Cafe Coda is really a great breakfast spot. My boyfriend had the Applewood Sausage Hash. The best part was the sausage, which came from one of our favorite places to get sandwiches, the Chico Meat Locker. Both were really good, but the Coda Benedict was really the star. It came on top of house made parmesean crusted foccacia with spinach, ham, and poached eggs smothered in a bearnaise sauce. I was slightly surprised to see the use of a bearnaise sauce than the traditional hollandaise sauce, but I was not disappointed. The bearnaise was wonderfully herby and flavorful. If you go to Cafe Coda, I definitely recommend the Coda Benedict. They also have some great teas there too. Can't wait to go back! -We went a second time and my boyfriend got the Fat Boy and absolutely loved it. He loved how all the flavors of ingredients complemented each other. Although next time he wants to try to substitute the bacon for chorizo. To sum it up- I LOVE THIS PLACE. If I want to go out to breakfast, I go here. No questions asked. It is by far the best breakfast I have had in Chico. Update: Tried the chicken pesto sandwich for lunch, and it is AWESOME. Got it with the soup of the day, the first time they had tomato soup which paired great with the sandwich. The second time was a baked potato soup, which was tasty, but felt a little heavy with the sandwich. The sandwich itself is huge for me, I usually take half of it home. Just a great sandwich with bacon, chicken, pesto, mozz, and shallot aioli. Now it's a really hard choice of lunch or breakfast. Oh and lunch is only served on the weekdays. read more

I would give this place a half star or more....But I haven't been there enough. The coffee is really good...They serve it in a french press and if you are patient...it is excellent. I love breakfast potatoes...and these are ok....but they are not as freshly prepared or served as hot as Sin of Cortez, which is our standard. The Eggs Benedict are like any other you will find in Chico....Lame ham....english muffin not completely toasted...hollandaise saice just like Knorr made. Still a go-to place for me. Went on Memorial Day 2014. Service good to great. Had 2 egg dishes split 3 ways plus French press coffee and one tea. I go here whenever I can. Had the Chilaquiles and the Pesto 3 eggs dish. Next time I'll have the eggs benedict or Florentine instead of Chilaquiles. Our bill was about $30. The food was good to excellent. Evidently, Cafe Coda has expanded to a second room with carpet,,,, That room was more quiet than the front room which has, I believe, cement floors. Chair to table height in the back was odd, nothing felt comfortable. Either too high or too low, but a minor point, I felt like Goldilocks...didn't find my just right fit. Very good. Stumbled across this place on yelp due to the current location feature & was not disappointed. Very cute and hipster cafe. The place as full, but the wait wasn't bad at all. Lots of seating/waiting space. The service was good & food came out surprisingly quick. The servers aren't overly involved which I like aside from needing refills. The food was flavorful and fresh. They have a vegan menu and many items on regular menu can be substituted to be made vegan. The portions are rather large, which was a relief given the kinda pricey menu. I try to get something different each time I come. I don't have a favorite dish because it's all yummy. It's always hard to decide what to try next. First time here, very very good food, portion was just right. The place is not built as a restaurant, or it was some sort of bar/nightclub turned into a restaurant. Odd arrangement. Front door comes right into dining area. Hallways and side rooms abound. Enough on environment/ambience. I had Chilaquiles and my wife had a hash of some kind. Both were excellent! My wife had fresh baked brioche which was also top shelf. Coffee was very good but small carafe was not adequate for two people, maybe enough for one shy coffee drinker. Recommend the large carafe for starters. Noise was an issue for me. May have been two ladies next to us who didn't realize how loud they were. Or maybe it's just how loud you're entitled to be when you eat here. Either way for me it was too loud. I'd like to go back for the food but it'll probably be a third choice behind Moms and Morning Thunder due to the noise. But based on food alone it would be a #1 contender for me. read more

