There's actually a hidden backyard seating area that's dog friendly. Owner was super friendly and went around asking about everyone's experiences. The Mean: Corned beef was not the most tender (I'm still partial to Dingfelder's), but it's well seasoned. Mint with mustard is a combination I never would have guessed would work, but the sharpness complemented each other nicely. Red cabbage had a nice tang and the soft bun for the contrast of texture. The Steak Tartare Club: Steak tartare surprisingly mild, almost feels more like a BLT with a background of slight beefy squishy texture (but in a good way!). The Mean - THICK pieces of juicy corned beef with housemade mustard, pickled red cabbage and mint. The cross section of the sandwich looks insane! The combination of flavors is excellent. The Hama Hama Oyster Po'Boy - Deep-fried Hama Hama yysters with housemade remoulade and lemon-pepper mayo. I loved this. The oysteres were nicely fried with not too much batter. You could really taste the oyster and appreciate the texture. The French roll was also very nice. It was similar to a Vietnamese Banh Mi roll. Soft, but with a light crispness on the outside. Fully Loaded Skins & Ins - Skins & Ins are basically a mixture of fried potato skins and potato chunks so you get a variety of texture: thin and crispy, or soft and meaty. The fully loaded option adds toppings similar to that of a loaded baked potato (white sauce, spices, scallions, and super crunchy bacon bits). This was a nice change from having the usual chips or fries with a sandwich. Parking can be somewhat of a challenge in this area, but if you're able to make it over then I think it's worth visiting. read more

This small shop in Ballard is somewhere you likely wouldn't stumble upon, but it is definitely worth seeking out. The shop itself is fairly small with a few booths, some window seating, and a few tables. We ordered our food to go, but there were a few spots open so we could have dined in had we preferred. The owner of the shop was there and help share about the menu. You can tell he is passionate about his restaurant and he answered all our questions. We even got to talking to him about some of his books he has in the shop that are different sandwich books and he was so knowledgeable on them, the chefs and more. We tried 3 different sandwiches - the steak tartar, the mean (corned beef) and the wtk (fried chicken). All three were a wonderful combinations of ingredients you would not see on an average sandwich shop menu and all three were delightful. When we arrived there was a long line and lots of people waiting. We weren't sure how long the wait was, but it seemed like things were moving pretty good. Its fairly clean and efficient. The reviews were really good so we decided to give it a try. You order at the counter and find a seat or take it to go. Be careful of add ons or asking for things to be put on the side as they do charge extra for that. You can also order online and pick up as well if you don't want to jockey for a seat. On a nice day they also have seating outside in the back. We ordered the Wedge Salad and The Mean Sandwich. The sandwich comes with potato skins too. I love potato skins so I was excited to try those. They are pretty quick with getting you order out. Generally about 15 minutes for your order to come out. The Mean Sandwich is great! It has a savory, sweet, and sour quality that is perfect. The balance of flavors make the experience very enjoyable. The potato skins are perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Little nuggets of goodness. The Wedge Salad was really good as well. Lots of bacon bits and just the right amount of cheese and dressing. Some places drown it in dressing but this was just right. What a great meal! The humorous exterior has long intrigued me when driving by on the bus. The friendly greeting from the cashier was welcoming and our interaction was lighthearted and fun. Loved his insights as to the variety of dipping sauces as well. The place is spotless; one of the team members walked through constantly, cleaning the counters and asking patrons if their meals were satisfactory. The owner also came out to have a word and discuss the sandwich ingredients. This is always such a welcome touch, not usually found in a casual restaurant. I was in a rush and mapped the closest sandwich shop while on a job. I ended up at this unique spot and although it was pricier than I planned it was worth it. Everything is well thought of, and completely opposite of the boring corporate sandwiches I'm usually stuck with. I was warmly welcomed by staff and they were helpful. Definitely go here if you're in the area and like a mean sandwich! I ordered the WTK which is fried chicken, seasoned lettuce, house-made pickles, Calabrian chili sauce and some lemon pepper. I don't usually eat spicy food and don't typically like classic pickles so I was curious to see which parts of it I liked. I was not expecting to like everything about it, but they absolutely know what they're doing