Not bad, it CAN get freak-ishly loud like any other restaurant can. They are quite consistent with checking up on you. I had some baked pasta thing and some chicken noodle thing the last time I was there, they could really lay off the MSG and some of the grease, you could just burp enough back up after.. naasty. I don't come here often as I am living in the US for job reasons but I will visit it at least once every time I came back to Vancouver to visit family members. I went to Cafe Gloucester a few days ago and they are as good as before. I ordered their most affordable set lunch which comes with soup+bun/butter, a main course plus a hot beverage. For the soup, I chose the Russian Borscht soup and it tasted as good as the ones I tasted in Hong Kong. For the main course, I went with Beef Stroganoff and the rice came in a separate dish. It tasted good, but the beef was a steak cut into pieces that was marinated with meat tenderizer powder, which is the way Hong Kong style cafes like to do. For the hot beverage I chose the HK style milk tea and it was very good. Service-wise the waitresses were polite and attentive which was better than other HK cafes. Of course, all the above good things come at a price and this set lunch was $19.50 before tax and tips. Their menu was filled with higher priced items and most western entrees are in the 30 dollar range, and one could easily spend $40-50 here for a lunch meal. This may only reflect the surging living standard of this part of Canada as a result of the unreasonable real estate appreciation. read more

My friend's breakfast arrived and was finished before my breakfast arrived. I may as well have come to eat alone. Part of my food finally arrived. When you order you may want to request they go easy on the salt. I can't say that I am a fan of this place at least not for breakfast. If you are in a hurry do not order the congee set. So I went for portugese style currie porkchop on rice and sister went with honeymoon rice with prawns (half cream sauce/half tomatoe sauce). The food came after ~15mins or so, and wow the generous portion for $7.95. My curry porkchop was good, but the pork tasted a bit funny, to be honest. It taste like a bit sour? Was the meat gone bad slightly perhaps? I am not sure. But I don't feel like making a huge fuss so I eat. My sister was not happy with her dish for sure, she says there's 3 prawns in the whole dish and a whole lotta cream sauce. I took my family here recently. The food is well made and fresh. You can definitely feel it is a bit of a classier Hong Kong cafe. I recommend the booths if you can get them. One thing I love about cafe food is that it is open late! Quick service, and can always enjoy a milk tea. I got the curry beef on rice with ovaltine! Gloucester seems to be the most popular HK cafe in Vancouver - it has been around for a long time and clearly has made some fans. Gloucester is relatively pricey for a HK-style cafe (assuming their model inspired places like Copa or iCafe). Portions being on the smallish-average side but in an much more comfortable setting than in your typical HK cafe. $1 extra for iced drinks and their 'jumbo' size upgrade for $1.50 brings makes it the same size as some other good HK cafes. The food is solid and this places seems to be very consistent in quality. I can see why it's so popular (especially since it's open late). However, I really can't give it higher marks since it doesn't offer the value that other HK cafes do. But the food is tasty and consistent and I've yet to be disappointed when eating here. read more

If Nando's Flame-Grilled Chicken didn't exist, I'd insist on my last meal on Earth being the Stewed Beef Brisket on Crispy Noodles from Café Gloucester on Cambie and West 17th Avenue. (Or maybe just a bunch green mangoes from Vietnam, but there are no review sections for Vietnam street vendors here. I digress). I've hunted out every single Beef Brisket joint around town and not a single one - not even one in Chinatown - can compare to Gloucester's. The brisket is soft and tender and not too fatty and not too salty, but the sauce is to die for (literally; especially if this is the last meal I am having on Earth). It's greasy enough to fill your belly but not so greasy as to leave you feeling like a tub of lard afterwards. The dish is a decent size in my opinion, and I (almost literally) lick the plate every time I come here, but the servers always say it's HUGE - that's what she said - and are ALWAYS appalled at the speed at which I digest the whole platter. The dish is affordable at $10.99 (it IS quite large, in the grand scheme of things), but they have a smaller version of it available at lunch hours and after 9pm for $7.99. I usually can't wait this long during dinner time and I pound my fists on the table like an infant while I wait for my order at 7pm when the craving hits. Unfortunately, I haven't tried many of their other dishes, and the ones that I have tried I don't give much thought to because I'm just so tunnel-visioned on my Stewed Beef Brisket on Crispy Noodles. The fried rice, as I recall, is delicious and not too greasy, and the wonton soup is decent, but you can get better wontons elsewhere. The restaurant itself is odd. They tinker piano versions of popular tunes from the speakers and it kind of feels like you are at a very old person's wedding. The decor looks like the intent was to cater to a more luxury clientele, but the green awning out front with a very non-descript "Café Gloucester" written across it doesn't exactly scream "BEST BEEF BRISKET IN THE CITY". It doesn't even scream Chinese - what with a name like Gloucester - which is the cuisine offered on most of the menu. However, the menu does offer some Western food - spaghetti, steak, pork chops, etc. - but I'm wary to try them because it feels too much like a Chinese restaurant I would rather treat my Western taste buds to the local Cactus Club or Milestone's, where I know the Western food has been tailored and refined. This could just be subjective on my part. The service is decent - although the servers are friendly, they don't often address you when you walk through the door (many-a-time, I have found myself seating my hungry bottom down at my table of choice) and they can be slow in getting your order even into the system. Often, I find the communication can be difficult and if you make too many changes to your order, it seems like they give up altogether and give you something entirely different (True story. Not to me, but to a friend). It's always hit or miss with the service here; sometimes they walk by and fill up your water and/or tea and sometimes they don't talk to you at all until you pay your bill. And SOMETIMES, you have to walk around the whole restaurant following them around to even get your bill. So all in all, service is sub-par. So the only reason I haven't given this review five giant stars is because not only am I not thoroughly impressed with the service, I haven't tried much else on the menu and I can't be objective. If I was just reviewing the Stewed Beef Brisket on Crispy Noodle alone, I would click "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" in a half-hearbeat, but the truth is, there are some things lacking in the restaurant itself. But there's always room for improvement. Just don't change my brisket, or it will be a very sad day. read more

