This must be how people of other ethnicities feel when they try Chinese food in a legitimate Chinese restaurant for the first time. I only found out about this place after looking at some list of best Chinese restaurants in NY, with this being the last place shown of course it raised some questions. Once those questions were answered (with some staring at yelp) it very quickly rose to the top of the spots I must try. Let me first say that I was pleasantly blown away by the "lagman" along with a couple of other lamb based dishes. But let me go back to that "lagman" which is in the case of this restaurant a stir fried noodle. Immediately upon the impact of the new noodle upon my teeth I knew it was something to write down for the books. I'm not a good judge for this as I've never had the type of noodle but gosh darn is it good for frying. The result is an amazingly spongy and chewy type of noodle that absorbs the flavors around it oh so beautifully. The lack of the final star comes from the fact that I can tell that some of the things are not that great of quality. Namely, I got a flat and fried pancake that was stuffed with meat. Although I'd say it tasted alright it had the feel of something that's been lying around for a while and was only refried or something. I can only assume that there are a couple of other things on the menu that faces a similar problem. Overall if you come here with close to no knowledge of the cuisine listen to the others here. Get things with lamb and do yourself a little favor of trying the lagman. read more

I probably would have given it four stars if I have not been here in the past. It used to be a 5+ star place in my book. We ate at Kashkar multiple times and loved it so much that we made a point to come to Brighton Beach every time we are in NY. This time we were disappointed: quality of food is nothing like it was before. Manti were not nearly as flavorful and there were tough pieces of lamb in the filling that I've never encountered in the past. Samsa was pretty good though. Come here if you pray to the lamb deity. They serve it in a variety of excellent Uyghur dishes, including over rice and carrots, in sambosas, and on succulent, fatty skewers. Tons of flavor in each one, with generous portions that are priced fairly. I went with a friend from Xinjiang province and she was beaming the whole time. Terrible the second time! I've been here before during the day. Two ladies were running it and it was friendly and delicious. There were only 3 people there. But the second time we went was at night. The was full so we waited 30 min on line. There were 4 young men working. this time it was terrible service. The two of us were seated outside and the table spot smelled like dog shit. Lots of mosquitos underneath too. Another russian couple arrived after us but were given menus first. We waited 15min and I finally had to go inside and ask for a menu. When they came to take our order they asked the russian couple next to us first. The couple had to tell them that they should take our order first. Our food was brought to the Russian couple next to us. They had to tell them it was ours. Only one plate was brought but with no cutlery or plates. We got hungry so we ate the dumplings with our hands. When the shishkabov came, we had to ask for a fork. The third plate (a tofu salad) never came. we decided to pay and leave (the dog shit smell was too bad) but I had to go inside to get a check because they never brought it. I told them I would take the salad to go. An hour had gone by since we ordered it. They said it was being made and would be only 5 min more. 20 min later after I paid I finally got the salad in a bag. All this took an hour and 20min since we were seated. They gave us a soda can but never brought a cup. I didn't leave a tip because the service was so bad. The food was delicious but the service was terrible, even when most of the tables had already left. We won't be coming back. read more

This is a review for takeout. I had this place bookmarked for a while, as I had never tried Uzbek cuisine and it came well recommended. On a recent trip to South Brooklyn, we decided to give it a try! After seeing how inexpensive the food was, we decided to order a wide variety of things, not realizing their prices had gone up significantly, welp. We tried the Manti dumplings (steamed), samsa (pastry filled with lamb), geiro lagman noodles, a lamb kebab, a meat stuffed pancake (? I never figured out the name of this dish - ordered it by pointing to the photo on yelp!) naan and carrot salad. The host/waiter who took my order was welcoming and friendly, and tolerated our language barrier with patience. Looking around, I saw a large multiethnic group of young foodies, two couples that felt like locals, and a man dining alone, with a spread of dishes, reading the paper. It was a nice mix, and it made me feel like I stumbled on a gem. When we got home, we realized they hadn't included the creamy sauce or tomato salad that got mentioned in a lot of reviews, which was a bummer, but our bad for assuming it would be included. We really enjoyed the taste of everything we got, but felt that the naan (which is not made in house) and the lamb kebab (which included fatty, chewy cuts) could have been left off - the dishes that showcase the tasty lamb/onion filling and the lagman noodles seem to be the move here. Carrot salad added nice crunch and flavor to an otherwise heavy meal. Overall I'd return, and I think this could be a four or five star experience with some smarter ordering. read more

