the counter, you can see back into the open kitchen where two pastry chefs were putting out what looked like enough pastry to feed a small European country. I've tried everything at this place. I love this bakery. I honestly cannot tell the difference between Scandinavian bakeries and dutch bakeries (sorry). I will say between all the dutch, swedish and scandinavian bakeries that I've tried, this one is my favorite. The pastries here are generally pretty big. ~5-6 pastries fit into a 8"x11" box. I love Skolebrod, its a custard filled cardamom bun--I'm partial to cardamom. I love the Royal Almond Croissant, but I am from San Francisco, and nothing is going to beat the Almond Croissant from Tartine Bakery for me. The Danishes are so unbeatable, I wish it wasn't the size of my face because I eat the whole thing every time. The cookies are good, hard to go wrong here. I personally love princess cake. Portions are big, service is phenomenol, and they serve fonte coffee. read more

Then a co-worker brought in an assortment for our office and I tried it and it was delicous! So I thought I would stop by and glad I did. I was going to an morning event and decided to stop by and get an assortment for the group. Wow! Absolutely delicious! I got an assortment from the apple danish, almond croissant, chocolate croissant, royal thing, ham & cheese, coffee cakes, got some cookies. Got like 2 boxes of stuff! Its not cheap but I think its worth it and didnt feel like I overpaid. Its very clean inside, new, you can see some of the bakery kitchen in the back, they make coffees, there are some tables you can eat at, helpful and friendly staff as well. A definite recommend! Best danishes in Seattle. My sister and I are fans of Gilmore Girls, and Danish Day became a thing for us. Oftentimes, I find myself disappointed by pastries masquerading as danishes when they are just croissant dough. Danish dough is enriched with egg and traditionally uses cardamom so it stands up to the sweetness of the filling. Byen Bakeri is the truth! The pastry is still flakey and buttery. My go to filling is cream cheese and marionberry when I get there in time. The danishes are pretty big so we end up sharing one. Perfect pairing with a hot cup of coffee and fun conversation. read more

Delightful bakery located on Nickerson Street. It's hard to look over all the different pastries, breads and cookies without wanting to buy everything. The staff there are a delight and most of all patient. It was love at first bite. Their boulder pastry has my attention. Nothing is better than a flaky cream puff with vanilla custard nestled inside. I'm one for an 8oz cappuccino and I was impressed with the velvet foam here. My husband recommends the cold brew. Needless to say we will be back for more. read more

No parking and long lines at Café Besalu on 6/13/15, so me and the college friend decided to head over to Byen Bakeri instead. It's been awhile since I've visited and really like the improved seating arrangement indoors and the added outdoor sidewalk seating. I had the cream cheese Danish ($3.85) onsite and I'd have to say it rivals my favorite from Sluy's Bakery in Poulsbo. I bought an éclair ($4.60) to go for the kiddo. He said this is slightly better than his favorite from Bakery Nouveau. I also purchased a large apple coffee cake ($6.95) which I brought earlier today to a family gathering. Wow - that was delicious! One bonus of sticking around was the amazing aroma that filled the bakeshop when the freshly baked bread was brought out to cool. They have a cold case with some cake options, and an espresso bar for your caffeine fix. Their almond-chocolate croissant is truly the best in Seattle, and is sooo divine. Got the princess cake and the spring latte which came with rosemary and lavender I believe. Either way the latte was amazing, though very very strong in the herbal flavors. The princess cake was so good and the almond marzipan on the slice was unexpectedly delicious. Shared halfsies with my girlfriend and we both thought it was amazing. This place used to be my favorite bakery under the original owner. About two years ago it started going down hill. Visited it recently and was dumbfounded. At 10:30 am there was nothing to buy. They usually run out of pastries by 8:30 am said the worker. What kind of bakery runs out of pastries by 8:30 in the morning?? The bread and pastries taste nothing like before, they don't even look the same. The selection is mediocre to say the least. You can tell they are cutting corners on quality and just doing everything on the cheap. Extremely disappointed that the new management didn't continue the tradition of high quality baking with love. The frosting was not heavy and I could have easily split it with three people which is what I did. I also bought two cards there because they reminded me of home. This is totally crazy. My favorite bakery in Seattle and I'm only now writing a review? Granted, I haven't written a review in about a year, but I've been going to this bakery since I moved to the Seattle area which was far more than just a year ago. This bakery is so good. Everything is delicious. Pastries, bread, cake, tarts. Just try the cardamom buns. We come back again and again for the cardamom buns. The last time we went was Easter Sunday. We were worried about how it would go with the current crisis. But they had everything set up well and were really appreciative of our business. We ended up buying way too much and had to freeze the buns. Now I'm sitting at this computer blissfully eating buns. They freeze really well. FYI, much of their goods are seasonal so do give them a periodic visit. It is also one of the few places I've ever seen that make pavlovas. read more

I am over-the-moon excited that Byen Bakeri exists. Every single thing here is authentically Scandinavian, and everything is absolutely tasty. I discovered Byen when I would go to the Swedish Pancake Breakfast at the Swedish Cultural Center. They are always there selling breads, sweets, etc. When I lived in LA, my then-Swedish boyfriend and I would always go to the SWEA Christmas fair and frequent as many Scandinavian restaurants and shops we could find. It's so nice to live in a city that celebrates this culture and provides so much of it to the community. I just knew that I had to check and see if they had the beloved princesstårta, a Swedish cake I ate in (way too much) abundance when I lived in LA. And they did, and it's amazing. They sell it by the whole round cake or by the slice. I am also a huge fan of the Swedish semla, a cardamom roll with whipped cream in the center. I mean, really, I could easily spend $50 in 5 minutes in this place. So worth it. Lately, the shop has had some odd hours due to staff shortages, etc., which has made it tricky to plan to visit. But, I think if you go anytime before 3 pm (except they are closed on Mondays), you are good. read more

Not sure why this place has high reviews. Had a slice of the Gingerbread cake and it was hard and not soft at all. I had to force cut it with my fork to take chunks off in order to eat it. Tasted like leftover cake. I expected better quality standards from a "Scandinavian" bakery. Based on my poor first impression, I won't be returning. Service is good, hence the two stars. read more

Cute little bakery located in Queen Anne. I've been craving their Royal (almond) croissant since I discovered them. The place was pretty packed but a fairly short line. Service wasn't the most efficient and the line wasn't well maintained. Half the people that came in just sat down at a table and then went straight to the cash register to order. The other half were waiting by the glass display cases with all the pastries. I had no idea where I should be lining up, but the people in front of me said they were in line. So I continued to wait. We decided to order a couple sandwiches since we did not have lunch yet. A full sandwich was about $11 and a half was about $8. A bit spendy in my opinion since I found the sandwiches to be mediocre. We order a ham sandwich and a turkey sandwich. The turkey was so soggy. It was dripping the whole time I was eating it. I'm not sure if it was from the mayo or what. Either way, it was not enjoyable. The ham sandwich was just stuffed with shredded lettuce. $10 and half of it was iceberg lettuce. Unimpressed. What I thought was good was the Royal croissant. This thing was huge and actually heavy! It tastes amazing. The croissant was flakey and it had a good amount of almond filling. I highly recommend it. While the sandwiches fell short, the pastries were delightful.