The food at this place is good.. I come here every so often... And yesterday was actually my first time eating late at 9:30pm. it was not busy. However, they forgot about our order and we waited for almost an hour .. It was ridiculous!!! Even the people who seated after us, got their food. I was so mad!!! Happened to know we would be in the area over the weekend, so called and placed the order without a problem. Nothing super special about it, but we do like the baked spaghetti bolognese. The house special tasted like leftover seafood from the week before and was extremely bland to taste. Came here for dinner with my boyfriend and his mom and step-dad. Ordered a friend rice, honey garlic pork chops, Hainanese chicken laksa, and a shrimp and egg swirl fried noodle. I like the shrimp and egg swirl noodle. It was tasty and had a good wok flavour to it. The laksa was passable. The soup base didn't taste authentic and really just tasted like curry soup. There were a lot of pieces of chicken in it though so that's a plus! The fried rice had fried garlic, which is not a bad thing....except it tasted burnt and was over powering. I could have done without this dish. The pork chops came last in our meal. They were ok. Nothing to write home about. Service was fast. We were in and out of there in less than an hour. read more

Café Gloucester- 1/14/2011 Who serve the best HAINAN chicken and has the best value in town. Its debatable, most of the reviewers say Café D'lite, some say Mui Garden, and some said Banana Leaf and Panang Delight Café opened recently. It seems I am the only one say Café Gloucester on Cambie. Their Chicken cooked just right, the meat is tender and smooth as well as its taste. I haven't catered that restaurant few weeks now. To reconfirm my thinking, I decided to have the Hainanese Chicken Rice dinner to day at Café Gloucester. I may say their Hainanese Chicken just as good as before; tender and juicer, very consistence. The Hainanese Chicken Rice dinner comes with a bowl of special daily soup, garnished with sweet vinegar carrot and lo-bak, salt peanut and green verges. It's less than $10. I think this is tremendous value. They have very good selections in the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have been customer of this eatery for long time; they have good food, good service and very good value. Highly recommended. read more

I've been coming here with family for years. Although some may complain about the service, you must understand that it is unfair to rate a HK-style café based on their service. What these types or restaurants are known for are speed, wide variety in their menu (seriously, they have everything you can think of), and bang-for-the-buck. Café Glouchester excels in all of the aforementioned areas. Other bonuses are that they stay open until the wee hours (have fixed my late night hunger on multiple occasions) and if you become a regular, they'll know you personally. The first item on their feature menu that evening was a half lobster and steak combo for $43.99. No thanks. Instead, we opted for a 'value-priced' $9.99 beef brisket noodle soup, which was ok. We also tried their half creamy shrimp and half tomato shredded chicken on fried rice (really meh) and minced pork with melon on fried vermicelli (relatively good), both around $18. Bad experience. We had ordered the pork hock which came cold inside and not seasoned well. We also ordered the Portuguese chicken with rice and a jumbo size milk tea. The taste was ok but jumbo drink is same size as the regular drink, why would they charge extra for the same size? When the bill came, we realize that the drink isn't included with the meal, we looked at the menu again and find out almost every other dishes include drinks except the bake rice selection...
