Wildly popular steakhouse for Indy. The steak is very good here and I'd recommend if you are in the area. It's a busy place so wait staff gets a bit stressed due to their heavy workload and it makes you feel rushed to eat. I called for a reservation 2 days prior and had requested them surprise my daughter with a song when they bring out the complimentary cheesecake slice. I was told they'll sing to her if not too busy. My disappointment is they did neither. Not even a slice of cheesecake. For this I'll give 3 stars and not 4 as it destroyed what I'd planned for my daughter's special meal. For the price, choose another steak place option. The food was good. The service was not relaxing. The restaurant was also hot inside which made our party want to leave asap. If a restaurant is charging 35$ average entree - have your servers tuck in their shirts. If the service was better for the price of the meal, it would have been a better experience all around. When you go out for dinner and pay a lot of money with a larger party, you expect quality attentive service. We rarely got a smile and all staff was either working like crazy or just hated being there. Maybe a bit of both?!? We tipped 20percent. Hire more servers. I would give zero stars if Yelp would allow it. My family has been going to Bynum's for many years and have always had a very good experience at both of the locations. Our recent visit to the Indianapolis restaurant was far from it. I would not be writing this review if the management would have taken action to correct any of the problems we had throughout the dinner- Our salads never arrived, our soup was barely warm, the bread was visibly moldy, but the biggest issue was our lobsters. We always come specifically for the uniqueness in preparation and size of Bynum's lobsters. We received two under cooked lobsters. We were brought a new lobster, yet the assistant manager never returned to the table to check if this one was cooked correctly. It was not. Not a single worker came to our table until we had to go get them in the bar area. This was the worst service my family has ever experienced. We were ignored for no reason. We explained that we were not happy with the final bill we were given- no salads were taken off the bill, despite not even receiving them, only one lobster was taken off, even though all three were under cooked. Again, we waited for the assistant manager to come back to speak with us, since she was the one who brought the new lobster and had been made aware of the other problems at the table. No one returned. We left cash on the table for what food we did eat (our steaks were very good) and the drinks we had. As we walked out we were accused of walking out on the bill by the same assistant manager that would not return to our table. The entire experience was absolutely ridiculous all because of management and their lack effort to resolve the issues we had. We will not be returning. read more

We took our whole family out to dinner, including our grandchildren. It couldn't have been better! All the steaks were made to perfection (a rarity), our sides were wonderful, the service was fabulous and our wait was nil. I love this place! You get giant steaks and they are always delicious. We always get the bang shrimp appetizer which is sweet and spicy. The onion soup comes with the meal and it is great. The service is usually great. However, I'm sure there are some exceptions. The only thing I would change about this place is the limited alcohol selection. Especially the beer. So I went to bynums for first time on March 1st, I was so exited, I LOVE STEAK, so far my favourite in Indianapolis has been texas Roadhouse , I even tried to talk my friend into taking me there because I felt bad for the prices at Bynums (average $40 meal for steak) but he had never been there either so he was like , no, we going . It was the worst food experience I e had in a long time . I truely enjoyed the onion soup and bread..... then came dinner, the steak had absolutely no flavour whatsoever and my baked potatoe wasn't even cooked half way. I did not complain cause I felt bad that my friend took us there and it was so bad to me . he paid $91 plus tip for 2 dinners a water and tea. I didn't touch potato because it was so hard and ate 4 bites of my steak. It was the worst dinner date ever. At Texas Roadhouse we could of got 2 steak dinners, appetiser and alcohalic beverage for an average price of $60 and the food is always made to perfection . Im so disappointed that I couldnt wait to go there and it was so awful !!! I received a gift certificate for $50.00 just a before Christmas, We have been here several times, the food was good, bone-in-ribeye, it's what we always get, this one had a lot of gristle, the service was good, but when we presented the gift certificate they said it was expired, I hadn't even noticed on the red paper the handwritten expiration date, was difficult to read, the date was 12/17/16, that was a week prior that I had received it, they would only honor it for half it's value per "their policy", in my opinion $50.00 is what was paid for it and that is the value I should have received, we were so angry that we WILL NOT return. read more

