people sitting at tables in a restaurant

"He's a ghost, he's a god He's a man, he's a guru But hidden in his coat Is a red right hand" (Nick Cave) Red Lantern is one of the two house restaurants at the Westmark Fairbanks and a group of us had an enjoyable dinner there last week. The restaurant was quite crowded with cruise passengers coming and going, but we were able to consolidate a few of our reservations to have our big group sit together. Our food package got us plenty, but I'm including the menu prices FYI below. I started with a fantastic cocktail by the name of "Summer Solstice". It was a martini glass with coconut rum, vodka, pineapple juice, grenadine. Well worth $10. My appetizer was a nice portion of Calamari strips with a very zippy jalapeno cilantro sauce ($16). My entree was a big portion of Grilled Salmon with rice pilaf and vegetables ($36). My dessert was an yummy combination dish of ice cream, banana pudding, toasted coconut and caramel sauce. (No wonder I gained 6 pounds after my Alaskan trip). I thought the food was quite good and the Red Lantern's staff and kitchen performed very well under trying conditions. The place was packed!

I can only attest to the bar area and service, which was excellent. I was grubby and dirty from a long day of activities and although a cold local beer would've been welcome, I needed something stronger. The bartender was thankfully nonplussed by my appearance. (It is Alaska, overall, very much like Vermont). I wanted to try the signature cocktail, a layered (known as a pouilly-fussé in French) beverage of Cruzan coconut rum, peach schnapps, Mindoro, hibiscus tea, orange juice and pineapple. Otherwise known as a foo-foo drink that I was hoping would help me sleep (after four days of insomnia). It was fruity and tasty, with a fun, flashy (literally) plastic "ice" cube. I sucked it down fairly quickly to ensure its efficacy, ordered two waters to go and off to my room for a quick shower before bed. It definitely helped me sleep. Highly recommend. Tip your bartenders well.

Fish (halibut) and chips with cole slaw

Tried 5 things from here: 1) Fried fish (halibut) with fries and cole slaw, 2) Steak with fries & ceasar salad, 3) Cheeseburger with fries, 4) bumbleberry pie with vanilla ice cream, 5) Alaskan White draft beer. The fried fish (halibut) was quite tasty with the tartar and ketchup sauce, fries was delicious and crispy, but the cole slaw was a bit too vinegarish. The steak with fries and ceasar salad was the worst. The steak was overcooked and hard despite being requested medium well. The fries was delicious but the ceasar salad was drenched with too much sauce and a bit vinegarish. The bumbleberry pie with vanilla ice cream was so-so. Pie was not super fresh and very citrusy/sour because of the berries. Vanilla ice cream was good. The cheeseburger was so-so & lacked taste. The Alaskan White draft beer was delicious and tasted fruity! Staff was very nice and attentive.

By far the worst restaurant in Fairbanks. Ordered a bbq chicken dinner. We received a burnt chicken wing. Service was great food terrible!!! 30 dollars for a burnt wing, frozen veggies, and rice!! Do not come here!!

Soup of day creamy tomatoes was good

Well.... to start - the breakfast here was not very good. Eggs dry. And lack of selections. But it was continental anyways so- Lunch was off to a good start with Sweet waiter Renee and the tomato soup of the day. I ordered a dirty martini because I saw on the menu their fancy ones were only $7.50 - but it came to me so small and watered down. Then when I got bill it was $13.50 !! I was shocked and disappointed. $3.75 per sip ! Lol gosh. So lame. I ordered the sole fish. It was just okay. They covered up The fish taste with a fancy breading. But it still was not enough. The Fries were good enough. Renee was a great waiter and the food came out fast. It just really wasn't very good. And the bartender def doesn't make a good martini -

Cold wings, crab cakes, raw pasta and red lobster grade seafood.

Unlike most of the other comments, we didn't really have an issue with the service. Our waitress (Jessie) was being worked to the bone, but she was still super sweet and an absolute gem. The food on the other hand, wow, what an atrocity! The wings were cold, crab cakes ok, but the nail in the coffin for me was the seafood fettuccine alfredo. The fettuccine was practically raw and swimming in a soup of oil. The seafood part of it was nothing, but frozen seafood you'd find at a place like red lobster. If it wasn't for the fact that we were without a car and it was already 9pm, we would've definitely sent the food back and went somewhere else. Not to mention - holy hell, the prices! I mean I know it's a tourist trap, but eeeesh. Not worth the quality!

    reindeer meatloaf!
    Katrina H.

The food was decent - I feel like it had limited selection and the steak I ordered wasn't very tender. The reindeer meatloaf was flavorful and had great texture. The continental breakfast they have is complimentary to hotel customers! Breakfast included pastries, bacon, eggs and potatoes - I can't complain but my only suggestion is to rotate the food choices. Giving this place a 4 star mainly because of the great customer service from one of the waitresses named Karen. She is one of the sweetest and most attentive severs I've met! It was my first time visiting Alaska and she gave me helpful tips and made my stay very welcoming.

Came in to Fairbanks in the afternoon and while staying at the westmark, was hungry before I could get my bearings. Decided to order a burger from the red lantern. It was incredible. Cooked to perfection, the fries were soooo good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

At first they were not busy but as it got closer to an hour opened, they started getting busier which still was not very loud. We were seated, drinks and menu given quickly. Order taken and food provided as it was made hot - which took less than 15 minutes to get all of it. The waitress was nice and had a lovely smile. She made sure we were taken care of and we didn't feel forgotten. She did seem to be the only server, yet she seemed to be good at her job. We would definitely come back here. We got; waffle combo with over medium eggs, & reindeer sausage. French combo, and hot chocolate. Strawberry waffle combo, bacon, and sunny side up eggs.

Fries here are great too! Staff here are great! Since we came here near closing time, they actually offered us some of their leftover soup since it would have been tossed out. Definitely hate wasting food, so that offer was accepted very quickly. I didn't realize until after leaving why Blue Roof Bistro has its name. It's because...the roof is blue heh. When we arrived, we found out that you'd need a reservation to dine in the main dining hall, so we ended up going to the Saloon side where we had to find our own seats. We sat near the pool table, and the chairs were super unstable. The staff were fine but clearly seemed busy and understaffed. It took a long time for them to bring us water and take our order. I tried flagging the waitress 2-3 times when she was passing by and felt very ignored especially as I've made eye contact with her a few times. We ended up ordering the fried seafood combo and the seafood chowder, and it ended up taking at least 20min to come out (even the soup). The dishes were all very salty and definitely needed a lot of water to go with the food. Overall, definitely not a place to go before a flight since you might not be able to get in and out very quickly, and the food was really just alright for the price. Perhaps the main dining room experience would be better but I still wouldn't recommend it given the food quality and service.
