I really wanted to enjoy this place, but overall the experience was frustrating and confusing. Right when we arrived, there was no hostess, and it wasn't clear if we were supposed to wait to be seated or order first. The sign says to wait for a hostess, but no one came. When we went to the register, we were asked if the order was "to go" or "for here," and when we answered, the employee made us feel kind of stupid by basically saying we were supposed to just grab a table ourselves. If that's how it works, they really need clearer signage or better communication because it was not obvious at all. Once we were seated, the waitress constantly came over every couple of minutes asking if everything was okay. I understand she was trying to be attentive, but it became excessive and kept interrupting both our conversation and our meal. The worst part was the ending. When we split our receipt, my friend decided to add something onto her order, and the waitress told us it was no problem and even said she'd split it a certain way to make it easier. What she failed to mention was that the kitchen was already closed. We waited around 30 minutes for the food, and my friend finally had to go ask what was going on. The person she spoke to started arguing with her and insisting we already received it, even though the receipt clearly showed it was supposed to be to-go. After several minutes of back and forth, someone from the kitchen came out, apologized, and offered to still make the food, which we appreciated -- but by that point the situation had already been unnecessarily stressful. This was not our fault, and it could've been avoided if we were simply told the kitchen was closed. To make things worse, the waitress who took the order and cashed us out was nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, the ending completely soured the experience and I don't think we'll be returning. read more

I have heard a lot about this Cafe de la Abuela and wanted to give this place a try. Today was my first time going there, but definitely not the last. When I walked in, I noticed how well all the employees were with their customers and how chill the ambiance was. It has outdoor and indoor seating. The place was very clean and medium sized. Very quaint and beautiful. I chose to sit inside since it was hot on the patio. Destiny was my server and she came to take my order. I ordered french toast topped with berries and lots of whipped cream. I also got their medium size Iced Cold Frappe Cafe De Olla. Got a nicely sized breakfast burrito and asked for the bacon to be very crispy. Destiny brought out my food fast and quick. 10/10. Food was delicious, bacon was nicely crisped and they have a great sized parking lot shared with other businesses. They also do pick up/delivery/catering and 3rd party orders! My wife and I came to have breakfast here because I saw their social media video and mention it to my wife. This place has a private parking lot in the back that is shared with other businesses or you can do street parking. We did the street parking across the street. When we came, they were busy but not too bad. They let us choose if we wanted indoor or outdoor seating and my wife chose outdoor. I got the breakfast burrito with bacon and my wife got the chilaquiles with red sauce and green sauce. For my drink, I got a cola in a glass bottle and my wife got her cafe de olla. Our food came out quick, like right after our waiter came back with our drinks. The problem if you sit outside is the flies so be aware. I thought the burrito was okay and their sauce was mild in term of spicy. My wife like her chilaquiles and cafe de olla too. We came to Cafe de Abuela for breakfast, but they were so flexible that I ended up ordering from the lunch menu. I had two gorditas--one asada and one papa con chorizo--and both were delicious. My husband ordered several sides since he's watching his calories, and my daughter loved the waffle and regular horchata. I also tried a hot latte with a pump of sugar-free vanilla, which was the perfect complement to the meal. The service was superb, and the ambiance was absolutely charming. The space is beautifully decorated with vintage mirrors, pink floral accents, and thoughtful details that make it feel warm and inviting. I hate having to give a lower rating came in yesterday because I wanted coffee for my self and my mom since it was a chilly day. My mom only drinks decaf coffee for health reasons. We ordered and were told while waiting for our drinks they were all out of decaf. Had to go back to the counter for my refund, I asked if we can switch to another item and tried getting a agua Fresca. There's a list of I believe 5 in the menu. Staff told us some are season, but for sure had the top 3 so my mom chose one. He came back to tell us they didnt have it either. I remember this spot when it used to be Horchatería Río Luna, so it was nice to come back and see it now as Café de la Abuela while still keeping those Latino vibes. The first time I tried their food was when my friend ordered the chilaquiles and honestly, they were amazing and left a great impression, which made me want to return for breakfast. Today I stopped by a bit later in the day (around closing time), so the kitchen was already closed. We only got drinks an iced café de olla and a hot one. Both were good, but I felt like the flavor wasn't as strong as the first time I tried it, possibly because it was the end of the day and things were winding down. That being said the service is not the greatest. We ordered their Chilaquiles, green ones with Carne and I have to say they were tasty but that's all that was tasty. Their coffee is the worst I've ever had anywhere and the lattes are super sweet. You're not really getting coffee you're getting more of a dessert drink. When we paid, the server didn't give us an option to leave a tip she just took our bill and we pretty much were asked to leave since they continued to come and ask us if we were done. Overhyped for sure!! Social media made this place famous, but real ones know this place as the horchateria spot. Cafe de la Abuela is basically a rebrand of that same place so that they can sell food. Yes, it is the same owners, and yes, they sell some of their old horchata items from their horcheteria days. They basically wanted to sell food and rebranded the entire model in order to do so. That being said, service is the same; literally some of the same staff is still there. If you order drinks, they will call your name and hand them to you on the side window like they used to do. The main difference is just the food that they now bring to you. But once they bring it to you, you no longer matter. The place is extremely small, and it gets crowded fast, and there's no way to eat in peace here. The line will have it wrapped around the little tables they do have, making your dining experience a bad one. As for the food, I got the Cali burrito; it was alright. The chicken itself was tasteless; if it was not for their green salsa, which was really good, I would not have enjoyed it very much. The crispy chicken was just that ....crispy... and tasteless. Pretty huge let down. I wanted to try the food based on the hype, but nah, no bueno. At least I got myself my usual cafe de olla I used to get from the horchateria. Tastes the same, so that's a plus! Delicious and amazing customer service. I want to come here everytime I visit the San Fernando Valley. This retaurant use to sell Churros and Coffee only, but expanded to delicious food. The inside of the restaurant was beautifully decorated, and very clean. Also the customer service was amazing. For me the star of the show was the horchata steamer. I can't have too much caffeine, so this was perfect. I also ordered the chilaquiles with carne asada with the mixed salsa (green and red). My husband got the carne asada fries which were also delicious. We finished our meal with some churros that were fresh, warm, and a good blend of crunchy and chewy! I will be back again! read more

