So, my experience here was a bit mixed, but overall it was pretty nice. My group of friends (6 of us in total) went around noon today for a bite, and at first, it seemed really nice. The atmosphere is nice, with high ceilings and lots of natural light. The decor is rather eclectic/hipster-y and fun, and my friends and I were seated immediately. However, it quickly became apparent that there either wasn't enough staff, because it took nearly 20 minutes before anyone stopped by our table. Once we ordered, the bartender (possibly the owner?) brought us our drinks quickly, and he was even so thoughtful to bring me simple syrup instead of sugar for my iced coffee so it would mix better (the coffee was also very good). However, we went back to waiting, and it took another 45 minutes for us to get our food. Once we got the food, it was really good - I absolutely loved my "59 breakfast sandwich," and my friends enjoyed their omelettes as well. But again, it took a while to get the check after we asked. So I guess the TLDR here is that the food is really good, but the service (at least on some days) can be super slow. read more

This place just does not disappoint! I have been back here many times and have tried quite a few of the menu items. One item I make sure I have with every meal, the potato wedges. Oh. My. Gosh! The potato wedges are phenomenal. Crispy on the outside, soft and warm inside. I love their ranch dressing for dipping. They heat up well, on that rare occasion I have some leftover. I must admit. I was a skeptic. Polenta wings? I am born and raised in Buffalo. I am a carnivore. I like to think I know some of the best places in and around town to get real wings (and I do) but why not try these meatless ones? They were extraordinary! I have tried the Spicy Buffalo and the Pitted BBQ. I prefer the BBQ but wouldn't turn down the Buffalo. Excellent food, service, and ambiance. I love the food here. They make Polenta wings, which have a great spice and crispy-ness to them. Polenta wings in Buffalo needs to be a thing. C'mon Buffalo, us vegetarians love hot sauce! Fresh ingredients, inventive dishes, and a great selection. I'm a fan of their hummous and the amount of garlic is wonderful to the experience. The tortellini is also pretty fantastic. Plus, the portions here are more than generous. Also, they have excellent prices and quality in alcohol. Beer and wine are plentiful and well selected. I've had lunch at Café 59 a few times now, once on a weekday, and twice on a Sunday. All my experiences have been positive, so I'll keep coming back. I love that you can order from their brunch menu AND their full regular menu on Sundays. Breakfast foods are good and all, but sometimes I'd rather have a sandwich than eggs at noon on a Sunday. They have A LOT of meatless options. I've had three different vegetarian-friendly dishes so far, the black bean burger, the polenta "wing" wrap, and the parmesan bomber sub with eggplant, which have all been good--and there are still other vegetarian options on the menu that I haven't tried! If you're a chicken finger enthusiast like my husband, you can get homemade chicken fingers here four different ways (on a salad, in a wrap, in a sub, or as a platter with potato wedges, celery and blue cheese), depending on how you're feeling that day. After frequenting Cafe 59 at its old location, I came back for lunch this afternoon with a co-worker. I was worried that with the move across the street and modifications to the menu, the place wouldn't be quite the same. My coworker and I were greeted and chose a seat outside on the porch area. The service was relaxed without seeming lazy. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. We ordered some drinks and a three bean salad (a potential lunch-sized portion for $3), which was light and healthy. We each got salads which were gigantic and satisfying. The Mediterranean salad was a generous serving of greens, hummus, tabbouleh, roasted eggplant, feta, roasted red peppers, onions, and tomatoes. All for $9. I have never craved leftover salad like I did later this afternoon. All in all, cafe 59 hasn't lost anything with the move across the street. For lunch, the place is still bustling, friendly, and affordable. 12/27/15 Edit: okay so the salads are now mostly $10. (Probably Obama's fault, right?) After hearing so many great reviews on their chicken finger sub, I immediately needed to go and see for myself. It is conveniently located on the corner of Allen & Franklin, so I stopped in one evening while riding my bike. The bartender was very friendly and welcoming, which is always pleasant when entering an establishment for the first time. Came here for the first time yesterday evening during a bike ride with my BF. Neither one of us have ever been. Always just passed it by thinking, this place looks cool. Then...bam! Any way, he ordered an IPA (southerntier IPA) and I ordered a diet Pepsi while we skimmed the menu. The blackness burger sounded good at the moment but I wasn't exactly what one would call, starving. We