    One of Vancouver's original HK-style restaurants, Cafe Gloucester sits somewhere between a cha chaan teng and a compact full-service Chinese restaurant, with a menu that flirts with lobster dishes and the occasional surf-and-turf crossover. Depending on the day and season, you might find a Sunday roast being carved, or, if it's earlier, a breakfast-to-lunch menu filled with HK fusion classics. Sadly, many dishes are called "good" when they really deserve the label "great." Staples for me include the bitter melon with beef over wide noodles, curry brisket, pork chop on rice, and Portuguese-style baked chicken rice -- all solid fan favourites. Prices are slightly higher than at comparable spots, but the cozy interior and friendly service make it worth the extra few dollars.

    Went there for lunch yesterday. 4 adults and 2 small kids 6 &4. Total cost including tips and tax $150.39 I think it's expensive and food not so good, but the place is packed. Either I have high standards or others in Vancouver has low standard. I ordered Hainanese Chicken on rice. $20.99. No taste! Bake pork chop on rice $19.99. Not my cup of tea. Bake spaghetti $19.99 was good. I'll order that if I go again. French fries were good. Crispy, I like! Frankly, I wouldn't go again my self but will tag along. Overall, not happy!

    circled the block more than once before lucking out with parking to meet up for a late night bite at cafe gloucester, located at 3338 cambie street. construction and permit only spots and no entry signs made it challenging. at 9:45 pm on a wednesday, the place was still humming, almost every table was full. so much for my no eating after 8:00 pm rule, but something about a hong kong café makes that rule easy to break. the clatter of dishes, the quick shuffle of servers, and the mix of conversations in english, cantonese, and mandarin made it feel like stepping into a little piece of hong kong tucked into cambie. menus here can be overwhelming, packed with all the signatures. food came out relatively fast. we had the bitter melon with sliced beef and rice noodles, which carried a slight wok hei and a touch of oiliness, though not much black bean sauce to tie it all together. the curry beef was tender and warming, served with a bowl of rice on the side. it leaned mild rather than spicy, more comfort than heat. servers were friendly and efficient, checking up on us and topping our tea often. and then came the ovaltine. simple, malty, and sweet, it anchored the meal and brought with it a wave of nostalgia, the smell, the kind of flavour that only hong kong cafés can deliver. it turned everything else on the table into comfort food, no matter the hour. parking might be a headache, but once you're seated, cafe gloucester does exactly what you hope for: late night warmth, unfussy plates, and a familiar taste of hong kong right on cambie.

    A HK style place to go to that is available in that area. Meter street parking available, can be challenging to find spots pending on day as it is a busy location. Resident parking limited with some are residential parking permit only. Always pretty busy from morning to evening. Went here for lunch with my family. Ambience is casual regular chairs or cushioned bench seating. We had the following - * Stewed Beef Brisket Rice Noodle in Soup * Satay Stewed Beef Instant Noodle in Soup * Stir Fried Shanghai Rice Cake * Baked Seafood on Rice All were good though did find the Stir Fried Shanghai Rice Cakes to be too salty and oily though. The waitress that helped us with our order was patient and informative of the menu.

    A true Hong Kong Style Restaurant! Well established in the Vancouver food scene for over a decade and still going strong! Order their fusion style western dishes such as Baked Pork Chop in Tomato Sauce over a bed of Fried Rice or their legendary Roast Prime Rib! Parking maybe an issue as they are located on the ever busy Cambie Street! Open till late ... call restaurant to confirm!!

    First time here! I've been wanting to eat at a HK cafe since it's been a while, and I crave the HK milk tea... My partner and I came on a Saturday during lunchtime, and it was pretty packed! Thankfully, we got seated right away as we were only 2 people. Service was very fast and efficient. We ordered, and the HK milk teas came out soon after. The HK milk tea was delicious! Tasted very authentic. The seafood baked rice was good too - though I wish the rice portion was bigger. The creamy sauce complemented the seafood well, and the rice had a great texture. The beef brisket fried noodles was divine... amazing sauce flavour, and nicely crispy noodles. I would have liked more vegetables, or a variety of veggies, but we made do with the 4 choy given. The beef brisket texture was tender and not too chewy. They gave a big portion of beef, which was nice!

