We went to Cafe Caspian for dinner on a Sunday night because I had seen pictures and the restaurant looked beautiful. And truly the restaurant was really nice. It was also huge if you wanted to do private parties and had several smaller rooms. Houston has some really strong Persian restaurants so I wanted to see if it staked up. For appetizer we got the eggplant dip. For entrees we ordered the lamb chops, beef kobideh, and chicken kababs. For the rice we substituted with jawaher pullow. The food was not seasoned well and was extremely bland. Compared to other restaurants such as Bijan and Kasra, the prices were higher too. This restaurant was a staple when I was growing up. Then it moved out farther than I wanted to drive, and I stopped going. Well, last weekend we had a giant family lunch there. There were about 20 of us, and we ordered family style platters. The platters arrived beautifully presented. Heaping piles of various types of rice and kabobs. Everything was delicious. My favorites were the white rice with albaloo [cherry] topping, koobideh [ground beef kabob], chicken chenjeh [ grilled chunks of breast] and beef barg [thinly sliced beef]. As my in-laws are Persian I consider myself in the know! This place has the best Persian food in the Houston area. The staff are well informed,hospitable & are always willing to offer great suggestions. Should you wish to practice your Farsi skills most of the employee are happy to oblige! It's clean & the decor is filled with Persain rugs but the main attraction is the taftoon oven station. It's a clay oven that they use to cook the bread,it's very similar to a tandoori oven. They start you off with freshly baked taftoon bread,feta cheese,fresh basil,radishes & raw onions for free when you order an entree. If you are a group of 4 or more people I strongly suggest you try a few of the appetizers. The kashk-e-bademjan (eggplant dip),hummus & the mast-o khiyar (my favorite) are absolutely delicious. The gheymeh,koresh-e bademjan & the ghormeh sabzi are staples in Persian cooking however I find my mother in-law's stews much better so I'll take a pass. The koobideh (ground beef),the barg (filet) & the soltani (a combo of koobideh & barg) are originally beef and/or lamb & that's how they should be eaten. If you're going to get the chicken then just get something else. The other major hit with my family is the mahiceh (lamb shank),they substitute the sbazi polow (herb basmati rice with fava beans,it's really good) for the albalu polow (cherry rice). If you want something light the tilapia is flavorful as well. My favorite dessert is the saffron ice cream with pistachios,the taste is undescribable & makes your taste buds pleasantly surprised. We usually finish off with some hot tea to help with digestion! They do offer wine if you are interested in ordering any. I frequented this place a couple of years ago and had their chicken soltani that came with white basmati rice and grilled tomatoes. I thought it was okay compared to the oh-so-awesome chicken shawarma from Phoenicia's Deli that was located directly across the street. The dish was very meaty, meaning that the veggies to chicken ratio wasn't very proportional, and the chicken was dry. I told myself that I'd never go back for that again. Phoenicia's Deli all the way! Just recently, my team wanted to try this place out for lunch since they've never been. Since I didn't want to be a Debbie Downer, I agreed to go. This time, I ordered the eggplant stew with chicken. My thought was that if the chicken was dry again, at least the tomato sauce would mask it. The dish came with a plate of white basmati rice, and it was pretty tasty. The portion size was pretty big since the plate of rice was huge; whereas, the bowl of stew was decently sized. Overall, I thought it was pretty good, and it made me have second thoughts about this restaurant. I guess everyone does deserve a second chance. However, I wouldn't recommend the grilled meat dishes, but I do recommend the stew. If you want to upgrade your basmati rice by getting the toppings, I highly recommend it as well. Just make sure it doesn't clash with your stew (or whatever entree you choose to get). There is plenty of parking since this restaurant is located in a shopping center. Unlike other Persian/Iranian restaurants you can order some of the stews such as Ghormeh-Sabzi as a vegetarian option. Because of this my husband and I started coming here instead of Kasra since he was a vegetarian and otherwise ended up eating hummus and rice. I always get the Ghormeh Sabzi, a stew with beef, various greens such as spinach, fenugreek, dried lemons, kidney beans, etc. It's fragrant and comforting. The soltani has the Kubideh kabob and Barg options together and this is generally a good option if you want both. The table has sabzi (greens such as mint), radishes, onions, and feta and fresh baked bread which you can watch being baked at the back of the restaurant. I've always passed by this place but never went in until few friends and I went to this place for a celebration for my early birthday lunch. If your looking for Persian food, you should come here. It's delish! My guy friend is Persian and it was really nice