ordered the hummus from the appetizer menu. I wasn't sure what to expect because it just read, Hummus. There wasn't a description. I wasn't sure if it were served with pita chips or... While we waited for the hummus we played a game of Mario Cart. That was pretty awesome. The bartender was super cool and attentive. Not overly attentive. The just right attentive. When the hummus arrived I was in awe. I mean, it's not what I expected. Cafe 59 has a new menu, so I thought I'd give an update review. First of all, Cafe 59 has some of the best soups in Buffalo! Personal favs go to their Pumpkin Ginger, Cream of Zucchini, and Curry Garam Masala. The soups switch weekly, so you might not always find those, but I don't think I've ever had a soup there that I disliked. Not to mention if you get a sandwich or salad, you can get a cup of soup for just $1.50! Where else can you get a deal like that? If you're looking for an appetizer, I'm rooting for the underdog and strongly suggest their Sweet & Sour Beets. For a lot of native Buffalonians when they hear the word beets their first reaction is eww. I can never understand that, because their beets taste sweet and delicious and are jam packed full of nutrients and flavor. What's not to like? For sandwiches, Cafe 59 has the best Reuben I've ever had in my life. They make their own corned beef in house, and the meat melts in your mouth like butter. :) If you're a vegetarian and like spice, you definitely need to try their Black Bean Burger. Even if you're not vegetarian, I've seen meat-eaters salivate over this burger with roasted red peppers, pepper jack cheese, and sriracha mayo. It is absolutely delicious! For dinner, I definitely recommend ordering an item off of their specials. In all the years I've been to Cafe 59 I have never been disappointed by their specials yet. Most memorable special is probably their Roasted Pine Nut Penne Pesto with its delicious garlicky goodness. Another fav is their Grilled Pork Loin with Sriracha BBQ Glaze over Fried Rice. The pork is crispy and tender and it's flavor in every bite. We happened upon Cafe 59 after the Elmwood Ave. Arts Festival; it felt very much like an art gallery! There's a few tables when you first walk in, and a small bar area. We were seated in the side dining room, which had plenty of natural light from the huge windows overlooking Allen Street. I got a phenomenal meal with a craft beer and great service for $20, including tip. How do they do it? I live in South Florida and would have paid $35 for the same experience down here. I was alone in Buffalo on a Saturday night and ventured into Cafe 59 because it wasn't busy and seemed like a friendly and inviting neighborhood place -- I didn't think that I would feel self-conscious sitting alone. I ordered the Moroccan spiced chick peas over yogurt with a side salad. Simple, but still special and delicious. And I was surprised that, as I was waiting for my meal, my server brought strips of some sort of artisan bread served with a side of olive oil flavored with roasted garlic cloves. Again, I was asking myself: How do they do it? I lived in Buffalo's Allentown neighborhood nearly 30 years ago. If Cafe 59 had been in business at that time, I would have easily become a regular. This was one of the best accidental finds while taking a new colleague out for a meal. I discovered this corner cafe and I'll be honest, I had no idea what I wanted, but I was hungry. I walked in to find a fully loaded bar with some quality craft brews (gluten free options as well). And then something magical happened. My childhood materialized in front of me as I saw a fully setup N64 running Mario Kart at the end of the bar. I immediately sat down with some pre-existing players and killed about an hour with a chocolate coffee porter. Let's get to the food. There are vegan and gluten free options like you wouldn't believe. Out of sheer curiosity I started with the polenta wings (spicy buffalo) and they were okay, but surprisingly addictive. Honestly I wish I got regular wings so I'd only recommend them to my vegetarian friends. My entree was a soup and sandwich combo of the chili and bourbon wrap with a chicken cutlet. Friends- this meal was massive. To the point where I had to figure out what was being eaten here and what was leftovers. The food was also very well seasoned and tasted pretty fantastic. I've been struggling with the lack of flavor and spice at some Buffalo places, but this place brought it. This is a hidden gem in Allentown! A fellow Yelper recommended this place to me as somewhere to go if I wanted healthier dinner options and cocktails. I had the Harvest Salad (house roasted turkey, field greens, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, gorgonzola, red onion, house balsamic vinaigrette) which was absolutely delicious. It was a good size and filled me up. For my drink, I decided on a signature cocktail that mixed whiskey and apple cider. I could have had about 10 of them easily! The service was fast and the workers were attentive to all of our questions. We