Cabana is THE spot for Latin food in the area. It's definitely become our spot over the years. What will automatically grab your attention is the funky decor in cabana, the bright yellows and tribal masks really make cabana a cool place to take friends while also enjoying great food. One thing I have to ask, am i the only one who hates tostones yet loves maduros?! Tostones are so bland and dry, i don't get the hype! Tostones are a typical side at cabana and if you don't ask for an alternative you are stuck with them. I prefer sweet plantains so if you're like me, ask for them instead of those dry plastic like tostones. Stand out dishes at cabana & overall favorites: 1) La playa salad: grilled shrimp, avocado & scallops? I'm sold. I love this salad, all those goodies are served over greens with a great dressing. Everyone is always jealous when I order this because it looks so so good. 2) Pollo con Camarones: chicken with shrimp, so delicious. The presentation is also wonderful since they stack the juicy pieces of chicken topped with shrimp and a couple of tostones. The tostones in this dish are actually good since the juices give them a better texture. It's a huge portion, order this if you're super hungry. 3) Coco cabana vegetables or chicken: This dish is probably the best deal since you can order a lunch special for $13 dollars that comes with soup or salad. So many veggies in a curry sauce served with rice and beans. You can't just cant go wrong, plus you can feel semi-healthy while eating. Insider TIP: LOVE tres leches cake? We were seated 3:50 and received lunch menus along with the regular menus. We saw that lunch ended at 4 and knew what we wanted to eat immediately. The server took his sweet time to come take our order. It was 4:04 and he said lunch is over. Fine, so we changed our orders from the dinner menu. About 10 minutes later a party of 8 was seated next to us. They received regular menus, and asked their server for lunch menus. I assumed they weren't going to get them, but to my shock - they not only got the lunch menu, but was able to have their entire party order lunch specials. I was pretty pissed. I was also pretty sure it was because they spoke to their server in Spanish and were from the same background. So of course it makes perfect sense that a party of 8 (with gratuity automatically included) would have the cheaper meals, while the party of 2 pays more, and tip is not included. Also our server was very distracted and forgot the bf's beer. He hardly checked up on us. It wasn't even busy. I've had better service at Wendy's. He didn't bother going over the specials of the day, but was more than capable of telling the table next to us the specials. He did replace the dirty napkin that was on the table when we sat down though, so 1 star for that. Sure it's 1 incident of crappy service out of the 5-6 times we've been there, but that's all it takes to make sure I don't come back again. The sangria was great! After sipping it rather quickly on an empty stomach, I started to feel the old tingles in my knees- a sure fire way to tell i am on my way to a tipsy euphoria. The corona arrived and was actually a Coronita... this place is too good for regular sized coronas? When we were seated, they placed us at a tiny table sandwiched between two other tables. The nature of the conversation was awkward and inappropriate and having two tables surrounding me that can hear everything this fool was saying to me was mortifying... And im too nice to get up and leave*** I ordered the pork chops with yellow rice and black beans. Growing up, my mom used to fry pork chops on a regular basis and then one day some asshat told her it was unhealthy to FRY the pork chops. Tasting the juicy chops that had a nice crust on them was heavenly. It was like taking a bite of my past. Two juicy pork chops on my plate. I could only eat one (but you bet that 2nd pork chop tasted amazing the next day when my roommate moved out and I had the place to myself!). My rice was a little dry. No fault of the chef, my mom loves her rice like that whereas I prefer mine on the sticky side. The beans were great as well! We were asked if we wanted dessert but I couldnt stand another minute at the restaurant with my creepy, soon to be former, roommate. Cabana never disappoints. This place is always packed so make a reservation ahead of time! Most I've had to wait is 45 minutes which seems like a lot more time when you're hungry! The staff here is so lovely. Always making sure you are happy with your meal. I love the energy here. Come with your family, friends, on a date night. It's perfect for a lot of occasions! This place was quite busy and quite narrow. There was a small area for outdoor seating, approximately four tables. The waitress was pushy. She wouldn't help us decide if we wanted to order more than one paella (usually paella is made for more than one person). She tried to push us to order more so she could procure a larger tip. She also pushed the bill on to us and returned regularly to check on the bill. She didn't even stop once to ask us how our food was. We ordered the paella marinara. There were definitely large fresh pieces of mussels, clams, shrimp, calamari and scallops in this dish, but they were also definitely overcooked. The flavor was bland for paella, the only discernible flavor was "salty." The paella comes in a small pot, enough for two light eaters; it is a good sized portion. I didn't even finish my portion. The red sangria comes from boxed wine, and the fruit is added when you order the sangria pitcher. The fruit should be soaked in the sangria. It is $19/pitcher. 