Marco Polo would surely have fallen in love with Uyghur-Uzbek food at Café Kashkar, which displays the varied Mongol/Chinese/Turkic/Uzbek/Russian influences of the cuisines. After half a dozen visits, I'm hooked too. My meal usually starts with the Manti or the Samsa. Both of these contain tender lamb chunks with sweet onions, the difference being that the Samsa are baked and have a golden brown, flakey, crusty exterior, while the Manti are thin skinned, ginormous, steamed dumplings served with sour cream. Vegetarians have the option of trying the Khonoom that have a potato filling and are served with a tomato based sauce. But, the appetizer I've found particularly intriguing was the "Naryn", which is simply boiled, jerked meat served with dough. It's a cold appetizer, with the dough resembling shaved mozzarella, topped with meat slices. It's lightly seasoned with cumin, and has a nice chewy texture. People who've tried it in other cuisines might be tempted to order the "Pilaf", which is pillowy, fried rice with carrots, lamb, and cumin. As someone who was brought up eating the Indian version ("Pulao") at least once a week in my childhood, I just don't find their version as complex, and didn't develop a liking for it, given the clumpiness of the rice and minimal use of spices. One of the star attractions in the cuisine are the Shou La Mian ("Lagman" in Uyghur) that are handmade noodles made from flour, salt, and water. The noodles are boiled till they are soft and then topped with stir-fried meat, vegetables (onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, scallions). There are three different versions available at Café Kashkar. One is a lamb broth, and is simply called Lagman Soup; the other is called Geiro Lagman and is served as an appetizer (though the serving size could well be an entrée); while the third one is called Fried Lagman. You can douse the noodles with the vinegar based sauce on the table, or enhance the spice level by requesting a hot sauce. The noodles are fluffy, chewy, and not very dense, with Geiro Lagman being my preferred version. The Kebabs, cooked to order, over charcoal, are my favorite menu item. Given my preference for spicy food, I prefer Pakistani Kebabs over all others, but Kashkar probably has my next favorite interpretation. Served on a pointy, metal skewer and seasoned with chili powder, pepper, salt, and cumin, it's meant to be eaten with the skewer parallel to the mouth, and sliding the meat off the pointed edge into one's mouth (I describe this after witnessing many a dainty attempts of people trying to use a fork). The Kebabs are the juiciest I've eaten in the city, and while not spiced to make you sweat (as they could be at Xinjiang BBQ cart or the Mongolian BBQ cart in Flushing) have a nice charcoal taste to them, are deliciously tender, with the flavor enhanced by the raw onions and accompanying sauce. Given that the restaurant doesn't serve alcohol, my preferred drink has been the Compot: a punch like fruit drink common across the former Soviet Republics / Eastern Europe, tracing its origin to the Ottoman Empire. On occasion, the naturally carbonated mineral water, Borjomi, has been good to cut through any carb/grease overload. Given its Georgian roots, I wonder why we didn't try it at Pirosmani! You can end the meal with dessert: Chak Chak is a Rice Krispies like treat that is served in the shape of a fried, noodlesy brick, held together by honey. It's surprisingly light, but the portion size is huge. The one disappointment has been the bread, called Nan, but more like the Bukharian Lepeshka. It's chewy, dense, and isn't served freshly baked - which makes eating a challenge after a few minutes. Also, as there is no dip or butter, one doesn't know what to do with it other than use it as a way of chewing food between courses. It