It had been more than ten years since I last dined at Bynum's. Then, I went with a company luncheon and the placed was packed, the interior was a bit dated, and the service was okay. It wasn't some place I was eager to return. However, on my most recent visit, I came away with a much better impression. I returned for lunch again, and was surprised that the place was relatively empty. Bad for them, but excellent for me as I had attentive service throughout. The interior is all wood: benches, wall coverings, beams (though they do have some interesting quotes written across them in gold). It was rather dark since there are no windows to bring in light. As I entered through a waiting area and then into restaurant, I veered to the right to find the hostess desk. There is a bar area with televisions on the right, but I was directed to the main dining room. The booth was formally set with black napkins and a small oil lamp. Instead of going with the lunch special, I decided to go with their Signature Steakburger and fries, ordered medium well to get a good char. Before long, my meal was brought out: A half pound of beef, charbroiled (great taste) with mozzarella cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and tomato, lettuce, onion, and pickle slices on the side. The fries or potato wedges were hot and had a slight crunch to the outside, but were soft and steamy inside with just a hint of seasoning. The burger, maybe a bit closer to well done, still retained its juiciness. The flavors (except for the pickles which I ate separately) blended quite well and the burger was something I would gladly order again! I'm not sure why the place wasn't busier except that I know a lot of southsiders think spending over $10 for lunch is a sin. Their loss. I very much enjoyed my steak and shrimp. Salad was also very tasty. The warm fresh bread was delicious They did not skimp on the butter. I did not care much for the onion soup as I prefer my cheese floating on top with chunks of bread. Was very disappointed that they did not have a boneless ribeye. Very attentive the drinks were refilled very quickly. The chef came out of the kitchen and asked how everyone liked their steaks everyone was very happy. I've been coming to Bynum's since moving to Indy 7 years ago. I have always loved the steaks, burgers and French onion soup. I think dollar for dollar Bynums competes with the well known Indy steakhouses. My boyfriend and I stopped in for a nice dinner after I returned from a family vacation and found the experience to be unusual. We were sat in a back area and the light for our table was off. We brought it up but we're not moved which was odd. We made the most of it and just sat in the dark for dinner. We ordered steaks - I thought they were overcooked for medium but the service was slow so we didn't send anything back. I'm not likely to give a steakhouse 5 stars. People look for different things in a steakhouse, and while some people go to Outback or Texas Roadhouse and feel abundantly satisfied, others would be horrified by that and won't go anywhere that doesn't have linen table cloths and a sommelier. I'm not fancy, and this restaurant definitely isn't fancy, but if I'm going to pay St. Elmo's prices, which is about where Bynum's prices are, you've gotta show me a lot. And Bynum's did. I went with a friend who's a long-time regular with his family. We each had a beer, mine was craft, his was not. We had a small loaf of bread (I ate most of it). We shared a shrimp cocktail, very spicy, and the sauce was terrific. I'm not sure what I liked so much about it, but I enjoyed it more than when I have it at St. Elmo or Harry & Izzy's. We each had a small side salad, which I ordered with extra dressing that I definitely didn't need. If there is a weakness here it was just that the salad was very small and didn't have much on it. I'd have ordered a regular salad but they didn't offer a regular house salad, everything had chicken or other stuff on it that made it cost well above $10. I didn't want to pay that. But an $8 wedge salad would have been a good option, if they had it. In addition to the salad and bread, the meal came with soup, in this case onion soup, which is totally not my bag but I tried it. It was better than I expected. although I finished only about half of it. My friend ordered the filet, I believe, and enjoyed it. I had been told the prime rib there is about as big as a hubcap, and when I got it I found that to be basically true. It's monstrous. It comes with au jus and horseradish sauce, and a side (I got steak-cut fries that went well everything). It was terrific, and while it was expensive I felt it was worth it and as tasty as anything I'd get at any fancy schmancy restaurant anywhere. I also had a glass of house merlot that was $11. But ok, it definitely added to the taste of the meat. Despite eating all that, we went for dessert options. I chose a slice of Oreo cake that came with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate syrup. It was the perfect sweet ending to a very good meal. The service was terrific, the place is easy to find and get in and out of, and while I said it isn't fancy, it's clean, and everything and everyone stays socially distanced, except in the bathrooms, which are quite small and narrow. I