I waited until after the hype. I knew about this place since they opened, so of course I needed to try. See my pics. That's what I had. My commentary: Baked pork chop on rice was only OK/not bad. I've had better. Angel Cafe, Van Tea, and Cafe Gloucester come to mind. It needed more tomato sauce, more cheese, and the pork was not cripsy. Baked curry beef brisket on rice was not bad. I don't have a reference to this because it's the first time I've tried it. It was pretty decent overall. The brisket was very tender. Pineapple bun with a slice of heart attack. This was good. Nice crunchy topping, soft bun, served with an coronary artery hardener. If you like your 菠蘿油, this is for you. They come in different iterations, btw. Regular/original, red bean, and chocolate. I got a chocolate BLB to go. Other notes. Custard/egg tarts. This is the style I like. With the cookie crust pastry base. Good eggy flavour in the custard. Chocolate pineapple bun - there's chocolate filling in the middle. If they made this with a Fererro Rocher like filling, it would sell like hotcakes! I think I'll skip the baked rices next time. They were underwhelming. Going to go for the instant ramen! There are other baked goods. Wiener bun with cheese and a loaf of white bread to go, was what I got. Finally decided to go try this place last weekend when we were in the area. The restaurant is in an industrial area & quite small, so there was a bit of a wait to get seated. Food arrived pretty quickly though. We ordered 2 combos from their all day breakfast menu & added on some mini pineapple buns as they are somewhat famous for these buns. The food was decent, Hong Kong cafe style food. It was not bad, but also not particularly outstanding, save for the mini pineapple buns (these were really good!) What made our dining experience quite uncomfortable was actually the extremely strong smell of cleaning supplies / disinfectant in the restaurant. I ordered the curry brisket on rice ($19 and small portion) served on tin foil take out container. Ok, I can live with the tin foil container, but we had to ask twice where my rice dish was as other who came in after us go their dishes served. After a 50mins wait for my rice dish, no accountability or apologies. The curry rice was just ok so no need for me to come back for this dish. I will be coming back for the pineapple bun. The breakfast section offers better deals. There is a few parking spaces for the café in the business complex but make sure you parked in the right stall, or your car could be towed. It was a long drive as the location is a bit inconvenient, but so worth it. This is the best cha chaan teng we've gone to in Metro Vancouver, it felt like we were in Hong Kong. We went during the lunch rush, but only waited 2 minutes for a table. The cafe is spacious with lots of natural light. Service was excellent and the staff spoke Cantonese. You can submit your order by scanning the QR code or by waving down the server. Satay beef in instant noodles: so much flavour and they give you a packet of sesame oil on the side. This came with a hot drink, I had hot HK milk tea. Curry chicken fillet combo: this was their July special. The curry was so satisfying and the chicken was perfectly cooked and so juicy. It came with a drink, we paid $2 extra to make it iced. Egg tart: I was blown away by their egg tart. It's definitely baked in house daily, the crust was so fresh and the egg was warm and melted in my mouth. Real pineapple bun: they have a variety of pineapple buns. I would say it's a solid 3.5 star. Hong Kong style cafes are what we crave since we don't have alot in nyc so we've been hunting them down since we arrived in Vancouver. We were a party of 6 and came on a Friday morning. The restaurant was close to being full but they nicely asked a table of customers to move to another table so they can accommodate our big party (a very nostalgic and Hong Kong style move). We ordered a pan fried chicken in instant noodles, satay beef instant noodles, spam and macaroni in tomato soup, bbq pork and spaghetti and ginger sauce beef in vermicelli soup. Everything can be converted to a meal set for an additional $4 which includes toast, scrambled eggs and a hot drinks (additional $2 for cold drinks). You also need to add an additional $1.75-$2.75 if you want to replace your toast with a pineapple bun. I would say the highlight of this place is their bakery! Their pineapple bun was crispy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. My kids ordered the chocolate lava pineapple bun and it had a nice cocoa flavor to it. My husband tried their cocktail bun and was impressed how it had shredded coconuts in the filling which you can hardly find anymore. The pan fried chicken was juicy, tender, and had a nice sear. The satay beef was also very tender. However, both were very salty and although they used the instant noodle packages you can get from the supermarket which is normally more expensive, I feel it overall lacks the authentic cha Chan tend taste. The spam and macaroni was also disappointing. I was expecting it to be those rich tomato soup base from Hong Kong but instead, it was a little watered down Hong Kong style borscht. The macaroni was also a little over cooked. The major issue I had was their scrambled eggs. Despite it being drenched in butter, it still wasn't moist or fluffy. It was in fact