could easily be so much more! I was surprised by earlier reviews criticizing the service. Possibly due to many visits, but I'm always greeted warmly and with a slight smile. Also, I don't have any expectations of people flashing me faux million watt smiles. The ambiance is minimal, there's always an Uzbek stage show on TV, with the singer belting fairly catchy and hummable tunes, even if you don't follow a word. What's Uighur food all about? Well, its an odd mix of Central Asian cumin-laced kebabs, meets Russian pickled salads, meets Chinese stir fried noodles, meets Uzbek sesame-speckled bread, meets Persian style slowcooked rice pilafs. Yeah, it's weird. But weird in a good sense. I returned to Cafe Kashkar after a few year hiatus (the tiny restaurant's remote location in Brighton Beach doesn't allow for frequent visits) and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did the place get a face lift and a new sign, but the food was better than I remember it. Highlights were the succulent lamb kebabs, which were dripping with juicy flavor, garnished with crunchy chopped onions and an amazingly delicious dipping sauce made of dill, tomato and vinegar. The laghman noodles, which are a Uighur specialty, came in two forms: the traditional soup and a "fried" version, which was more akin to Chinese fried noodles. It's dishes like this where you see the strong Chinese influence. The noodles had a great bouncy texture, served with an array of green onions, bright red peppers and other veggies, and topped with a julien sliced fried egg and an aroma of smoked cumin. Salads were nice compliments. My particular favorite was the ubiquitous Korean carrot salad, spiked with a tangy sauce and chopped fresh garlic. Plov or rice pilaf was average and full of cumin, although it wasn't as good as Cheburechnaya's version in Rego Park (Uzbek style). Lepyoshka or Uzbek style bread was okay too, although Cheburechnaya may also have a better variety. Overall, Cafe Kashkar is a solid spot for a little known cuisine. I would not eat here. Food was extremely greasy and when I told them that it is and I wanted a refund. They gave me the biggest attitude. The lamb shashlik came with two huge pieces of fat and only 3 pieces of meat. The fried lagman had almost no meat and was basically heavily fried noodle soaked in oil. Image attached. If you expect immigrants to wait on you "hand and foot" during service of your $9.50 meal, I'm glad I don't work for you. Sometimes I read those tabloid bait stories about Park Avenue swells being sued by their former nannies for 13th amendment violations and I wonder, "Who are these creeps?" But whenever I log back into Yelp, I'm reminded that there are lots of you out there. If not in fact, then at least in anticipation of your having your very own UES penthouse. I admit it. Whenever I encounter a nice, mild-mannered woman who speaks approximately zero words of English and who's decided that it's worth leaving Samarkand to spend all of her waking hours in a tiny storefront restaurant on Brighton Beach Avenue serving American culture vultures cheap food that probably makes her homesick, I just want to shake her by the shoulders and scream, "Learn English so that you may more obediently serve me!" If you, too, can restrain these baser impulses, you'll probably agree that Cafe Kashkar is pretty awesome. I had some fried lagman noodles with chunks of lamb, long beans, and pepper. Very, very flavorful. The lamb was really delicious. Now if it were me, I might fry the noodles a bit more, I might toast the cumin, I might add the pepper a minute or two later in the cooking process, and I might drain a bit more of the cooking oil. But it's really hard to argue with a toothsome $7.50 dish (or $2 Pepsi) that only leaves you excited about future visits to Kashkar. read more

