I can't find much good to say about this place. It didn't appear that busy when we sat down for dinner but we waited an inordinate amount of time to be greeted and have drink orders taken. After that, they rushed the food out so that there was about 2" between salad and entree. Had always heard good things about this place. Wife and I spent an afternoon checking out the shops in the near downtown area. Decided to have lunch here. I had the Cuban sandwich and bean soup. Everything was great until I noticed a 6 inch hair in my husband's parmigiana. It was absolutely disgusting. We informed our waiter and he asked us if we wanted another one... we said no. We have been visiting the Dunedin area since our daughter moved there 15 years ago. This is my go-to choice for a consistent and good meal. They have a full bar and good desserts, their menu varies but I've never had a bad meal there. The staff is friendly and never mind if you only drop in for their wonderful coffee. Our last lunch there was great, as usual. I had the lobster sandwich. Lots of real lobster on a fresh roll with their batter-dipped fries on the side. Save room for dessert. I had the key lime pie, which may be common in Fla. But only a few do it well, and they do! My grandson had the Caesar salad with chicken and they do the mix and dressing right. My husband had the Al Fresco burger. He likes it med.rare to rare and they actually did it properly. There are many places to choose from in the area, but I've found they are consistently good and that's speaking for many years of eating there. read more

I'm a fanatic for corn beef hash from scratch. This is hands down the best I have ever had Big chunks of moist meat mixed with potatoes, topped with perfectly poached eggs and a dollop of Hollandaise sauce. Patrick the bartender, while making a refreshing Spicy Bloody Mary suggested the hash as it was not on the menu. Super friendly guy also suggested his favorite local brewery which we tried and were not disappointed.We will return! read more

I came in this afternoon around 4 pm for tea and the chocolate bread pudding, just a light snack. Seating was fine and the waiter came right over. Everyone was pleasant but the restaurants wasn't busy so don't read too much into that. There was no selection of tea. They have 1 black tea. No green tea. No herbal tea. The black tea was fine but no selection seemed strange. The bread pudding was extreme dessert style with thick pudding and perhaps some bread crumbs mixed in. It is really a baked chocolate cake in individual cups with a soft center not the old fashioned Deep South style baked in a big baking pan with real pieces of bread and crust that are still observable in the piece of bread pudding. It was much too sweet for my taste, nearly a double chocolate cake or something of that sort. I ate a few bites and left about 75% of the dish. Response to the Business Manager's statements. I made factual statements about the tea and bread pudding. The Bus manager offered to to tell me where there are good tea places in Dunedin and then stated the restaurant had made the bread pudding the same way for 15 years. This is peculiar since I didn't ask for advice on where to eat in Dunedin. I just stated what you get at Cafe Alfresco. While I might have been willing to try the place again before his response, I cannot see doing so now. read more

Why five stars, well first of all we have been going to this place for years and years and I cannot believe I have not reviewed them, but back to the five star rating , the reason is because they just do it right all the time, no matter what we have ordered its always fresh, presented well, Service is always right on the spot, the decor is very comforting, the location is excellent, you have the choice to sit inside or patio or outside all the way outside! The fish is always fresh, I mean always fresh, we have been to many other places and when you get a fish dish many times it will be good one time and then the next time you could smell it coming, but as I say they always do it right here, they also have a full bar so you can order drinks or if you'd rather have a beer, and the prices are very fair for what you get, the portions are generous, but the main thing is it taste very very good, and that's what matters They are not a Italian restaurant but I have had some of the best chicken Parham there as opposed to some other Italian restaurants, the sesame salmon is excellent, many of the desserts they have are made in house and even the ones that are not are all very very good. So back to the five star rating, I give them this because of the amount of times we've been there and every time everything is right on, and in my book that's how you get five stars is to be consistent over time everything being correct for the type of place that it is. read more

We were recently here on a visit to the area and staying fairly close to this "downtown Dunedin" spot. I hadn't been here for a number of years but remembered having a good dining experience. This time---not so much. My husband ordered crab cakes which were good and lightly breaded and sautéed. Two of us ordered a cup of Chicken and sausage Gumbo and Caesar Salad. The Gumbo was very good and had just the right amount of spice. The Caesar Salad was just OK. My sister-in-law ordered Lobster Salad and was disappointed. I tasted it and understood why. The lobster meat looked like mostly claw meat and was barely seasoned and very bland. This restaurant always seems busy and it is reflected in the service. The server appeared rushed and in a hurry. It wasn't the most relaxing environment and there isn't a good flow between the kitchen area and the dining area. It's popular with tourists so it stays busy. I probably wouldn't come back to eat here. read more

