I am trying to get over my crushed expectations in order to provide an objective review of my visit to Cabos Bob's. I had high hopes for some authentic fish tacos and with such high praise on Yelp, I decided to make a run. You can imagine my disappointment as I pulled into a newer shopping mall and found Cabos Bobs sitting behind a Starbucks - this is just your regular, run-of-the-mill Americanized and corporatized Mexican food. Now - if that is what you are in the mood for - I don't want to discourage you from giving Bob a try. I had a solid experience from the moment I walked in. The seating area was clean, the workers friendly and helpful. The hot food was hot and the cold food was cold. I ordered the taco trio and got to work trying to sample as much of the menu as I possibly could in one basket. You have a choice of four soft shells - I chose the three flavored ones. There is a choice of chicken, fish, beef, pork, and steak - I chose fish, beef, and pork. All of the usual toppings round out the offerings. All of the food was well-prepared if just a bit bland for what I was expecting. An unexpected highlight of the trip was the cane sugar sodas that are available on the fountain - strong, vibrant flavors like ginger ale, root beer, vanilla crème, and cola. The cola was particularly amazing - give it a try and you will realize how bad Coke and Pepsi taste as they have become mere commodities trying to drive price out of their recipes. Similar to the likes of Chipotle and Freebird's, Cabo Bob's is a build your own burrito style restaurant. I found this location during a recent trip to Austin and am glad I did. While you can always build your own burrito, you can also choose from a menu of 5-6 burritos to choose from. I tried my burrito on a smoked cheddar tortilla and it was a perfect compliment to the rest of my meal. We also had chips and queso on the side of our burritos, which was delicious The atmosphere is very chill and a great place for a quick lunch or casual dinner. I had heard enough and had to try it out for myself .. and I am in love. One, any restaurant that not only sells Dublin Dr Pepper, but goes to the point of putting it in a fountain machine, is awesome! Thank you Cabo Bob!! The choices of tortilla flavors is really nice and that they make them right in front of you is great too. All the meat and ingredients are fresh and look great. The beef fajita meat - wow! I wish I could cook fajita meat like that at home. The flavor is great and so rich. Mmmm.. I got the three taco order and was more than pleasantly filled. Not too much, not too little, juuust right. The chipotle hot sauce was my only disapointment, was spicy hot, but almost like Tabasco and not like a spicy pepper sauce. But alas, Cabo Bob won me over. One of my favorite spots in town. I love Cabo bobs. They make amazing make your own burritos and make the tortillas from scratch right in front of you! I always order the cilantro tomatillo burrito and go with the fried fish. Queso is extra but it goes really well with the fried fish . Found this place on a whim when I had an hour to kill before meeting up with some friends. I grabbed a quick bite here and was pleasantly surprised. With the influx of Chipotle clones, Cabo Bobs stands out. The fresh tortillas is what sets them apart--ever so slightly crispy and delightful. I had the fried fish tacos. I'm heaping another good review on the pile. Wife had three tacos and declared the Fish Tacos to be the best option of the three. I went with a surprisingly moist brisket burrito. Enjoyed every bite. Don't let the size fool you, it's about the same amount of food you get at Freebirds but it's not tightly packed and rolled like FB prefers to do. Hit up the Brisket & Queso burrito!! Ba-BAMM! The combination is a Slam dunk for the burrito world! But dont get too excited b/c the brisket isn't like Franklin's or La Barbeque.. What makes it Great is the sizeable portion of brisket, meat is tender not too fatty; more like slow cooked roast and the Queso isn't watered down nor makes a big mess...its Just the right consistency! Just passing through Austin and decided to stop at Cabo Bob's for the first time! I ordered a fish burrito. The cilantro tomatillo tortilla was spot on. I love how they prepare your tortillas. I definitely prefer their tortillas over Chipotle/Freebird's. I would rate the overall burrito over Chipotle's though but not Freebird's, only because I felt like my burrito was lacking a bit of umph. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying it out again though. What you need to know - the food better than Freebird's. What you won't like - the people, atmosphere and overall "attitude" of Freebird's is missing. You start by selecting a tortilla flavor - seconds later a ball of raw dough is placed on some sort of flattening device and your raw tortilla is placed on a rotating hot plate. A couple rotations and a flip and you're ready to fill it with smoked goodness. Smoked? Yes! If you look back in the kitchen you'll find 2 'Big Green Eggs' - ceramic/kamado ovens that slow cook the meats and don't allow for any moisture or flavor to escape. The rest of the process should be familiar although it looks like they use a cilantro/lime rice a la Chipotle and offer an assortment of sauces at the end. To drink you'll find "Dublin" Dr. Pepper (made w/ cane sugar) on tap which is only one of a very solid assortment of self serve beverages. The little ignorable aggravation is that because of the large tortilla cooker, the rest of the line is a bit cramped and certainly doesn't flow as well as other burrito joints. read more