Cafe Kashkar is a prime example on how service can make or break a dinner experience. From the moment we walked in to the restaurant, all indications were that this small business would be up to the simple task of delivering the cuisine of Kaskar, waiting on the new clients hand and foot making for a pleasant dining experience. When we arrived, there were about twenty four total seats inside, some empty tables outside, so the waitstaff had four tables a piece. On the side of the restaurant I was seated at there was only one four top which is a piece of cake for any semi experienced server. The appetizer I ordered came as a recommendation from the server (mentioned in my tip that I wrote in real time) was not available but the server assured me would be ready at some point. What point may that be? When it is time for dessert? Perhaps after we have left? So I ordered distant second choice which was the Kashkar Salad. At seven bucks it was reasonable, filled with peppers both red and green, yet with a late onrush of spice which was not intrusive to my taste buds. The Samsa was excellent, hard pastry shell with some nice thin cuts of lamb and translucent onion, very worth the two dollars and fifty cents per. Ground beef ka-bob was burnt on the bottom which, as it is not cooked directly on open flame is not an easy task. We ordered the Naan which was very fairly priced at two dollars to go with our entree Nokhat, which we shared, which was another lamb dish and was good, far from great. Server errors: ~Telling me about an app that is unavailable. ~Never refilling the water even though we asked in two languages on three different occasions. ~Not serving butter with our bread, yet other tables had it. ~Serving us cold bread, this is such a simple one. Just ask it to be reheated. Like I am not going to notice the difference? ~Two tables were drinking wine and beer, but there was no liquor license. The server fumbled with reasons why the patrons were having beer and wine with their meals, he seemed to not have an answer. The best understanding I got was that they sneaked it in and the business was too embarrassed to ask them to not drink it in their restaurant. really? I must have looked simple to this guy, in that he could fabricate any reason to answer any of my questions and I would buy it hook, line and sinker. ~We asked for the check three times and in two languages as we were running late for an event. The server goes to the back, which I has to assume to prepare the check as it was out third request. Instead he comes out with place settings and begins to ready a table for customers that were not there. This guy must be related to the ownership as he would be canned on the spot if he were working in most establishments. ~I am sure I am leaving out a few gems of his inability to serve, however I am growing weary of listing and discussing his ineptitude. Non server complaint: ~Whoever lives, occupies or squats in the space above the restaurant is in desperate need of a visit by managment, to express the immediacy urgency to avoid practicing the shot-putt for the 2016 Summer Games or practicing Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka's leap off the top rope or whatever the hell they are doing up there, Its obnoxious. Having spent part of my summer doing research in Kazakhstan, I was excited to come home and share my experience with my fiance -- through food of course. Although this is a Uyghur restaurant, much of the region's cuisine share similar dishes; lagman (hand pulled noodles), plov (rice pilaf), and manti (dumplings) are are commonly served across Central Asia. Knowing Brighton Beach was the place to go, I was excited to check out Cafe Kashkar after reading some pretty solid reviews. The restaurant itself is small and quaint. I immediately felt comfortable, nostalgic, and excited because it fit the criteria of a typical Central Asian restaurant: ethnic tchotchkes - check, TV looping music videos - check, Central Asian patrons (Kazakh, Kyrgyz, etc.) - check, ethnic Russian patrons drinking vodka and beer, while nibbling food and taking extended cigarette breaks at 5pm on a Wednesday - check! I ordered the cold carrot and cucumber salad, manti, lagman soup, fried lagman, tea, and compot. The carrot and cucumber salad was perfect for a warm summer day, crunchy, pickled, and chilled, served with green beans, bell peppers, glass noodles and a perfectly tart, vinegar sauce. Between the lagmans I ordered, I preferred the fried lagman, while my fiance preferred the lagman soup. The soup was great; thick, chewy, springy, hand pulled noodles in a slightly oily, rich, dark broth served with chunks of lamb, tomatoes, garlic, onion, celery, and green beans. The fried lagman was similar, except served without soup (as it's fried), and topped with a fried egg. Douse the crispy, slightly crunchy, sticky noodles with the vinegar on the table, and you're good to go. The only reason I preferred the fried lagman was because the lamb flavor was not as strong (I'm not a fan of lamb...and spending an extended amount of time in a country where I was an honored guest and served sheep brains and eyeballs among other things was quite an adventure!). The manti came out last. In fact, they came out so far toward the end of the meal, I thought they had forgotten our order. The manti were HUGE. The largest manti I've ever had in my life. They were the size of hefty hamsters (or a small fist). Manti are similar to East Asian dumplings, but the filling is slightly different. Thick dumpling skin is wrapped around a lamb and sweet onion mixture, and steamed in a bamboo basket (or fried and served with sour cream -- or mayo, if you're really brave, though luckily they don't seem to do that at Cafe Kashkar). Again, the gamey lamb flavor was too strong for me (and I was also a little put off by a large chunk of fat or gristle in my first bite), but the flavor was meaty, sweet and peppery from the onions, and juicy...spot on, exactly how I had it overseas. My fiance, who likes lamb, and doesn't mind the funk of lamb meat, liked the manti a lot. As for our drinks, the tea was okay, nothing special (wasn't served the traditional way with milk or jam), nor was the compot (fruit juice drink) anything to write home about. Between the two servers, the Uyghur woman didn't seem to speak much English, so I got by on elementary Russian, for which she was very kind and patient. The tall, young Kazakh man's English was perfect though. If you are unfamiliar with Central Asian cuisine, Cafe Kashkar is a welcoming and safe introduction. I am trying to find my way back to Central Asia as soon as possible, and until I'm brave enough to crack open the can of horse meat I got in Astana, Cafe Kashkar is a great place to temporarily quell my yearning and hunger. read more

