We live in Dunedin and walked by this cafe at least 100 times and every time we say to each other "we need to try this place". We finally did last night. I had the bourbon salmon (a little over cooked) that was really good. Boyfriend got the chicken Marsala and he said it was really good. Desert was delicious. Waitress was friendly and on top of everything even though it was busy. We definitely will recommend this place and go again. read more

One of the WORST dining experiences we've ever had. Don't waste your time on this place! RUDE staff and the food bland and tasteless, low quality as well as overpriced. The bad service started when we walked in the door. We asked for a table for 6, they said it would be five minute but said we'd have to stand outside to wait. There was NO one else waiting but us, but they wouldn't accommodate us to wait inside. We were told the Fire Marshall was going to come fine them if we were standing inside. WHAT?! Right. Hostess and restaurant manager were rude. We got the four ladies with us a seat at the bar to wait at, while us two guys waited outside. The hostess and manager were talking about the rude customers right in front of us, and when we told them they were being rude they said oh, sorry. Our server was slow, inattentive and not very friendly at all. All this aside, we're hungry... So we got a table anyway to eat brunch. I had steak and eggs... It was horrible. Tasteless and half of my steak was still ice cold uncooked in the middle. I tried my girlfriends crab cake Benedict, it was OK. Nothing to brag about. This place is just not worth visiting. It's unfriendly, awkward and rude staff make for a VERY poor dining experience. Tie that to the horrible food and might as well just visit McDonald's. If you're going to b*tch about customers- do it in the back. That's so inappropriate" She looked surprised and apologized We ate breakfast- it was ok. Nothing amazing. I felt some uncomfortable in there because Dawn was lurking about. I had my husband hand out waiter my card BEFORE we got the check because I just wanted to pay and get the heck out of there. Our waiter proceeded to take another order before getting our check which was a bit frustrating because we wanted to leave ASAP. Our waiter was nice but the damage is done. I was kind enough to leave a $20 tip on $100 check, but we will never be back BECAUSE on the way out the door...DAWN said "goodbye have a nice day... The door wasn't even closed behind is when she remarked in her snarky and b*tchy tone... "Kill 'em with kindness" COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE - We were not disrespectful, we were not rude..we re just regular people trying to treat our friends to a nice meal Dawn, I hope you read this. Sat night dinner for three, arrived at 7pm. I was told by Alexander the wait would only be 10-15 min. The wait is only outside in the summer heat. 45 min later, we were seated even though I kept tell him that tables were open. He mentions some nonsense about a supposed system the have. Useless. We all had salads, mine was an uninspiring Cesar with two crab cakes. Our waiter was too busy to offer a dinner roll until we were almost done. Not very happy with the Meal, the service and the wait in the heat! I, will not go back. read more

Delicious! Shared a Cuban Sandwich with my husband, I really wanted to try one since we were in the bay area and neither one of us had ever had one. We ordered the seasoned fries instead of the potato salad. So glad we shared this dish, it was very large in size and plenty for both to eat. * Side Note* they do have a $3 split plate charge, which I actually think is outdated, because most people just want smaller portions now and I just think it's crazy that a restaurant will charge you $3 to split something. I mean after all, the happier the customer the more likely you will be to order a dessert or coffee and actually return, so hoping to maybe they reconsider the split charge fee. The restaurant is very area, and open, service was a little slow, had to wait a while for a refill and a check, but we are on vacation so wasn't in too big of a hurry. read more

It has a small bar right by the entrance, a tiny television just big enough to be able to see the scores, and a few small waiters. We've been having lunch/dinner over the years. Recently we've been disappointed not by the restaurant, but with the parking situation in the town of Dunedin. The last time we ate there was on the 16 of March 2017 @ 6:06 PM. My check says we were a party of three, served by Gary. We remember Gary but don't remember having a third guest. Capellini Pomodoro 11.99 and Tuna Special 17.95 Mine was excellent. I usually eat fish because it's so easy to cook. Café Alfresco has only once not cooked my fish correctly. I don't like to complain to any waiter about a meal. I just won't eat it or I'll just eat the pieces that are cooked well. Our waiter that day noticed the raw fish being dissected by me. Instead of waiting for me to complain he approached us, and apologized for the undercooked meal. He offered me a dessert on the house since I was already finished with the dissection. We've been patronizing this establishment for many years. That was the first time I hadn't enjoyed a meal. We continue to return to Dunedin and hope the parking situation is tweaked to improve relations with the visitors. I can't agree to have to pay every time I stop by in Dunedin. read more

