Decent Huevos Rancheros, came out fast. Coffee wasn't great, but drinkable. Was surprised to find the prices at the register were higher than those on the menu. Coffee up to $2.99 from $1.99 n Huevos Rancheros at $6.49, up from $4.99. Also be aware of the 3% charge for using a credit card. Wish the places that do that would post a sign. read more

Like many reviewers before me, my parents and I trickled in here when we didn't feel like waiting 40 minutes at Pancake Joe's. This joint was more to their liking anyway. Your standard Mexican restaurant in San Antonio with decent food. My parents were very satisfied here. Given they're from Brownsville, their palette for good Mexican food is harder to please. The mugs for their coffee are bizarre. More ended up in my cleavage than my mouth, but they were kind enough to give me a styrofoam cup for my second fill up. Also, I am not graceful. The menudo was top notch. I'm not big on the honeycomb cut, so to my delight they made it using the other cut. It had the right amount of spice to make my nose run. My sinuses really needed that! Some of the meat was a cut too large though. Fortunately it was tender enough to cut with my spoon. (That's how you know it's good) I probably wouldn't swing by on my own here as a first choice restaurant. Good Mexican food places here are a dime a dozen and also there are spots in my neighborhood. Kept trying to find this little place for several years since it is run by a family whose kids I used to teach. I thought it was on Bandera Rd, I was happy to see it was right down the street from Jefferson High School. Of course, the waitress and owner were wonderful ( I must brag, on Maverick alumni!) It has such a wonderful homey feeling and seeing many of my old students and their families was a huge plus! The food was delicious, my migas plate was terrific! Highly recommend this place if you're craving or even not craving some damn good Mexican food! With a wait time of 1-2 hours for other restaurants nearby we popped in to see what the menu had and decided to give it a try. The staff here is super friendly and attentive to their guests which makes for a great dining experience, the lemonade is freshly made in house and the food was some of the best I've had and I will for sure be returning! Friendly service and the food was delicious. Slow, due to being short staffed. Everyone was very nice and friendly.

Visited by chance, and loved it! We originally wanted to visit Pancake Joe's for some of their famous pancakes. However, the wait was at least 40 minutes long and the line was out the door. Since it was 97 degrees outside, we decided not to wait, so we ventured into the Mejican (not misspelled) restaurant next door. It's a nice local restaurant that is not fancy. We enjoyed the breakfast plates and tacos. We'll definitely return when we visit San Antonio again. I forgot to mention, they only open for breakfast and lunch, closing around 2-3pm each day. This small jewel was discovered purely by chance. We were actually going to the restaurant literally next door, but they had a line with what seemed like an outrageous wait time. When we started to look for something else, I realize the this place was the very next door. This is a small family owned Mexican restaurant with excellent food, very attentive wait staff who work together to assure the customers are happy and cared for. The restaurant isn't the prettiest, but it is clean and comfortable. The restrooms are clean, and when you walk by the kitchen it looks extremely clean. Writing this review as I finish my meal here. Not sure why there are 1 star reviews. The food is hot, fresh, homemade food like Mom makes. The waitress was friendly, talkative and offered suggestions to the menu. And the food was down right excellent. Ordered carne guisada with cheese taco, potato and egg taco, chorizo and egg, & bean and cheese tacos (not all for me). Carne Guisada was tender, juicy, flavorful, and served on a hot fresh homemade tortilla. Potato and egg looked like it was a bit over cooked BUT potato's were soft and eggs were not dry. If you like your eggs cooked in butter, give this a try. Again served on a hot fresh homemade tortilla. Bean and cheese was OMG delicious. The flavor was excellent (I actually think better than Grandma or moms cooking) and the fresh hot homemade tortilla took this taco to the next level. The downside is they are located next door to a known breakfast restaurant where people are willing to wait outside in the blazing Texas heat for food & assume it's worth it. Let me tell you, you WILL NOT be disappointed here. While the menus of the 2 restaurants are different, you can eat when you are actually hungry and not have to wait for a waitlist to get a table. I would challenge the people with bad reviews to come back and give them another try. They have been at this location for 17 years, so that has to account for something. The place is clean, tables seemed to be bussed/ cleaned immediately. The busboy told us he has worked here for 4 years. That tells me the owners must be good people to work for. The chicken fajita tacos from here have me changing my mind about other Tex-mex restaurants. The chicken is grilled to perfection with onions and bell peppers all in the taco. NO GREASY tacos here. Chile, Tomate & Cebolla is located on Donaldson, near Jefferson High School. It is a small place and if you aren't looking for it, you might miss it. The restaurant was quaint and had your typical Mexican decor. Any place that sports Emilio Zapata pics in their joint automatically gets 3 stars. Unfortunately, their food didn't wow me enough to go beyond that. Here is the breakdown: Huevos Rancheros: Eggs cooked just right. Ranchero sauce had a very fresh flavor and the onion really came through in the end. It wasn't too chunky of a sauce, which is a plus for my tastes. Carne Guisada: Sauce was darker than usual, which told me it was going to have more of a tomato flavor. It did. The meat was very tender and had a slight garlicky and cumin flavor. I recommend it. Papas: The papas were cooked perfectly and had a slight crunchiness yet stayed tender on the inside. They top it with their ranchero sauce, which made it a little soggy after a while, but it still was a nice side to a good meal. Refried beans: Okay. They were homemade, but lacked the bacon or pork dripping flavor that I usually rate my refried beans by. Definite room for improvement. Chicharrones: Tender, same ranchero sauce. Simple dish and I would recommend it. Migas with cheese: loaded with onions, so don't expect your significant other to be happy if you try to kiss her after you eat this. Great flavor, though. Give it a try. Tortillas: too thick for my liking. Their salsa was not hot at all and because of that, I took a star off. I think salsa should be hot and any place that doesn't put some bite in their hot sauce loses points with me. Overall, this is a 3 star joint. There are better places to eat at, but if you are in the area, then give it a go. read more