So the fried lagman, those hand pulled noddles will make you thinking of the next time you can come back, so full of flavour and amazingly cooked you would never have had better noodles in your life. Also the mixed grill, ok those ribs, veal... I'm lost for words so juicy, so awesome (I never say that word lol) but I am lost for superlatives. I decided to give this place a try and take my parents here to dine judging on the good reviews left. Honestly It seems like the people who left great reviews for this place haven't tried any of the Uzbek restaurants in brooklyn. Came here on a Wednesday. The place is small but in all honesty I'm more interested in the food. The plates were mismatched and tiny. There was only one waiter working the whole place by himself and by the looks of it one female chief in the kitchen. To start they ran out of a few of their advertised soft drinks. The kebob came out dry with lots of ligaments that I couldn't even chew. Not to mention no sauce to go with it. Plov was alright. Fried Lagman was good. The eggplant salad wasn't what I was expecting. It almost tasted as if it came out of a can. Could be wrong. Overall we were not satisfied. I felt embarrassed in front of my parents for bringing them here. They were not happy with the food. Hope this review helps. I would not come back here. read more

I'm generally a fan of Central Asian food, but Cafe Kashkar--owned by a Uighur family from Uzbekistan--is one of my favorite spots. Like many other Central Asian spots, most of the dishes are on the small side... kind of like tapas, but without the pretentious price tags. A few highlights: the fried lagman, a moderately spicy noodle dish topped with a fried egg; manty, large ravioli-like dumplings stuffed with lamb and sauteed onion; and skewers of grilled meats, especially the perfectly-charred lamb ribs. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go for the chilled meat and vegetable salad (I believe it was the otush salad, but don't quote me on that), served with charming assloads of dill. And who doesn't love charming assloads of dill? For what it's worth, our server--the owners' son--was absolutely spectacular. And the food was cheap: two of us ate like a pack of ravenous hyenas for a grand total of less than $40. So if you don't have the appetite of a pack of hyenas, you'll surely spend far less than that. read more

Yup. Still shite 2 years later. Dragged back here by a friend who kept gushing about it but couldn't remember the name. So imagine my face when we arrived. I instantly lost all respect for said friend and have put him on the "never trust his advice or recommendation for restaurants ever again" list. Bowl of soggy noodles coated in a half a pint of oil and barbarically cut vegetables. Good news is that since then, a place that actually serves freshly pulled Lagman opened up called 'The Handpulled Noodle', in Harlem. It's literally on the other side of the moon if you're not used to traveling above Columbus Circle, but hey Harlem is the new Williamsburg haven't you heard and unlike this place, is worth the schlep. read more