I am the only vegan in the group and it was really nice having vegan options available on the menu.. and really good options at that. We all enjoyed the food and the service was on point. This restaurant had good intention, but the food missed the mark for me. We tried the: -lemon poppyseed pancakes: beautifully plated, but the flavoring was just blah for me. And I like my pancakes to be a bit less soggy. -oatmeal: disappointing and sort of dry, but I rarely expect oatmeal to be good at restaurants. I just had a particular craving that day, so I thought I'd give it a try. -the fruit bowl: good!! It was a bit expensive, but you get your money's worth. Nicely cut fruit with a good variety. Although, the kiwis weren't ripe yet. -Coda Benedict: Served on delicious bread, this Benedict is much better than your average! The potatoes were okay, but some of them were really UNDERCOOKED! That's unacceptable. Just because they have a sear on them, does not mean they are cooked through! That's a careless mistake. I liked that the coffee was french press, but it also limits how much you're able to consume. You don't get endless refills like at other brunch places. read more

As somebody in my party said: "Damn, those hipsters know how to cook!" This place is a charm in Chico! Went here one morning...well, afternoon...for brunch with a group of friends and every dish we ordered was delicious! I know this, of course, because I enjoy sharing plates with others, whether or not people agree to it :) This restaurant is a music club in the evenings and looks like a really cool place to play or watch a show. Our pancakes were adorned with a cute lil Treble Clef made of some sort of rasberry sauce (Refer to my photos). The service was great and it had kind of a San Francisco-esque feel to it minus the heinous waiting time and the overly-pretentious hipsters (these hipsters were not pretentious) Food Run Down: Lemon Poppyseed Pancakes: Nice and fluffy, with a zing to it. I liked them because they were unique, but my friend Jay wasn't a fan--try em out and see for yourself :) Chilequiles: AMAZING--good large serving, full of flavor. Coda Benedict: Cafe Coda's take on eggs benedict, except they had theirs on Foccacia bread and "bearnaise" sauce, which is kind of like hollandaise sauce except with an herb-y essence...This whole dish had an herb-y essence, which worked for me! (We later decided that these "herbs" were directly contributive to our euphoric feelings following our trip here...take that how you wish.) Banana Nutella French Toast: Travis got just one slice of this (which came out in two slices) and it was amazingly delicious and exremely rich, so I don't recommend getting anything more than a single serving of this to share because it is suuuuper rich/sweet. Good for a bite or two. Breakfast sandwich: It was good--your typical eggs, cheese, avocado on cheesy bread--it was bland compared to the rest of our intense-ly flavorful meal but it was only $5 so hey, not complaining Cheers to Chico-ian hipsters with great personalities and amazing skills in the kitchen. As a recent chico state grauate I was surprised I had never heard of this place! I walked in and instantly knew I was in for a good experience. They have french pressed coffee and a very nice selection of teas. My waitress recommended an awesome tea to me and I love it. I ordered the coda Benedict and it was amazing! My daughter attends Chico State and my mom and I moved her into her new apartment last weekend (Senior Year!). I've eaten at quite a few places in Chico but only a few for Breakfast since it's generally free at the hotel. But we were heading back to San Jose so I wanted to take my baby girl out before we left. I've had Café Coda Bookmarked for forever but the last time we were in town we went to Mom's and I was really disappointed. Café Coda is easy to miss but worth the search. YUM! Comfy cozy place with friendly service and great food. Here's what we had: Mom: Banana Walnut Pancakes with a side of vegan sausage. Sausage was not that great but the Pancakes were HUGE and fluffy and oh so yummy. Daughter: Take Five which is your basic breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon and toast. She got the wheat toast and it was amazing. Truly AMAZING. Me: Little Donkey which is sort of like a deconstructed Huevos Rancheros. Very fresh and flavorful. The tortilla were great and filled with cheese so that was a pleasant surprise. Over all we left full and ready for the 4 hour drive home. The only thing I didn't care for was their coffee. It comes in a French press and it's way to strong for my taste. But I'm sure there are many folks who just love it. Already looking forward to bring my hubby here on the next visit. read more

My favorite brunch spot in Chico. I always question why people have never been here because it's a Chico staple. My favorite is the Eggs Blackstone! Delicious food, perfect portion sizes. Price is a little up there but I don't mind since it's always a treat to go. The wait is usually around 25 minutes, which is not fun but the food is always worth the wait. Another complaint of mine is the noise level, it's hard to have a conversation, but it's understandable since the restaurant is very popular (especially on weekends). Love this place. Hope it never closes. Would 10/10 bring family or friends here that are visiting Chico. 100x better than Morning Thunder, Jacks, or Moms. read more

