Cafe 53 is such a hidden gem (at least for now) in the Theater District! I went in blind wanting some fresh fruit and a drink, but I was pleasantly surprised with a bountiful display of fresh salad bar items, fruit, hot food, sandwiches, waffles, omelettes, and healthy packaged products! Everything I got from the self service area in the morning was delicious! The fruit was plump, sweet, and tasty, including the kiwi! The mango and papaya were super fresh! All of the veggies were tasty, and they have a huge selection of pasta salads, grain salads, and more. I wish I had a chance try more of their food items! Ordered an "egg white wrap". Menu says it should come with veggies and things. Guy at the counter asked what I wanted on it, thought that meant in addition to what the menu stated. Said cheeae. Got a burrito tortilla with egg whites and cheese, nothing else. Makes me think guy did not know what was supposed to go on the wrap. Worse, after eating my cheese+egg whites, I ask the checkout counter where the restroom is. "Restroom is only for sit-down customers." "That's fine, I just ate my wrap. Where's the restroom?" "I did not see you." "I was over there at the table eating for an hour." "I'm sorry." (blank stare) Service needs to get their stuff together. read more

This place is so special! It's a deli, coffee shop, convenient store, buffet, bakery all in one! We found this place while we were lost looking for another restaurant. We got breakfast the first day. The #4 French toast is better than any I've had in a while. It comes w/eggs & sausage links. I didn't like how they cooked my eggs too much white. My daughter got the veggie omelette and it looked good. She said it tasted good too! We stopped back by the next morning for breakfast and I got a yogurt parfait-delicious, my daughter got a muffin. Name a fresh thing you'd want for a quick lunch, an d they have it. This is one of the best places in midtown to grab a quick bite. They have a huge variety of hot and cold items by weight, soups, salads, make your own pasta, paninis, sandwiches, sushi, fresh fruit, smoothies, and lots of fresh coffee and iced tea options. For those who have time for a sit down meal, there's plenty of seating space as well. I was pleasantly surprised to not just find office lunch crowd but several elderly couples getting a slow meal and juices too. And I was blown away by the quality of the food - the pasta was so flavorful, the mashed potatoes were as creamy and buttery as they should be. Extremely rude cashier. Most of the people are very friendly and pleasant but there's one woman who is just down right rude! We were checking out and I noted the chip on my card can sometimes be problematic and our cashier was like 'no problem we will figure it out' but this other cashier (owner? long crunchy brown hair and glasses) started barking NO NO NO WE CANT USE THIS CARD and I am like well we haven't even tried yet but she was like if the chip doesn't work we can't use it. So our NICE cashier gives the chip a try for the first time and it didn't work and this other woman behind her is still yelling DONT LET THEM USE THAT CARD DONT LET THEM DONT. Our cashier was clearly embarrassed and so I handed some cash to her instead but this other woman was still yelling away and I said to her "we are using another form of payment please - do you accept cash - will cash work" and she mouthed back some unintelligible and indignant response back and continued to explain to another that customer we were being difficult haha. I'm laughing because we said basically nothing to her but she flew off the handle for no apparent reason. Based on this alone I wouldn't return. We only grabbed a few snacks so am only reviewing on the insanely absurd service at this place! read more

I go here almost every morning and recently for lunch too. There's a great selection of everything here. The staff is really pleasant and friendly. The grill chef Miguel knows me by heart and has an amazing memory. He churns out orders like a true pro. And trust me he is, the construction crew brings him up to 10 orders at a time and they only need to read them to him once and he gets it every time. It's almost always busy and has a sizeable seating area. Would recommend. read more

Used to come here all the time due the fact that I work upstairs. However, I got tired of the negativity of the women that work the cash wrap there, and the fact they won't run a credit card for $5.79 (their minimum is $6). If they were good at customer service maybe they would have tried to upsell us larger coffees or something, instead of simply demanding cash. The 21cents seems pretty irrelevant considering my colleagues and I have all stopped going there. It's 2019 and you're next to a Starbucks...good luck! This place is no good if you rely on it as an every day establishment. The line for eggs/sandwich/bagel is always long, they don't have enough people working, and it takes a very long time to get your order. Typically there is a construction worker who has fifteen other orders besides his own who you have to wait on, pretty much like clockwork every morning. I'm fact, I am typing this review as I wait for my sandwich. The food is decent when you actually get it, but don't expect efficiency here. They need more staff. read more

