I went here earlier today with my partner hoping to get a decent meal for dinner. The ambiance was nice as well as the music. The appetizers were generous in the portions that was given. My problem that I had was with the skirt steak that I ordered, I ordered the steak medium rare & received it well done. I'm not one to go back & forth about things like this all the time because I've had experiences where my food was violated because the chef didn't like that I sent it back. A well done steak isn't the end of the world though. The end of the world is getting a check with an automatic gratuity of 20% for a party of only 2. If there was a sign that would clearly state there is a automatic 20% gratuity I wouldn't have cared but it's a slap in the face for the residents of the neighborhood to be misled over a small dinner. Maybe a 20% gratuity would've been warranted if my steak was prepared properly. 10/10 wouldn't recommend. read more

Checked out this place with a friend for an early dinner. They offer a happy hour and some nice drink and meal options. Drinks were good. The place was not packed when we went around 4:30pm on a week day. The Restaurant atmosphere and decor were both nice. Don't you hate when someone is running late and you have to duck into a bar/restaurant to kill time? Well that's what happened to me and caused me to come into Cañave. But I'm glad I did! I stopped in for a drink and a small appetizer. The bartender handed me the happy hour menu and I had the perfect excuse to order a second drink since they were enticingly cheap! Warning: happy hour "bites" are larger than they seem. I ordered the nachos bites and a beer which came out to a very affordable 11 dollars. The nachos were much bigger in portion than I expected! They took a little bit on the longer side to come out but were worth it. The cocktails were awesome. I got the Las Palmas and Rum Punch which kicked ass. They both were potent and pleasant to drink. I had an early dinner here on a Sunday at 6pm. The open windows, space and music drew us in. Unfortunately, everything else was subpar. The service was very slow. Food and drinks were overpriced and not good. - Guacamole: I don't recommend. There were few chunks of avocado, tomato, onion etc but it was way too limey making it almost liquidy. The portion was size was very small. - Short Rib and Pork Shoulder tacos: Comes in 3. Both meats were extremely dry although I think I prefer the pork shoulder. The quality of food here is really good- especially for the area. It's a little more on the pricey side, but you can try going during happy hour which is apparently Tuesday-Friday 3-7pm (see photo). It was slightly salty but nothing crazy. The hanger steak, was flavorful and just the right portion. It was our first time coming here yesterday, and we actually loved our meal. Food was great. Drinks were great, even though it took longer to get them than expected and service was just okay. The ambiance in the outdoor section was great. We were saying how happy we were to have come there and would make it a regular spot for us. That was all undone when we got the bill. My husband is in the restaurant industry, and is quick to trust the bill is right... he gave his card without first looking it over, and when they brought us the credit card receipt to fill out and I saw him adding tip and signing, something about the total seemed very high. When I said that to him, he looked at the itemized bill and it took him a few times examining it to realize that it VERY quietly and in very small font above the total showed that there was a 20% gratuity added to the total... for a party of 2. This wasn't noted anywhere on the menu and our server certainly didn't let us know in any way shape or form. We are generous tippers and were going to tip 25% (even though as noted above, the service was just okay), so with the sneaky 20% already included, we were nearly hoodwinked into giving the equivalent of a 45% tip. Having auto gratuity for a party less than 6 isn't at all the norm, but if there had been any attempt to make us aware (by having this noted on the menu, circling/highlighting it on the receipt, the server letting us know themselves), this would be less of an issue. It was unforgivably deceitful. The tip line on the credit card receipt didn't say "additional tip," it just said "tip". The credit card receipt even had a VERY large "suggested gratuity" section on the bottom, with five tip suggestions ranging from 10% to 25%. And those suggested tip percentages were based on the total that already had the 20% auto gratuity included. My husband was furious, as was I - I don't write reviews often, but this was clearly intentional and anywhere that has practices like this shouldn't be in business. read more

