C & J has good cheesesteak and fries, keep the chef on shift. I liked C & J, i just wouldn't dine in again. There was nothing wrong with the service per say. But as you can see in the photos the menus are stained with dirt, the table had stains on it which as a costumer that's usually what will cause me to be very demure about my exit. (Chuck Berry) There we were in Fairbanks, a whole slew of our Alaska cruise survivors at the end of a long adventure. Hotel check out was 10:00 but everyone was flying out late at night. So what were we to do to spend the day? After taking a bus to visit North Pole, Alaska, we asked our fantastic bus driver Chris to recommend a lunch stop and she came up with C&J Drive In. I'm so glad she did because we ABSOLUTELY LOVED C&J. This is the kind of place Chuck Berry would have felt at home in - a non pretentious hamburger & shake joint with a definite 1950's vibe. Kudos go to our fantastic server Brooklann, who was as sweet and charming as could be! She handled our big group with ease and effortlessly took care of separate checks. I ordered a taco burger with onion rings and my wife ordered a Petite Burger with Tots. The food was great and came out of the kitchen piping hot and fresh. Some days we roll into Fairbanks in the hopes of finding a good hamburger and that can be a challenge when we're really hungry. We stumbled into the C & J Drive In with dreams of frosty mug root beers and juicy burgers. The service was quick and the frosty mug of root beer I got made my husband jealous as he'd ordered ice tea. Our burgers were thick and juicy. We both groaned as we ate far more than our usual amounts. This is a fun place to visit with the whole family. Went looking for a Yelp find and they were closed for a family vacation. Started looking for another place and saw C&J Diner down the road. It caught my attention with good signage, distinctive appearance and a good feeling. One side is counter service and the other is sit down in a beautifully decorated dining room. Waited 5 seconds for a waitress to appear and seat us. Took our drink order, was back in one minute asking about our day and being very friendly. I ordered the Halibut Fish & Chips while the Wife had the Original Philly Cheesesteak, both with fries. The food was delivered within five minutes and was fresh and hot. Excellent crinkle fries were some of the best I've ever had. The halibut was four good size pieces with a thin, crispy coating so I tasted fish and not breading. Excellent dish. The Cheesesteak was also very good with beefy tasting steak sliced thin with a smooth, tasty cheese sauce over the top, not heavily dressed as some are, but a thin coating that let you taste the excellent beef. This was one of k favorite lunch over the last few years. Spotless bathrooms only reinforced my five star rating! read more

I won't be back. This was the chicken fried steak I was so looking forward to. Figures, not homemade but a frozen patty bought from a chain and no cream gravy and put on a bun that had tiny chopped lettuce... no sauce. $ money wasted on crap. To provide this food at this price tells me they don't care about quality or customers returning.... In for the quick buck. So gross... the standard, the quality, the food. If you advertise a chicken fried steak then make a chicken fried steak with gravy. THIS is why so many local places close down because they try to cut corners and go shopping at major stores. You're empowering big companies to take over because you are cutting corners. People will pay for a quality meal anywhere, you just have to provide it and include the cost of transport which seems to be everyone's excuse for cutting corners. Be assumed that this was of much better variety; strong bread holding a hefty amount of hot beef in a tangy bbq sauce. The crinkle cut fries were standard, but done right. My wife had a late breakfast, ordered a blt, and was satisfied. Good customer service. Though not on the menu, the waitress made me a perfect chocolate coke. Wanted to try somewhere new , which led us to C&Js ! According to online , it was a drive thru. When I got there I was surprised to see it is not a drive thru, more of a drive up. You read a menu on the side of the building & call a phone number when ready to place your order. The menu is easy to read, except there are no prices. So if your in a tight budget this would be a tricky place to eat at. After ordering, it took 26 minutes for the food to be brought to the car. I felt that was really long considering I ordered a cheesesteak and a salad. Your options to pay are cash or they bring a machine to run your card outside. We ordered a cheesesteak , just meat & cheese with extra cheese and fries. The cheesesteak was $13. Extra cheese was $2 and sub fries instead of chips was $3. So $18 in total. I was disappointed with the lack of cheese. If this was extra, I would be surprised to see what normal cheese would be? The fries were seasoned well and crispy. Cheesesteak all in all was ok, nothing to write home about. We also ordered a salad. The options were chef or lettuce salad. So I opted for the lettuce salad and asked if they could add chicken. Was given the option of grilled or crispy. Choose grilled. The lettuce salad was $6. The addition of grilled chicken was $5. It was a salad, nothing special. But it was the saddest $11 salad I have ever received. The food was ok. Service was ok. Prices were ok. But that's just it, everything was ok. Would I come back ? So we went to c&j after we found Fenders closed. We had family from Healy with us. We were looking for wings, burgers and maybe another sandwich. We had issues with the waitress mixing up our drinks. It happened like 6 times for the time we were there. My cheese steak bun split as I picked it up. They remade it for me. Just steak cooked with cheese wiz on it. Very salty. We got wings, they were overcooked and had a sauce that had what tasted like BBQ sauce, Frank's hot sauce mixed together. We just ate and left. Was very disappointed overall with C and Js. Came here after a long day of snowboarding with 3 friends. We chose to sit inside and was greeted by a couple loudly arguing which went on for at least 10 minutes. You could tell the entire restaurant felt uncomfortable but the staff did nothing to solve the problem. The milkshake was the best part of our meal. Ok I hadn't been here in years until we last minute decided to pop in two nights ago, and I'm still thinking about how amazing it was. Our waitress was super attentive. Our appetizers came out in minutes. Our drinks stayed full the whole time. The food was AMAZING. Especially for how affordable it is. We have a bunch of kids who are all quite picky and they devoured their food. The portions are good for the price. The Alaskan burger is a classic fav of mine but I went with a French dip and it was super good. They probably have the best onion rings in town. Right up there with pikes who used to be my fav. Im not sure if it's new owners or maybe just new kitchen staff / waitresses, but seriously total 180 since I was last in there. 10/10 crushed it for our giant family read more