Ehhh... This place was just okay. I was going to go to Freebirds, but according to other yelpers, Cabo Bob's is so much better so I took their advice and came here. When I showed up just before noon, the line was super long, but the employees were very efficient. The line moved quickly. I was impressed to see that they make their tortillas in house and they press them when you order. I got a chicken burrito bowl. The ingredients were fresh but bland. The guacamole is just crushed avocados-no tomatoes, onions, cilantro or spices added. I love burritos and was excited to try something we don't have back home, but I think I'll stick with my tried and true Chipotle. read more

Was recommended shortly after w moved to Austin and we have been back a few times already! Whoever wrote chipotle on steroids didn't miss. My husband got the burrito and the portion was huge. And everything about it was delicious - the steak was juicy and flavorful and he was able to mix his burrito flavors which is awesome I got the crispy fish tacos (2) and chicken taco (1). I could barely finish my meal because they give you so much. Not complaining because every bite was just as good as the one before. Needless to say it is one of our new favorite Austin spots. Holy burrito Batman! I had the #4 fish burrito on the cilantro tomatillo tortilla and it could have easily fed 3 people. This is the kinda food that you just can't stop eating because it's so good. I added white rice, black beans, onions, green peppers, they put on 5 pieces of fried fish, salsa, cheese and sour cream. I'm drooling just thinking back to it again. The setup reminds me of Chipotle, in that you select your burrito, salad or bowl choice, and then decide what you want to load it with (with the options presented before you). Plain and simple, this place is yummy! No need for a fancy review. Just go try this place. Rule of thumb: Go for anything with fish in it! I've had the fish tacos and a fish burrito. Both of them are pretty filling and taste pretty good. The Smokey Cheddar tortilla seemed pretty legit. This is my favorite burrito place of all time. They just do it right. Tortillas are prepared per order and they use a pool of "Big Green Egg" smokers to cook their meats. We wasted 30 minutes in line tonight behind 5 or so other parties. We had to leave seeing that we were still 10-20 minutes from getting food. The issue seems to be that to-go orders take precedence over people in line. What is Cabo Bob's? Now I finally know. My co-worker recommended this place, quite a few times actually...and I never really believed him or ever gave this place a thought. Why? I have no idea, all taco suggestions should be welcomed with open arms and an open mind. Is it like a Chipotle/Qdoba/Freebird? Some would say the strategy is a little, yes. BUT THE FOOD ISN'T. Buttermilk flour tortilla - yummers! And that isn't your only option for tortilla. I've had the fish tacos and the chicken tacos. Both delicious. Tasty. Savory. Warm. Taco-licious. Even though the restaurant was fairly crowded, it was easy to find a place to sit. - Service: The counter ordering was not as fast as I expected, but I appreciated that each person was willing to accommodate special requests and answer any questions about the food. - Food/Drinks: I made my own bowl with chicken, brown rice, and black beans with a variety of toppings. The tortillas are cooked fresh to order. They happily accommodate my request to have a cilantro tomatillo tortilla on the side. All the food was fresh and delicious. I much preferred it to any other burrito chains. They served a variety of bottled and fountain drinks. Only complaint is the only non-diet darker soda tasted like it was not working properly so we had to grab a diet Coke instead. - Value: The food is high quality and delicious and the portions are large. Seriously, I don't know why anyone goes to chipotle, qdoba, or any of those fakers when you have Cabo bobs. It simply smashes all of them. They make your tortilla fresh and to order!! You can choose from a multitude of flavors or even combine some. They put it on the press as dough and 1min later, you have a hot fresh flour tortilla. Love their toppings as well, do yourself a favor and get the fish + queso drizzled on top. If you're a real pro, you get the tacos instead of the burrito. Tacos come out to be larger and you get to try multiple fillings. Would stay away from the nachos though, not worth it compared to the burrito/taco. read more

I ordered some nachos with steak, queso and whole pinto beans. The steak was so so kinda chewy. Queso was runny and not thick. The beans had no salt. I didn't care for the ancho hot sauce. The best thing was the thickness of the nacho chip. It held up with all the toppings and did not get soggy. For the price you can't beat it. It's also filling and I didn't try all of the other options that were available for toppings but it's a good mixture of items. I will go again and try the burrito. Wow, this place is good! I've been remiss in not mentioning how much I like this place after having had a couple of meals here a month or two ago. Some of the most flavorful burritos and tacos I've had in this state, almost enough to give Torchy's a run for their money. If there's any nitpicks I have, it's that a) the different flavored tortillas are more a gimmick than anything else as they don't alter the flavor much if at all, and b) it's CROWDED in here during lunch, but that's evidence that they know how to make good food. This place gets a 4 'CTJ Scale' as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing on after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good.