Not a fan. Great location and service was good but food fell way short. Had the Thai sesame salmon salad. The cook must have hated my fish because it was way over cooked and dry. Also it was a spinach salad and I do think a restaurant has to do more than just throw spinach on a plate. It was all stems for the spinach. Wife's chicken salad was not cooked right and we sent it back. If you bring your kids the portions are more for a 5 year old or younger. My 8yr old laughed at the small pizza bread when it came out. Server said it would be enough. Won't be coming back. It is a shame. read more

Dunedin is in its own right, a marvelous upmarket village-e babulle. When renaming a biz, with the word 'Cafe' a guest will assume (rightfully) that beverage meet up's is not only appropriate, but also welcomed by the establishment, and a meal is not required nor should be expected. This is the case in point of Cafe Alfresco, whose kaki bermuda wearing crew obviously didn't get the memo as to the 'Cafe' part. I made it clear upon arrival to our server that the four of us were meeting for a coffee business meet up. The place was empty and I wrongly assumed our business would be welcomed. His shrug was one of obvious disappointment. He was qualifying us as a guest which immediately caused me to suggest we leave - but the others outvoted me. Attempting to be a good sport about it, I bit my wicked tongue and let his pathetic behavior slide, while we ordered beverages. Can't say his attention to our table was even good, because it wasn't. We were being punished with bad service. How very 'little' of him. His section remained empty, with the exception of two other tables. We went without water and refills. Finished our meeting and ordered, what I considered to be a nice round of appetizers. Again, we were snubbed with his dissatisfaction. How trite! Here is my point. Guests MUST or rather SHOULD enjoy spending their money. Even if its a dime. This little man, failed in provide good customer service in so many ways, which is why he qualifies for nothing more than one star on my review. Customer Service is a skill, a talent, a wiliness to perform over and above the call of duty, no matter what the tab ends up being. Most time I pass by Cafe Alfresco I can see the outdoor sun-room packed with senior citizens. I mistakenly thought it may serve food that are suitable for them. My senior neighbor invited me for lunch last week and she took me to Cafe Alfresco. Then I found out I was very very wrong on the food. Since it is my first time, I just ordered chicken soup and crab cakes. Both taste great! Soup is home made clear chicken broth with diced vege and crab cake is actually made of crab meat and little bread stuffing. My neighbor ordered lobster salad, a plate full of fruits and big chuck of lobster meat. I had a bite....um..... I order this one next time. Delicious. I want to be their regular customer. read more

We stumbled into this little eatery one afternoon with our whole family. After a little confusion about our table and how many chairs were required for 6 adults and 2 children, we were comfortably seated at a booth with an adjoining table. It was the weekend, so the place was jam packed. I expected a little delay in service standards since they were so busy, however, I was surprised to find we were accommodated fairly promptly. I ordered the tuna and was thoroughly happy with it's presentation and flavor. My husband enjoyed the grouper sandwich. He was very pleased with his sandwich. We were about to order dessert when my son awoke from his nap (in the carrier), so we decided to leave and get ice cream instead. Strangely they serve Asian and Italian food here. Closed at 10pm Saturday but let us in at 9:50. I got the ginger orange chicken and my husband got the Thai plate. I guess that was my first mistake but I was going for Gluten Free (my husband picked the restaurant :). My food was pretty bland and tasteless. The vegetables were overlooked and there was very little chicken to vegetable and sauce ratio. My husband enjoyed his Thai dish of rice, veggies and sauce. They also serve side salads with a delicious dressing, it seemed like a lemon raspberry combo. So for service, the delicious dressing and cleanliness, they get points. For the food, a 2 as it didn't taste gross, there just wasn't much taste. read more

My wife and I bring family and visiting friends to this restaurant. Always a great experience. However, there is always a bad day, even for a great restaurant. The lady working the front door, has obviously had a long morning. Trying to put in for reservation was an ordeal and quite frankly embarrassing. She was still being rude , as I left the line and while customers were waiting in line. Not that it matters, because we are just one customer, but hopefully management will at least help with the obviously over worked attendant. Maybe, it will keep other customers from having the same experience and not overshadow the normally great service and food. Poor service at least cost you one family of customers. read more

