Yummy breakfast spot. This place is basically a regular breakfast diner with usual favorites but they have some more unique options on the menu to embody the Texas culture. I decided to get the chorizo breakfast plate which was so delicious. The refried beans and hash browns were perfectly cooked and came with a side of tortillas so you could make yourself a couple of small breakfast burritos. Another thing that Cafe Java does a great job about - you get great value for what you're paying for and guaranteed you will not leave hungry. Note - this place is very popular and gets packed very quickly. We had to wait about 20-30 minutes for a table of 2, but it was definitely very much worth it. read more

As far as cafes go, this place is one of the best in Austin. With all-day breakfast everyday, this means I can get breakfast for dinner! If you come on the weekend for brunch, expect it to be very busy and a waitlist. The breakfast menu ranges from omelettes, pancakes, breakfast platters etc. We opted for the Greek and California Omelette, both came with your choice of side and toast. Both were equally delicious and the omelette was cooked to perfection. Plus, any place with good coffee and crispy hash browns will be a favorite of mine. I came back the next day for my birthday and got the same thing and they offered Burger Bash on Mondays. I got a slice of the mascarpone berry tiramisu which was unique. My review is based solely on the food as I didn't eat inside so I cannot rate the service. After reading prior reviews, I ordered the migas (not the ultimate) with fresh salsa. The fresh salsa was more robust than the ranchero sauce. The ranchero sauce didn't bolster the flavor of the migas so I could have done without it. Overall, I disagree with the rave reviews which is hard because I like supporting small businesses and giving them good reviews. Migas: I found the flavors of the migas dish pretty bland. Perhaps I needed to add salt and pepper. I'm not sure. I'm a tough judge because the migas dish at Jim's restaurant is far more superb in taste. Bacon: The bacon needs to be sources from a different vendor. This product brought down the flavor profile of the dish. Don't order the bacon for now. Pancakes: The original pancake was absolutely delicious. The pancakes are thin with just enough fluff. The flavor profile had just enough sweetness. Rating: I initially rated this restaurant 3 stars and then I tasted the green jasmine tea and added a star because it was that good. Overall: I always judge a restaurant by asking the question would I go back. I wouldn't go back because I found the migas dish that disappointing. The El Dorado of Migas * * * Until I went to Cafe Java, I did not see what the migas fuss was all about. And God knows I have had plenty of them. People would take me out to brunch to get their legendary migas fix, I would be picking at my scrambled eggs with jalapenos and stuff while they were having their breakfast orgasms. I like scrambled eggs with stuff in them. I make that all the time at home. I even add chips, salsa, yadda yadda yadda to the mix. In the end, it is still scrambled eggs. * * * I am not sure what the magical secret of Cafe Java is. Maybe it is them adding chorizo to the mix - which is what you get if you order their "ultimate" migas. Maybe it is serving the migas right on top of hash browns. Hash browns add butter, richness and heft. In fact, some Yelpers think that the hash browns might be the operative secret ingredient here; they say the hash browns are among the best in Austin. They say you could put school lunch on top of those hash browns and it would make school lunch taste good . Maybe it is the quadruple sized serving of salsa so the migas are drowning in salsa rather than just having a thin-stripe napping. Maybe they engage in the secret sin that makes everything wonderful ... the three letter flavor enhancer beginning with an m. Either way - these were the tastiest and most interesting migas I have eaten in Austin anywhere. And this was despite the fact they were eaten under coronavirus conditions, where they had to be driven home for twenty minutes in a brown paper bag. * * * Other notes: 1) Their almond lattes are also good. Markedly more almondy than most almond lattes Without being syrupy or cloying. 2) Their dining room is decorated in college insignias and 1960's style Jimi Hendrix style rock posters. That part of the experience IS syrupy and cloying. 3) The place is run by some very feisty ladies with a lot of personality. 4) The Gracy Farms crowd loves this place. At 10:30 on a Friday morning, there was a constant flow of people coming to get take-out. A lot of them were getting really big orders. So the food was great and the waiter that served me and my family was nice too I'm only dropping it to two stars because of the woman who works here and seemed to be the cashier for this particular day. I brought my service dog here and not only was I asked what disability I had but when I said ptsd the lady looked at me like I was stupid and told me it needed to be a " physical disability " lol, never in my life have I or my dog been discriminated like that. How dare you, I honestly was so taken aback because I've never experienced something like this. I won't be retuning even though they ended up letting us eat there because " the dog is small, but next time I won't be able to bring her because it's not a physical disability" btw I know the difference between and emotional service dog and a service dog lol. Just arrived in Austin and tried Cafe Java for breakfast with my son and daughter-in-law. The space is small yet comfortable & the flow of customers was steady. Our server Becka (& everyone else) was great. Breakfast was good, I had the Grinch (special) eggs were cooked well and beans were lacking a little flavor (for my taste). I could have also used more than two tortillas. I suspect if I asked they would have brought more but again for me, two isn't nearly enough. My son ordered the meat lovers omelet and a side of corned beef hash. He said it was good and had good flavor. His breakfast only came with one slice of toast. My daughter-in-law had oatmeal with a side of bacon. It was presented nicely and bacon was cooked nicely. Overall, it's a solid 3 for us. We would like to return to try lunch. Enjoy! read more