    Some legit Hong Kong cafe type of food. One of my favorites. They have a lot of the classics which I enjoy. I had a hard time deciding since they had so much on their menu. I ended up with their roast pork rice dish and a hot Hong Kong coffee. The roast pork was a westernized demi-glazed roast pork with a side of diced carrots/corn kernel for your veggies and rice. The demi-glaze was a nicely made sauce that went well with the roast pork. However, the roast pork was such a small piece. I was expecting a bit of a bigger piece. The Hong Kong coffee was great though. I needed it so bad. Service was good. Server spoke English and Cantonese, so that was nice. Ambiance had a diner type of feel to it. It was fairly clean and had both tables and booths. The paper towel dispenser in the bathroom wasn't very responsive, so have a plan b if you can't get that working to dry your hands. But it better not be to not wash your hands at all. Wash your hands and be sanitary, you nasty!

    Came here with my partner and got the baked seafood rice and beef brisket chow mein. We both got hot Hong Kong milk teas, complementary with the dishes. The baked seafood rice was really good.. I can't remember what exactly was in it but there was an ample amount of shrimp and fish. The sauce was really delicious with the rice. Everything together was a party in my soft mouth. My only complaint is the dish is really small for what you're paying. The beef brisket chow mein was equally as delicious and saucey. I love eating the crispy edges! Perfectly crisped chow mein and LOTS of beef chunks. Service was really quick--we were seated and fed so fast. I want to come back to try more baked dishes!

    Gloucester Cafe is a Hong Kong Style Cafe located on Cambie St. in Vancouver. They've been around for many years and have an extensive selection of items on their menu. This was a late dinner for us. Everyone at the table was tired and hungry, so...photographing food that belonged to anyone other than myself? It just wasn't happening!  I ordered the E-Fu Noodles with Mushrooms & Oyster Sauce all to myself, and finished the entire plate! I have often wanted to order this dish in many places I've gone to, but it didn't seem to agree with whomever I was dining with. Too simple a dish is the general impression that I've gotten. More ingredients preferred. I was so happy to finally order this dish and enjoy the entire plate of it to myself. This was one of the better E-Fu Noodles with Mushrooms that I've had too.     I enjoy the black cod dishes here. Menus can be overwhelming but lots of options and there's something for everyone. Good service.

Once we sat down and were handed the full menu, though, I had a brief moment of panic. The menu is huuuge and varied, plus none of the items I had mentally planned on ordering were on there. We pivoted and ordered pork siu mai, congee, look fun noodles, and a few steamed buns (they're especially known for those). The congee, noodles, and siu mai were all fine--very standard, not particularly memorable. In fairness, they weren't what I came for in the first place, so that probably shaped my expectations. The real standouts were the pork asado siopao and the chicken deluxe (bola bola). Both have Filipino roots, and the siopao especially brought a comforting sense of familiarity--soft, fluffy, and filled with that sweet-savory pork that felt like home. Those alone made the visit worthwhile. They actually have quite a few other Filipino influenced items like hopia and puto which was surprising. Ironically, it was only after we left that I noticed the sign on the window highlighting their most popular items--exactly what first-timers should probably stick to. I had ordered a few pastries to go with the intention of trying them later... and then completely forgot about them, which I'm still a little sad about. Overall, it was a good visit with a clear lesson learned: go in with a game plan and order the hits. It's a beloved Vancouver institution for a reason, and I'd definitely recommend stopping by--just know it's cash only and do a little pre-order research so you can make the most of it. I'd give it more like a 3.5 vs a 4 star, but I'm already planning a redo focused purely on the classics.

She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level.     I have many Chinese friends in Vancouver, and my last visit to Kirin Richmond was in July 2024…read more This time, it was my birthday, and my friends insisted on treating me to Kirin Richmond once again. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.