I came here with friends for brunch on a Sunday (late morning). Our waitress Brie was excellent - she was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I ordered a Peach Bellini and my fiancée ordered a Bloody Mary. As for food, I ordered the Trailblazer omelet with wheat bread and my fiancée ordered the Lobster Roll. The Bellini was delicious and had a yummy strawberry at the top. The Bloody Mary was also delicious. The Trailblazer omelet was well combined and extremely filling. The wheat toast was perfectly buttered and the home fries that came with the omelet were conveniently bite-sized (as opposed to the typical diced home fries). The Lobster Roll filling was good, but the bread was bland (not buttery or scrumptious as typical with lobster rolls). The fries that came with the lobster roll were perfectly crisp and did not even warrant ketchup, in my opinion. Overall, I would definitely recommend when in Dunedin! read more

Having already tried their delicious Eggs Benedict, I decided this time to try their Crab Benedict. WoW! This is a fabulous dish! The Hollandaise sauce is as one would want, a pleasing, slightly tangy flavor, over two poached eggs sitting on top of crab cakes (instead of the traditional English muffins). Very very tasty. And, typically, I must use a fork and knife to cut through the muffin. Not so with the crab cakes. Fork slides right through allowing sauce, egg and crab to be scooped easily. The potatoes were good but they are simply sliced potatoes with no added spices or flavors that I could taste. That said, I was definitely pleasingly full when I left. The coffee is tasty and completes this great meal. The crab bene is two bucks more than the traditional bene but, if you enjoy crab, you should give this a try. read more

Once again, I'm diggin' the alfresco scene here. I've had great breakfasts but joined neighbors for dinner last night. The pre-dinner drink was a martini with tangerine vodka and peach schnapps. I was in the mood for something light and fresh so this satisfied my taste. I started dinner with a cup of the homemade chicken soup. Full of chicken and veggies, served hot, and was a perfect opener. The salad had a delicious raspberry vinaigrette. For the main course, I was in the mood for a half order of Eggplant Parmesan. It was just a perfect portion as I had already hit the basics. The rolls, fresh and hot, added to a hearty intake. A nice glass of the house Pinot Grigio complemented dinner nicely. My chicken soup could have used some pizazz. But the pork egg rolls in an orange sauce made up for that. Usually and appetizer, I opted it for my entrée. My wife got the Steak Giovanni. A NY strip med rare with prosciutto and provolone on top, in a Marsala sauce. Broccolini a little under cooked but she really enjoyed the horseradish mashed potatoes. Decent prices, good portions. Heard all the hype and praise about Cafe Alfresco. The service was good, hence the one star. Beyond that, the food was bland and needed to be seasoned (salt & pepper-Cooking 101) in the worst way. My girlfriend and I both got egg white omelets, and they were yellow from the grease, and the potatoes tastes like plain potatoes sliced grilled and thrown onto a plate. Being in downtown Dunedin with many GREAT restaurants, Cafe Alfresco is in the minority of being a less than mediocre restaurants. read more

I was in town for work and ate dinner there. My waitress Anne was great and recommended I come back the next night for the seafood boil. She showed me a picture on an iPad of the specials. The food actually came out looking just like the photo, which is rare. Excellent service. Great food. The seafood boil was amazing ~ it is rare to be served more seafood than you can eat, especially for $14.99! Reason I am giving a bad review is because, we are seniors & we always give a good tip in cash over 20%. However, I always check to make sure they charge the correct amount. They gave themselves another 20% tip. Not good at all I have disputed the charge. I always write paid cash on tip line. DONT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SENIORS. We've been wanting to try this place for quite sometime but there was always a long wait and was always crowded. Perhaps I was hoping for more than I should of because of their loyal following but I just found it average and prices slightly modest to high. Service was friendly and good. The manager also comes around asking how everything was or is and is friendly. The food wasn't bad but wasn't great. Pastrami sandwich was fairly overlooked to the point it was like beef jerky I like crisp pastrami but that was a little too much. Also they did not serve it with mustard on or on the side which was strange. The potato salad seemed homemade and fresh but needed some kick like mustard seed or celery. I have the feeling they cater to bland customers. GF got the salmon Asian salad. Fish was good but salad was completely overdressed to the point it was almost a soup. Not too much wowed me on their menu and will be in no rush to be back. Nothing horrible but nothing that would make me crave going back. read more
