From the warm and attentive but not overbearing service to the details in the food like the sea salt on butter to the uniform and perfectly cooked steak cubes in the french onion soup, I can see what makes this a Portland top pick for seafood ...and for those like me who are allergic to shellfish (seafood reviewed by my dining ppls), I had plenty of options and never felt awkward thru the dining experience. One of the best places in Portland to get a great fish dish! I took my German friends here with my father and we got the salmon and sol dishes. Both were fantastic! The sol had great flavor with leeks and lobster mash, some padrons to top it off and a little salsa around the edges. I would definitely order the entree again. All of the dishes were piping hot and the service was great. I highly recommend this place to any fish eating lover out there. We ordered three different desserts, the handmade ice cream swirl (you can taste the banana ) the chocolate pot le creme, and the tangerine chiffon cake. All three were absolutely scrumptious! Still loving it here. Just adding a few more pics from dinner last night. Ling cod, cooked perfectly. Lamb pasta very delicious and duck confit with a plate almost licked clean (we can eat!) I am not always a bread n butter lover just because it fills me up, but this butter is so yummy I can't resist. Lots of crunchy salt in it - mmm. We splurged and had espresso / sambuca for dessert. Didn't really need it after a cocktail and wine but man that is my favorite way to end a delicious meal. I feel so lucky to have this place within walking distance - we do treat it as a special occasion because we tend to plunk down a lot of $ when we go but you could get a fine meal and a glass of wine and not totally break the bank too! read more

We came here for dinner because the yelp reviews were great, they did not disappoint! We made reservations online since it looked to be on the smaller side, it was and we were seated right away! The drinks and food we're all great! We ordered the old fashioned with tangerine I believe and it came out, just the right amount of flavors mixed together. For dinner we got the cioppino and marlin both had exquisite flavors from the veggies to the delicious buttery cream sauce that topped the cioppino. For dessert we could not turn down the house made chocolate ice cream sandwiches with banana ice cream! I understand the menu changes on the regular but I would think it hard to believe they could do any wrong :) also, a shout out to our waitress Jill, she was really on top of everything and had answers and suggestions without any hesitation! Cabezon is an all-around great restaurant for many reasons. Their dishes are well executed, the staff are friendly & knowledgeable, and they have a great wine list. I ordered the cioppino which does not skimp on the seafood. It was rich and delicious without being too heavy. I went with a group of seven and we ordered oysters, french fries, and mac n cheese as appetizers. I'm not even a huge fan of french fries, but these were so delicious! The oysters were tasty but smaller than the ones I'm used to getting in Seattle. My friend orders the sea bass and it was definitely a highlight dish (although it seems as though they nail every dish on the menu). The only minor criticism I have would be the cocktails. You can find much better cocktail options at other restaurants in Portland. It seems going with a nice glass of wine would be the better option. Wonderful little place. They originally opened as a Seafood Market and Restaurant. At some point they switched the market portion to bar seating, which I think was a great idea. The last time I went in I sat at the bar and had a very nice conversation with one of the owners. You can really tell they are putting their blood sweat in tears in to this place. We stopped by on a Friday night at 7:30, and the place was half-filled. By the time we left, it was starting to get packed. It is a little outside of the downtown area, but it is a great place if you are looking for some good seafood. We got: Mussels with chorizo, beans, fries and aioli. This was a great way to start the meal: the fries were nice and crispy, and the chorizo and bean broth had a little kick. I wish the dish had more mussels. Bouillabaisse: this also had some spice. All of the various fish and shellfish were cooked nicely. Halibut cheeks: this dish was good, although the portion was pretty small. Overall, the quality of the food was great, if on the smaller side. The appetizer, two entrees and a couple of drinks came out to $75 (gotta love not having to pay tax in Portland). Started with the basil wrapped shrimp appetizer which was unique in presentation and flavor. I described it as a cacophony of flavors and was perfectly prepared. The shrimp were wrapped in philo which was something I never would have thought to be combined with grilled shrimp. Followed that up with the steelhead main course which was served on a bed of shiitake mushrooms, roasted cashews, chow chow and sweet peppers! It was phenomenal and the steelhead was prepared to perfection. The meal was accompanied by a Chateau St Michelle Sauvignon Blanc and was upgraded to a Hogue Cellers Sauv when the second glass was short poured. Service, food and ambience was all top notch. After our table was not ready 30 minutes after our reservation time, and I asked when the table would be ready (all of our group have small children, and had babysitters that we had to get home to by a specific time), the owner basically said she didn't know and that I was being aggressive by asking her. I had over a dozen people witness the interaction (my own group, +4 or five ladies that were sitting at the bar, also waiting for their reservation that was over 45 minutes delayed) and checked in with all to see if I had somehow been rude without realizing it. Every single person said that I had just been very calm and asked when the table would be ready. I took mi Madre here on a date. I loved the idea of fresh local fishies and a menu which changed everyday based on what was the most fresh. The food was clever, lots of mesquite grill use and flavors that played nicely together. The issue was the fish. It was obviously fresh