Came here for lunch about a month ago. It's great value as far as lunch is concerned. I had the Tortellini alla Michaelangelo for $9.95. I was pleasantly surprised. It was lovely with a nice creamy white sauce. For texture they had some pancetta and peas to go along with the chicken and veal tortellini. Sodas are $2 which includes refills. The decor is old school and there's nothing wrong with that. I liked it. The service is great and attentive. I'd definitely come back. I gave it 3 stars because it didn't "wow" me but it's not supposed to. It's an old fashioned Italian restaurant that serves good hearty traditional Italian fare. Nothing wrong with that. This place is so good that it makes me want to punch my mom. So it's like "what?" It's kind of small in there. So small that the people in the corner overheard my big mouth talking about how we didn't need a reservation after all on a Sunday and I overheard them talking about what I said. While MV location is more spacious, with more room in between the tables and thus provides a bit more privacy for your party, this Burlingame location feels more casual and inviting, family-style. Everything was very nice during our dinner, some dishes more exceptional than others. Everything comes highly recommended: Vongole e Cozze in Guazzetto Mussels steamed in garlic, wine, fresh tomato and basil, $13.95 - truly exceptional! Freshest mussels in light tasteful broth - gotta have it! Good to the last drop, just ask for more bread (or they will offer it before you ask-:) Clam Chowder (Fridays and Saturdays only) $6.95 - tastes a bit different from the usual kind; Saltimbocca di Vitello Veal scallopini topped with prosciutto and sage in a wine demi glace sauce, $28.95 - very good; Costolette di Angello Grigliate Grilled rack of lamb, topped with garlic, rosemary and balsamic vinaigrette, $32.95 - take it in medium rare, so-o-o good! Zabaglione per Due Zabaglione for two, delicious Italian custard made with marsala wine, $14.95 - this is something short of spectacular, I never tried it before. Café Figaro is an intimate Italian family style restaurant, small yet elegant. We came in around 6pm and we were seated right away. Everyone that worked here was kind and very welcoming, however, the server was a tad bit slow and we were his only table, other than that, the food was great and we enjoyed our dining experience here. The calamari was lightly breaded with a zesty flavor and the rigatoni tossed in pesto sauce with shrimp was mouthwatering good! I opened a Yelp account in part because I wanted to review this restaurant. I am baffled by the good reviews for this place. I ate here a few months ago and had a veal dish I think. The meat was salty but okay but it was served with overcooked, bland vegetables and watery, BOXED mashed potatoes. It was so obviously artificial. For a $16 plate that is unacceptable. My boyfriend got a pasta dish that tasted fine but the portion was so small for the price. It was no where near gourmet so there was no reason for charging that much. Furthermore, the service was supremely awkward. The two women there obviously had beef with each other and couldn't seem to decide who was serving our table. There were three occupied tables so we were quickly seated. The ambiance probably plays better in the dim light of evening as the hot glare of noon was unsparing on the weathered walls. We ordered a fettucini with garlic sauce, sundried tomatos, shrimps and scallops and a rotelle in red sauce with sausage. The food was pretty solid considering the low prices. For casual dining, this place hits the right notes. We tabbed out at $29 with 25% tip. It wasn't that the service was spectacular, but the ticket was so low, it seemed silly to tip less. read more