I so badly wanted to like this place, but it ended up being a huge disappointment. To start, it is a spacious and beautifully decorated space. My friend and I sat down and there were only three other tables with people. The menu looked great. We ordered and beer and coffee to drink, and then the rest of our meal. We waited 15 minutes without our drinks. I had to ask our waiter twice for them... pretty ridiculous considering how few people were there. As for food, we shared the brussel sprouts and coquettes. Sprouts were good and croquettes were okay. For my main course I ordered the eggs Benedict. Everyone knows the centerpiece of eggs Benny is the poached eggs--well, mine were totally cooked through, hard boiled eggs, not poached. Extremely disappointing. Flavor was okay. We were not brought the sauces that every other table was, and when I asked, I got them, but only 2 of the 3. We then sat with our finished plates in front of us for almost 30 minutes without being checked on once. I celebrated my birthday there, we were a large party of more than a dozen guests and no one had a single complaint, our drinks were on point. They even surprised me with a slice of cake when I first arrived at the bar. Kudos to the bartender! The ambience at Cañave is cozy and quiet enough to have a conversation without racing your voice. Hanger Steak, Hamachi Crudo & surprisingly the "street corn" side dish with pork belly will be worth coming back for every time! For drinks, all were delicious. So I've been really waiting anxiously to try this new restaurant. I ended up going with my family to enjoy some dinner on a Saturday night. The ambiance is very inviting. They had the windows completely open so the air could come through. It gave it an outside kind of vibe. The staff was very attentive up until it when it got a bit busy. One of the biggest cons was the wait for our food. There really wasn't much people in the restaurant for us to wait almost an hour for our entrees. The excuse that we were given was that it takes a long time to prepare the chicken. When it finally came out the food was delicious. For appetizers we had the guacamole with chips and the platano croquettes. Both was delishious. We had the pork tacos and the skirt steak. We also had the corn and pork belly for a side and a order of rice and beans. Unfortunately the serving size was very small. Only two tacos for the price was crazy. I would even compare it to a large tapas instead of an entree. We also had to have chicken which really wasn't too good to be honest. All in all this place really has potential. The food was pretty much spot-on and delicious but the cons were the price the serving size and the unfortunate long wait. Would I try this place again? Sure but only with my wife alone. read more

After a long walk in Ft Tryon Park, we spied Cañave. There were drink specials and appetizers available as listed on a sidewalk chalkboard easel. The ladies behind the counter were wearing masks and the restaurant was set up to encourage social distancing. A sign at the front notifies us that only two patrons would be allowed in at a time. We ordered sangrias, jalapeño margaritas, tacos, fries and a sprite for the kiddo. We crossed Broadway and ate in the park. The food was fresh and delicious and the drinks were remarkable. Came here on Saturday with my fiancé for brunch. The location is SO CUTE! Love the aesthetics. We had a couple drinks all of which were DELICIOUS. Props to the bartender. We both had the Mexican Benedict's which are pretty much little sopes, i thought the tortillas might be handmade not sure but they tasted like it. I asked for their homemade spicy hot sauce they brought out two great options, I used both. Will def be coming back and trying out the rest of their menu. This is my new favorite restaurant in Inwood. First of all, the decor is breath taking. I could sit at the bar all day just starting at the intricate details. Secondly, each and every bartender that I've encountered (Celesete, Josh, and Roberto) have made my husband and I feel like welcome confidants. I am not much of a cocktail person, as a matter of fact I'm a wine or whiskey on the rocks kind of gal. The bartenders have curated their cocktail menu in a way that I've found it virtually irresistible not to try one. I'm a huge fan of the Caribeña, 3 Pasitos, and It Was All a a Dream (which is a play on Motor Soñando for all my Dominicans). My husband loves the Fuego y Agua. Lastly, the food. OMG the food!!!! The food is freshly made - as a matter of fact, the kitchen is open to the rest of the restaurant so you can see that they make every individual order as it is put into the system. So far I've had the Hangar streak and the branzino. My husband has had the short rib tacos. So far we have loved every single dish we've had and can't wait to explore more dishes.