a tad over cooked and the butter was too over powering. This restaurant is situated in a commercial complex and away from Richmond, hence they are able to charge such high prices as there's no competition nearby. There were also only a very limited parking spaces in front of the restaurant as majority of the parking spaces are reserved. Overall, although it's still miles better than what's available in nyc, as compared to other Hong Kong style cafes in the area that (like cha kee), I feel the food was subpar and overpriced. Came here cuz the hubs was craving some Hong Kong eats. This spot is tucked in an office building which was odd but comes with plenty of parking! The restaurant did smell very strongly of moth balls though which my kids absolutely could not stand. TLDR: Good but not as good as Cha Kee. This place will draw the inevitable comparison to Cha Kee, which in our opinion is the best HK Cafe outside of HK. This place is still better than Bay Area though. The main reason this isn't as good, is their eggs. My wife likes ordering the breakfast set, which comes with toast and runny eggs. it's what she used to have when she grew up in HK (when she had time to eat breakfast). It's not something that is done down here in Bay Area unfortunately. Here, the eggs aren't as runny and as fluffy. But the toast is still good. My wife ordered a pork chop noodle soup, using the Japanese version of the famous instant noodle. She thought it was pretty good, but not as authentic-tasting as Cha Kee. The pork was well fried, and tender. The noodles honestly tasted like any other instant noodle. It's a good thing I love instant noodle! I ordered the house-made BBQ pork rice. The pork was a little bit dry, but still had good flavor. Not as strong a flavor as I would get at the best BBQ pork place in the Bay Area though. I really wanted to taste more of the sweet glaze. The rice had some of the soy sauce flavor, but again, I wish there was a bit more sauce to seep throughout the rice. As it is, my wife enjoyed the rice, but she likes plain rice anyway. All in all, it's a good restaurant, that is still miles away better than anything in Bay Area. That's four stars right there. One strange thing about this place is the parking situation. Most of the parking lot seems to be reserved, and there is actually only a few places in the front for restaurant parking. I guess, for the overflow, you should park on the street? Ordered new item, Pineapple Puddling Buns at 9:13 AM, but were told they weren't available until 10 AM after checking in with staff as it has been 17 mins since our drinks were delivered. No one told we couldn't order the Pineapple Pudding Buns until 10am. Though with some confusion with staff (cancelling, order change and then added back the Pineapple Pudding Buns) at 9:47 AM the pineapple pudding buns were served cold/lukewarm and liquidy (pudding). Beverages were cold due to the long wait (30+ minutes). No apology or refill offered (we inquired for refill due to the long wait for the food but we were declined as they only offer refills during weekdays not weekend). We did not know this as we only come on weekends (we both work full-time M-F). We did not think this was big ask to just refill as our beverages was cold waiting for the food, which disappointed anyways. Nothing they did to recover us (multiple opportunities) to save us to return next time. Will never return. read more

We ordered the macaroni and ham soup and satay beef with instant noodle set meals. They were pretty good tasting. We substituted the toast with pineapple buns. Tried the pineapple bun with salted butter. It didn't taste fresh, not was it hot or warm. The crust fell apart upon picking up the bun. Generally not a good sign or quality bun when that happens. Kitchen staff are pretty slow and food takes forever to come out. The scrambled eggs weren't great. Prices are pretty expensive for what you get. Two meals was $40 for 2 people. Visited Ho Yuen Cafe and was delighted with the food that I ordered. Tried their buns of the month, which is their Kaya Toast and Pineapple Bun with Real pineapples. Kaya Toast was exceptional! The coconutty taste with a fat slab of butter was smooth paired with light and super soft bread, which made it a perfect combo. The pineapple bun with real pineapple was very unique as it was filled with pineapple chunks in cream mixture. The pineapple definitely makes it very refreshing. I don't believe anywhere offers this. Overall very solid place for egg tart and pineapple bun. They have pre packaged mini pineapple bun, good if you are in a rush. Pineapple buns are both pre packaged (room temperature) or you can order a warm one from the display case. Mini pineapple bun topping is the more crispy type, if you bite you won't clearly see your teeth mark. I prefer this type but I felt like the dough was not as soft as other places. Egg tart is cookie crust and $2 per piece. I like cookie crust over flaky crust, but I think the filling is not the no. 1 filling. However, I didn't eat it while it was hot so I will need to come back and give Ho Yuen a fair chance. If you *really* prefer cookie crust over flaky crust this is probably still best spot for it. Their chicken wings were pretty sad and disappointing. They were not drummettes nor wingettes, but HALVED wingettes battered and fried. They were so tiny and