Had my car broken into while I was eating dinner here. No cops came to file a report had to do it over the phone. Must happen a lot here. Was even told there office was broken into the night before. Would maybe be a great idea to install a few cameras, since Its such a suspect area and it could possible make someone think twice or iD whatever lowlifes hang around the the building. So onto the food review. The steak I ordered medium definitely came out borderline rare. Sent back and came back burnt. I didn't complain since The horseradish sauce is really good. But that was about it. Everything else mediocre at best. Sorry for the 1 star review but when you have to pay $100+ for 2, come out to a broken window with belongings missing, have to clean out your car the best you can and drive home with no window sitting in glass. It kind of leaves a REALLY bad taste in your mouth. Update: I posted the same on the Facebook page and they removed it. Beware of any people lurking around the parking lot. After moving back to Indy, decided to celebrate our anniversary at Bynum's. So glad we did! It has been some time since our last visit and we weren't disappointed. Started with the shrimp cocktail and the sauce was exactly what we were looking forward at a steakhouse. The NY strip and shrimp were wonderful. Steaks were cooked to medium as we asked. Very reasonably priced, generous portions and great atmosphere without having to deal with the downtown hassle. Definitely make reservations! read more

Bynum's lived up to their reputation! I got the t-bone steak and it did not disappoint! It was nice to get a steak the way I ordered it, medium. One of the best steaks that I've had in a while. Bynum's is a solid 3.5 star restaurant. It's not going to be the best steakhouse you've gone to, but it's also a solid choice if you just want some meat. The price is a little prohibitive for the vibe they're trying to give off which is an unpretentious, solid restaurant. We arrived at 5 pm before the dinner rush so were able to get a seat easily. We started with the boom boom shrimp which was a nice standard deep fried shrimp in some sweeter mayo based sauce. We ordered the prime rib and the tomahawk steak special. Either the server or the kitchen may have gotten the temperatures reversed because the prime rib was a perfect medium rare and the tomahawk was a perfect rare except for the first inch or so. Excellent prime rib is hard to find and bynum's didn't quite hit the mark. Usually okay prime rib is tasty, but a little bit on the "you have to really saw through it" end of the spectrum, and this was that kind of steak. The tomahawk was tasty, but since it was the only prime cut of meat on their menu that's to be expected. It could have benefited from a little bit more seasoning. I think the prices for the food were all just a little bit high. 14 dollars for 6 shrimp could have been 11-12. The prime rib was priced accordingly at 52. The tomahawk could have been around the 80 dollar mark instead of in the 90s. Just my 2 cents based on other steakhouses with the same vibe. The only disappointing part of the night was when I received my drink the glass had a small crack in it. It caught my lip a little bit. Not a huge deal, and the server brought me a new beer. But no one ever came to speak to me about it. read more

