Tried Café India for the first time via a to-go order (through Doordash). Ordered the chicken tiki masala with rice and garlic naan. I thought the chicken dish had very good flavor and I enjoyed the option of spicy vs non. It pairs really well with a plain rice or bread. The garlic Tandoori is delicious but pretty strong flavor wise so I had just a smaller portion. We stopped by for lunch in a recent Saturday - and we were hungry! This little stop did not disappoint. We ordered at the front then took a booth by the front window. The restaurant is in a small strip mall, in between a gas station and an auto resource shop. The cafe was filled with the music videos of Indian rap (so if there's one suggestion I'd say mix up the music videos a bit. it didn't bother us but I can see that it would cater to more types of music taste to vary that up a bit. Food was served in takeout plastic containers and paper plates - it isn't really a sit-down full service restaurant- at least not on our visit. I'm not sure if that's the norm but we didn't mind as the takeout was already ready in to-go containers! The food was delicious - just the kind of Indian food you want. Amazing Indian food! Chicken Kathi Roll is the best item on the menu. The service is excellent and the prices are reasonable.

Food was a 4/5 for me. Garlic naan was great and so were the samosas. I ordered chicken tikka masala and it was just lackluster. The chicken comes in pieces that are too large. I had to cut every piece up and the actual meat was really dry. The sauce was a little too tomato soup-y for my liking, but they got the spice levels down really well. The service was fantastic, everything is clearly labeled and priced and the younger guy behind the counter gave over the top customer service. Very friendly and helpful with explaining menu items, as well as brought the food directly to our table. He even gave us a little more information about the Indian rap/hip-hop music videos that were playing. Ambience is okay - there are huge, bright slot machines that are kind of an eyesore, but I'm guessing this is why I paid ~$15 for my entree instead of $17+ like everywhere else. Visiting Milwaukee, we realized that we needed some Indian food. Cafe India is a place that is hidden next to a gas station. First of all, please don't waste time ordering the non vegetarian Thali. The dishes were the generic affair and didn't have the nostalgic taste of an Indian Thali nor the new age oomf that one can expect. Also the samusa chicken is a lot of hype for nothing. The chicken filling felt like old Tikka leftover meat. Tea was great. No fancy stuff. However the star of the show was the Chole bature with chutney. Thr chutney was amazing and Chole excellent. Someone from the restaurant called me and asked me about what I wanted. So, I picked palak paneer, chicken tikka masala and dal special. Curries come with rice and I opted for roti from the other options. For dessert, picked rasmalai, but they do not have it on on weekends. So, went with sooji halwa. I've been sampling a lot of inexpensive food in Walker's Point lately. I say inexpensive and not cheap because "cheap" kind of implies lower quality and that's not always the case. But sometimes for your money you're interested in food and not as much in presentation or atmosphere. Walker's Point has a number of restaurants that satisfy those cravings, but Cafe India stands out a little bit, if only for offering a different type of cuisine from the rest of the area. It's affordable enough and the food is good enough I'll have to make it a regular stop. It's not that the atmosphere is "bad." The restaurant was clean when I visited and the people were friendly. It's just no-frills. The food comes in styrofoam containers even for dine-in. The tables are the fast-food type. There's a TV on in the corner. There is another Cafe India in Bay View that's more of a sit-down restaurant, but I think I like the food at the Walker's Point restaurant a little more. The one caveat other reviews have mentioned is that rice doesn't automatically come with the meal. It's $2 extra. It's really only a problem if you don't know and forget to order it. The entree prices are around $9-$11, which is a little lower than comparable dishes at other Indian restaurants. I had seen all the mouth-watering photos people had posted of the lunch special, which DOES come with rice and all the other goodies. But I work way over on the other side of town, and my visits are likelier to be during the dinner hours. So I was happy to see that Cafe India now offers a Thali special, which is 3 entrees from a list of 6, with rice and naan and a drink. This is totally a great choice. It's $11! It's a very full container of food. And it's a chance to try a few different dishes. I got my thali with dal, saag paneer, and chicken tikka masala. They were all great. I really liked the tandoori chicken in the tikka masala. The saag paneer was even better as leftovers. But I was partial to the dal. Dal with rice is one of my favorite simple pleasures. Cafe India's has a little extra flavor from the tomatoes and onions compared to versions I've had elsewhere. I've had better Indian food in my life. I've certainly had fancier or more variety. But the quality at Cafe India is still high enough that it's a find. Writing this has made me wish I still had some of those leftovers in my fridge, but I polished those off the next morning. read more