were headed to the Sabres game after so they made sure we had enough time to spare. I love the revival of Allentown and Cafe 59 is no exception. They offer minimally processed versions of local favorites. The chicken finger sub was awesome. Instead of frozen, crappy, processed chicken, they used a much higher quality product. I wouldn't be surprised if they made the fingers in-house. They also use nice mixed greens on the sandwich instead of shredded iceberg. This was the healthiest version of a pure junk food item I've ever had! The service was fast and friendly. The only thing that would make this place better to me is an updated decor. It's bland beyond bland. Maybe it's better at night when they can control the lighting. During the day it's super bright from the huge windows. The furniture is minimalist and there's nothing interesting on the walls. I didnt' feel the desire to hang around after we were done eating. A fellow Yelper had recommended Cafe 59 to us a few weeks ago and we finally made it in! We were downtown last Friday night and decided to try it out! We were able to get a spot on the street right across from the front door. The restaurant is on the corner towards the not so busy end of Allen which I thought was perfect. When we walked in it was 7:15 and there were a few tables open but we chose to sit at the bar. That is where we met Jeff & Owen! It's always nice and refreshing when the bartenders are friendly, smiling and genuinely happy to greet you! I started out with a Hendricks & tonic and my husband had the Long Goodbye specialty drink. Both were tall and tasty! We took our time browsing the menu as there were many good choices. They have a daily specials menu as well which makes it even harder to decide! On the specials menu they had a Roasted corn, banana pepper and smoked mozzarella risotto which I just couldn't stop thinking about as I love a good risotto....but I wanted something else so I asked Jeff if they would let me order just a side dish rather than a full entrée. He went back to the kitchen and quickly came back and said "no problem!" I was so happy and excited! I chose the Harvest Turkey wrap as Owen had explained to us that they roast and carve all their own meats. That means nice and fresh to me! I also ordered a side of the that special risotto. My husband ordered the soup/salad/bread combo dish. The food only took about 15 minutes to come out. Of course I couldn't wait to try the risotto, got a nice spoonful and my taste buds were dancing! This place is a hidden gem. Decided to try it because we were doing an Explore Buffalo tour and the restaurant was the meeting point. It was also offering a free drink with purchase of entree for tour goers. My husband and I are vegan and I noticed they had a few options on the menu. The place has such a cool vibe- with options to sit at a table for wait service, sit at bistro table in bar area or stand and eat at the counter. We decided to sit in the dining room as we had a lot of time. We ordered our drinks and apps and our waiter brought us some complementary homemade whole grain bread and herbed dipping oil that was so unbelievably delicious! Our appetizer was the polenta wings Buffalo style and they were also very good. My entree was the Mediterranean salad (minus feta). This salad was big, beautiful and delicious! Instead of going to just some fast food place, we wanted to try some local flair, a hole in the wall, if you will. And that's just what we got when we walked into this little place. The menu is VERY fairly priced, and you will get a filling for a small cost. I think we were all about 9-12$ a person, and we were held over until we left Buffalo 6 hours later and got back to Rochester. My friend is vegetarian and upon walking in it was the first thing we checked, and this little place is vegetarian friendly with plenty of options. The staff was excellent, VERY friendly, and very helpful at telling us some directions and other places we should check out while in town. I got myself a Turkey sandwich with zucchini, it was full of flavor and the Turkey was moist and fell apart in my mouth. The bread was very soft and obviously fresh from that day, I'm assuming they either bake it right there or they get it fresh daily from a local baker. All of my friends and I enjoyed our meals here a bunch, the only thing 2 of us noticed was the coffee wasn't the best, but that is hardly a complaint when the meal over all was as good as it was. The meal + the service was more than enough to bring me back here again next time I am in the Buffalo area. Cafe 59 causes me more consternation than perhaps any other business in Allentown... and not for the reason that neither location is presently situated at 59 Wherever Street. No, Cafe 59 possesses phenomenal virtues and equally puzzling flaws. FOOD: At its old location and in its previous incarnations as Madonna's and Cafe 59, I was disappointed enough with the food on a regular basis that despite its proximity I haven't explored much of the menu here. But I have had one