If I could give more stars I definitely would. This is our go to breakfast spot rain or shine, hot or cold. My grandparents eat here almost every morning. All our family travels from other sides of town just to meet here. Tortilla soup, taco salads, menudo, carne guisada, asada tacos or quesadillas. Most importantly don't forget their enchiladas sour cream, regular or verde. Depending on the season, they serve some with shrimp too. Basically the whole menu! Just got screwed by Chili Tomate Cebollà on Monday, Presidents Day 2019. We thought we would support the local eatery on Donaldson. They have a huevos rancheros plate special for $2.99 Monday-Friday advertised. So we had two "specials". Went to pay and they tell me that the "dueño" called that there is no special today . There was even a sign outside the eatery advertising the special. I even mentioned the sign they had outside and I was told was "we know we have to take it down". Got charged $13.00 and some change for a plate that wasn't worth the $13.00. I didn't bother to argue my bill just that I will not be supporting this place anymore. read more

I love their tacos. I ordered the potato papa taco, and my friend had the carne asada. Absolutely delicious beans and meats. Also, everything is so reasonably priced. The green salsa sauce is the perfect amount of heat; you can ask for a bottle and add it to your tacos/plates as desired. Overall, did not disappoint. As a guy who has eaten at many many Mexican food places across the city. North, South, East and West side I can say without hesitation this is a top 5 place for me. I rate the location a 7, the service a 9, the food a 9, the prices a 9, the selection an 8. Everything we have ordered was served hot and fresh. Great rice, beans and tortillas. The lowest rated thing I have tried are the enchiladas, I rate those around a 6 compared to the other top 5 places. The servers are friendly and courteous One suggestion for the summer months is an additional Air Conditioning unit for the seating area. Sometimes the dining room is way too warm for comfort. if you are looking for a very laid back and calm place to eat authentic Mexican food please place this one on your must try list. read more

I have been twice and had take out once. The worst of the food tastes good and the best is amazing. I normally eat fairly fast and my wife eats slower than me, but she just about kept up with me because her huevos rancheras were so tasty. I've had a number of their tacos and the steak, for me, is the best. Their carnitas taco is really good as well. My wife bought a bag (9-ish) tacos and brought them home for dinner. By the time we got to them, they were cold. I turned on the oven to heat them up, but when I had one cold, it tasted so good that we began eating them as they were. We ended up only heating up two because that was all that was left to heat up. The reason I'm giving four stars and not five is the service and the ambiance. The two times I've been, the servers were nice and they were helpful, but I had to get their attention when we needed things. They weren't real observant that we (the customer) needed something. The first visit, there was only one waitress, so it was a little understandable, but the second time there were two and I just expect a server to swing by from time to time and ask how everything is/do you need anything. And it really is a hole in the wall kinda place. There were dirty dishes on the counter top at the back of the restaurant. On the plus side, you can get three breakfast tacos (all the same variety) for $3, but you have to use cash. read more