Thoroughly disappointed with this "drive in". First of all, it's a sit-down restaurant not an order-at-the-counter place. The burgers are made with pressed beef pre-forms that are particularly unappetizing. My girlfriend had the clam strip basket--apparently the cook didn't get the order right, because he sent fried strips of rubber band. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

The only reason I ever really come here is for the malts, I know they're from a mix that they just throw in the blender but they're actually pretty good. Unfortunately most everything else isn't worth getting. The fries taste like the fryer oil and don't have any salt, the cheesesteaks are subpar, the burger patties are so incredibly thin it looks like they cut the premade frozen ones into thirds, chili on the chili dog is bland, there's nothing there that makes me want to have a meal. After reading other yelp reviews, I must say that the Alaska supreme does have 3 smaller thin patties spread across the burger. I love it this way! Not to much meat. It evens out the burger completely. If you want the same style burger but with more meat, get the C&js double that has 2 quarter pound patties. Cute place. Quiet Great food. :) read more

Fairbanks isn't exactly known for its fine food. That being said.... The food here is.. Well... it makes me wish I was eating grade school cafeteria slop. I've eaten here several times and if there is one positive thing I can say.... They are consistent. The interesting thing about C&J is, they have managed to put out menu that consist entirely of miniaturized American food. The aroma of delicate tiny burgers & hot dogs fill the air. The quality you ask? Well prepare to be underwhelmed. Perhaps it's the fact that every time I have eaten here it has been -20 or cooler outside. Perhaps the chill of Fairbanks in the winter sucks the moisture from the food, shrinking it in size and sapping out its flavor. Perhaps.... just perhaps.... Its just not good food. read more

Second time here. Yummy diner eats. The shakes are really good. The wait staff is very pleasant and easily answered all our questions we had about trying different items on the menu. Old fashioned juke box plays old school diner and makes for a family friendly, laid back atmosphere. The all alskan cheese steak sandwich wwont leave you wanting anyrhing else but a nap. Nothing special, but you can have food brought to your car. Overpriced, but what isn't in Alaska. The all Alaskan cheese steak was good, but nothing spectacular. Definitely recommend them getting beanless chili for their hotdogs and to only serve fresh onion rings, ours were stale and inedible. Not a must eat place, but worth a stop if you are hungry and close by. I was very disappointed in the food here! After reading some reviews and they state that it is good food, it really isn't. I got their Alaska Supreme Burger, which is the most expensive burger and it was SMALL!!! It tasted ok, but it wasn't special. It was 3 patties, bacon, and cheese on a hoagie style bun. You would think it sounds big right?! The patties on it were thinner than the cheapest hamburger at McDonalds, and 2 slices of bacon. My coworker got the double burger with cheese and onions on it and his burgers were 4 times as thick for a few bucks less! It didn't make any sense. The fries were ok, I had mine with Garlic Seasoning on them, so it gave them a little better taste. This isn't a place I recommend and I wouldn't return, I would rather eat at McDonalds before I would eat here again. Server was awesome, she was funny and would crack jokes. Very nice girl. Atmosphere is like an old diner, old ads/paper clippings/car ads were posted all around and on your table. I had high hopes, it looked like a place I could return to, but the food was bad, so I won't return. read more

While the prices at nearly every single restaurant in Alaska can be considered a "rip off", C and J's is even worse. Why? Because it's a crappy place in a crappy part of town. $3.50 for a SMALL side of fries and $3.00 for a tiny fountain drink is just stupid. My hot dog was good, fries were ok. Prices were terrible!