1st time. Very crowded on a Thursday night. Martini's were delish. Had two...a lemon drop martini and forgot the name of the 2nd one. It had my favorite liquor-Chambord. Jerk wings were extremely dark, appeared burnt (wasn't), but very tasty with an extremely thick sticky finger licking sauce. Liked the presentation of the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef in tomato sauce). Black beans surrounded the outer plate, with yellow rice in the middle and beef on top of the rice. The beef was full of flavor with visible pieces of green & red pepper and onions. The first time my friend & I ate here was about 25 or more years ago. The menu hasn't changed much & that's not a bad thing. We started with Tropical inspired Cocktails. My friend had a Mojito & I had a frozen Passion Fruit DaquirI followed by a Strawberry Mojito...all three were well made & generous on the rum. The quality & flavor of the food is consistent. We had the Tostones Rellenos with Ropa Vieja & the Arepas con Queso to start & they were amazing! We followed with the Tropicana Salad topped with grilled chicken & an exciting assortment of fresh fruit & Shrimp with Garlic Sauce, rice & beans. As a side, we ordered the Yuca Frita served with Corn & Onion Salsa. Again, all so delicious! We were so happy with everything, including the phenomenal service! My first visit here was in '97. The colors, texture, sound, food, drinks and service remain distinctly Cuban today in 2016. Consistency is not an accident over 20 years. Just the drinks alone are worth the trip. Mojitos and daiquiris are made with real sugar and fresh fruit. I love mango! The calamari is fresh and served with a smokey cream dip and a zesty salsa. Came here for lunch great little place for some authentic Spanish food. We ordered a couple of smaller platters which were very delicious and full of flavor for my main plate I ordered a churrasco which came with yellow rice and reds beans the steak it's not a huge portion but it was cooked exactly the way I ordered it it came topped with pickled red onions which gave that right amount of acid to the Steak topped with chimichuri perfect bite each time. I used to dine at Cabanas all the time...years ago, the food was good. I brought lots of friends and they all enjoyed the food as well... But I stopped going the day I was seated near the kitchen against the wall and a roach ran near me. Some people might not have been bothered by that, but it was disgusting so we left and I have never gone back. Yes I know it's a restaurant, it's bound to happen, but I don't need to see it. My father managed a restaurant for about a decade in the city so I'm sure he's seen much worse, but I don't like dining at restaurants with vermin in the kitchen; they didn't have health ratings easily assessable back in the day. I've been here a few times for dinner years back and finally again recently. I really enjoy the food and hospitality at Cabana. Our waitress, Paola was wonderful. Very sweet and attentive. I mentioned my seafood allergy and she warned me that everything was fried in the same oil. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to try majority of the menu. Anyways, I've always ordered the pollo al ajillo for dinner, essentially chicken breast in a delicious garlic sauce. It was very good each time, as well as the rice and beans that come with it. The churrasco (skirt steak) was so tender and juicy as well. Also, every time that I've eaten here, we shared the brownies with coconut ice cream dessert. The thing is huge! Three of us could barely finish it. So so so good. And then my cafe con leche - perfect end to an authentic Latin American meal. Others at the table ordered cappuccinos and they were also well made and beautifully presented. My only legitimate complaint about Cabana is the size and set up of the restaurant. It's relatively small and tables are placed very close together, making the atmosphere a bit loud. This is to be expected given the area but still... On my last visit, we ended up making friends with the two women sitting at the table next to us because we were in fact that close together (my aunt is overly friendly and decided to start a conversation). It was fine for us, we all got along nicely and ended up chatting away but I could see how some may find this situation annoying. Regardless, I do like Cabana a lot. Cabana is one of my favorite restaurants in Forest Hills. I've never had a disappointed meal at here. Quite frankly I don't know why I'm not here more often. The entrance is very narrow, leaving you little room to wait around for a table as customers enter and leave the restaurant and the waiters going back and forth. Kind of an awkward design if you ask me. If you are fortunate to be seated in the main dining area in the back, it does open up towards the back of the restaurant and is a lot more spacious. The atmosphere of Cabana is festive. People go there to have a good time and enjoy the food. It is great place to catch up with friends or even on a one on one date. There is music and the patrons happily chatting away - but not too loud that you cannot have a conversation or are straining to hear. Cabana is almost always busy, especially in the evening on the weekends. Expect a wait. They do not take reservations. I'm not going to lie. I am a creature of habit when it comes to the food I like at certain restaurants - I would keep ordering the same things over and over again. I'm a huge fan of the "Alitas Caribenas" as an appetizer, and the "Churrasco" and "Paella Valenciana" for the main courses. - Alitas Caribenas: For $10.95, each order comes with 8 pieces of deliciously spiced jerk chicken wings. These are finger lickin' good with a nice kick! - Churrasco: This is a must-order for me whenever I am here. So flavorful and just exquisite. The portion is very generous. They do tend to overcook the steak though, but at least it is still tender and still very enjoyable because it tastes so damn good. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the pickled red onions served on top. Comes with black beans and yellow rice on the side. The chimichurri sauce is subtle and a tad oily. - Paella Valenciana: This paella comes with shrimp, mussels, clams, chicken, and the all important chorizo. The chorizo is the only reason why I choose the paella valenciana instead of the paella marinera which has more seafood. Yum yum. The paella is served in a cast iron pot and the portion is HUMONGOUS (I'm talkin' 3+ servings)! Another great main course! The service is good. The servers are friendly and attentive. We ordered the shrimp salad and the sausage and grilled meats combo and that was more than enough for both of us. We had some leftovers to take over. OMG, talk about a food Orgasm. I have been to this place at least 3 times. The most recent was March 20. I had a great time with a big group. We had alot of Sangria, the definitely hit the spot. I ordered (i forgot the name) It was a chicken dish with vegatables with sort of mango or curry flavor. BTW..It is the first thing on the menu in the entree section. i really wanted to try the combo meat platter or the skirt steak but I was more in the mood for a lighter meal. The yellow rice and beans hit the spot as well, just enough not too much rice but enough. I can't recommend this place enough. I really wanted to like this place. I found it on Yelp and it had pretty good reviews so we decided to try it while we were in the area. I want to start by saying that the food was pretty good. My boyfriend ordered the seafood dish in a plum tomato and garlic sauce. It came with mussels, clams, shrimp, and a filet of salmon. Rice and beans came on the side. It was good and a big portion. I had the ropa Veija and it was delicious. It is shredded skirt steak with rice and beans, also a big portion. The drinks here are really bad. I can't remember the last time I've been to a restaurant that uses a margarita mix rather than making it fresh, per order. I tasted it and asked for something else. The server was really nice about it. He brought me the menu to choose something else and did not charge me for the margarita. I had then ordered a glass of cabernet and he came back and informed me they were out of it. I ordered a different glass of wine that I'm really not a fan of. My boyfriend ordered a drink with rum and he didn't like it either. It was too sweet and just didn't taste very good. So for this reason, I have to give them 3 stars. I think the food here has been pretty well covered in the nearly 500 other reviews. So... I'll try to stick to other information that might be of use. Two of us stopped in here on a Friday night about 10:00 after a concert at Forest Hills Stadium. Being as it was Friday and being as the concert crowd was spilling out, we weren't sure if the restaurant would be too crowded for us to get in. But the hostess found us seats waaayyyy at the end of what is a gently triangular-shaped bar. Which I mention because the location of our seats and the shape of the bar conspired to keep the bartender a minimum of six feet away from us. The restaurant is mildly noisy and being so far away, I couldn't easily ask all the food related questions that I had, which probably affected what we ended up ordering. Anyway... here is the relevent info: the two of us ordered a mixed appetizer plate, some yucca fries and the chiccarones de pollo platter. And it was far too much food for two people. I guess we thought "platter" meant "comes with rice and beans", or some such thing. Better to think of "platter" as "a platter of food for a group". I didn't really count, but I'd guess that it was eight chicken thighs. However many, it was a lot. (Good thing they were tasty.) And the appetizer plate itself was plenty big. We could have had that and the fries and been satisfied. The other unexpected occurrence was that their cocktail menu has no prices on it. I thought, "Did they give me the ladies menu from back in the 1950s?" I shouted over to the bartender, "Do you have a menu with prices?" And she shouted back "No. We do not". Then she laughed at me. So... strange. FYI, the drinks all run between $10 and $12. Take your chances on which amount you're going to be paying. Oh, and sangria does not even make an appearance on the menu. They have it, people were drinking it all around us. But I couldn't bring myself to engage in a shouted conversation about pitcher size, do they have red and white, what does it cost, etc. I settled for a couple of mojitos, which were nicely prepared. I come here a couple of times a year with my boyfriend to share the seafood paella (large portion for the both of us). We usually have two red sangrias (lovely), and the tres leches (delicious) with two cafe con leches (coffee-delish). In the end, we come out wobbling because we are so full. Our waitress/waiter is always friendly, and informative. If you are coming here to have a private conversation, this is not the place for you. I have been with my boyfriend for quite some time, so we can often eat in silence and give each other a look if we hear something funny, or completely crazy. When you dine here, you feel as if you are on the first date of others (seems that most people bring their first, second time dates here). The atmosphere is also very noisy. They do not accept reservations, walk in only. I got lucky last night and waited no more than 15 minutes for a table for the 3 of us. While we waited, we hung out by the bar and ordered a few drinks. Their mojitos are so good. If you unsure how to quench your thirst, their mojitos are the way to go. I've also tried their sangria, both red & white... sweet and refreshing. For dinner, I had ordered their special porkchop in this mango-pineapple glaze. ASK FOR EXTRA GLAZE, trust me! it's so damn good. My boyfriend ordered their skirt steak. In his words, it was "ah-mazing."