listening to him talk to the waitress. My little brother and I had the lamb chop which was very yummy! The meat fell off the bone and it was cooked perfect!. My girl friend got the chicken chenjeh and my Persian friend got the beef chenjeh. Everything was so good that we finished our plates. LOL! First time trying Persian/Iranian food and it was really good. Although this place is a little pricey, it was totally worth it to me (I got two meals out of what I ordered). I got to try the khoubedih (I'm probably spelling all of these wrong but it's off memory haha), Soltana (included the barg as well), and the Tu por. They give out freshly made bread, similar to pita bread along with feta cheese and some fresh herbs (mint, basil, etc.). You can also ask for butter if you like. We did so we can mix our rice because it makes the rice even better (although basmati rice alone is good enough to me). The meat was very flavorful and tender but the chicken was better in all the dishes (we ordered combination for all). It was also a bit juicy and my dish (the Tu por) was delicious. It's beef and chicken that is grilled and wrapped around cheese, basil and jalapenos and it's my favorite out if everything I tried. Looking forward to coming back. I did try the saffron ice cream and was not a fan, but I'm confident thats due to my taste buds. It's VERY fragrant and im not too huge on that so if you are, that's the way to go. Great restaurant! My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for quite some time now. My two favorite dishes must have to be the Mahicheh (Lamb Shank) and the Tu Por (Stuffed Kabob). Great Persian (Iranian) food. Let's start with the ambience. This is a very classy establishment and no expense spared on the new layout. Great ambience and decor. The place is large and not to noisy. They can accommodate large parties as well. Let's get down to the food. As appetizers we order the moosir and dolmeh which are both vegetarian and enjoyed with the fresh compliment bread. For my meal I order the Koobideh as it's probably the most common dish. The ghormeh sabzi is also really good and tasty. These are the dishes we always repeat, however you are welcome to try their combinations as well. The restaurant is beautiful and it might have been remodeled as I noticed a beautiful curved bar, chandeliers and other beautiful touches. I ordered vegetarian fesenjan which is the stewed pomegranate with walnuts. It was delicious. But why is it only $1 less than the fesenjan with chicken? Shouldn't we get more of a price break without chicken? Also, apparently the hot tea comes with free refills but I never was offered more tea nor sugar cubes. I did see photos of the restaurant on Yelp and they supposedly have sugar cubes. The warm bread served in a basket is really good. I don't know what it's called but it's similar to pita bread, just a bit thicker. I have to give credit to my waitress Neda because she really worked hard going back and forth serving lots of us. They added a 20 percent tip to each of our bills. I don't believe it should have been more than 18 percent. 20 percent is one fifth of the food bill. I find it steep. read more

Caspian is a little easy to miss tucked away in a beautiful plaza with vines growing on the walls. The interior is absolutely gorgeous with a lot of art and painted mosaics on the ceiling. I enjoyed my stew which had melt in your mouth beef cubes and a tomato based sauce. The rice was fluffy and tasted pretty good. The free pita with goat cheese was great and you can see them making it in the oven in the back. This place really reminds me of Kasara just with less people for about the same price. Lunch is a bit pricey with entrees ranging from $12-20. Only downside is the service. Not sure if we had a new waitress, but I had to practically jump up and wave my arms to get attention. Luckily, the manager was there and came over after a while. This was my first experience at a Persian restaurant, but I loved it here! I think that Cafe Caspian is a beautiful beautiful space. I love the detail in the decoration, the open floor, the opulent embroidery, the attentive staff. As for the food, every table should get a complimentary appetizer which is (I'm sorry for not knowing the Persian names) fresh warm pita bread and a plate of feta(?) cheese cubes and mint leaves and radishes and other herbs that you're supposed to eat with the pita. This is my first time having such an appetizer, but I really enjoyed it! I found it to be very refreshing and such a great palate cleanser. As for my main dish, I ordered the beef koobideh. It was a huge portion! It came with two beef "kebabs" that were incredibly flavorful, a little on the dry side, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And you have the choice of rice + grilled tomato + onion or a Persian salad which is like diced up cucumbers and onions with a dressing. I thought the rice was well-made, and I loved the grilled onion and tomato. It complimented the meat and rice so well, especially the tomato, which was still juicy and gave the meat and rice a bit of tenderness to it. Overall, I had a great time at Cafe Caspian and was super excited to have a new cultural experience.
