I come to Cafe Don Juan for THE BEST tacos and Mexican food in town! This place is seriously a hidden gem! Prices are so reasonable AND they offer daily specials, so follow them on social media to learn about the off the menu specials. I am always greeted with a smile and everyone is consistently friendly. They are open for breakfast and lunch and parking is located in the back of the restaurant. I honestly think that they have the best fideo in San Antonio and probably south Texas! My husband first told me about it, and I kind of that be normal fideo that you can get anywhere in Texas and beyond, but let me tell you this has to be probably one of the best videos I have ever tried! In fact, it's not only me who just loves but we have to get our order in by the morning because it always sells out. The beans in it are incredible as well as the chicharon and meat. It's extremely filling, not greasy whatsoever and I always try to save a little bit, but I end up eating it all!! honestly if you have a chance, try it and you'll be coming back for more!---However, you can find it only on Thursdays so get your orders in!!! Breakfast tacos are to San Antonio what dipped Italian roast beef sandwiches are to Chicago: regional treats so ubiquitous that locals often take them for granted. Perhaps if the classic papas con huevo taco were as rarefied as torchon de foie gras, we San Antonians might hold it in higher regard. Instead, too many of us have become satisfied with the limp, uninspired variety churned out en masse at local fast-casual joints like Taco Cabana and Bill Miller's. That's a shame because a great breakfast taco can be a religious experience. Anoint my forehead with red chorizo grease, Father, for the breakfast tacos at Cafe Don Juan -- a literal hole-in-the-wall near Commerce and Frio -- had me singing "Hallelujah!" A superior tortilla makes for a superior taco. This should go without saying, but so many places settle with store-bought flour tortillas or instant mixes that yield a hard, powdery disc more suitable for a frisbee than human consumption. The flour tortillas at Cafe Don Juan are soft, diaphanous gifts from the gods yet sturdy enough to contain the juices from an earthy, cumin-heavy carne guisada. Chalk it up to four simple ingredients: flour, lard, salt, and warm water. If love were tangible, I'd consider it the not-so-secret fifth ingredient. My experience with Cafe Don Juan is limited to the four breakfast tacos (yes, four -- you should know me by now) to which my thoughtful secretary treated me recently. That being the case, I can offer no comment on the remainder of the menu, the atmosphere, nor the service. What I *can* say is that these were some of the best tacos I've sampled in a city that many consider the breakfast taco capital of the world. One taco was filled to the hilt with tender, full-flavored machacado shredded like strands of cured beef jerky. Another featured refried beans studded with quarter-inch chunks of red, salty chorizo. A dollop of emulsified jalapeno salsa (undoubtedly homemade) added heat and flavor to all four tacos. San Antonio's Westside is peppered with hundreds, if not thousands, of modest, family-owned Tex-Mex establishments. I imagine many of them are equally as good as Cafe Don Juan, but I'm not letting that influence my review. Based on my experience, Cafe Don Juan warrants a five-star rating. The next time you find yourself craving a breakfast taco near Market Square, resist the touristy trappings of Mi Tierra, drive a few blocks north, and treat yourself to a superior experience at a fraction of the cost. read more

Amazing service amazing food amazing prices. I eat like a bird but this place I ate almost the whole plate! They were super sweet a worked with me being hard of hearing and don't understand Spanish as well. I had the papas and bacon I would say get everything on and the tortillas. This is a great little place - don't let the lack of reviews fool you. My very picky Hispanic husband said it's his absolute favorite place in SA. His face during eating huevos rancheros was like a fat kid in a candy store. The prices are unbeatable --- tacos start at $1.10! The most expensive thing on the menu is $6.50. The homemade tortillas are AMAZING. I had a bacon/egg and potato/egg taco. Very filling and only a few bucks. I would eat there again in a heartbeat for breakfast tacos. Highly recommend! read more