As others have stated, most everything is mysteriously listed as an "appetizer", but these ain't your mama's appetizers. They will explode you. We had a long day watching the large be-makeuped Russian ladies tanning their boobies at the beach and were really looking to get a snack before exploring more of the Brighton Beach goods, but that was not to be. I'm not sorry. For two, we ordered the geiro lagman, lamb pilaf and 4 manty. The pilaf was our fave - creamy and savory. Lagman was delicious and the noodles perfect. The manty were ginormous. We couldn't even finish. This was probably our least favorite of the three, but still good and would likely have been better had we not just inhaled two big plates of meaty carbs. We saw other folks bring beer but I'm not sure if it's BYOB or if they were friends of the owner, who was delightful. Well I really can't judge this place well as it was our first time eating Uygur & Uzbek cuisine, so I have nothing to compare it to, but very interesting, authentic, good food. Wait staff was polite, the place was actually pretty packed, many of them familiar with this cuisine, which is a great sign. We came on a Friday for lunch when we were going to the beach. We wanted something different and more relevant to the Brighton community, so we chose this place because of the yelp reviews. It is not a Turkish restaurant as listed on yelp, but has Turkish, Asian, and Indian influences in its food. We ordered: Samsa Parmuda - four small savory pastry balls lightly fried and stuffed with ground lamb. This was actually our least favorite thing we ordered. Mix salad - very fresh, light, and healthy. Comes with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, feta. Was refreshing with the heavier meal. Ground beef kebab - nice char-grilled taste Rice (side) - good portion, plain rice Kohnoom - similar to a lasagna stuffed with shredded potato topped with tomato sauce. I have one word for this place: YUM. We've been here countless times and have tried pretty much everything on the menu, and it never fails to impress. The place looks totally like a hole in the wall, kind of pathetic decor and the TV in the corner with endless Russian pop concerts or Uzbek soaps, but the food is so delicious you'd want to come back again and again. The fact that all this yumminess doesn't cost an arm and a leg -- actually far from it - and that this is a true BYOB without any corkage fees only adds to the pleasure. The service is pretty fast; it takes them a bit of a hiccup to start delivering the food but once they open this cornucopia it just doesn't stop. You get drunk on the endless delicious stream of noodles, meat salads, pickled veggies, kebobs and samsa... Try it, you will be a convert at first bite, vegetarians and meat lovers alike. Last but not least - a beautiful touch: if you're a tea lover, order the green tea. It comes in the beautiful traditional navy blue cups with painted white flowers and matching teapots... just like in old chaikhanas somewhere along the Silk Road... read more

Amaze-balls! This place is right next to the boardwalk at Brighton Beach. I brought my friend here, who grew up on Uzbek cuisine. She was blown away by the lamb kebabs. Supposedly, they beat out most of the places she frequents in California. We got some soup called Shurpa lamb broth with potatoes, vegetables, and cut meat. For hot appetizer, we got the popular meat dumplings known as Manty and pastry Chebureki. Then came our order of both lamb and beef kebabs cooked to perfection. We couldn't leave without an order of the Polo fried rice with carrots, lamb and spices. We drank green tea in the traditional teapot. I left extremely full from the steamy meal of meats and rice. It was definitely on the heavier side, if you are used to grilled chicken and salad lunches. I really appreciated the ethic feel of this restaurant. The walls were adorned with traditional ornaments- scarfs, hats, swords. And if you speak Russian, you can watch television. There were only 6 tables in the entire restaurant, but it made it homey. I lot of locals came for take out orders. Overall, I really recommend this restaurant for those who enjoy ethnic food. Very solid Uzbek sashlik (kebabs) in a friendly unassuming small neighborhood establishment. Lots to choose from on their menu but I highly recommend the kebabs (they take some time to come out) above all else. Lamb rib and lamb kebabs were both excellent. read more

I went for dinner on Saturday night around 9pm. It's a small place with I think about 8-10 tables. The decor is either cute/kitschy, nothing fancy, but not dull or boring. It's BYOB. The true highlight is the food. We ordered the fried lagman, samsa, lamb kebabs, and some sort of shredded potato stuffed pasta shell. All were delicious, but the stars were the fried lagman and lamb kebab. I'm looking forward to going back and trying the manti and creating my own lamb-agasm. I love lamb. The service is so-so, but I didn't mind given the laid back, home cooking feel of the place. And it's very cheap. I'm looking forward to going back. read more