Would have been higher review for the food and waitstaff but huge disappointment on the negative experience with the hostess Katie on arrival that it immediately put a sour note on the whole evening. We had made a reservation, as you do in these current times, to reduce the need to crowd restaurant reception areas and adhere to social distancing. Katie then told us we needed to go back to our car and wait for until a table was ready. Which is completely understandable despite the fact that we made a reservation BUT her aggressive and unapologetic response to our questions about where we should wait given we had taken an Uber was not only shocking but completely unacceptable in a service industry that is struggling within the current economic environment. We had considered leaving but had been looking forward to the night out and nice meal as a family so waited. When our table was finally ready Katie was so rude and unwelcoming that again we considered leaving . Thankfully Jess our server turned it all around with her friendly demeanour and the night was not completely lost. I understand this is a steakhouse, but do not put items on the menu, such as "delicious" black peppercorn salmon or roasted chicken if you are not going to place the same care for your customers as you do advertising your steak. The salmon was the worst I have ever ordered at any restaurant and sent it back to get charged for it ($21) and the second order, chicken, tasted like the rotisserie chickens at Kroger ($22). Food was brought to us in an assembly line fashion. Salad was the bagged iceberg lettuce. Soup was just a beef onion broth. Went here for my mother in laws birthday dinner only to be the only one not able to eat dinner with my whole family. I had to actually go find our server to tell her my steak was completely rare. They tried three times to cook it correctly but by the time I actually got it my family had finished their entire meals. I let it slide not being able to eat with them bc it was all about my mother in law that night. However, not a single discount or comped item on our receipt. Instead I was given a piece of cheesecake that I don't even like. We had TWO servers handling our table and they still couldn't keep up and actually serve us in a timely manner. I had prime rib, which was much larger than pictured on the menu. Excellent quality and it was prepared as requested. The only fault i'll give it is that it was lightly seasoned, but the jus was good as was the salad, soup and potato. all included. my friend had a fillet which was also excellent quality. First timer to Bynums. It was actually pretty decent. Nice environment. Shrimp cocktail was good the sauce wasn't quit as good as St Elmos but close. My shrimp wasn't chilled to my liking tho a bit warm but still good. The french onion soup was a nice touch. Salad was about regular. The NY Strip was amazing. Nice thick cut cooked to perfection. Well done who ever cooks on Friday nights. My favorite part is the selection of coffee based alcohol drinks. Nothing finishes a fine dinner better than coffee drinks. Decision time comes after he main course as they have several tempestuous deserts from which to choose. Both of us ordered prime rib. But I was not expecting what I got. And it was PRIME RIB! 32 oz with bone in of greatness While the bread and the salad were average (the french dressing was too kechup-like and sweet), the baked potato too; I would say the steakhouse itself was average: the prime rib was a different story altogether. IT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. And the jus, I could have just drunk the whole thing!!! For a small person like me finishing it was impossible: I ate about 2/5ths of the prime rib and took the rest away with me. I can proudly say, I ate it all, albeit in multiple attempts, and not a bit of the jus was left and the bone was bare when I was finally done! I would recommend the prime rib to everyone, but suggest that you starve all day to be able to eat it, or like me take it home and eat the rest at your leisure. I just don't get it, have been to Bynum's many times, and plan on returning there again soon. I have looked at the other reviews and see people complaining about the onion soup being strange, or the salad being average, or the steak being tough, I have never had a bad meal or bad service there. I have eaten everything from porterhouse to lobster there and it's always been perfect. I don't care about how the place is decorated, I am there to eat, not be impressed by the decor. If you want to go to a fancy, upscale, hip place, go downtown Indy, spend twice the money for a meal that isn't half as good. But if you want a great meal, in a nice clean place, with good service, at a fair price, then Bynum's is it. We have been there several times and I always enjoyed my food. Last night was a whole new experience. First the majority of the food was lukewarm...french onion soup and broccoli were darn right cold. We ordered a bone in filet.....couldn't even get close to the bone......so a ton of meat was left that I couldn't get.....no matter how hard I tried. The service was mediocre..asked for lemon wedge I never got. Told waitress soup was cold....she didn't do a thing about it. Shrimp was burned.....I mean tasted like charcoal...took waitress 25 minutes to bring back more......had to ask her twice. Seriously, this was the worst meal I've had there. He then reappeared with the wiping cloth slung over his should (directly under his long hair) placing bread plates on the tables with his bare hands, I presume right after tossing the disgusting table wiping cloth over his shoulder. My son Gary, who lives 4 hours away, asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day and I said, "the best prime rib I can get". So he did the internet search and knowing I don't like to go downtown, chose Bynum's as I live on the southside of Indy. As it was Mother's Day weekend, he made reservations and we arrived on time and were seated right away. As