I was meeting a friend here. I parked in the back and I found the place right away. But I wasn't sure how to or where to order. It was very busy and very hot. A gentleman guided my to the counter and we ordered our food. I ordered the BLT with a side of guacamole and my friend ordered a breakfast burrito. To drink I got a matcha lemonade and my friend got an horchata latte. The inside dining area was very packed so we decided to sit outside. BLT was good. The fries were hot and crispy. I just wish they were salted. My friend really enjoyed her breakfast burrito. She didn't care for the green and red chips though. Salsa and guacamole had really good flavor. Staff was very nice. The place is really easy to find with plenty of parking in the back. Not sure if it's always this crowded but I do want to come back and hopefully get a seat inside. My girlfriend and I stopped in to Cafe de la Abuela on Friday morning, just a few minutes after they opened. There were already 10 people in line. One inside, you are immediately welcomed in a family-friendly cafe, with a light, bright interior, some smooth classic oldies that would make Art Leboe proud dancing through the speakers, and many wonderfully warm friendly faces helping serve up some outstanding Mexican food and drinks in the heart of San Fernando. You order at the counter, with a great staff member helping assist table seating in either the indoor or outdoor patio areas. For drinks, I went with the hot Horchata Steamer, while my girlfriend opted for the Iced Cafe De Olla. The drinks were outstanding. Each made fresh and containing some authentic ingredients that made each sip better than the last. For entrees, I opted for the Breakfast Burrito with Chilaquiles while my girlfriend went with the Carne Asada Chilaquiles. Once we received our meals in the now-full and bustling restaurant, we were both immediately wowed by the vibrant colors and fresh ingredients. After a few bites, we were hooked. The breakfast burrito was large and delicious. Perfectly toasted, the inside crispy and gooey chilaquiles were wonderfully seasoned, with a a touch of heat and simply, awesome. The carne asada was easily once of the best I have tasted. My girlfriend said she hadn't experienced that quality of flavor and seasoning for years. It was tender, packed full of rich flavor and a great accompaniment to the chilaquiles she ordered. My experience at Cafe de la Abuela was simply five-star. The team works hard to prepare some outstanding food and drinks that would make any grandmother proud. I want to come back in the afternoon and evening hours to try some of their homemade sandwiches and churros. Lots of free parking in back and throughout this area of San Fernando. Since all the tables were occupied, I decided to get my food to go. Visited after noticing, on several occassions, the line going out the door and spilling into Maclay. Figured it must be worth a try. We arrived before 8:30 AM, which was perfect timing. There were still multiple seating options both inside and outside, and we were able to choose our spot without having to wait. How it works: You order at the counter and get a number stand so they can bring the food to your table. Whether you claim a table first or order first is up to you, but fair warning: if you show up between 9 AM and noon, expect a wait either way. There's only one person taking orders, and the menu is only posted on the back wall at the counter. If it's your first time and you need to read through the options, this can slow things down. We got the following items: French Toast which was fluffy and rich but nothing remarkable. They didn't skimp on the butter, which is always craveable. My friends had the chilaquiles divorciados. It was disappointing to them. They'd prefer the mojado version where it would come out soggy, with fresh tortilla chips soaked in salsa with eggs rather than what felt to them like pre-made chips with toppings added on top. The drinks were more appealing. I had the chocolate de abuelita which was satisfying. Could taste effort was made in dissolving the bar fully into the leche. The Iced Green Tea Horchata had a subtle, herbal twist. Not too sweet, just enough flavor to stand out. And the Café de Olla was too sweet for our preference.. Overall, this spot felt a bit overhyped. The food didn't quite deliver, so we probably wouldn't be back for that. The servers were friendly and made an effort to check in on you. Although, i do wish theyd state what they were bringing to your table. For example, our drinks all came out at separate times and with the same to go lid. It would be placed on our table with no comment as to what it was. Plus side. I got to try the other drinks. I'd recommend stopping by to try the unique drinks. Given the area, it'll be nice to have something to sip while enjoying a walk around the neighborhood. read more

I guess this place used to be called Horchateria Rio Luna and still shows up on the map as that so it was really confusing when we arrived lol. Place was poppin when we dropped by during brunch and had a difficult time finding parking. It's on a strip of other shops and parking is very limited. We found a nearby residential and just parked there and walked over. The line was out the door and we waited quite a bit. We wanted to try the churros but I guess they don't serve them till after 12 but I can see why since it's super busy! But also bummer that we waited so long in line and wasn't able to try it. I just got an iced horchata latte and that was it. The cashier expedited my order since that was all I got so my drink came out immediately. Makes me think they have these pre-made or something.