I'm in love. I've been to the Bay View location numerous times, today was my second visit to the Walker's Point location. Bay View is tasty and with great customer service, definitely. When I tell you that I excel at carry out and so does the Walker's Point Cafe India, we're simply a match made in heaven. The menu here is unique to this location. Overall, this location is more casual which is great if you're like me and you wear stretchy pants to leave the house and procure supper. There is some indoor dining but they definitely specialize in carry out. The wait here is short and honey the food is comforting, soulful and satisfying. They know how to use heat well. It's a happy heat because you're happy about the heat. They offer numerous vegetarian and vegan options. My go to is the Thali platter which is available daily in a meat, vegetarian or vegan option. It includes rice, bread and three curries which vary each day. It also includes a dessert and a can of soda or La Croix. I love the variety and being able to try new dishes each time. Also, absolute best samosa of my liiiiiiife. Everything is so good. Customer service is great. I wish my belly was bigger for more tasty food! The cafe has been very responsive to COVID precautions. All employees are wearing masks and all customers are required to wear a mask. The layout of the cafe has been modified to support social distancing. The usual hot bar and buffet has been discontinued due to COVID19. read more

I miss the old Cafe India - the pre-"pandemic" version, that is. The food was always incredible and you could get anything you wanted as it was served "live." In fact I ate there at least once a week, frequently more often, for over four years. Stopped in last week for the first time in a few months. There was a 35-minute wait for food. The food is still good, but it is not as good. I don't know what has changed but something has. This is the third time now in the past year I've concluded this. I'd also prefer to have portions reasonably-sized with pricing to reflect. Including six large pieces of nan with each meal is silly - that's a meal in itself. The place was always dirty (it was worth it), but it seems dirtier now. The salt shakers (tried more than one) were so sticky one had to wash hands after touching them - and the salt was solidified by moisture into a single clump that would not separate. Nothing would come out. This filthiness is ironic given the germophobia evident otherwise (below). AFAIK the city is no longer enforcing any pointless, business-killing ban on buffets (and their's was a behind-the-counter buffet anyway). I know the city is not enforcing the big-brotherish "stand six feet apart" orders they have displayed either, or the ridiculous "must have mask to use bathroom" on that door. I sympathize greatly with business that had to put up with those things (we have multiple friends that had their lives' work destroyed by these unscientific regulations), but this stuff isn't that. read more

It's been a little while so it's probably time for an update for Cafe India. Prices have increased a bit so the lunch special is about $10 these days. I find I do better ordering off the menu though. Case in point - last night. I was just off a flight and starving so I called in an order for pickup. Everything was ready when I got there and was still fresh and hot when I got home. I ordered chicken Chana spicy with rice ($2 xtra) and naan for under $15. It was a huge portion - easily enough for 2 people and it for once it was SPICY! I'll say that charging extra for rice is a little wack but at least they give you a good amount. read more

Cafe India has quickly become my new favorite Indian place in Milwaukee. Very friendly service, both on the phone and in person. My go-to is the Chicken saag. I want to branch out and try more of the menu but I can never pass up a chance to eat this dish, it's so good. Do yourself a favor and order it. Two things I've tried but didn't love were the chicken tikka masala and the kheer. Tikka masala was oddly sweet, but not horrible. Kheer didn't have much flavor, but I poured the rose syrup from the gulab jamun (order this too) into it and it was infinitely better for it. Cafe India hands down is my favorite Indian cuisine in Milwaukee. I've tried a number of places over the past two years and haven't really found a locale that I like more. Both locations are great, but if you're looking for a slightly more formal "sit down" environment, the Bay View location is likely where you want to go. The family who runs the business is quite nice and they always make fresh, hot food packed with excellent flavor. I know that chicken tikka masala is a favorite of many people and needless to say, it's the best around. Their butter chicken is also exceptional. If you are vegetarian, they have a good curry selection available with tons of great options. Outside of curries, the tandoori dishes are delicious and often tempt me to do something other than curry.