am a fan. From the moment you walk in it has the steak house vibe. After getting our table we ordered two of the signature drinks and they don't disappoint. We split the bone in rib eye and that came with soup, salad , bread and a side. The best thing is for an additional $12.00 you get two of everything. It was more than enough food. The servers are efficient and very friendly. I have actually been wanting to go here for quite some time and it does not disappoint. They have a vast menu with much more than just steak, a full bar, a bar area and ample seating. From downtown Indianapolis it was an easy drive 10 minutes south on Meridian. This was my first trip to this steakhouse and it was well worth the wait. This restaurant is suffering from Covid staff losses and I recommend you make a reservation to cut down on your wait time. Besides are wait this place was amazing well worth the money. My party had the Sirloin for 2 and Chicken fettuccini Alfredo. Sirloin for 2 was amazing it came with a salad and a cup of soup as well as a steak that was worth the cost of the price. Steak was cooked wonderful perfect as we requested. Seasoning was spot on you could tell it was dry aged and had a great beefy flavor. Salad and soup were small but completely understand the steak was massive. For my first time, I'm honestly.... Disappointed. The onion soup tastes as if you licked a salt rock like it was candy. I got the filet, medium rare. It was honestly disgusting. E and I shared an Onion Flower for an appetizer. For entrées, after our Garden Salads, E had the Prime Rib with a side of Steak Fries and I had the Shrimp & Steak with vegetables. Bynum's is a gem hidden to some on South Meridian Street. I love that it's a totally different game than the other steakhouses that surround the circle downtown. It's where you bring friends and family to eat well, not where you impress clients with an expense account. The dark, wood-paneled walls and spindled chairs don't and shouldn't ever change! Both of us chose porterhouse steaks medium with garlic butter and loaded baked potatoes. I chose the creamy chicken with rice soup, as the last time I tried their French onion it was like eating a salt block. It was a good choice, as a neighboring customer returned his soup because it was too salty! However, the chicken rice soup was creamy and delicious, and I'd definitely eat it again! Our steaks were okay, but for a med grill they were really too rare towards the bone, which made the price we paid for them not really worth it. The potatoes were good. Both the table visitor and our server were told by me that my $40 N.Y. strip steak was chewy and grisley. They both just said" we'll let 'them' know" ( who ever 'them' was ). I should have held my ground and demanded a partial credit, I have never left 2/3 rds of a steak on my plate when I left a restaurant but I did this time. It was not worth taking home ! I was not offered a replacement either. In all fairness the people dining with me enjoyed their fish and chicken, but they didn't have steak. I've had strip steak at the best steak joints in Cincinnati, Chicago, and Indy so I know a good steak. This was grocery store steak at best. The place was okay. We were a group of 7. 3 people got exactly what they ordered. 2 people got the wrong steak with their food. They ordered steak and shrimp, they loved the shrimp but it came with a different cut of steak than requested. Fortunately, they were cooked to the right level of done-ness. Those who ordered the chicken Parmesan loved it. For my meal, I ordered the grilled grouper and the baked potato. (Everyone's potato was small. Don't expect a baker). My grouper, if it even was grouper--looked more like tilapia--was not good at all. I basically paid $27 for half a baked potato. One bite of the fish and it tasted burnt or blackened. My husband said he would eat the fish for leftovers. The fish literally stunk up our refrigerator in one day. It was gross and we threw it away. Meals come with soup and salad. Basic iceberg lettuce with a tomato and onion. Nothing special. The soup choices were onion soup or chicken noodle. Onion soup was probably the best thing on the menu according to my husband and the other couple. The service was quick and the waitress was nice. Our drinks were refilled quickly. I'm not sure I would go back. Too many other restaurants that don't get steak cuts mixed up and fish the wrong type and cost this much. It cost $300+ for 7 people. My boyfriend and I had reservations for our anniversary. Made the reservation over a week in advance and called the day before to make sure it will still secure. Day of, we arrive 10 minutes before our reservation. The door was locked so we called and all the person on the other end told us was that they decided to close early. I've been to Bynum's twice for lunch now. When you walk in to the restaurant you walk into a wall. The restaurant is dated and very dark. You have to go around the corner to find the hostess. To my surprise, there was hardly anyone there both times I visited. I ordered the black and blue salad. The steak had a delicious blue cheese topping, however the steak was average. I thought it was very fatty. Overall I thought the high end prices didn't line up with the quality of food. read more