Got wind of this spot from a coworker & it was on point!! Very surprised there arent any reviews... Slipped thru for b'fast and we had the carne guisada, picadillo & egg n chorizo tacos...all were damn good & perfectly seasoned Also had some super fluffy tasty pancakes for the neph!! This place is so throw back and cool and everything else. Blink and you'll miss it driving bye. Had the carne guisda plate which comes with 2 tortillas, beans and rice. Everything was really good, but the beans could use a bit more seasoning. Tortillas for me were the best part. Warm, fluffy and chewy. Coffee is bland at best, but I do like how they have the old creamer tins on the table. Price can't be beat either. read more

Great food and great prices. The establishment appears clean. The people that that work there are super kind and polite. I have always receive great service and delicious food. TLDR: homemade tortillas are delicious! Inexpensive food but high quality tasting. Best Mexican food in San Antonio. Parking is in the back of the building. Absolutely delicious! Parking, and entry, is in the rear of the building. Self seating and the waitresses come to you after you sit down. The line in the other room is for to-go orders. Wish I would have discovered this place at the beginning of my family's trip here. Anytime we come back to SA I plan on eating here. We ordered chips and salsa (salsa is served stove hot and is also very spicy, and the chips were hot out of the kitchen, delicious!), Kid's taco plate that comes with beans, rice, and a tortilla (oh my goodness the other reviews that mention the homemade tortillas are SO spot on, they are the best tortillas I've ever had!), Kid's cheese quesadilla plate served with a half quesadilla (two triangles) rice and beans and a tortilla, and the Steak Ranchero plate. The beans are delicious and a great consistency. My husband really enjoyed his steak Ranchero plate and he raved about the green salsa. I had a side of beans, worth it. The kids had tea each (it's not sweet tea fyi), my husband had water and so did I. Our bill came out to $21.65 (such a great deal for the quality of the food!). The waitress checked on us several times and my husband got to chat with a man I assume is the owner and he was very friendly. read more

We visited Cafe Don Juan last weekend while visiting San Antonio for Fiesta. We were introduced to this place by family and we were not disappointed. Definetly lived up to it's reputation and the reviews on Yelp. This place serves a righteous breakfast. Wow.. The tacos are big and they are delicious. The tortillas are home-made too..Yumm.. We both had breakfast tacos and they were perfect. I had a egg, potato, bacon, beans and cheese taco along with a taco with papas con chorizo and beans The green salsa is hot and delicious Pancakes are big, fluffy and delicious. If you ever want to eat a hearty breakfast, this place will do just fine. Had they not had some flies buzzing around and kept the place a little cleaner, I would have given them a 5-star rating. read more

It is a little hole in the wall, but food was good and cheap the service was quick and to top it off they came around and had a small selection of complimentary Mexican pastries which were exquisite. THE. BEST. PLACE. EVER. first: homemade tortillas. Second: whatever is in the green salsa is from the heavens. The owner is so nice; extremely friendly staff. I had the huevos rancheros which was exactly like my Grama makes. They have this chorizo mix that is not greasy; spicy and amazing. The papas are real potatoes they make here; not frozen. Just peep the pics. You have to come here. Have to. Park In the back and don't look brand new...go through the back door. Lol. read more

Cafe Don Juan.... I giveth thee 4 solid stars! You are good to me early on a Sunday morning. The place and the loud tejano music are exactly what I'm looking for on a quiet Sunday morning when I'm feeling nostalgic.... OMG Selena just came on! Brb!!!..... okay I'm back.... the food here is pretty solid. Carne guisada is good, eggs are good, tortillas are GOOOOOD and the barbacoa is really good! Here's what I don't like about the place: breakfast plates don't come with potatoes, you have to ask for them separately and they're usually SUPER SUPER greasy, also, they leave the cream for the coffee out on the table, for health and sanitary reasons that is just a big no no, for that reason I never order coffee here, oh and they don't make their own corn tortillas, no bueno. Try it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed, if you are, blame it on that guy. Yes, that guy. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times with my family and every time we get the best food and top quality service, my family has been going there for years and we have come to know the owner very closely because of that buildup. Most of the customers would agree with me when I say that they make some of the best tacos on Commerce St. and probably in all of downtown San Antonio. read more