The service was great. The portions are sensible. I ordered a side salad and the shrimp scampi pasta. It was fine but, not great. The sauce was a bit bland and there was a ton of garlic that was really hard. I would have preferred it have been sautéed a bit longer and more wine added to the sauce or lemon , something more . I grabbed lunch here with a friend and it was pretty good. Staff is friendly and service was good. The food wasn't very memorable but it wasn't bad either. My friend and i got the same vegetables and mine tasted terrible and fishy even though she was the one that ordered fish. Our waitress took too long to come back though so I just ate my sandwich and had no side. I would go back again but it's not my first choice. 1 star for the employees, 1 star for the atmosphere/view and a star for the rest of the food. read more

Although this place is small, it puts out a good vibe! We aren't always seated right away because of they do get busy, but it's worth the wait. From the minute you walk in, professionalism! Ryen was our server. She is very personable, always quick and anticipates our needs. The desserts are very tasty and they'll package them for you to have later at home. Happened by there this weekend purely by chance since it was near the only parking spot available on Main st. So glad we stopped here for lunch! Our feta appetizer was amazing! The iced tea was cold and refreshing. The chicken curry was wonderful, with crunchy fresh veggies and plenty of curry sauce. Good sized portions too! Two entrees, an appetizer and two beverages cost $34. Server was attentive and friendly. Restroom was clean. Can't wait to bring the family here again...this time I'll make sure to leave room for dessert, the selection looked heavenly. Loved the casual atmosphere, inside and out. We have lived in Downtown Dunedin for almost six years, and until a few weeks ago, Cafe Alfresco has been one of my favorite places to dine. Loved the food, and the friendly, but unobtrusive service. In the past week, I have been to the restaurant twice, and been disappointed mostly with the server. Different each time, but both new to me. Both visits were with friends, wanting to catch up with one another. During the first visit, our server was not unpleasant, or inefficient, but her treatment of us felt as if we were at a truck stop, rather than a Cafe'. Hopefully, she will develop a bit of polish soon. Five days later, I was back, and hopeful we would get a different server, for this group of three. We did, and she was a bit better, but still lacked what almost every other server has had in the numerous times we have been to Cafe Alfresco. I have to wonder if someone new is doing the hiring. Will I go back? Yes. The food is usually very good! I just won't look forward to it as much, or want to go as often, and neither will our friends. read more

Well, The assumption you make when you see the setting, menu, area, is that you are about to have a wonderful food experience too. Not so much. We ordered a basic Italian staple, Chicken Parmesan, and well let me just say, it stunk. The sauce tastes out of a jar, the cheese is low grade. They put the dish in a broiler drawer to melt the cheese and obviously do not keep an eye on it because when it arrived it was uncooked on one side and crunchy on the other. YES, CRUNCHY! I have never had crunchy chicken parm - gross! But what was worse is the fact that they left the fatty cartilage in the chicken, which totally ruins the meal for me. We were a group of 13 and went on a Wednesday afternoon at 1pm in September 2017. There was some confusion because although they took a reservation (and we reconfirmed that morning), when we got there they said they never take reservations. As a result we needed to break the group in two and sit apart from each other. The food was good, I had the Hawaiian Chicken Salad. Clean & friendly (after the initial scuffle about reservations was resolved). We lingered for about an hour and a half. We may have stayed a little longer but they don't serve between lunch and dinner so they wanted to clear the tables. There are so many good places in the Dunedin area it will be a long time until we return here. If I do return it will definitely not be with a group larger then four people. read more

I was very unimpressed, especially given all the rave reviews. My boyfriend and I had never been and thought we would try the Sunday brunch. I got the Greek omelet with egg whites and him the bacon and cheddar omelet with egg whites. Everything was pretty bland. Our egg whites weren't exactly white. They were yellow from grease. The potatoes were entirely tasteless. Very little effort put forth. Even the coffee was bland, and I am speaking as an avid coffee drinker. One star is for the service only. Our service was very slow and unimpressive (we have multiple kids in our party and it takes us asking ten minutes into having been seated to find out there is a kids' menu? we need to inform the server of the night's special that is advertised on the board out on the sidewalk?). Was the kitchen backed up or was our server just sleepwalking? Hard to tell. What I do know is that an hour and forty five minutes is wayyyy too long for a party of simple orders to get from start to finish. The food wasn't bad (other than my wife's 'medium' steak, which was med-well or well), but it wasn't special. It was fine. Hey, not every restaurant needs to press the envelope with creativity -- Cafe Alfresco is pretty focused on tried and true classics, prepared in a very standard way. But it was all just 'meh' -- and for me, that brings up the question: why would I choose to come back here when I could go somewhere else? It all just seemed like the owners opted for very plain vanilla ideas out of the USFoodservice or Sysco menu book. I went back to Cafe Alfresco after another bike ride on the trail. This time I ordered the home made corned beef has with eggs and hollandaise sauce. My wife had a blueberry muffin and that was actually tasty as well. I was much more impressed with the food during this visit. I was also much more impressed by the wait staff. On this visit we had a server that was very attentive and friendly. I'm not going to give Cafe Alfresco another star because I'm still not sure it is a 4 star deal. With that said if you are on the trail and in Dunedin it wouldn't be a bad deal to stop here for breakfast. read more