Places like these are what keeps Chico, Chico! I'm not a fan of chain restaurants (except Starbucks) so if you enjoy fresh cooked food, this is your place. I went with the Greek Egg Plate and it was just what I was after. It came with eggs, artichoke hearts, feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes - really good and not greasy. It also came with soft pita bread and the potatoes. Potatoes were excellent - not greasy with a nice crunchy exterior and soft creamy interior. The pancakes are light and fluffy and don't have the bisquick taste. They even serve you warm syrup. They do details right here! Lemon poppy seed pancakes w/a flavorful butter are also delicious. Prices were in keeping with quality. The latte was much better than Starbucks. Others ordered the Nutella French toast, I had a few bites and it was very good. I do want to note that we ordered the Nutella FT on an earlier visit and they brought us 5 orders of the orange/cranberry french toast instead of the Nutella ordered and they took it back to the kitchen and just spread nutella and bananas on it - which wasn't good at all! Awful mix of flavors. The place was crowded but they should have remade the FT so that is a big minus but other than that experience- excellent reviews all around. They have some great art on the walls of places in Chico at unbelievable prices! Don't miss it. Go with the pressed coffee, it is excellent. Service is very good and friendly (with the exception above). Cool hip staff. Menu and food reminds me of Sin of Cortez. Which is fine because this town is big enough for both! I was super bummed today because cafe coda has traditionally been my favorite place, but it was hard to enjoy because the service was just bad. The waitress was okay, but the overall experience was just really disappointing. We were told 25 minutes to be seated and it took an hour, which was fine because that happens. But then we got in and took them another hour to serve us. A table of 10 was seated after and served before us in addition to another table of 2. When our food finally did come it wasn't hot anymore and one of our dishes was wrong and several of our requests were forgotten about - and how long it took made the food hard to enjoy. We felt frustrated and unprioritized and left to see the entire dining room was empty. I know things are taking some adjusting with reopening, so hopefully I can go back soon and have a different experience. read more

My favorite breakfast in Chico. I'd practically visit just to eat here! Four of us shared the plates (Breakfast Burrito, Fat Boy, Coda Benedict, Poppyseed Pancakes) and all agreed that everything was fresh, flavorful and delicious. One dish I won't order again is the poppy seed lemon pancakes unless they add lemon or raspberry curd as a topping instead of maple syrup which just masks the fruity taste. I went here on a recent trip to Chico for breakfast with a few girlfriends. One of the girls found it on yelp, so we decided to try it. We were pleasantly surprised. We were there on a Sunday morning, and were seated right away. We must have just beat the rush, because as soon as we sat down, several parties came in. It seemed like a pretty popular spot. Once we got our food, we understood why!! We skipped the mimosas this time, and opted for coffee. They brought a french press to the table, and the coffee was great! I've only recently become a coffee drinker, but I really enjoyed theirs. There wasn't a single complaint about the food. I had buttermilk pancakes that were delicious, two of the girls had the nutella and banana french toast, that I had to try...so good!!! And my last friend had some other specialty pancakes that I can't seem to remember now...but everything tasted great! The only complaint we had was the restroom. One of the girls went in and said it was extremely dirty. She said that someone had thrown up in the sink and it hadn't been cleaned. Now to give the staff the benefit of the doubt, maybe it had just happened and they were still unaware, but it was still pretty gross. Best coffee in chico hands down-- hard to find a coffee shop that ACTUALLY has quality coffee in chico, imagine my suprise when a sit down cafe had better quality (and better mimosas) than most businesses who's sole practice is selling coffee. By far some of the best breakfast food in chico as well-- get the 'Fat Boy' you wont regret it, also its really hard to find people who actually know how to season black beans well, and cafe coda does that! Tried Cafe Coda while visiting my daughter at the University. She and I shared the Coda Benedict and the Nutella strawberry French toast. Both were excellent. The holendaise sauce was incredible. I highly recommend any of the Benedicts. The French toast was great too. I'm really picky about breakfast potatoes and theirs are great. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside...
