Home fries were pretty good too, I think there was a little cheese added to them with the onions, which is always a plus but they should make lactose-intolerant customers more aware. Service wasn't the best, they made a few little mistakes with my friends order (milk in coffee when she asked for black and forgot her home fries). The bread and jam were ok, but nothing noteworthy. The blueberry pancakes were good but not great, and came with cheap fake syrup in those tiny plastic squares. Bacon tasted fine, but it wasn't crispy. It had more of a beef jerky texture. The food is really great (which accounts for the 4 stars) but the restaurants identity is confused. When you walk in there is very little direction on this being a sit down place or order at the counter. They have items that make you think its self serve, such as a garbage can immediately to your right as you walk in and a menu on the wall behind a counter with a cash register. Also bakery cases full of items to choose from. But alas, it's not. They will seat you and wait on you. The staff is very friendly. The food is amazing. Flavorful and fresh. This cafe is a great breakfast spot. My wife and I flew into Boston late and needed a hearty breakfast the next morning. It was close to our hotel and gave it a try, and it was really good. I ate the western omelet on a croissant with potatoes and I don't know what condiment was on the sandwich and potatoes but I loved it. We came back a few days later and we both ate the French toast. Delicious! It was my first time in Boston and I stumbled across this little gem right in time for breakfast. Shakshuka was amazing! Came here before starting the freedom trail. The service and food was great!!! We ordered the bacon egg and cheese on a croissant, and strawberry Nutella crepe. I also got an iced coffee and everything was reasonably priced for great food! The food came out very quickly-The crepe was pretty huge and crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and plenty of strawberries and Nutella to go around. The sandwich was satisfying as well. Very friendly staff! I had no idea what I wanted, but I was in the mood for something different, so I went for the Saudi Coffee. The barista, who was wearing a headscarf, which inspired confidence in her opinion for Saudi Coffee, explained it well! She even asked me what I thought after I drank some, and explained some more about it. I enjoyed the cardamom, got a new experience, and had a very friendly and helpful conversation. I always go here when I need a quick bite! This is the place to go if you're craving a Nutella crepe or a nice warm sand which. The staff is always super friendly and kind. Unlike most places downtown, this cafe is not as expensive. I ordered their sweet and spicy melt and it was deliciouss. Their smoothies are also pretty good as well- I've ordered the peach and mango smoothies in the past and each were creamy and sweet. This is a cozy spot with about 10 tables (4- and 2-top). The food gets a 3/5. It is mostly standard American-style breakfasts, so it's hard to go really wrong. The shakshuka I ordered was quite good flavor-wise. However, it wasn't really what shakshuka usually is. It came with 2 fried eggs on top, instead of eggs cooked with the tomato sauce. The cheese (I think feta) was also just on one side of the dish, and not cooked with the sauce. Instead of having every component spread throughout, it just seems like the components are put together after they're individually prepared. I also consider scrambled eggs to be the metric by which a breakfast restaurant is judged. These were just kindof flat. The service gets a 2/5. My friend ordered her eggs as fried over-hard, and they came really runny, which is just not what she ordered. Eggs "any style" are the bread and butter of breakfast spots, so it's not great if they are not done as ordered. This is also NOT really a place where you can sit and enjoy your meal and company. Our party of 4 was there for exactly an hour (including being seated, ordering, and waiting for our food) before we were straight up asked to give up our table. read more

My office moved to the DTX neighborhood and I discovered this place on my walk in one day. That day I had an egg and cheese on a croissant. I'm going to stand by what I said that day, which is, Temple Cafe has the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. The croissant is flaky and chewy. The egg is fresh and cooked medium so it's deliciously gooey. And then they gently press the finished sandwich on the griddle to finish it off and melt the cheese. Today's adventure in taste was the eggplant mozzarella advertised on the sandwich board outside (and what drew me inside initially). The panini bread is soft, yet delicately crunchy. The fresh mozzarella, eggplant, tomato, and pesto is a joyous Tuscan marriage of flavor. To top it off, try the pillows of heaven (or at least that's what I call them). Toasted shredded coconut on top of an almost-flan-but-silky-not-slimy filling on a delicious nested bed of yet more shredded coconut. The best part about this place is the staff. Friendly, oh so friendly. When I asked about the pillows of heaven, the man behind the counter asked if I wanted to try some instead of just listing all the ingredients. Today he has gifted me two because he wanted to even out the tray and I simply couldn't leave 1 piece alone. Do I regret eating both pieces? Almost. Felt like I was back in NYC at this place. Sandwiches and drinks are made fresh. I had a sweet and spicy chicken melt without ranch dressing, a fresh mint lemonade, and a slice of caramel apple walnut cake. The sandwich was $7.99, the drink $2.99, and the cake $4.75. The sandwich was fantastic, very freshly made and spicy but not too spicy. The lemonade was AMAZING. Honestly I may come back here just for that. It was that