We went for the Prime Rib. We arrived at 6:50pm on a Thursday and the place was dead. We ordered the Prime Rib and was told they were out. Really at 6:50pm when the the restaurant was empty?? I really wanted this place to be the hidden gem I thought it was. So desperately, I tried to maintain a positive outlook far beyond anyone else at our table of six. By the time I bowed my head and mumbled, "you're right, it's terrible", we all felt like hostages caught in a live page of a Where's Waldo book. Waldo being our server, of course. Husband and I arrived early, my family was running late. It was my mother's 60th birthday. We needed a location for a celebratory meal around the halfway point between Carmel and Bloomington. We tossed a few possibilities around and mom decided on Bynum's - she was looking for a really good steak. Let's just say I still owe Mom a really good steak. While we were waiting, Husband ordered a glass of pinot noir and water, as driver I requested a soda and water. Our meal extended to a just over three hour event and, even with multiple requests, I never received my water. Seriously. I had to share with Husband. Looking back now, I should have just gone to the bar to get my own water. Didn't dawn on me at the time - I was enjoying one of the rare occasions I get to see most of my family! We also ordered potato skins for the table. These were immediately devoured upon arrival and probably the best thing we ate all night, hence the Last Bite photo provided. The onion soup was good, salad decent. I'm not going to walk you through the agony of waiting to order, Husband's 45 minute wait for his Knob Creek and coke, the disaster that was trying to get our correct salads and entrees, or the million other little things that would have made this such a miserable evening if my family were not champs of overcoming adversity and enjoying our rare moments of time together. My NY Strip was terrible. Probably good to note that these are wet aged, not dry aged as I had assumed. On a positive note, Husband really enjoyed his Bone-in Ribeye despite being over temped. Actually, it wasn't over temped - it was actually Sister's Not-Husband's order. Not-Husband ate, but did not quite as much enjoy, Husband's mid rare order. Too bad we discovered this error late. Nephew never got his fries and Mom was pretty much done eating when the horseradish for her prime rib showed up. My steak was chewy with un-rendered fat. Then the hostage crisis began. It took us 27 minutes to locate our server to ask for boxes and checks. Another 18 passed before the hostess showed up with the styrofoam containers. Logged another 14 waiting to just ask him for the check AGAIN. Another 12 before they showed up. I don't remember the count on how long it took for him to return with our card and set us free. That's right, folks. We spent half our dining experience desperately trying to leave and staring at the time as it slowly. ticked. by. While the food ran from decent to awful, the service was what killed the hidden gem possibility here for us. It may have been an A-List finalist for several years, but the only thing in common with Ruth's Chris, St. Elmo's, Eddie Merlot's, and the others on that list is price. For Husband and I, plus mom, dinner and a few drinks came to around $200. For that kind of money I'd at least expect an edible entree and decent service. For the first time in nearly a year, we met another couple for dinner this evening, and decided on Bynum's. While previous visits over the years have been great, tonight, at least for me, wasn't awesome. Our server was in such a hurry that it was unpleasant. Our initial drink order was the only time he brought us beverages...he never checked to see if we needed a refill. When another server brought our dinner order, we were able to ask her get refills. Later, when one of our party wanted another beer, it was hard to get the server's attention. When we were able to request the beer, and he dropped it off as he jogged past the table, it was the wrong brand! My steak was very undercooked, and not enjoyable. But again, no checking by the server to see if everything was as ordered. At least the cocktail was good. At these prices I won't be in a hurry to return. read more

Tuesday night was the third time this year that we have been to this restaurant. Unfortunately, that might have been the last time... at least for a while. Not going to list any complaints, but I am offering these suggestions for anyone that might be considering going there: 1 - MAKE A RESERVATION! We were told by our server that they schedule staff by how many reservations they have. So if they only have four or five reservations, there may only be two servers. So if you walk in there and don't have a reservation, you will be seated, however, if there are 10 other people that have come in also without reservation, you might have a long wait or not so good service. 2 - CALL BEFORE YOU GO!! Even if you don't want to make a reservation, you'll want to call to make sure they are open. We were going to go on Halloween, but we called to make sure they were open (because the last time we went on a Monday they weren't open) and since there was no answer, we waited until Tuesday to go. We asked our server about it on Tuesday and she said that they will always answer the phone if someone's there. So, if you call and there's no answer, then they're not open. The voicemail recording greeting won't tell you that but, don't take a chance, and don't go if you don't get an answer. 3 - TAKE ALONG A SWEATER OR COAT!!! I had a sweatshirt and a jacket on and I was freezing still. My dining companion, who is never cold, said he wished he had brought his jacket! read more

I was with a group of 10 people. Most of the people were very satisfied with their meal. One of the filets when brought with butter on top wasn't melting & the meat was not cooked correctly but most importantly the meat was not hot - the butter was not melting. She didn't report it because the mood was good celebrating birthdays. The service was very good. I had a problem with the restaurant not honoring gift cards that was purchased in Feb of 23 - 2 $50 cards. The waitress said that was told to the person who purchased them. I am sorry to say I was very disappointed to hear they were expired that was $100...3 months later. The waitress said she would ask her (not sure who she was) if she would honor half the value. And she did and I was told I don't get to keep the gift cards and at least that is something she doesn't do that for everyone... I agree it was something and I hope SHE enjoyed the remaining $50 my niece and sister bought paid the restaurant it was for our 50th wedding anniversary. It isn't like restaurant didn't get the money. I like to walk out of a dinner with a smile on my face and even though our dinner was good that changed our evening. I don't understand when you are paid the money for give cards how you cannot redeem them and keep your customers money. Below average experience. We had reservations for two at 7 pm. We arrived by 6:45 and waited until 7:25 to be seated. Not OK. Other tables were offered apologies for the wait but I guess our small party was not important enough... Second, we ordered drinks when we sat down. My lemon drop cocktail barely took up half the glass it was served in, was neither sweet nor sour, and neither my husband nor myself detected any liquor. For 8 dollars it was beyond unacceptable. Third, our salads that came with our dinner were strange. Mine had onions, my husband's had tomatoes. We definitely ordered the same salad... The deal-breaker: the steaks were just OK. For 30 bucks each I wanted good steaks. Our vegetable sides were overcooked and bland. I won't be back. Service was OK but not personable. The only thing I liked was the soup! read more