I came here with a friend a couple of weeks ago and was surprised by how cozy and homey this place was. I had a nice mushroom risotto with artichoke hearts - very different. A little too much garlic, but it was forgiven for the creativity. I also had the a penne pasta with eggplant and sun-dried tomatoes - also very nice. I used to love this restaurant, maybe it has sold over the last 10 years. I didn't recognize anyone working in there last night (used to see the owner and the same waiters for 10+ years) and except for the bread dipping sauce, the food was just awful. Polenta and grilled Sicilian sausage is an all time favorite and trad'l Italian food. Figaro has taken some sort of weird license with it, added frozen reheated oily Asian veggies on the side instead of grilled Ripieni which I would have expected. They completely used some random sausage instead of cervelata which I would have expected, put some disgusting honey sauce on the side, and the polenta was thin, lifeless, just bad. So disappointing! I have never had a bad meal here. I have been going to Figaro's for years and find myself there at least once a month. Heck, I was just there tonight with a friend. When someone says, "I feel like Italian", I suggest Figaro's This quaint restaurant is small and the tables are close together. If you are claustrophobic then this place might not be for you. For me, from a family that is always up in your grill, close quarters is not a problem its actually preferable. The upside of being close to others is that you can see what they are eating and make your choice that way. The decor is simple and the atmosphere is intimate. It is a great place for a date or to grab a bite to eat with a friend. The staff is friendly and courteous. Tonght, the waitress was in training and made some mistakes. she forgot my minestrone and when I mentioned it she was embarrassed. I wasn't upset and could see her being directed by the owner. I cut her some slack....and heck, I got my soup so it was all good. As far as the food goes, I have worked my way down one side of the menu and up the other. I have never had a bad meal and can honestly say that this is one of the few restaurants that I find to be consistent. Some of my personal favorites inclue Tortellina alla Michelangelo and the lamb. OMG! Try the lamb. It not mutton like most restaurants pass of as lamb! Perhaps the only draw back to Figaro's is that parking in the neighborhood can be tight at times. The garlic dipping sauce that they serve along with the complimentary bread was a great way to start the meal. I ordered the linguine al pesto for my entree and it was dee-licious! Not one of those dishes where they short you on the pesto, this one was loaded with a rich pesto sauce - so, so good! The portion size was just right, and prices very reasonable compared to other Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. For dessert, we tried the bread pudding (because everyone said it was amazing). At the outside, it looks like one of those small neighborhood restaurants that serve incredibly good food but are relatively unknown or hard to locate. However, once you taste the food, you realize how gravely you were mistaken. We had the tortellini stuffed with chicken and veal in white sauce and the Ravioli with artichokes and saffron. The tortellini stuffing reminded me of the good old college days and was really quite disgusting -- unless you're a fan of Chef Boyardee ravioli, then my guess is you won't like it. The texture and the taste was just off. I did enjoy the little bits of pancetta in the sauce, but that's about it. The risotto was equally off as well - bland and just unappetizing. The portions are huge though so if you're in for that kind of stuff -- quantity over quality -- then this place will be okay. To top it all off, service was not good. It took us 15 minutes to get our bill! Uhm, hello? It has 10 tables max inside (all of which weren't occupied) and about 4 waiters, so you'd expect that they would actually have decent service. Plus one star for the yummy bread and the olive oil-basil-balsamic vinegar dip. When my entree failed, the bread basket came to the rescue. read more

A 4* restaurant should be better than this. Flavored olive oil they serve with bread is so strong with garlic, the table next to us asked what the "spice" was (it wasn't "flavored" with garlic - oil was so overbearing the garlic was actually spicy!). Chicken Parmesan: Over-cooked/tough chicken, served with mushy pasta. Chicken Ripieno (stuffed with herbs, ricotta, etc): wasn't overcooked but way too much garlic. 2 hours later, I can still taste it (or maybe it's left-over from the flavored olive oil served with the bread). I love the ambience (not fancy, but quaint and small). Service was good. Wine was good. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but we won't be returning. I've been to this place twice, and I love it there. The first time I went, I was just driving around with my wife (then-gf). Second time I brought two friends as well. I'm going to keep this review short, and say that their food is fantastic. I don't know of too many Italian spots that keep it really authentic. The service is great, and I can honestly say that this is one of the better places to eat, regardless of wherever you are. Unfortunately, I will be away for a while considering I'm now stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas... and I won't be able to come back until I get a vacation. Enjoy your time here, and relax. Very old school place. Id walked and driven by it tons of times and finally hit it up since an old co worker wanted Italian. Got the breaded veal cutlets that came with veggies and mashed potatoes. Veggies and potatoes were ok with the latter being a bit lukewarm. Cutlets were well friend and tasty. Bread and oil that come before are standard. Besides the ordering and a refill on the iced tea, service was pretty standard too. Going late there was only one other table and another was turned away after coming in after us. Not sure it's really a seek out type of place but if you're in the area and want Italian fare it's not a bad choice. read more

Bread wasn't so good, but the food was decent. Start with the bruschetta and polentas, which are well made, but nothing incredibly spectacular. Then I had the Pollo Rione which included mashed potatoes, veggies, and stuffed chicken breast. The chicken was slightly dry, but well seasoned. I just wish they gave 4x more veggies. I did really enjoy the wine. 2003 Cesari Amarone for a steal at $35/bottle. Didn't quite match with my meal, but it felt good to not pay 200% markup at a restaurant. We tried Cafe Figaro last weekend for the first time. The atmosphere reminded me of many of the small hosterias that are common to the Italian section of Boston near Quincy Market. They jam as many tables as possible in the place, throw down a checkered tablecloth and serve great pasta. I had the small Caesar to start (which I shared with my wife because it was so big), along with the evening's pasta special, linguine with seafood in a garlic and white wine broth. My wife had a light pasta primavera dish. We both enjoyed our meals and the attentive service that the wait staff provided. The iced tea was fresh brewed and delicious. We were running a 5K race the next morning, so we did not try any of the wine or desserts. I see that they have Zabaglione for two on the menu, so we will definitely be back to try it. Prices were reasonable. We managed to get out of here for less than $50. read more

Came here with my girlfriend for Valentine's Day, despite it being busy the food and service was great! The staff was friendly and tried their very best to accommodate us. A few things stuck to me giving it 4 stars. The space was a bit crowded because of this they weren't able to seat us on time of our reservation simply because they didn't have enough seating during such a busy night. There was however one table ready but whenever the door opened a gust of cold air would hit that general area. If the door was modified to swing the other way the table would be more enjoyable. read more
