Sketchy bathrooms were either locked or broken.. toilet paper holders were broken although it didn't smell and the floor were clean. This definitely needs an upgrade in the Woman's bathroom. Apparently they found another use for duct tape because there were no locks on the door so they covered the sharp edges and holes with duct tape. Rest area was pretty full. This is about 3:30pm on a Tuesday

Seating area. Good for those 100 plus days!

*** Pitstop Review (Cactus City) *** This is like the armpit of rest stops! I'm glad it's here, but come'on Caltrans, PLEASE repair this place!!! The door locks on 2 of 3 stalls are broken, and what's up with the toilets??? Is this some kind of joke that someone mounted the toilets extra high? I haven't NOT touch the floor while taking a crap since I was like 8 years old, WTF??? Caltrans, stop eating the donuts and pretend to work on this "imaginary" projects I see signs along the freeway for with NO workers ever present! These are really small things that go a long way :-) Here's what liked... * It's the only rest stop in the middle of the desert. Here's what I didn't like... * Stalls have broken locks. * Restroom are dirty and smelly. * Small lot with limited parking spaces.

Not the cleanest bathrooms but they will do when you are in the middle of nowhere and need to take a leak

It details the rock formations and the wildlife that can be expected while hiking. Within the visitor's center is a gift shop with gorgeous Joshua Tree Nat'l Park-inspired clothing and products. I recommend purchasing merch here since a portion of proceeds go back to the parks. The souvenirs are also much more affordable than privately-owned gift shops nearby. I bought a pin ($7) and a Travel Stamp sticker ($3.99). The office staff are also very knowledgeable about the area. The young man I spoke to highlighted the areas I asked about - see photo for highlighted map. I wanted short 1-mile hikes along with Heart Rock & Arch Rock. 5/5 stars for service! The restrooms inside are clean and there are also portapotties in the parking lot with outdoor sinks available. Their parking lot is small, but there's plenty of street parking. The entrance to the national park is really close by as well.

It is the one fronting the West entrance to the Park, which is the more popular of the two. It is located before having to pay the park entrance fee. It was manned by two friendly, quite busy volunteer rangers, answering any questions about your visit. We didn't have time to visit the park itself, so took the opportunity to learn a bit more about the park from displays and presentations. As I learned, it is crowded inside (shoulder to shoulder). There is a dedicated parking lot, along with street parking, and a small gift shop. My wife's mom ended up buying a tote bag (or two) to take back home. We didn't get to go inside the park this time, but was able to see plenty of Joshua trees real close, which are only endemic to this area.

The historic Villa Royale has been on our list ever since we visited their incredible on‑site tapas restaurant, Del Rey, for our anniversary last year. Finally staying here felt like a full‑circle moment. The staff made our celebration feel truly special and delivered such thoughtful, high‑quality service throughout our stay. Villa Royale is the ideal adults‑only getaway -- intimate, stylish, and designed for slowing down and savoring the moment. They offer a lovely morning coffee service, breakfast, craft cocktails, and plenty of amenities to enjoy at your own pace. We cannot wait to return to this luxurious, romantic escape.

The 2nd time we stayed here was in the winter. It was a cozy, much smaller room. The pouring rain brought out the best feature. A cannonball like fireplace which radiated the warmth of your best dreams. Texted the staff requesting it be turned on. Ah, it kept us warm all night long. So peaceful & cozy. We slept deeply & soundly. The beds in both rooms were A+. The complimentary breakfast included fresh berries, granola, bagels & other selections such as hard boiled eggs, lox & juices. We ordered food one afternoon from the onsite pool menu for our friends who visited for a couple hours. The staff set up a lovely table spread in the breakfast lounge patio. It came from the restaurant on site "Del Rey." Hummus with grilled pita & veggies. Also the veggie ice bucket & 2 salads. There's Mimosas in the evening. Also "freshly baked cookies from 8-10 pm." They were oatmeal chocolate chip which the cookie monster in me happily indulged in, though not every night. Unfortunately there were a couple safety issues in the smaller room's bathroom. As a cautionary tale, beware. One was the added wooden shelf above the toilet in the smaller room. My boyfriend who is on the taller side bumped his head into it the first day. Hard enough to make a laceration of about 1 cm. bleed. Second the window was sealed shut. Looks like someone had tried very hard to open it in the past because one of the slats was broken. At least the bedroom French door windows opened onto the patio. There were 3 pools. What made me happy is there are sun protection lotions provided. Along with complimentary water. The main pool was heated & open until midnight. The 2 smaller ones were referred to as "cold plunge pools." Seeing dog people here, as a former dog owner I would only bring my dog here in the winter. The weather seems too hot & intolerable for dogs in the summer. To end on a cheery note, another great discovery was made. About a 15 minute leisurely stroll away are fantastic walking/bike paths next to a bridge/creek. Many locals up and about in the morning hours here. Being a fan of microwaves they were absent in the rooms. When I mentioned this concern to the staff they said if needed they would heat items up in their employee break room lounge microwave At least there were no insects! Truly impressive. The icing on the cake was being able to read The Desert Sun & New York Times newspapers daily. How relaxing & what a treat.
