Another down home Mexican restaurant in the heart of the Southside. I had the huevos rancheros, with carne guisada, beans, and papitas. All delicious, perfectly prepared, the guisada was perfection with a dash of salt. The potatoes didn't look like much, but expertly fried and seasoned-so tasty. The flour tortillas were heavenly, soft, buttery, and magnificent. The corn tortillas were good but the flour was so much better. The menudo with pata was good, but very spicy and not for the faint of heart-it didn't help I added even more salsa picoso. The pata here didn't really add much, it needed more time in the pot. This is the quintessential little restaurant that could/can/will be doing delicious Tex-Mex and I'm here for it. Nestled on the Southside of SA, in the shadow of Burbank HS & the SAISD Sports Complex, you have arrived into a family run, neighborhood staple (atleast 30+ years) and by looks & tastes of it-they're not done yet. Homemade tortillas were delicious, fluffy AND fresh- Everything was freshly made. They had two salsas-the constant green salsa and then there was their signature chile arbol red sauce-it tasted good and the heat snuck up on you...NICE! Please note that this restaurant is quite small, maybe 15 tables max, but people were willing to wait or opted to go, so be patient. Everyone was warmly welcomed (and they actually made eye contact and meant it!) and the service was efficient & friendly. Don't understand how asking for a dirty table to get wiped down is a big deal and needed the attitude- she said it was clean but still had bits of food and grease on the table. This restaurant came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. On our drive from Ft. Worth to San Antonio, we discovered that the restaurant closes at 3 pm so we booked it there. When we got there, they were closing early at 2:30. We asked for an alternative place for food, and instead they said don't worry about it and fixed us 2 plates of the day's special. Carne guisado, beans, and rice. It was hands down one of the best meals I've eaten. Blue Moon has been around for 50 years and it's not hard to see why. The experience I had yesterday was horrible. The girl that worked there said she was the owner's daughter and was very rude. I had called to inform them that I was overcharged on my card and her answer was my girls never make a mistakes! Me being a customer, knowing I was right she should've said no problem come in. We can fix it and refund you your money but instead She hung up on me and was very rude not professional at all. I will never go back there again. We sat outside on a sunny day and enjoyed bottomless coffee until our food came. I liked my chilaquiles a lot, but my friend said his food was "just ok". We also had chips and salsa to share. The chips were great, they tasted homemade and just out of the fryer. The salsa was spicy and flavorful, and we liked it so much we used it on our food. Went to his little joint based on the initial review. Now, I'm not sure about the tacos as I didn't try them. What I can tell you is that their tortillas are made there. I had the breakfast pork chop plate and I swear, it was probably the best pork chop I've had: tender, juicy and flavorful. Hell, I only got the bite into one of the two pork chops since I was going to town on the eggs, beans and potatoes that come with the plate. The portions are huge and the staff is pretty attentive. A delicious taste of Mexico Today, I had a business meeting for noon on the south side of San Antonio. There wouldn't be enough time for me to make something in the office due to the number of morning appointments I had scheduled. Between morning appointments I googled Yelp and looked for nearby restaurants in proximity to my meeting location. Blue Moon Mexican Restaurant was the one I selected with my heart. My wife ate here many times with her Daddy when she was a little girl. I choose this place because I wanted to walk where she'd walked all those years ago. It would be my first experience eating here. I called ahead to check any lunch specials and I was in luck. A couple of selections including Enchiladas Mexican, three enchiladas in white cheese, sauce, onions along with sides of refried beans, seasoned cooked carrots, two flour tortillas and tea for $5.99 plus tax. I was provided complimentary warm nacho chips and flavorful salsa as a prelude to a delicious plate of food at a bargain price. It's somewhat intimate in space and it's been around for many decades. While in the restaurant, I'd swear I was in Monterrey Mexico due to the taste of the food, the vibe and the people. I loved the whole experience and the food tastes homemade (that's a very good thing). Who comes here? It's the locals including adult daughters with their elderly moms, young couples with babies napping in carriers, small groups of young men carrying backpacks probably off campus from a nearby high school (Burbank), retirees, people from the neighborhood and me, a small business owner. Going back to the Blue Moon on Friday brought back not only great memories but the food was exceptional 52 years later upon returning home to San Antonio. My two friends, former south sliders as we and all Burbank graduates ate one thing in common ... the menudo. Our waitress spoke English and Spanish and tender to us great service. The menudo we 3 ordered was the large bowl. When we received our menudo this bowl was large and full of tender tripe. The "partita" came one the side plate. There wasn't too much hominy, which was good, and onions and green chilies also came on the side plate with the flour tortillas I order. I also ordered a barbacoa taco on a flour tortilla. I also had a large sweet tea. The menudo was tasty and filling. The barbacoa taco was a generous portion of meat inside of it all gulped down with good sweet cold tea. Excellent breakfast. Now if you decide to come to the Blue Moon there is parking on the side and back. I saw a lot of neighborhood people eating there along side middle school faculty who had lunch there as well. The restaurant is like I remember it small inside or you can eat outside in the front. The Blue Moon neon light is gone as I remember it. I will return again and try the other Mexican favorites I saw that went to other tables. I say good Mexican food and come hungry. My grade is a 4 plus. read more