...like butter, it just melted in your mouth. And our other friend had the special pollo y chorizo (without the chorizo), and she said it was delcious. The only negative I have is that our waitress was a little...slow. I had gone up to her earlier during the meal, asking for a birthday flan for our friend's birthday to come at the end of our entrees and it took her a while to bring it over to us... it may have just been miscommunication. Overall our experience was great and we'll definitely be back again. Hopefully next time we can sit outside at one of the tables along the sidewalk, which is perfect during the summer. I have been to Cabana twice now and all I can say is Wow this is good food! Best paella mariner I have ever had hands down and consistent every time. Their squid is cooked to perfection which I usually find over cooked and tough, not here! All the seafood is very flavorful and so is the rice, they got that broth right! As always this place never disappoints. The food is always really good. I had the special which was the salmon over black rice in a lobster sauce and it came with 2 empanadas. And my date had the skirt steak with shrimp and plantains. Both entrees were great. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria ethic was good but could have been a bit better. Didn't seem to have that much alcohol in it, almost as if they digit to put a shot of liquor in it. I am leaving it a 4* only b/c of an exchange that happened that we were unaware of at the time. So we had a server who although was super nice never introduced herself, so I didn't know her name and at one point she came over just to say I hope you're enjoying everything, and we said we were, but unbeknownst to us she was ending her shift, so the next thing I know we had this new server. When I asked where did or server go he said she got off at 10p. Well why the hell she didn't say so and introduce the new server?! I have never had this happen here, however I do know at other restaurants, that's protocol when you're ending your shift to let your guests know and say who is taking over. And the new server never introduced himself. So never got either of their names from them. Every time I come here the servers are always nice and they always introduce themselves. So this was not the norm from my experiences. Not a big deal, however I think it's something that should be addressed. If you don't care about knowing your server then, you're good. As for me being in the 'service' industry, is nice to know who is taking care of you. And I like to call them by name and not say excuse me or snap my fingers or hiss at them like many people do b/c I think that's rude. Usually I'll ask for their name if I didn't get it but I didn't have the chance to unfortunately. Other than that this place is my go to spot. I really like it here. read more

Large portions, great tasting food. Ordered the salmon special which had calamari ink rice. The skirt steak was HUGE. Their tropical salad was super yummy with lots of sweet fruits and lettuce. White sangria was good, too bad I may be allergic to the white wine they use. read more

I came here with a friend on a weeknight and it was packed! Fortunately we got a table right away, squeezing in tightly with our neighbor diners. The staff were really friendly, and the waiter event tried to explain to me what a Paella Valenciana was - even though I knew very well what I it was. Maybe I didn't say it Spanish enough! Anyway, we order a pitcher of Sangria, I had the Paella, and my friend ordered a appetizer sampler so we shared the whole thing. There was a lot of Paella but I was determined to eat the whole thing by the time I got to my 3rd refill of Sangria. Very ambitious, but we had time. The paella was pretty amazing, it could use an extra shrimp or two but it was well seasoned and the seafood was fresh. The chicken and chorizo wasn't dried or mushed, it was just right. The rice was just incredible because it was cooked perfectly. I also sampled the sampler (no pun intended). The empanada was better than I expected (minus the grease), I did not expect the spice, but it was real good. I was also eye-ing the pork chops that the couple next to us got, they were huge and I want some! Next time! The only disappointing thing was that, when the waiter gave me the dessert menu and there was only 4 items. I wanted to get the flan to go and guess what!? OUT OF FLAN! How can you be out of flan when you only have 4 desserts? That made me a sad panda (uh no pun intended there). Great food, good service, PRICEY - but worth the meal. read more

My cousin introduced me to this place back in December. We initially sat at the bar and got a drink. Then eventually we went to the back to be seated and order. I ended up ordering the meal with steak, shrimp, plaintains and yellow rice with bean sauce. All I can say is WOW. That was my first having Cuban food and it certainly won't be my last. I'm actually trying to see if I could go there with my friend over the weekend. The display of the food is beautiful. The food is very fulfilling. Although I couldn't finish it that night, I made sure that I finished it the next day -- I'm drooling just thinking about it lol. And the price seemed to be reasonable as well.
