I came on a saturday night (~7PM), was expecting to wait in line, but was seated immediately (wait.. what? there was NO line??) in a cute booth with side by side seating right behind the bar. It was the perfect view - my BF and I could watch the chefs at work on their masterpieces and we had plenty of arm space. We ordered: 1) pretzel with cheese/butter dip - tasted fresh out the oven, was on the saltier side - but we just easily scrapped off the salt, and the dip was perfectly creamy 2) emmentaler sausage - comes with a sausage with cheese bits and interesting peppered flavoring, dumplings on the side, and flavored cabbage. LOVED this dish 3) Reuben sandwich - came out hot, cheesy, crunchy, and it was totes filling Heard this place expanded 2x, so maybe that explains the short wait to get seated. What a fun surprise this was! Our daughters good friend from Germany who now lives in NYC recommended this and meets us here. We would never have selected the area or selected this type of food just because it's uncharted territory for us. We had just the most enjoyable time! Folks that worked there were terrific! I didn't get the bartenders name but he was great. Our server was Sebastian and he was delightful, knowledgeable, funny and had a full on conversations with our Germán friends. So fun! The food was amazing! We had no idea what to order but our friends and Sebastian did! I think we tried about everything on the menu... ok not everything but A LOT! So full afterwards. My husband and I came here on a weekend night to try it out after reading all the good reviews this place has. We ordered the pretzel with spreads as appetizer. Love it! As for main course, I had the Brook trout amandine with potato purée and spinach, topped with almonds. The spinach and potato purée combination was not bad, however, the trout isn't too satisfactory, it doesn't really bring out the taste of the dish. As for my husband, he had the Bratwurst and Sauerkraut for main course. This dish definitely tasted way better than the trout. Our server was pretty attentive and friendly. A super quaint, yet adorable little German restaurant in LES. I came here for brunch and had the most amazing Trout Amandine that I still dream of. The fish was perfectly cooked, and sat on top of fluffy mashed potatoes, and sautéed spinach. The almond brown butter sauce was really to die for and would probably taste good on just about anything. The selection of entrees is not that extensive and very beef/pork heavy, so probably not the best place for vegetarians, but I would return just for the trout amandine and to try the spatzle and sausages. read more

I had the alpina as I waited and it was a very refreshing drink, with the elder flower liqueur providing a hint of sweetness. Ordered the special which was the pork shoulder- it had kraut string beans and potatoes. The pork shoulder was moist tender and being smoked it had the gamey smokiness. It's was pretty awesome. Tried my friend's meatballs and while flavorful it was way too salty. Dessert- The night's special: Peach pistachio tart with almond crumble- the crust was light buttery and delicious Linzer - a little too sweet for me but there's a buttery dough with hazelnut almonds cloves and spices; good Chocolate molten cake - comped, by the waiter, it was good but nothing special Roasted plum with elder flower liqueur yogurt- it was by far my favorite, it was light and sweetly contrasted with the sour yogurt, the plums were caramelized and sweet. The food/drinks were reasonably priced but I think my expectations were too high based on these reviews... so watch out guys! The place wasn't very packed for a Saturday night 8pm. My date and I couldn't help ourselves and got soup dumplings in Chinatown 20 mins earlier (yay it was so close! had to curb a craving) so we didn't opt for any appetizers. For entrees, we got the wiener schnitzel and emmentaler sausage. It came out almost way too quickly!! It was literally like 5 minutes... Not sure if that's good or bad (if it was sitting out for awhile). The sausage was good, but I expected a little bit better... My date REALLY liked the schnitzel though. The waiter gave us a side of dijon mustard, which complemented all our entrees very well. The portions were good especially if you order a glass of beer too. A little life lesson here: The older you get, the more you feel like ditching the German beer garden scene for something more culturally genuine. They say there's no place like home, and given the urban exterior of the LES, the warm, familial vibes emanating from this place proved to be a solid find. I never thought duck of the German/Austrian variety could ever compete with the Chinese Peking I grew to love as a kid. Totally makes you rethink cuisine from the region. For the meat-lovers in your life, their sausages weigh a ton, and come with copious helpings of mustard. Perhaps that's a form of currency in their part of the world? An honorable mention to their staff, who gladly took a last-minute reservation for a group of our size. Upwards of 15 at the night's highest points. Why I took so long to finally try this place is beyond me, but I'm so glad I finally did. You will not be disappointed and there is something here for everyone, so stop reading this review and get your butt over to Cafe Katja! This place gets packed, but it's such a cute and cozy atmosphere. We sat inbetween two tables and ended up having conversations with both! On to the more important thing, the food. It was just the two of us, so we weren't exactly hungry enough for the sausage sampler, but we saw some tables with it and it looked amazing. We ended up with the trout, the meatballs and shared the