They open at 6:00 am so you can get breakfast before you start your day. Lots of friendly waitresses bringing food as fast as it comes out. We were out here visiting from Houston(not many good Mexican food there either) and this place was recommend so we decided to give it a shot. Upon arrival we were told to sit anywhere once we found a location we were immediately greeted from waiter it was a little busy as well. We ordered the carne asada plate, ala carte taco and nachos both were cooked and made to perfection. The other thing i really like was that on the other side that connects that have a Mexican bakery with plenty of goods. I have not stopped into the bakery at Taco La Gardenia in a long time but decided to since I was on this side of town. I was so excited because there was a period of time after Covid that they did not have their cookies, only baked items. Well I'm pleased to say the cookies are back and as good as ever. I have toured Mexican bakeries all over but never found Mexican cookies as wonderful as these. Before I moved to San Antonio my mother in law would mail the cookies to us so they hold a special place in my heart. Their Enchiladas are some of the best and most authentic I've had. The serving is also very generous. My favorite way to order is with two chiles torreados rather than the sliced pickled jalapeño that it comes with. My mouth is watering as I write this. Much to my surprise, the cases were loaded with many different kinds of Mexican sweetbreads. The display was definitely one of the best-stocked I've seen in a long time. OMG!!! I can't believe I forgot to write this review and for that I am truly apologetic. This is another sweet gem I found. My co-worker had never had huevos rancheros and I had to make sure to take her to get one. She had also never had a Mexican Coca Cola and I definitely took care of that too. Let's just say she has now officially been introduced to some Texas staples when it comes to Mexican cuisine. I love the ambiance of this family owned restaurant. This is a great little taqueria + panaderia not far from the Pearl. I first tried their tacos at a friend's baby shower and was impressed by the pillowy flour tortillas. The restaurant was surprisingly full given the time. Everyone ordered 2-3 breakfast tacos and it was dirt cheap, just a fraction of what you'd pay at a restaurant closer to The Pearl or off Broadway. I got a potato & egg and bacon & egg tacos. I was accidentally served an additional bean cheese and egg taco that I quite enjoyed later. My friend who ordered a chorizo breakfast taco noted that it was not dripping in grease and pretty good. I thought the accompanying salsas were both on the spicy side but so perfect for the tacos anyways. The chocolate donut actually tastes like chocolate - not a fake waxy sugar shell. Fabulous Breakfast Tacos! I was quite early to a Memorial Service at nearby St. Paul's, so I stopped in for Coffee and Breakfast Tacos. The place was very much what one might expect in an old San Antonio neighborhood. Cool, funky old building with a Panaderia that looked better than most. The Bakery Counter was as busy as was the Restaurant side. My server was charming, organized and swift. I had a Carne Guisada on Flour Tortilla and an Al Pastor on Corn Tortilla. The hot sauces were wonderful, as was the coffee. This little place is out of the way, but well worth the trek, so if you are nearby, please patronize them. These kinds of places are like gold on the American Restaurant landscape, but they are disappearing because of the big chains. The women working here were so nice, and so efficient. The food was good! There were many breakfast tacos to choose from! I ultimately chose the cactus & egg taco, and the sausage and egg taco, Both were so good! I also love that there was a panaderia (Mexican bakery) connecting next door that you can walk to from the dining area. Solid taqueria. We dropped in after the lunchtime rush, and for our group it was the first time at La Gardenia. It was a good stop and all were ready for the ensuing food coma. Daily specials were available for lunch. Of the chicken mole or chicken flautas, I went for the safer plate...flautas. Now that I know, the next time I will order with more confidence as these folks know what they're doing. The flautas were crunchy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. The plate came with Spanish rice, salad topped with sour cream, and charro beans. All were great. I was really happy they had charro beans because some places stick to refried only. I ALSO ordered a carne asada taco with corn tortilla. This a la carte taco was huge. Two would have been a lot, even on their own. A good taco. They offered a red and a green salsa. Aguas frescas were available, piña and limonada today. Lastly, I'd like to offer that they have a panaderia that is open from morning until the place closes in the afternoon. The goodies they had in hand will merit a visit. Overall, it has everything I'm looking for in a taco dive. Clean tables, friendly staff, plenty of room... and tacos, tacos, tacos. I really wanted to like this place because it is locally owned. But, it was disappointing to say the least. The waitress could not tell me the price of chips and salsa and didn't ask anyone for me. They charge EXTRA for chips & salsa. By the time that I paid for a large menudo (little amount of meat), iced tea and tip, I paid $17 and was STILL HUNGRY. Yuck my best friend got sick after eating here with her other friends recently. Also the cashiers move around helping each other and they DO NOT WATCH THEIR HANDS. We grabbed breakfast tacos randomly here one morning and man we were not disappointed!! Do your taste buds a favor and go get you some.