This establishment would make Marco Polo and his boyz cry if he decides to come back to life and devour food from the silk road. Fellow yelpers, this place doesn't deserve the 4 star average yelp rating. It's just a hole in a wall that will just surely decieve you because this is the closest to eating Central Asian/ Uighur/ Uzbek food. My friend, who is a fiend when it comes to eating Uighur food (she studied Xianjiang culture in Shanghai) ordered for me. I wanted noodles but we settled on rice. We got the lamb pilaf and lamb kebobs. We also got a lamb soup. The lamb soup was pretty good, tasted like any other homey soup that your mom would make you in the middle of winter. The lamb pilaf on the other hand was such a failure. First of all, it was at room temperature. Second of all, you could tell it was not fresh because the rice was flavorless. The lamb that they claim it was tasted like beef. That lamb kebob was pretty good but it was a bit salty. My canton ass deems too salty. Overall- ain't comin back here. No matter what. read more

One of the best Uzbek restaurants I have ever been to. Absolutely delicious carrot salad, lagman, chebereuki, meat samsas, lamb chops, mixed grill (meat dish) chackchack (desert), eggplant dish & more. The prices are very reasonable, the place has a limited amount of tables but the service is excellent. read more

OK, let me preface this by stating that my rating is based solely on the food - it is off the chain! However, the waiter / former gulag guard who 'served' us this past Sunday, 15.May.2011, was about as personable as a kavkaz ovcharka with rabies. If you can get past the surly, inattentive, Soviet-era 'service,' you will love the food - try the lagman - it is sooooo delicious. read more

This place is awesome! The lamb kebabs are amazing--juicy and fatty the way they're meant to be (yes, I've been to Xinjiang so I do know something about Uyghur food.) The samsa are also delicious and authentic, basically baked buns with a lamb+onion filling. The lagman was good although maybe a little less tomato-y than what I've had in Xinjiang and more celery but hey, every restaurant does things a little differently. The noodles in it had a good bite and were obviously handmade. Eggplant salad was great, with a mixture of pieces of eggplant and pepper doused in a delicious oily dressing. Service was friendly, quick, and unobtrusive. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

First of all the food is ok, The lamb fried rice is good, and the lamb skewer is amazing, but that's about it, the bread is lack of flavor and a lot of dishes are over priced. The service is ok , hard to get someone to help with the order. Not to mention is way all the way in brighton beach station. Could get a better food elsewhere. read more

I don't understand how anyone could give this place a bad review. What's up with all the haters? Extremely affordable and BYOB to your heart's content, and the food is absolutely delicious and a taste that you don't come across very often. My boyfriend and I spent Christmas eve there last year and it was so much fun. We brought a bottle of red and they opened it and put a white paper towel around it, a la sommelier style. They recommended dishes, and gently forewarned per the liver (although I love liver so I enthusiastically nodded). Note - do not get the dishes where the liver is over cooked. I mean, they're not bad or anything, but not what you're looking for when you're looking for liver. We're also really big fans of the meat bread (?) and the fried lagman, of course. Come here with a small group of friends and you will not be disappointed. If you live off the BQ it's a jiffy. Cute neighborhood, too. read more

I wasn't being ambitious yesterday. I've never trued Ulghur food prior, and I was too lazy to ask what everything was. So, I stuck with familiarity. I wanted to be surrounded by lamb and na'an, and was planning on it since prices were so cheap. To my surprise, the na'an that came out wasn't the one I was used to. Instead, it was a Frisbee-shaped loaf of bread. I looked dumbfounded, but rest assured I ate a good half of it. Tasted great with vinegar. The lamb kebabs were, as I put it when I was devouring through it, extremely succulent. So juicy, flavorful, and filling (I could throw in a That's What She Said right now, but I'll hold back). But, it was some of the best lamb I've had in recent memory. read more

Worth the trek from wherever you are...know that Manty requires pre -ordering, you can call ahead. Kebabs, lagman, pilafs and samsa are terrific. It was not warm inside, Russian TV is playing and many neighborhood customers carried their own - Jameson, etc. Plan on wandering around the neighborhood while you are here - fruit, vegetable and Russian grocery stores have wonderful items that are hard to find outside the neighborhood. read more