it turned out, our waitress (Mekayla) was the lady he made the reservation with and she was very friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered the prime rib (medium) and my daughter-in-law (Mary) decided to share it with me because of the 32 oz size. Gary ordered the ribeye (well done) with baked potato. Mary and I ordered the mixed vegetables with our meal. The salad (iceberg lettuce) was fresh and the cup of onion soup was delicious. They said the bread was very good. Gary's ribeye was cooked medium and very dry with some kind of dry rub on it so he asked them to cook it well done, which they did. The vegetables on Mary and my plates were dried out and looked as if they had been cooked the day before. The prime rib was the worst I've ever eaten ~ full of fat and gristle. I don't think we got 15 good bites between the two of us. This was an expensive meal and very disappointing. I will not be back. read more

They arranged us in a great spot which was conducive to visiting one another. The waitress was great, pleasant and efficient. She was not at all thrown back by our size. Wife and I had dinner here on Saturday, 7/2, @ 6:30. Restaurant was maybe 1/3 full, probably due to it being a holiday weekend. We were promptly seated in a booth, given water and had our drink orders taken. Ordered a bottle of wine from a limited quality menu, but then the prices weren't ridiculous either. Ordered the shrimp cocktail. Their cocktail sauce is much more "eater-friendly" than St. Elmo's; while it still has a kick and will tickle your sinuses with its horseradish, it won't take your breath away if you get more than just a taste of it on your shrimp! Wife ordered the prime rib and I ordered the special for the evening, a 7 oz. filet with onion and bleu cheese topping, both with a baked potato, and onion soup and salad included. I had the made in-house honey-mustard dressing and wife had the made in-house French dressing. The honey-mustard was creamy and the best I've ever had; the wife said the French was also excellent. The onion soup was very good. Yes, the cheese is on the bottom as others have said, but they tell you that when they bring it to you. Don't know why this is a big deal to some people...! It's still very good. Wife's prime rib was huge (32 oz., I think); plenty to take home! She ordered it medium-well (as opposed to medium rare where it's usually cooked to) and it was done just right. It came with both au jus and horseradish sauce. It was very good. Ordered my filet medium-rare. It maybe leaned a little more to the rare side, but was still very good and not worth the time to send back for another couple minutes of grilling. As opposed to what some others have said, the baked potatoes were a good sized (not gigantically wasteful) and were perfectly done with a slightly salty skin. Only very minor issue is that they give you plenty of butter, but barely over a thimble-full of sour cream. They did bring two more small servings when my wife asked though. Overheard the server giving the extensive list of dessert choices to another table and, even though we were too full to have any, they sounded quite good. Our service, between two different servers, was very attentive, yet unobtrusive...water glasses filled multiple times, empty plates cleared promptly, etc. To dispel some other reviews on here...this is not in "the hood" as someone from Zionsville has stated. No, it doesn't have over $300K houses around it, but it has well-kept older homes...maybe that's considered "the hood" for some people from Zionsville (and no, I don't live in the area around the restaurant). Some people just need to get their noses out of the air if they have a problem with a neighborhood like this, or the unassuming décor of the restaurant, or the attire of the clientele. Just enjoy the food and the company of those with you. Anyway, off my soapbox...we've eaten at all the high-priced steak restaurants downtown and in other cities. Our two experiences at Bynum's over the last couple of years have been nothing but good, with the food being equal to those restaurants. The quality of meat is comparable, so the price is not excessive (as several have stated) seeing as how your bread, salad and soup are all included. I guess some people think it should be cheaper because the servers aren't in suits/tuxes and the surroundings not as "posh." I'm sure there have been times when the service is not as good as it should be and times when the food isn't prepared perfectly, but I've seen that happen at any restaurant. If you want a very good quality steak in quaint, unpretentious surroundings, Bynum's is a great choice. read more

In there on Sunday 11/9/14- seems like this place has no concept of customer service and according to my waitress, blonde, with pony tail, they are short staffed and that was the excuse for poor service. Food was adequate but highly over priced for what it was. Prime Rib is huge in size but small in flavor. Rice was hard, soup was luke warm. Myself, My Husband and a friend went to Bynum's Steakhouse for Dinner Friday evening. We were greeted warmly and sat almost immediately. Our waiter took our drink orders and I ordered a Ice Tea with extra ice. (FYI, I am a ice freak .lol.) My friend wanted a alcoholic beverage and wasn't sure what he wanted, the waiter asked what kind of drinks he liked. My friend told the waiter several drinks he liked and the waiter told him he would make a drink he thought my friend would like. when the waiter returned with our drinks he actually had a mini pitcher of ice for me. the drink he made my friend was Delicious. Our