The restaurant was quite crowded with cruise passengers coming and going, but we were able to consolidate a few of our reservations to have our big group sit together. Our food package got us plenty, but I'm including the menu prices FYI below. I started with a fantastic cocktail by the name of "Summer Solstice". It was a martini glass with coconut rum, vodka, pineapple juice, grenadine. Well worth $10. My appetizer was a nice portion of Calamari strips with a very zippy jalapeno cilantro sauce ($16). My entree was a big portion of Grilled Salmon with rice pilaf and vegetables ($36). My dessert was an yummy combination dish of ice cream, banana pudding, toasted coconut and caramel sauce. (No wonder I gained 6 pounds after my Alaskan trip). I thought the food was quite good and the Red Lantern's staff and kitchen performed very well under trying conditions. I can only attest to the bar area and service, which was excellent. I was grubby and dirty from a long day of activities and although a cold local beer would've been welcome, I needed something stronger. The bartender was thankfully nonplussed by my appearance. (It is Alaska, overall, very much like Vermont). I wanted to try the signature cocktail, a layered (known as a pouilly-fussé in French) beverage of Cruzan coconut rum, peach schnapps, Mindoro, hibiscus tea, orange juice and pineapple. Otherwise known as a foo-foo drink that I was hoping would help me sleep (after four days of insomnia). It was fruity and tasty, with a fun, flashy (literally) plastic "ice" cube. I sucked it down fairly quickly to ensure its efficacy, ordered two waters to go and off to my room for a quick shower before bed. It definitely helped me sleep. Highly recommend. Tried 5 things from here: 1) Fried fish (halibut) with fries and cole slaw, 2) Steak with fries & ceasar salad, 3) Cheeseburger with fries, 4) bumbleberry pie with vanilla ice cream, 5) Alaskan White draft beer. The fried fish (halibut) was quite tasty with the tartar and ketchup sauce, fries was delicious and crispy, but the cole slaw was a bit too vinegarish. The steak with fries and ceasar salad was the worst. The steak was overcooked and hard despite being requested medium well. The fries was delicious but the ceasar salad was drenched with too much sauce and a bit vinegarish. The bumbleberry pie with vanilla ice cream was so-so. Pie was not super fresh and very citrusy/sour because of the berries. Vanilla ice cream was good. The cheeseburger was so-so & lacked taste. Unlike most of the other comments, we didn't really have an issue with the service. Our waitress (Jessie) was being worked to the bone, but she was still super sweet and an absolute gem. The food on the other hand, wow, what an atrocity! The wings were cold, crab cakes ok, but the nail in the coffin for me was the seafood fettuccine alfredo. The fettuccine was practically raw and swimming in a soup of oil. The seafood part of it was nothing, but frozen seafood you'd find at a place like red lobster. If it wasn't for the fact that we were without a car and it was already 9pm, we would've definitely sent the food back and went somewhere else. Not to mention - holy hell, the prices! The continental breakfast they have is complimentary to hotel customers! Breakfast included pastries, bacon, eggs and potatoes - I can't complain but my only suggestion is to rotate the food choices. Giving this place a 4 star mainly because of the great customer service from one of the waitresses named Karen. She is one of the sweetest and most attentive severs I've met! First of all don't even bother looking at the menu online. I looked at it and I had my heart set on reindeer meatloaf. When the menu came to the table it was a dirty piece of paper and didn't look like the menu online. I asked the waitress if we could have reindeer meatloaf she said we don't have reindeer meatloaf,I said I saw it online. She said we don't have it and this is real this is not online and our online menu hasn't been updated in a long time. My wife asked if she could substitute mashed potatoes for red potatoes and the waitress pointed at the menu and said red potatoes. I'm not complaining about the food we ate it was good she had a ribeye and it was very tender and tasty I had a rib sandwich and it also was very tender and tasty. But it was not what I wanted based on their original menu. I don't get to Fairbanks very often but if I do I will not go back to this restaurant. read more

Staying at Westmark Fairbanks hotel and didn't want to "go out" to eat so just walked downstairs to grab a quick bite. The Red Lantern is one of those places that could get away with half-way decent food and mediocre service for the convenience of it, but they are so not like this AT ALL! The staff were all cheerful, helpful and accommodating. Hubby wanted the ribeye steak that was on the "After 5" menu but it was only just after 4 PM. Our waitress said it was not a problem as long as he didn't want a baked potato with it because they weren't ready yet. He didn't, so he got a beautiful salad instead. I had the French Dip with cole slaw and a pickle slice. I particularly mention the pickle because it was so crisp and tasty! This is the restaurant located in the Westmark hotel. The Westmark is a cruise ship oriented hotel. It's a beautiful hotel and has a gift shop, Starbucks, another restaurant, cruise info areas, and a huge front entrance. The restaurant is smaller than most and has a small menu. It has grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, soup, salad, burgers, and dishes specific to Alaska; fried halibut, reindeer meatloaf, reindeer burgers, and seafood chowder. I ordered the halibut and it was good, nothing spectacular. What was spectacular was the service. The servers are very welcoming and attentive. The manager even came around and asked us how we were doing and