sad. I don't recall the number of pieces in total..maybe 6. So that's technically only 3 wingettes (1/2 wings) you get per $10 order. Taste was ok but just be prepared for what you get. A new cha chaan teng has recently opened in Richmond! I could never resist the Hong Kong style comfort food, so I'm super excited to try it out! Since this cafe is newly opened and it's a weekend, so I expected it would be busy. I went there right when they opened but turns out we were the only one there LOL. The place starts to get busy when it's around 10:00am, so to anyone who wants to avoid the crowd, get there before 10:00am! Satay beef instant noodles is my go-to breakfast when it comes cha chaan teng. I also substitute the toast that came with the meal set with a pineapple bun. The satay beef instant noodles was really good, probably one of the best I've had in Vancouver. It's super flavorful and I think the portion size was perfect for me. The pineapple bun is soft and theres a nice crunch on top. However the yuenyueng was just so so, the coffee was not strong enough and I think they added too much milk. We also ordered the luncheon meat tomato macaroni, I think it was fine, I much preferred the satay beef instant noodles. Last but not least we had the cookie egg tart, I mean how can you not get one when you are at a cha chaan teng? The egg tart was delicious, the cookie crust was buttery and flaky. I absolutely loved the filling, the egg flavor is so strong and it has the perfect texture. Overall I think the food here is ok, I think I still prefer Cha Kee (Aberdeen). Hong Kong hype? This place is located in the industrial area of Marpole (why tho? To concentrate on the office boys and girls within the surrounding commercial buildings? And also that's why closes at 4pm and Sundays are closed?!?). There are parkings available in the plaza parking lot but was confusing so parked on the streets instead. The interior is newly renovated; the decor and furnishings were pretty basic and straightforward. I would say I felt like I was in one of those typical western cafe for a small bite and coffee before I head up to the office more than in a Hong Kong cafe vibe. The menu was very limited (soft opening), but here were the food I ordered; 1. Homemade BBQ pork on rice with sunny side egg and vegetable. Okay guess they jumped on the bandwagon when the movie "God of Cookery" came out and offered their version of the "sorrowful rice"? Unfortunately, not available because no rice. What?!? A Chinese restaurant ran out of rice at 2pm? Most Asian households have enough rice to last for months... what happened? Plus it literally takes 15-25mins to cook a small batch of rice? 2. Egg tarts. They were decent with the butter crust, but I would say similiar ones at Saint Germaine are slightly better. 3. 1 original and 1 with butter pineapple buns. Light crisp outside and warm and fluffy inside, nice! I like the one with butter as always, the fused taste of the light sweetness of the bun and saltiness of the butter.. so good! 4. Chocolate pineapple bun with chocolate filling. It was okay, but was messy to eat. 5. Satay beef instant noodle soup meal set (comes with toast, scrambled eggs, drink). The soup wasn't hot enough, the beef could be more tender,too much corn starch added for the satay gravy and sauce was too sweet. Very classic style HK cafe instant noodle soup that's why the simple details make a huge difference. Correct me if I am wrong, the scrambled eggs are from premixed bulk? Personally Would prefer scrambled eggs not too runny to avoid possible food poisoning. 6. Luncheon meat with macaroni in tomato soup meal set (comes with toast, scrambled eggs, drink). Once again not hot and same thing about the scrambled eggs. Otherwise it's okay and does have room for improvement. Overall, the pineapple buns were good but the rest of the food does need some improvement and adjustment. It's somewhat of a gamble in serving some of the classic items cause they look too plain and not the most appealing food to eat even though that's their classic appearance. Especially the new generation of diners eat with their eyes and ears more? Perhaps it's ideal to evolve some of the dishes appearance a bit to ensure the longevity of a Hong Kong cafe nowadays. The service was okay, I can see the boss lady trying her best trying to get to every customer when the servers were lacking. This is just my dining experience here this time around, I might give them a try again when they are actually opened. P.S. I am not a fan of businesses in general doing the "soft opening" hack. Most of the time it's more damaging to a new business than good. Open is open, if not ready to open then don't, none of this silly "soft opening" stuffs because you are very vulnerable to crippling your business even before it's actually ready to open. Went early in the morning just when they opened. The place is busy and it's a nice quiet HK style respectful breakfast spot. Service very tentative very friendly and efficient. Food comes out hot and fast and delicious. I have tried the saute beef with spaghetti noodles pineapple bun with scrambled egg, beef ginger with vermicelli, Homemade BBQ with macaroni, tomato and spam with macaroni. So I basically tried all their noodle soups except two which I will add to my check off list the next time I'm there. Overall, I enjoyed this place.