This is my go to place for breakfast. It is very easy to miss, just west of downtown before the bridge if you're going west on Buena Vista, even though I grew up in the area I had no idea it was there until my brother told me. What I get here are the breakfast tacos, they are of decent size at a fair price. Even though I can only make it here once or twice a month I can always trust that my waitress will already know my order when I walk in. Parking is in the rear accessible from Colorado St. I sometimes call in my order when I can't dine in too. This is the type of place where a person can enjoy a nice, cheap, and leisurely San Antonio breakfast while reading the morning paper and watching the news on the big screen TV without feeling rushed. read more

My brother in-law introduced me to this place about 10 years ago. The last meal I had there was as delicious as the first. It's the definition of a hole in the wall, tucked away at Commerce and Colorado. I've never had a better huevos rancheros plate and it's the only place in town where I'll even order it. The tortillas are so supple and delicious. I wasn't lucky enough to ever meet my grandmas, but eating these tortillas creates images of lucky little kids nibbling away at Grandma's amazing homemade tortillas. The menudo (only on weekends) is my wife's favorite and seems to go fast. I've never had anything there that I did not like. The tacos aren't gigantic but to me, it's about the quality and flavor. My wife. & I are in San Antonio this weekend & went here for breakfast based upon Yelp reviews. It was AWESOME. I had 3 different breakfast tacos, my wife had the huervos rancheros and she enjoyed her food. The tortillas are home made and delicious. It's fast & inexpensive and it's a local joint, so we saw no other tourists while we were there. The only downside is they have terrible coffee. Otherwise, loved it. read more

Stopped for breakfast because we wanted real food and not tourist spots on the River Walk. This place did not let us down, we talked to one of the owners and he was a nice guy. Food was good, it was crowed when we got there but we got a table-it is small. Because they were busy it did take a few minutes for service but they were on point after that. We had only wished food on the River Walk was this good. read more

This place gets four stars for good solid Mexican food. Te service was nice as well. The pico de gallo was probably the est I have ever had in my life. Unfortunately now I'm going to expect all my pico to taste that way. The tacos were small but they fill you up and they fill you up fast!!! I ate the barboca tacos yummy! The Absolute best food in San Antonio!! Place closes early guys so please make sure you are there before closing time which is 2pm. Tacos are amazing good with homemade tortillas. The staff was over the top welcoming and very nice! They made me feel like I came to my Tia's house and she fed me all the food in the kitchen! Konstance said they have the best pancakes she has ever had!! (And she's eaten lots of pancakes). Food was served very quickly and nothing we requested was missing or incorrect. I love hole in the wall restaurants but was very disappointed in this one. The prices were great and the service was great but the food was a step below mediocre. I got the taco and enchilada plate, my husband got the chorizo huevo rancheros and 2 breakfast tacos. He took a few bites and pushed his plate aside. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes. read more

While I was in town, I decided to check this place out thanks to Yelp. If you are looking for a yummy cheap Mexican breakfast with home made tortillas, this is the place to go! The husband and I went there for brunch and we spent $11 bucks for both of us! I recommend to get there before 12, it gets pretty packed around lunch time. I would highly recommend this Restaurant. We were in town from Houston Tx, attending our Uncles funeral. It was about 1:30 and they close at 1:45 several waitress passed by but never acknowledged us. My husband and I decided to leave thinking we were not going to get serviced since it was close to closing time when the Owners son came out to our car and invited us back in. Our server told us that there are two ladies in the back that make homemade tortillas all day long, and they were very tasty. I do absolutely recommend that you try this place if you are in the area. We chose to have it on the salsa Verde Tostitos and it was all great combination. The Panelo Asado was a completely new dish for us and was extremely good with a savory flavor from the salsa Tlaquepaque that mixed well with the Panela cheese. Their tortillas though not made in house, are made for them and taste like mom made them. The Mexican Street Corn was great and had the perfect bit of char taste from the corn. It was creamy and flavorful, we did think it could use just a tad more lime juice though. The Spicy Bean Dip was very good. You can't go wrong with Oaxaca, Chorizo, and pieces of pork mixed with some mildly spicy beans. Our server was fantastic. She had great recommendations for us, and was quick with checking on our drinks and generally helping us throughout our dinner. The food was prepared quickly, was hot, tasteful and refreshing. We definitely will be going back, and recommend Pan Fila to all of you.