Everything was fine except one annoying waitress who for some reason felt the need to talk so loud everyone could hear her and say the pledge of allegiance and the TX pledge of allegiance ?!?!? The place isn't very clean, I definitely noticed lots of cobwebs and dust over all the art and hanging mobile things. Do not order chips and queso, it is literally Tostitos brand chips and queso. The Latte was kinda stale tasting, not sure if they put stale coffee or actual espresso shots in, but it was one of the worst I've ever had. Pancakes were good, so were the eggs and bacon. That guaranteed this was my last dose of caffeine for the day. What does a large foo foo coffee come in a firemen's boot? My colleague ordered a peppermint type coffee and it smelled and tasted like Christmas. Oh, the food five freekin stars baby. Homemade corned beef hash, eggs cooked to perfection, and a perfectly toasted and buttered English muffin made for a perfect breakfast brunch. We decided to stop in on our way back to Dallas. This place we got in really quickly and the food came out so quick. The people who worked here were super nice and fun. The decor just makes you feel warm and like you are at your grandparents house eat breakfast and hanging out. My friend tried the French toast (came with bacon ). She really enjoyed it and ate it all. I tried the breakfast tacos (bean, bacon, cheese and egg) and hash browns. These were so delicious. They were actually big and filled. I'm not really a fan of hash browns, but they were good. I wish they had potatoes. The picture of French Toast is what drew me in! They came exactly like the picture . I ordered the French toast, bacon and sausage with a side of grits. I asked for crispy bacon...the chef understood the assignment. I sat at the bar my server was prompt and my food came out hot and quick. Grits were a good consistency could have been hotter but that's preference. The pork sausage tasted fresh (if that was frozen they fooled me LOL). The first bite of French toast was good, but the more I ate the better it kept tasting. I took a picture of my plate at 11:09am when it came out I felt like I was eating fast so I tried to slow down but by 11:20am I was down to 1 crispy slice of bacon and a corner of sausage. Been here tons of times, honestly a really cool spot. Local, cheap, and the food is decent. I hope that the owner or manager reads this- I went in today with my friend and the waiter made comments about our hickeys (no biggie, it was funny the first time). So this is as unbiased as possible, I'll try to write what he said as he said each time.... Right when he takes our drink order "Oh, you've got something on your neck... haha" No big deal. I smile politely, and mention "yeah I guess I do." We order..... "so I've got a steak and eggs plate for Mr. Hickey, and a chorizo plate for Mr. Hickey" I give off a deadpan look, it's really not funny anymore. Food comes out.... Different employee this time. Sets the food down, we're hungry. Asks if we need anything else.... "Maybe some concealer... haha" I don't say anything this time. Guy checks up on us, mentions the hickeys again. He mentions "I really wish the guy I'd hung out with last night gave me a hickey THAT big hahahaha" Like, idk, but it was just really annoying at this point. Literally every single interaction I had with an employee while sitting down involved mentioning a hickey. Without fail. Like, I'm sorry, it was funny the first time, but not the second, third, or fourth time. I know, take a joke why don't you.... But the guy was really just in-your-face about it, and it made me uncomfortable. If the person were actually chill/could read the room and see that it was funny, I'd say go for it. In almost every single Facebook post I see where people are asking about breakfast suggestions, so many people seem to swear by this place. I have lived literally blocks from here for years and have given it multiple attempts and each time I always leave with the same thought, "What are people talking about?!? " Don't get me wrong, I really haven't had a BAD experience there. The staff is always pretty friendly and the food has always been hot and cooked properly. But in all honesty, there really isn't anything special. Like, just about every single thing on that menu I could cook at home literally EXACTLY the way it's cooked there. It's pretty just plain-Jane greasy spoon cuisine. I have driven by on weekends and seen literally dozens of people waiting for takes as it's rather small on the inside. But I always wonder why. With the multitude of different breakfast places around town, there really is no reason to go wait in an hour long live for 2 eggs and a sausage patty that you could literally cook exactly the same way, or even better, at home. I can see this being big for those college kids across the street who probably don't know how to cook and went an old fashioned home cooked breakfast, or those really hungover needing all that grease. Ever since I found Cafe Java, my family has been here at least 3 times in a month. I loved everything about this place: from the refreshing and rejuvenating coffee smell, the kind staff, the huge delicious plates of food, to most importantly, the affordable bill in the end. Even though they have multiple locations, Cafe Java is a quaint neighborhood joint that is a great place to grab some breakfast, lunch or simply a good cup of coffee. The seem to treat their employees well as the servers and even the people who bus the tables have been remained throughout the years. The food is consistent and the menu has a wide selection that has something to offer for everyone. I enjoy the pancakes, omelettes, migas plates and sandwiches. I can honestly say that I've never had a bad meal at this or any location. The coffee beans sourced from many international places with specific descriptions to help you pick the one that is right for you. When you go, it may look like there is a long wait if you see many groups waiting outside for their tables ,but never fear, the waitlist goes by pretty quickly and you'll be at your table/booth in no time. It's also a good place for families with young children as their service is friendly and food is very prompt. It is also a good place to stop for coffee if you have a few minutes to wait before you get your nails done at Tegan's Nails in the same shopping center. (Also a great place for nails!) This place was packed at 9:15am on a Saturday. You sign your name on the list kept on a spiral notebook and they will call it, smaller parties (mainly 2) have an advantage. We waited about 20 mins max but the aroma and people watching made us patient. People here really like to make friends. While we waited, four different strangers struck up conversation. As to the food and beverage. Iced tea was weak and watery. Not a nice start. However, the food was good and so was the service. The employees here work as a team to take care of the customers.