when it comes to sandwich construction. The chicken was moist and crispy, the lettuce was perfect, the chili sauce was not overpowering, the pickles were fresh and crunchy, and the bread a delicious vessel. Their prices are a little high for sandwiches, but it is a huge sandwich and a generously sized bag of fried potatoes, so I would say it is well worth it. Another after-farmers market meal, this time at Mean Sandwich, a counter service sandwich and burger shop. This was for Sunday lunch and it wasn't too crowded at all, although a couple more customers came in while we were eating. They actually have quite a large space - a bunch of indoor seating as well as outdoor seating in the back. We were deciding between The Mean, WTF and D.A.M Burger, and the cashier managed to convince us to go with the former two. The Mean ($19) - I'm usually hesitant to order corned beef sandwiches - I'm used to the staggeringly salty, thinly shaved gigantic beast-sized sandwiches of the Midwest that are completely unwieldy to eat and just way too salty for my tastes. The cashier heartily recommended this sandwich, and I decided to give it a try in spite of my misgivings. Man I am happy I ordered this. Firstly, they use larger chunks of corned beef rather than thin slices. This makes it so each bite is more cohesive and allows them to control the spice levels much better - with these being perfectly not too salty. They top it with a thick layer of pickled red cabbage - it adds nice crunch and is tangy, but not too much. Above that is a thick layer of fresh mint. When I read the menu, I thought it would be just a leaf or two but they really pile it on. And above that is a layer of mustard. The flavors really do work well together and everything melds into a super delicious bite. I found the bun to be a bit strange though - nothing wrong with quality, but they add so much to the sandwich that it compresses the interior of the bun until it shrinks enough to almost resemble pita bread! Strange, but it works well! (5/5) WTK? ($19) - I found this sandwich to be a little weaker than The Mean. It starts with a toasted Vietnamese-style baguette, complete with crackly thin crust. Inside, they slather a spicy chili relish and a hot lemon pepper mayo and add pickles. These three ingredients all exhibit a very robust tangy flavor profile with a bit of heat from the chilis and mayo. It's a very vigorous tart and tangy flavor that's completely different from the lighter acidity from the pickled vegetables that are typically included in Banh Mi. For me, at least, it's a little too strong and there isn't enough fat to help balance the flavors. Otherwise, the chicken is pretty good - seems like cubed thigh meat bits fried until crisp. Good flavor and not dry inside. There's plenty of lettuce as well, which is then sprinkled with additional pepper. It's still a good sandwich, but all the tart flavors just didn't work that much for my tastes. (4/5) Sandwiches come with a side of the Salt-n-Pepa Skins. They are very generous with the potatoes - it's probably double or more of what I usually expect, making the $19 paid for each sandwich way more palatable in terms of pricing. These potato skins are the definition of inconsistent - all pieces completely different sizes and shapes, filled with nooks and crannies. Some pieces are crunchy with skin full on, some pieces are almost to the point of being bitter and burnt, while other pieces are lighter in color. Some are fluffier, some are harder but cooked through. None are as fluffy as the inside of a typical french fry. The uniqueness of each skin makes each one delicious in its own way. The amount of salt added is much less than the typical french fry as well, making these less of a sodium bomb. I love this method of potato prep. (5/5) I think one of the owners came out and basically went to every every table to ask how everyone was doing. What a great gesture to see! Double beef patties on a quality bun with cheese, yellow mustard but better quality and pickles. I'm not positive of all the ingredients but I assure you, it's delicious. This burger is prominently a savory burger in that it doesn't contain sweetness from tomato or ketchup. It's a must try!! Customer service here at Mean Sandwich is great. From ordering to delivery of food to our own picnic table, we were treated well and made to feel welcome. We were greeted, at our table by Dan who was super friendly and welcoming. Cute, small, and very busy sandwich shop with bar seating and limited group table seating indoors! There is some seating outdoors under tents behind the store. Friendly counter staff! We came on a Sunday at 1 PM when it was relatively quiet - by the time we left there were no seats left indoors and it was CROWDED. The steak tartare sandwich was sold out when we left, but trying it today it was definitely not as good as the oyster po boy! The price is a little bit high for a sandwich with a side of potato wedges/skins but the oyster po boy was definitely worth it - recommend that!! read more