good. The cake was a disappointment. It tasted fine but it was very very dry and unsatisfying. The employees were super friendly and keep the restaurants quite clean. I think this place was expensive but the food quality is high, and prices comparable to other restaurants/cafes in downtown Boston. Cafe 26 was a gem I stumbled upon with friends while out for brunch in the city. We arrived at peak hours on a Saturday and waited about 20m in an unofficial queue. It was a smaller space, but even with a group of 4 we were seated swiftly. The staff were hustling though and we had quick service and good recommendations to boot! I got a mango smoothie that was perfect for the hot spring day and the Mediterranean crepe that our waiter recommended to me was excellent as well. Reasonably priced for the area, you can expect good service and superb food from cafe 26, I'll definitely keep this spot in mind when I visit the Commons at brunch time! read more

We had come here because we received a coupon. Upon arriving, we got seated in the back. We wanted to make sure they knew ahead of time that we were using the coupon. But our waiter wasn't familiar with it and neither were his colleagues. He said he'd have to contact the owner because they weren't here and I had asked if he could. But it was too busy and he didn't have time to. The issue here is the owners of small establishments like this may have a ton of promotions running online (I.e Groupon, etc.) and fail to keep their staff informed. This lack of communication causes so much inefficiency for staff and customers. In the end Yousef, our waiter, was very nice to honor the coupon and we left it to him to show the owner. The food: Shakshuka had a lot of flavors going on. It was pretty good! The Tuscan Chicken crepe unfortunately was rather dry and although pesto was mentioned in the menu, but it was subtle to no pesto at all. We had to listen to the guy beside us send back his egg sandwich twice because she brought him scrambled eggs instead of over medium. Then, she shoved my plate under another guy's nose to ask if he ordered it. "No, I didn't order anything" he says while she's still holding it over the heads of two people to get it in front of the guy by the window. I look over and think, "I bet that's our sandwich" and "Aren't we still in the middle of a pandemic?" Does it take a pandemic to consider protecting a customer's food from another customer's breath? An owner (manager/head host...) who simultaneously yells at the staff, kisses ass to most customers, and ignores some customers - that was the first 15 minutes of my experience at this cafe. This particular gentleman had led a party of 2 to a table immediately before I had come in, and then proceeds to pass right by me 4 times without an acknowledgement that I was standing at the door. Meanwhile, during those 4 passes, he managed to yell rather loudly at his staff in multiple languages, schmoozed with a couple of seated tables, yelled out more orders to the staff, passed with a coffee carafe... all without even bothering to look at me. The hostess at the counter finally realized that I was waiting, and pointed me to a table literally next to the door. Great; I get to hang it with the takeout condiments. Meanwhile, a few more parties came in, and they ALL managed to get attention from the owner/manager. And I get handed a takeout menu when it is clear that real menus exist. For God's sake, I'm a seated customer! I put my order in. 25 minutes after stepping into the cafe, the owner/manager finally managed to interact with me when he dropped off my plate of food. "Sir..." ( plops down my breakfast) My breakfast was the shakshuka - advertised as sizzling eggs Mediterranean style. It was more like a chunky Ragu base set in an oven safe dish with two fried eggs over easy. Oh wait, I forgot. There was feta cheese. Not Eyetalian - Greek! My meal punctuated with "Would you like something else?", proceeded by the waitress running away. Now, it's customary to get a check after a waitress asks if you wanted something else and you reply No. Instead, I had to go and beg for a check. That's awesome. Even better, when I went to the counter to ask for the check, I was asked, "what did you order?" (Excuse me?) Bread was toasted and a little hard, but overall I enjoyed the sandwich. Chicken was tender. Flavors blended well. It was supposed to have ranch dressing on it, but I didn't detect any. Still was fine. I was pretty indifferent about it actually since I was by myself. Only negative was that the employees behind the counter were talking extremely loud. Like, they were at the end of the counter furthest away from me and I heard everything they said. No one wants to hear employees carrying on a very loud conversation. I was the only one in there so maybe they felt free to do so. The guy who took my order was super friendly though. I'm certain there are lots of better places to have lunch in Boston. Delicious, healthy, and stunning food! The prices were extremely good and the crepes, eggs, and home fries were so delicious, it was like the food was made with the hands of an angel. I'm not sure that I ate here correctly - which sounds weird but what I mean is that nobody was in the cafe when I arrived and it looked like the kind of place where you order at the register and get your food before sitting. So that's what I did. But then more people came in and they were seated and provided menus. I bussed my own table and now I wonder if that's another thing I technically shouldn't have done. Shrug. Let's get to the food. I ordered the Tuscan chicken crepe and a mint lemonade. Both were really good. The crepe was stuffed well and didn't seem skimpy. I was prepared for the mint lemonade to look green because of other reviews sharing that they blend their mint. I was curious as to what that would taste/feel like.