and had a good flavor, but everything was overcooked. I asked to turn on the outside heater, one next to me had issues and staff tried to fix it , unsuccessfully. However they eventually switched it to a working one and that heat felt great! I ordered a mojito even though it wasn't on the menu and I received one of the best mojitos (and I am very picky about it). For an appetizer I tried blinis with fresh caviar, they were small, delicious and fun to eat. After a day of shopping, we drove to Cabezon in the Hollywood District on a whim without any reservations, easily parking in a nearby residential neighborhood. We were warmly greeted and shown to a pillow-comfy window seat inside with air-conditioning. Yay! (Not sure how those who dined on the sidewalk enjoyed eating under the sun with traffic dust, but hey, as long as they enjoyed it.) We were absolutely WOWED by the special Salmon with cucumber drizzled, I believe, in aioli and the Salade de Fruits de Mer. The dishes were so light and flavorful. The Fruits de Mer had the kind of chewiness and texture that a gummy bear lover enjoys. Next, came the Grilled Pork chop with a sweet corn cake and the Cioppino. The chop was moist with a tasty glaze. My husband was so impressed with the sweet corn cake and its jalapeno kick, he declared the corn cake the winner of all the foods we ate in Oregon thus far. My Cioppino was served piping hot (the way hot foods should be), and I first enjoyed it like a soup, later treating it like a dip for the fibrous bread that comes with the meal. The shrimp, fish, Dungeness crab, Manila clams, mussels and calamari were cooked perfectly and not overdone. The Cioppino was not the conventional stew-like consistency that I am used to, but I enjoyed it, nevertheless. We did not plan on dessert, but when the meal is this good, I say DO IT. Housemade huckleberry ice cream with sugar cookies is just too good to resist. I'd like to add that the service was extremely friendly and I appreciated that a bottle of chilled water is left at the table. I wanted seafood for by birthday & when I googled it; this place had the best reviews & their menu sounded delish. Their prices are definitely on the spendy end of the spectrum (over $300 for 6 people with drinks & desserts). Everyone's entrées were absolutely delicious. Our server was personable & funny. The bread they gave for free was quite tasty & the wine I ordered with my meal was soooo tasty! My only complaint was the whiskey ice cream was absolutely terrible but I also hate whiskey & should've asked how strong the whiskey flavor was before ordering; nothing against the restaurant, just a poor personal choice. read more

looks like a seasonal menu - that changes all the time. Had great food and variety of seafood. I am relctant to comment on what I ate because if you go the menu will likely be different. However, the plate was definitely served with the thought of "you eat with your eyes first"... very creative and tasty flavor combinations, and FABULOUS service. As you approach this restaurant keep an eye out for parking... narrow streets make this a bit tricky but definitely worth the adventure. Took way too long to come try this place. I have an issue going to restaurant not really knowing what is on the menu since they change it daily. If you look at my profile you know I'm a picky eater. So I called the night before and still not knowing the exact menu for the next night we decided to take the chance. We had a reservation and they were very nice and offered a corner table if we waited a few minutes and it was a great table for the evening. First we were surprised that in June they had no salmon or halibut on the menu. Two of the three of us loved our dishes. The third person just realized he is not a fan of swordfish in general so poor ordering. Desserts were good but didn't wow us and not memorable. SO GOOD. My parents were visiting this week and we always go out for a nice dinner their last night in town. We picked Cabezon because we had been here a few years ago and keep meaning to come back. It's not a huge restaurant, but it's comfortable. The decorations are all abstract or fish related, so it's got a clean finish without being distracting. Our server's name is Norman, and he clearly knew what he was doing. It's not often that we get such top notch service from a server in Portland, frankly, so Norman's capability and professionalism was a very pleasant surprise. We did call ahead to put our names down, but it was a Tuesday night so there was some room for us anyhow. The place filled up a bit as we were there, as well. The food was amazing. We ordered a cheese board and a beet tart for appetizers; both were really well done and beautifully presented. My parents ordered the lamb and the petrale sole, and my husband and I ordered the cioppino and the monk fish. Everyone's plates were colorful and organized well, and each of the dishes were put together in a fantastic balance of tastes. I ordered the monk fish, which isn't a strongly flavored fish, but it didn't get lost in the rest of the ingredients on the plate. In fact, I don't think it could have been cooked better; it was nice and crisp on top but the inside was still flaky without being over cooked. My husband's cioppino was absolutely delicious; we'll be back just for that. I don't know if kids will have a great time at this restaurant. I don't think there was a kids menu, and unless they have more refined palates it just doesn't seem like the place for them. Picky eaters also might want to avoid it, only because they use a lot of ingredients that might not be familiar to someone who is very particular. I've been all over and gone to some of the best restaurants in my times in Portland, but my brother and I were completely BLOWN AWAY by Cabezon! The place itself was really cozy and cute - my brother fell in love with the bathroom he thought it was so cool. We also loved the jellyfish lights over the bar. Great ambience. The wait staff was excellent! Pleasant and outgoing and very knowledgable about the menu. We ended up splitting a salad which was amazing - and it was a salad...! We also split the white shrimp appetizer - I don't think words could even define how amazing they were -- we were sucking on the tails and licking the plate. For dinner, bro had the lamb which he drooled throughout. I had the Cioppino which was delicious! Ok, dessert, how can I even begin with this. I had the chocolate pot de creme - HEAVEN in my mouth! I can't even explain how amazing this was! My brother had the mushroom cap cupcake - he's in love with mushrooms so put it in a dessert and he's got stars in his eyes.... Cabezon was our choice for a seafood meal while visiting Portland. We started with the marinated olives and French fries with aioli- both were very good, actually comments from my family were "the best fries they've ever had!" My husband and I were introduced to Cabezon by his sister and brother in law a few days ago. This meal was easily in my lifetime top 10. Maybe even 5! We went back the following night with friends who are not particularly foodies, but love good food. They both raved as much as we did. The menu is small, and let me tell you, everything on it has been developed to perfection. Their CioppIno is world class. Fabulous flavor with fennel and fennel pastisse. Excellent pork chop, and equally great sturgeon. When it seemed it couldn't get any better we had 2 desserts: chocolate pots de creme (the crack of desserts) and honey lavender crime brûlée. There are truly no words. Excellent service and ambiance. If this restaurant were in NY or SF there would easily be a months long waiting list. One of our stops for Portland Dining Month. We would have never gone here if they weren't participating in it. Cabezon definitely have created a fan out of my husband and I. The service was good and the diversity of menu was amazing! We had their Portland Dining Month special and the fish itself and the Cioppino was pretty delicious. The restaurant itself is comfortable and I was comfortable eating here with my infant. Totally baby friendly. However, there is no parking so you would have to spend the time to find parking in the neighborhood. It may take a while sometimes. So is the food and service worth it to try to find parking in the neighborhood? Yes definitely. Not sure why you would need a reservation for this place only to be sat next to a wall. As soon as we saw the table we requested the room with the beautiful jelly fish glass lights. The ambiance in the room was dark and quiet. We ended up sitting at a 4 top with comfortable chairs versus the wooden ones where they wanted to originally seat us. Much better. The cippino was alright. Honestly I have had better. Everything we ordered seemed to have some spice of either nutmeg or cinnamon.. Or a combo of both. It was like eating chai tea lattes. Kinda an over kill on the spices. I get its fall time and everyone is so excited for the spices but just too much for me really. The pate seemed tasty but the crustini was so overwhelming with spice could not really taste the pate. We ordered 4 oysters. 3 came mini size and one normal. Not sure why we pay $3 for each. Size was lacking. Then we had to figure out who would luck out and get the big one... Service was blah. Seemed like in a constant panic. Ordered a half dozen Netarts and Torte (?) oysters on half shell. They were good, the Netarts are medium in size, creamy and briny, whereas the Torte are smaller and has a cucumber-like clean finish. I concur with some reviews that they could have done a better job in shucking - a couple small chips of broken shell from the rim found their ways to the oysters; not a big deal but it's something to improve on. For dinner, I ordered the the black cod with wild mushroom and polenta in a vinaigrette sauce. The black cod was fresh -- firm with a crispy skin; mushroom was flavorful, and the sauce definitely complemented well with all the ingredients. My wife had the grilled walleye with season vegetables in a herb aioli. This one is a winner. The walleye was flaky and delicious. I ended up stealing bites from hers! Wish I get another chance to try other items on the menu; maybe next time when we are in PDX... read more

My husband and I went to Cabezon last weekend for his birthday. We live in walking distance so parking is not a problem. We haven't been out to a nice restaurant since Covid so this was a real treat. The food was amazing and the service was 5 star!! I'm glad we made reservations as the place was packed. So nice to see they have survived through the Pandemic. Drinks and dessert was top notch! Such an amazing meal! They really know cooking here. I loved my phyllo wrapped shrimp with glass noodles. Others in our party loved the butternut squash soup, the mussels, and the bass. The green salad was beautiful and delicious. A special treat was the meal for my son, a vegetarian. He asked the waitress if there was anything for a vegetarian and she said the chef will always create something. He was blown away by the result, so beautiful and delicious! My husband and I were in town for the weekend and made a last minute reservation through OpenTable. Unfortunately when we got to the restaurant they didn't seem to have our reservation on their list. A little bit of confusion was worked out and they were able to seat us at a two-top booth by the window. Admittedly I could definitely see some diners not liking the small booth they sat us at but we found it cozy and liked the little extra privacy that it afforded. After getting our Manhattan cocktails (excellent!), we started our meal with the scallop appetizer special and the cheese plate. I wouldn't say the cheese plate was over the top but it was very good. My "dislike" was the truffle cheese but that's more of my own flavor preference as opposed to it being a bad cheese (I'm not a huge truffle fan). On the other hand, the scallop appetizer was DELISH! I don't really like scallops as I don't typically like the texture in my mouth but if scallops were always like the ones here I would eat them all the time - great texture and flavor! We rounded out the meal by sharing the cioppino which was jam packed with fish. The broth was also really great and I enjoyed sopping it up with the crusty bread! The service felt a little rushed at first, which may or may not have had something to do with the reservation snafu, but seemed to "calm down" as the evening went on.