There are tons of good breakfast tacos to find in San Antonio, but the ones at Taco La Gardenia are among the best I have found it the city. Often, I don't order out items that I can cook at home. And the ingredients in many of these tacos are kitchen staples. That said, if I were to buy all these fresh meats and vegetables, and truly have intense diversity of flavor, I would spend more in dollars and time than what I can get at Taco La Gardenia. In other words, this is the rare value proposition where I honestly feel it would be more expensive for me to prepare the food myself. Also, they are better cooks than I am. The asada guisada - my favorite of the tacos I ordered - was absolutely dripping in goodness and melded well with the asada and tortilla. Bell pepper, onion and tomatoes is Mexico's answer to the Cajun trinity and they do a good job with these ingredients in multiple tacos. The cooking style on this occasion was pretty delicate so that you could have some of that sauteed taste but the veggies retain some crispness. I probably would cook longer for other dishes, but it works great in a breakfast taco. The accompanying sauces are the poblano and chipotle sauces you often find at different Mexican restaurants in the city. Both were good though the green sauce was a bit more watery than I would have liked. Overall, these are outstanding tacos at a great price. If you want a good Mexican breakfast and aren't in a huge hurry, this place is probably better than the other ones you were considering. read more

Super homie downtown San Antonio environment. Great portions, affordable, and great taste! They currently do take dine in customer, have covid spacing throughout the restaurant, and all of their employees wear a mask properly. They also have antibacterial gel for customers. As I walked in we got welcomed by someone in a super friendly voice. Almost reminds you of your tia as you walk in to their house at a carne asada. She asked us to seat where ever we wanted (tables were labeled to keep social distancing). We sat and she quickly asked what we wanted to drink. After the drinks she mentioned the specials for the day came with a drink, we changed out order so that we could take advantage of the specials. I got a torta de carne asada and a drink for about $9. That's a pretty damn good deal! When the torta arrived I did not expect how packed it was with avocado and meat! Definitely a bargain when you look at the food you get. The only down side is that you could taste the carne to be frozen before hand. Might be the reason why it's the special, but for the price.. you can not complain. The fries were fried perfectly crispy and the plate served with a generous amount of jalapeños. The tea was freshly brewed and not powder or fountain. Over all, this spot is bomb. This is our new local spot. For everyone in SA. This place has been around about 30 years. They have restrooms and appeared clean. Lots of seating. I have not had one of these since I was a kid. My husband and I have been wanting to visit this place called La Gardenia. It's always dead or packed when we drive by. Hope I tagged them correctly. It's only open till 2:00pm. We tried the breakfast tacos today at Taco La Gardenia. Our crew had chorizo, bacon egg, sausage egg and several specialty tacos. The food was excellent and the green salsa is a must try. The take-out order was ready within 5 minutes. They have a bakery on one side of the restaurant and La Gardenia on the other side. The dining & seating area is very big, and serving staff greeted everyone as they entered. It's a popular place with a steady stream of both takeout & dine-in customers at 6:45 am.