made a few trips to make sure we were ok. I also ordered the onion soup, it came with an extra surprise... a hair. On the upside that was comped for me and they gave me a new one to take with me. I did not expect that at all. The rest of my group ordered, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, and a pulled pork sandwich. Everyone enjoyed their own respective meals. Make sure you are hungry if you want the pulled pork, 2/3 of it was taken to go. Overall this is a nice place to get a bite to eat. After four visits I disagree with the 2.5 star rating. It's not 5 stat but few hotel restaurants are. It's off season so I'm at the bar side because the main restaurant is only open during tourist season. My wife hasn't left the hotel during the last 3 days of conference and has eaten every meal here and says it's quite good. I missed the free breakfast this morning but she said it has the standard fare of eggs, a meat and breads. I had the $13 omelette which was huge and really good. See pic, it covered 75% of the plate. I couldn't eat it all. I have $7 off card for skipping room service. Not sure if this is common or not. The hotel is full for conference so I figure they only offer it in times like this. It's not good enough to make a special trip here to eat, but if I'm in the hotel I'll likely not leave to eat out. read more

Wow, we were pleasantly surprised with some great appetizers we had here after a long day of travel from Florida. The pulled pork on the pulled pork flatbread was truly exceptional and the real deal. With mild red/yellow peppers, onions, cheese, and balsamic drizzle, this was very, very good. The Golden nuggets were awesome. Potato/cheese/caving/green onion balls, breaded and deep fried, accompanied by a warm bacon/cheese dip, these were awesome. We sat and ate buy the bar and had great service from the bartenders, too. This restaurant is in Westmark Hotel where I stayed during my visit to Fairbanks, AK. Waited at the entrance per the sign "please wait to be seated." After a little less than 5 mins another guest came up to me and said "they are just going to ignore you so I'd just sit down if you want to eat. I didn't personally think just sitting at a random table was the right thing to do so I found a server that was not busy and asked her if I could sit down somewhere for breakfast. She looked at me like I was from another planet and said "well you could if you wanted I guess" so I replied ok where would you like me to sit? She replied I'd like you to come back later when there's another server on because I'm trying to leave. So I left the hotel I was staying in which included this restaurant (so convenient) and walked 8 blocks in 8 degree weather to find another place. Wish I could say I'd give this place another chance to actually review the food but I will not be going back into The Red Lantern even if it is in my hotel. My family and I went to this restaurant after a days worth of traveling because it was easy and in the hotel we were staying at. The table ordered hummus, vegetable soup with a ham and cheese sandwich and croquets. The food was sub par to say the least. My order was the hummus and I could not bring myself to eat it. It was SOUR!! The second it touched my tongue I recoiled in disgust. Never have I tasted hummus so rank. The ham sandwich was served on a pretzel bun and was more like something you would find at a rundown airport. The soup wasn't horrible but it certainly wasn't good. It lacked flavor and substance. The croquets were pretty average and came with a cheese sauce. The only reason this review has two stars is because of the service. Everyone we spoke to in the restaurant was very kind. Our waitress was attentive to our needs and provided us with some fun facts about Alaska, places to see and things too do. She also told us a little about herself; prompted by us. This restaurant is located inside the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel. We arrived after a long day of travelling and decided to eat dinner at the restaurant on property. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I had the Reindeer Meatloaf with mashed potatoes. I had never tried reindeer meat, so I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and eat what Alaskans eat. It was strange to think that maybe one of Santa's reindeer rejects somehow ended up on my plate, but once I got over that thought, it was pretty yummy. The carrots were also quite interesting as I have never had a "round" carrot (it looked like it was made with a melon baller) or a purple carrot before. Nevertheless, they were quite tasty. Seated and forgotten which was to my surprise! Because there were no cars in the parking lot and the entire restaurant had only 3 tables seated including us. The hostess seated us and told us that Megan would be our server. After ten minutes of no contact a very Hefty male server walked by us and said he'd be with us shortly. Instead, he went to spend an an additional ten minutes bussing tables and doodling around at the cash machine. As a party of four "Senior women" walked in and got greeted with much more enthusiasm than we received, we donned our coats slowly and left. We were not about to watch another larger party get treated well when I wasn't even treated half way decent. The food is good! when you do get service. But unfortunately the way it works is: service needs to be provided before food is ordered or received. This bad service is actually pretty typical of Fairbanks food and beverage industry. Amazing. Damon was the best bartender and had great suggestions from the menu. He suggested the burger, Cheeseburger, I believe and it was moist, delicious, and worth visiting the restaurant. I also had the ice cream for dessert and recommend the huckleberry. I see a lot of criticism of the service but I have no complaints.