This place is DISGUSTING. I went in with a family member who was recently in an accident. I asked if they could use the bathroom and was told we had to buy something. As I picked something out and stood in line, I asked again for the bathroom key. They said I couldn't have the key until I was finished paying, and made my family member stand there in pain while I waited in line. I asked to speak to the manager and told them I thought their policy was dehumanizing and they should've let my family member use the restroom while I stood in line to buy something. I set my phone on the counter while I spoke to the manager, and then heard one of the cashiers tell the other one to "push her phone off the counter"?!?! Then as we left, this same cashier said "screw you" and "go to hell" to me and my elderly family member. The manager did nothing. Consistently rude customer service and yet I keep going back. They have a good variety of healthy options and generally good prices. That mixed with convenience wins over having a pleasant checkout experience. More on why they are rude: On my most recent visit, the clerk was charging 3.99 for quest bars I had purchased for 1.99 a few days earlier. I said, "oh I'll put them back. They aren't marked and I paid $2 a few days ago." He huffed and acted angry he had to recalculate the total. He then exclaimed, "they've always been 3.99! Don't start with me!" I didn't think I was starting anything but calling a customer a liar isn't very professional. On other visits, they generally just calculate the total quietly and don't ever say anything. A smile goes a long way in customer service and so does an amiable explanation of correct pricing rather than making accusations. read more

24 hour deli directly across 53rd Street from Hilton Midtown has a terrific salad bar and an equally fine fresh fruit bar. Grill makes hot breakfasts in the morning. Two kinds of oatmeal and single-serving dry cereal, sweet rolls. A sushi bar. Grab a home- made sandwich to go or whatever the grill puts out at lunchtime. In short, there's lots of choices here and much of it is made fresh on premises. Small tables and a window counter for people wat hing. Parking? C'mon, this is midtown Manhattan. I just ate here tonight for the first time. Google says it's open 24 hours which is great if you need a place to grab food and go. There's a variety of cuisine from sushi, salads, soups, fruits, sandwiches, desserts and a hot buffet. You can eat in and stay at the tables they have or take your food to go. There were so many things that it was overwhelming to decide. I got some sushi and sushi rolls which were very fresh. I also got some fruit which was also sweet and fresh. And, I got a Caesar salad and added some Brussel sprouts, olives and mozzarella. Everything I ate I liked. The only downside I can think of is that some of the hot food sitting out looked like it had been sitting out for a while. I also didn't order anything hot so I can't say how that was, but I was pleased with the selection offered and the taste. read more

We were very pleasantly surprised. My wife and I were looking for some place to eat for less than the 50+ dollars you usually have to pay around here. The food and the drinks were incredibly diverse. Both buffet style (ready to eat), by order, or bagged and boxed. But the taste was what I liked best. We both ate plenty and left very satisfied. read more

I visited this deli last month while staying at a nearby hotel. The hotel concierge suggested it for hot soup. I purchased a large cup of chicken tortilla soup, and it was soooo salty that it tasted like brine--so salty I couldn't eat it! I asked the cashier if I could exchange the soup for something else, because it was much too salty. She called someone on the phone to ask if it was OK to allow me to exchange. She then told me that I could exchange it for another flavor soup. I explained it is likely that the next soup is made with the same broth and it would also be too salty for my taste. I asked if I could have chicken salad instead and pay whatever the difference. She declined, and I wasted $6. If you like overly salty soup, shop here. If you want to avoid the poor, unaccommodating service displayed at this place, dine elsewhere. read more

This is a hard place to figure out...It is part deli, part buffet (paid for by the pound at $9.99 per), part sushi place (pre-made), part convenience store and part coffee shop. And it stays open late. We arrived around 10 pm for a late dinner. The buffet has about 40 items to choose from, including a salad bar, and hot food choices (mac and cheese, steak fries, fried chicken, corn, fried rice, noodles, and other various deli style foods). I ordered a Turkey Club Sandwich, which was pretty decent tasting. Came on a sesame hogie style bun, which was fairly fresh. I also picked out a pre-made sushi pack, which consisted of Ebi (shrimp) and California Roll combo for $8.99 (8 total pieces). The sushi was ok...the rice and the shrimp were a bit stale, but that could be because it was late, and the item was pre-made earlier in the day. With the sandwich and the sushi and a soda, it was $23.00...Not sure I paid a fair price for what I bought, but again, these are NYC and prices, no matter what restaurant, are always higher than what I expect to pay. As I stated, this place is hard to figure...the decor is a mixture of Convenience store with deli and has a few tables and chairs for people to sit and enjoy their food. PSEUDO-Korean food made by real Koreans...I mean, come on, if you know your food sucks (if you DON'T know, then you have a bigger problem than I thought), don't try to peddle it to others. Change the Korean corner into one for Mongolian BBQ or something. I tried their yookgaejang (spicy beef soup) just now, and it tasted NOTHING like the yookgaejang I've had all my life from what must be hundreds of different establishments. Not only was the overall taste weird, the beef in it was off...as in WAY OFF. And the guy at the corner offered me kimchi to go with my yookgaejang as if he was doing me a favor, so I took it. And...I open it and the kimchi is basically transparent. If you know your kimchi, you know that means it is over-ripened. I took one sniff at its super-sour smell and chucked it into the garbage can. The few non-Korean options that I've tried here seem to be OK though. All I know is, it's sad that I have to issue this warning about the Korean food at a Korean-run deli. read more