French Onion Soup was hot and had a lot of Cheese. Our Bread Was warm. The Salads were lacking a bit. No croutons or cheese. We ordered 2 Appetizers The Boom Boom Shrimp and the Shrimp Cocktail. The Shrimp Cocktail was AWESOME. The Shrimp Cocktail Sauce is to die for. The Boom Boom Shrimp was overcooked. I ordered the Rib Eye, it was Melt in your mouth and large enough to share with my Husband. My friend ordered the New York Strip it was cooked to perfection. My baked potato was undercooked. This was not good at all. Started off with a dirty glass and something floating in my water. Then got their famous "onion soup" that basically was shredded cheese on the bottom with lukewarm instant onion soup. The salad was confusing as it had a spring mix with iceberg lettuce which was room temperature as was the dressing. I haven't been to Bynums in about 8 years. I used to really like their prime rib, so I made a reservation and took my mom to dinner for Mothers Day. We ordered the 32 Oz. Prime Rib to share, so we each got onion soup, salad, and choice of potato with our giant prime rib to share. $59 total for the both of our meals. First out was the onion soup, seriously SO GOOD. I'm not a big fan of onion soup usually. This was fantastic, great flavor! Next up was our salad, lacking in appearance and ingredients however the homemade blue cheese dressing was incredible, seriously delicious. Then came out our giant prime rib and our baked potatoes. We ordered the meat cooked medium, when it got to our table it looked like it had been boiled and I cut into it and it was bloody raw. We told the waitress and she took it back to the kitchen for a re-do. After several minutes it returned with some chives thrown on top and again pretty much looked boiled. But I cut into it and was better cooked. It had ZERO seasoning on it and the au jus basically tasted like water, but it was warm and brown moonlighting as au jus. In order to make it taste halfway decent we were continually adding salt to the meat and dipping it in the horseradish sauce. The horseradish sauce was very tasty (thank god). We ate it and then I paid the bill for $98. I'm completely okay with spending a chunk of money to eat GREAT food. But this was very underwhelming. I was so disappointed I brought my Mom here for Mother's Day. I'm not sure what happened in 8 years, but they really need to work on their prime rib. Find the seasoning and throw it on the grill. I'm not sure how you charge $47 for what you're serving. The other high point of the evening was our waitress, Courtney. She was wonderful, happy, polite, and attentive. It had been several years since we had been to Bynum's and had never had a bad experience until last night. We had a reservation but it didn't seem to matter, we weren't seated until 25 minutes after our reservation. Our table was outside the bar and my son was squashed up against a fire extinguisher. If we had moved the table we would have had to introduce ourselves to the tables next to us. Our waiter seemed to be adequate starting out but that soon changed. Drink service was his forte' but mine was the only one he had to refill. Our food came out slowly, my son and grandson shared a meal and we had to remind the waiter and ask for an extra plate. My porterhouse was room temperature when it arrived and was on a plate so small that I had to pile my broccoli on top of it to be able to cut it. My granddaughter's beef tips were ordered well and were burnt on all of the edges. We kept waiting for bread and kept an eye out for our waiter to no avail. Finally when everyone except me was done eating he reappeared and I asked about the possibility of getting some bread. Our waiter said that they had to wait on the bread and agreed that he had not brought any to our table. He said he would see if he could bring some out then, never did apologize for the wait or for us having to ask for it. We had to track down the hostess to tell her that we had some leftovers and would like to take them with us, she was very helpful but shouldn't have to do our waiter's job. When my granddaughter asked if the waiter could make the leftovers with the swan Bynum's is known for he replied that yes he could if he had any foil handy. Instead he just shoved it into a Styrofoam box. This was her first time to Bynum's and was so excited when I described the foil swans to her earlier that day. Needless to say she was very disappointed. What should have been a fun birthday celebration was spoiled by the bad service and less than stellar food. Sadly, this was a very disappointing experience. No reservation, so a 30 min wait was reasonable. When server arrived to take our order, we had to ask for a wine/beer menu and were told they were out at the moment. My filet mignon, cooked medium, was dry and flavorless. I had a better steak at texas roadhouse. My upcharged liaded baked potato was smaller than a baseball & bary loaded. The salad, iceburg and two small tomatoes. Their "cheese on bottom" onion soup was good, but the plastic cheese never melted. When Our food was dropped off, a server popped by to see if everything came out then took off before we could respond or request anything, then did not return until she asked us if we wanted dessert. We did not get the tray display like everyone else and she quickly dumped our check. When she collected the check from me, with my credit card, she returned handing it to my boyfriend. What I'm confused about is when i go to T.R. snd order the same thing i leave full with doggie bags; i left Bynum's hungry but too nauseated because of the bill and the experience.