The first time I ate here it was reasonably good. Tonight really missed the mark. The best thing about the dinner was our waitress, Bridget! The onion soup was served lukewarm. The base had to be bouillon cubes because it was salty enough to melt ice off a sidewalk The salad lettuce was old, wilty limp and tasted old. The rest of the salad was ok, bot nothing special, I can't remember what was in it. My small filet had decent seasoning and was grilled as ordered. It was served lukewarm. I wonder if it was grilled ahead and warmed when ordered. It certainly wasn't sizzling when it arrived. I ordered today's sauce special to put on my filet. It was lukewarm warm, congealed, and tasted like a box mix. I haven't a clue what it was supposed to be! Because we hadn't been disappointed enough, we ordered the peach cobbler. It was served in a goblet and the crust was soggy and gooey and on the whole rather tasteless. Bridget has a great smile, and was diligently attentive without being obnoxious. We were pleased from our appetizer of Stuffed Tater Tots, all the way through to our entre the Sirloin Dinner for Two! It was enough for FOUR! Pleasant, peaceful and cozy atmosphere. EXCELLENT staff. Went to Bynum's on 12/23/22. Had not been in quite sometime. I was still very pleased with my meal. The best part about Bynum's is that you get your steak and it includes a side, soup and a salad. They offer generous portions at a pretty reasonable price. I like the decor and have been going for years. If you are on the south side give this place a try and get the prime rib! read more

We had a reservation for 4:00. We were not seated until 4:15. We did not receive drinks until 4:45- and only had our party got drinks at that point. We did not have anything more complicated than water, tea, or soda. By 5:15 we got our soup. At 5:30 we got our salads and had to ask for our food to go. Some of us had places to go to had a small child. The steak tips were ordered to be medium and came out (in the to go box) as 2 rare and 2 well done. The other order of medium rare steak tips were well done and chewy. Neither baked potato was cooked. Service was horrible. We only saw the waiter when he was bringing us something-which was rare. He was not running around to other tables. This is not a place I will be returning to any time soon. read more