thing. Over, and over, and over, and over. Because it's simply one of the best sandwiches in Buffalo. It's their chicken finger sub. See, this chicken finger sub tastes as good to my developed palette now as chicken finger subs from Jim's SteakOut tasted back in high school when I new nothing of food or flavor. This sandwich is time travel on a plate... but better. Because the greens are fresh and crisp and not mere tasteless iceberg shreds. The tomatoes are sweet. The fingers are perfectly cooked. The bleu cheese is quality, and gooey, and drippy to just the right degree. The roll is sturdy enough to be only rarely soaked through (usually only when I order take out and the sandwich is pressed and rolled in wax paper). ... and then they give you a bag of generic chips to accompany it. Not house made. Not house-touched in any way. Just a random bag of chips. And you go, "What?! Really?! How can you do one thing so well and then...?! What?!" ATMOSPHERE: I do sincerely respect Cafe 59 for the way that they maintain their premises. The store is always clean, manicured, bright. Staff members don't leave crumbs, napkins, moisture, et cetera on tables, on the bar, on the floor. The big windows allow plenty of sunlight, often the only illumination in the facility. It's bright, airy, modern... and a bit ascetic. Early in my 20's, I loved this aesthetic, but I veer more and more towards comfy, kitschy, and bohemian. Sitting in this space with so many passersby on Allen, I feel exposed and uncomfortable. But a well-developed aesthetic does exist. The more important issue is one of culture. The regular patrons and the main staff are quite chummy. And they carry on conversations with each other. And in such an ascetic, clean, modern space with so little to pad the noise, in a space with little background noise, kitchen noise, or so forth, the sound reverberates. In Cafe 59, mere existence is eavesdropping. That I'm eavesdropping on *personal* conversations rather than just quotidian conversations on the weather, on the Bills, on Allentown redevelopment plans makes it that much worse. VERDICT: As a result of the atmosphere issues, I will sit down to eat AT Cafe 59 on Allen... under any circumstances. BUT... First experience at Cafe 59 was during the Allentown art festival and I was very pleased. The place itself is very cool inside. They have a decent size bar and around 10 tables that are inside. They have another 4-5 tables outside on the patio as well. The service was a bit slow, but they were understaffed so I cant complain too much about that. The people who were working were awesome though. So nice and always smiling. They have a nice selection of beer and a very diverse menu. I got the chicken finger sub because of review in the gusto. After speaking with the waitress, without me asking her to, she promptly sent the manager (I assume) over to our table. The very bad: The manager's attitude. The conversation went something as follows.... Manager: I hear you found a bone in your chicken sandwich? And, what were you expecting ME to do about it? Me: (Confused) Yeah, it's right here...Um... I guess...whatever it is you normally do in such situations? Manager: Well normally, I don't do ANYTHING about bones in chicken, because chickens have bones, you know, and we don't de-bone our chicken. So, I don't comp someone's WHOLE MEAL just because of A SINGLE LITTLE bone in a piece of chicken. After trying to explain that I'd rather not finish eating the sandwich at the risk of chipping a tooth, which is an expensive fix, and he finally agreed to take it off the bill, I was in tears because this manager made me feel like I was doing something wrong by simply bringing the issue to his attention, and seemed to be accusing me of trying to be stingy, when all I wanted was something taken off the bill which I was clearly not going to eat. read more

This place had the worst service I have ever experienced. My bf and I came in to check out the place since it looked like a lovely Cafe from the outside. This is going to be a long review, so bare with me. We had one server the entire time up until the end when we asked for our bill a different server was there. So I'm going to mention about both the servers. So, the moment one of the servers sat us, he did not take any second to introduce himself or even say a quick hello. He slammed the menu on our table and just left. When we were ready to order, he took our orders and left. No thank you or anything. Then, we waited for one sandwich close to an hour and our first server did not even bother to stop by our table to apologise for the delay or even mention why our food was taking so long. So, fast forward to when the food actually arrived, he slammed the plates on our table and just left. Again, no apology or whatsover. Once we were done with the food (the food was good but it was not worth the wait), they came by and asked us if we were done. We quickly said yes and asked for the bill and when the second server came by to our table to handed us the bill without even saying anything. We would have left without tipping them, but our conscious were too good to not leave them anything. So, inconclusion, if you want to be treated like dirt, definitely visit this place and you won't be disappointed. PS: I would give this a zero if I could. read more