Their $62 Ribeye was not at all worth it; everyone at the table agreed. Besides the cut themselves being horrible, mine was waaaay overcooked, I politely asked for a new one, and it came out barely medium rare. They over-salted them both. It was race weekend, Saturday night and there were plenty of empty tables - now we know why. I took clients and colleagues there and was embarrassed. Been to St. Elmo's with their $80.00 plus Prime Ribs and Extemely expensive other choices of steaks, I guess you pay for the waiters in Black Tuxes and Old World atmosphere! Terrible. Wilol not be returning. Booked a party of 8 for a nice Father's Day dinner at 4pm. Arrived at 3:45 and not seated until 4:20. Said they had run out of silverware and couldn't seat people. Server finally arrived 15 minutes after we were seated, took drink orders (non-alcohol) and it took more than 10 minutes to receive drinks. It went downhill from there. Three people finally told server they had to leave at 5:45 when food still was not there. Server said they were understaffed both in the dining room and kitchen. The place was packed. Took until 6:30 to finish. Management should NOT have booked so many reservations if they could not properly accommodate and serve their guests. Filets were extremely dry and tasteless. We tried speaking with the manager 2-3 times and he just blew us off and was very rude, also acted like he didn't care. Couple other tables were sat after us and left before us. My steak was over cooked first time n 2nd time it was so tough I couldn't eat it. Was not explained to about menu correctly. So we've been meaning to stop in and after a day downtown we thought it would be perfect. We came inside and waited 15 minutes before being greeted. When we were "greeted", it was from a woman with a poor attitude and told "okay 15 - 20 minutes". I had to ask the woman if she wanted a name for the wait and she said "I guess". So we waited 40 minutes and the restaurant was empty. Tables were leaving but no one was being sat and being told anywhere between 10-20 minute wait times. Then she finally sat 5 groups all at once. Once we were finally sat, we waited another 15 minutes before we gave up and left without even getting drinks. I'd understand if they were busy or if servers were running around trying to get the restaurant caught up, but there was nothing happening. No sorry for the wait, no apologies or honesty any care given at all. The gal that was taking names was not only rude to us but also to everyone that came in after. One customer even called her out for her attitude and her response "well it's busy". Again would completely understand if there was ANYONE running around trying to do multiple things, but there was nothing happening, it was slow. She would do circles glancing towards us waiting almost as if hoping we would leave. I've been a restaurant manager for 10 years and I'm very tolerant. We had a great lunch here, taking advantage of the daily special of a filet covered in a buttery parm sauce. The sweet tea was smooth as silk and I didn't have to ask for a second glass. My wife and I had a dinner date here this past Saturday night and I'm not sure what took us so long to try this place out?!?! Why does this place only have 3 1/2 stars??? This place deserves every bit of 4 or 5 stars! My wife and I enjoyed our visit very much! Looking at the menu I was like ok, I expected it to be pricey so that's alright, but then I noticed on the menu a two for $47 deal! That was perfect for my wife and I, started with bread and onion soup which is delicious, then on to the salads which were tasty as well! Once our steak came out we both couldn't believe how ginormous this thing was!!!! Probably one of the best if not THE best steak I've ever had! Our waitress was on it! She was always keeping our drinks full and making sure we were doing alright, she was very friendly! Great job, wished I remembered her name cause she deserves recognition! I like how this place looked inside, and it was very quiet at the time we were there, so made it a nice and relaxing dinner date! I've driven by this location several times when coming home from work so my wife and I decided that we would try it out. This was our first time. It was a Tuesday night around 6:30 when we arrived and we hadn't made a reservation so we had to wait to be seated. About 15 minutes later we were led to our table. The dining sections all have a rustic but clean feeling with quotes from various people as borders on all the walls. Some might find it a little garish but it's not obnoxious. It took several minutes for our waitress to get our drink order but we discovered later that they are extremely understaffed. My wife ordered a sirloin cooked medium well and I ordered the pork chops. The meals included a French onion soup, salad, fresh bread, and a choice of side. We both selected a baked potato. At a table next to us, one of the guests ordered a porterhouse steak that made me regret ordering pork chops. I noticed that she couldn't finish it! It took a while to get each course of our food but it was worth the wait. I'm not a fan of onions, but the French onion soup was so good. If everyone served onions this way, I would become a bigger fan of them! It was delicious. The salad came next and was mixed greens with croutons, onions (which I took off), and grape tomatoes with a good choice of salad dressings. I rarely get Thousand Island dressing but they had it! Then came the main entre. My wife's sirloin was cooked perfectly and it was of fantastic quality and seasoned perfectly. My two pork chops were very good and I finished both of them but had a bit too much salt for my taste. The baked potatoes were cooked just they way we like them and complimented the meal very well. And the bread was so good my wife wanted to take another loaf home with us. The three waitresses stayed very busy taking care of the customers and that is when I asked if they were short-staffed and it was affirmed. My guess is that the kitchen is experiencing the same thing. But despite all of this, I can give this place five-stars because the food was great and the waitresses never remained idle. This is the kind of restaurant I like to visit. After a generous tip, we spent about $65. My advice? Go. The food is fantastic and they really do seem to care about their patrons. read more

Was only able to eat outside edge so didn't notice until got home next day. French onion soup was not nearly as good as I remember it being. Hardly any cheese and it was all on the bottom. Dinner comes with bread,salad (get the homemade blue cheese dressing! Very chunky and good.) a side and they serve you a bowl of onion soup which was very good. Have lived in Indy since 1999 and just now discovered this gem thanks to my foodie friend from Indy. I am originally from Nebraska, so independent steakhouses are a way of life back there. So, to find this place was a pleasant surprise! Took the whole fam there last nite (a Friday). They were hopping and their service was impeccable. The steaks and seafood were absolutely delicious! My teenage kids were blown away. I love this place. Cozy booths, cool bar, very friendly and very proactive servers.