Delicious food and great service. Eggplant with gorgonzola was better than any eggplant parmesan I've ever had. Nice and crispy but not greasy. Their cafe salad looked healthy and was an excellent choice for a vegetarian with enough to carry home for lunch tomorrow. The name Cafe 59 is kind of misleading. Based on the name I kind of expected this place to be a small corner coffee shop and at first glance it certainly has the look of a hipster coffee shop but what I found after dining here was that it was much more of a trendy and very artsy bar/tavern than anything else. First thing I found: They have a great beer list here featuring a lot of great local brews like Hamburg Brewery's Sweet Tang (one of my favorites) and a lot of great food options on the menu. They have a nontraditional coffee counter looking bar you can sit at or tables. The overall look of the establishment is very bright and white. The walls are adorned with art pieces done by local artists and that paired with the overall bright white look of the place makes it resemble an art gallery of sorts. I ordered a beer and the fried cheese curds which were awesome and some hummus. Hummus was really flavorful. I'd love to go back and try their chicken finger sub which other reviewers really seemed to like and rave about. Service was good and attentive. I'll be back soon to try more menu options. read more

Had the bourbon stir fried rice,with vegetables and bourbon sauce,with a shrimp add on.My husband ,and friend had the same thing.except with different meat add on.We all agreed that it was watery for a stir fry it looked and tasted like a soup.The shrimp was served on screws across the entree.None of the meat on any of the entree's were seasoned.the so called bourbon sauce taste like a vegetable can soup base.terrible we all agreed .Then for dessert I always loved and raved about the chocolate moose.It was equally as bad.dry and bitter,very stiff and crumbly.unlike the old days I bragged about where the moose was smooth,rich in sweet chocolate goodness.To bad because it's there signature dessert.The service was outstanding.Covid-19 has service at most restaurants going down hill,in quality of food,and experience expectations.It's puzzling the business needs our support yet they give us little to embrace,in food quality,taste or experience.I still gave a generous tip Anyways in support of our service staff.I called to complain but there really didn't seem to be any concern for the terrible quality of food we received.That's why sadly I felt compelled to give this 1 star review.The reason for even one was the wait staff. read more

I really like it here. Food is consistently good, big menu, friendly staff and the kitchen is open late.

I came here for lunch with my friend and we both ordered sandwiches for lunch. It took 43 minutes to get our food. We told the waiter we were in a time crunch and he kept telling us it would be right or leading us to believe we were okay with time. Extremely dissatisfied with the service and lack of honesty he had. I also expressed the dissatisfaction and he responded very passive aggressively saying "I'm sorry were really busy" (well then why did you keep saying the food would be right out?) and the restaurant was barely half full....This restaurant is located near lots of places for people to take their lunch break and should be able to cook a piece of chicken in less than 40 minutes...and I would NOT recommend coming here. Very rude service. Now I have just enough time to take a bite out of my sandwich as I walk back to work. Do not go here. read more

I went there for lunch today and I would expect it to be crowded. It wasn't so it was easy to get a table. The place is small and lay back. I order chicken finger sub and it was good ass hell. They put hot on it and it was the bomb. I'm picky and I enjoyed it. I'll go back again n the serves was good as well. read more

One of the best places in Buffalo to relax at the bar with a good drink. It's the absolute opposite of pretentious and yet it's not a dive either. Instead, I feel like I'm sitting in a friend's kitchen. There are no judgments; people often come here by themselves and read or do homework, or they come with a bunch of loud friends and have a great time doing shots. People from all different walks of life frequent this bar with equal comfort and fun. The bartenders are truly some of the best in Buffalo and the beer selection is excellent (lots of bottles, not so many taps). I've discovered many beers here that quickly became new favorites. I don't love their food but some of it is decent. Because my food experience here has been inconsistent and at times downright bad, I tend to stick with drinks. I will continue to make this a regular drinking spot! read more