brat. Woah - was not expecting my mouth to be sent on such an adventure. The trout was good. It was a thin piece, but you could taste the almond butter (and the almonds on top) and it really changed the flavor of the trout for the better. The sauce, spinach and potatoes just finished off the dish perfectly. Onto the meatballs - the best tasting meatballs (aside from the ones i make) you'll ever have. So flavorful and the sauce they are in just really pull all the tastes together. So moist, so juicy, so perfect. The brat was good, nothing outstanding or amazing, but it was good. It was the perfect "appetizer" and between the three dishes, we were stuffed. We didn't get to try dessert, but it's definitely on our list for the next time we come here. Service was great and they're super friendly and patient. They will explain everything to you and even help you decide on what's the best dish to get. Absolutely delicious food. I had the perfectly seasoned Trout Almandine . The texture of succulent fish at play with the crunch of almonds was incredible. The sides were fantastic also. Simple, yet great mashed potatoes and spinach . I don't ever eat spinach on purpose, but it tasted THAT good! My Husband loved his Beef Goulash; rich, tender and very hearty. Best spätzle ever! Our server was very friendly, attentive & made great recommendations; plus our glasses were never empty. Lovely quaint atmosphere. It's intimate enough that you smell the food at the next table, yet it doesn't feel cramped. Never really had German food before so when my boyfriend selected this place, I was excited. The restaurant is very cozy in which the tables are very close and seats were provided at the bar as well. When we had arrived, we were seated right away since the restaurant wasn't packed to capacity. The tables had candles lit & it wasn't too loud inside the restaurant, perfect just to chill out and enjoy a nice conversation. He had the pork belly special with potatoes and sauerkraut. It was amazing! The skin was crunchy while the pork meat was soft & juicy. I had the Austrian Meatballs with Spring Vegetables & potato puree. This was actually recommended by the waitress and I can see why! The meatballs were perfectly cooked and paired perfectly with the potato and vegetables. Cafe Katja is an LES classic, and I have no idea why it took me so long to finally grab a meal there. Actually, I do know why - Austrian food is rarely the first cuisine I default to when considering a culinary destination. Despite not having a palate that automatically gravitates towards Central European fare, I do gravitate towards homey, welcoming restaurants that are a rare breed around New York nowadays. The room has a whimsey and charm that a lot of newer restaurants in the neighborhood don't possess. You can't force it, it has to happen organically over the span of a decade with warmth trickling down from the top. The staff are wonderful. It's worth going just to grab a drink at the bar to be near these lovely people. The food is heavy - sausages, potatoes, schnitzels, etc... There's no denying that. But you can also dive into lighter options as well if you're watching your figure. Good thing winter is approaching, as this is the perfect hearty meal to get through long, cold nights in the city. read more

Came here for dinner on 1/8/2017 with a friend and my brother. We had a pretzel in addition to the sausage sampler and the beef gulasch with spätzle. Absolutely delicious. The gulasch was tender and savory and the spätzle was just right. The sauerkraut which came with the sausage sampler was not as tart as I expected it to be. The dumplings that came with it were very good. Can't recommend it enough. We had the strudel for dessert and they were kind enough to send out some chocolate cake on the house. The strudel was absolutely wonderful, the crust was very flakey and the apple was soft (but not mushy) and sweet. The chocolate cake was on the bitter side so not exactly my cup of tea but it was good. A good meal overall I had the opportunity to eat here again recently (12/2018) and I had the schnitzel this time and also the chocolate cake again. Totally amazing. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of German or Czech food. It seems like all of the resources they have in that area of the world are limited to potatoes, cabbage and sausage. But I will say one thing about these guys : they are all deeply devoted utilitarians. It's like they were all starved in a former life and vow that no man, woman or child should ever go hungry again. Which is to say that German and Czech food is big on portions. I mean, just big. The austrian meatballs here are tasty and tender. The emmentaler sausage is a pork sausage with emmentaler cheese embedded. The food is plenty good and offers a distinct taste that you have to say is native to that area. No one who comes here will ever leave hungry. I also recommend the pretzel... it's fresh, hot, soft and chewy and just a great starter item. I've never had Austrian food before, it's been on my must-try list since the beginning of this year and with them reopening, I had no excuse. The place was packed on a Thursday night, it's twice as big as it was before which is a nice improvement. I sat right next to the retractable windows which we both loved. We wanted to share a pretzel; I suggested the Katja's Ruben for L and I got the Emmentaler Sausage. We started with some cocktails which were very sweet & tasty. The cider one is a definite recommend. Our entrees came out, portions are very generous. I actually wasn't feeling too well, I shouldn't have ordered something so heavy. I only managed to take a few bites. The quark dumplings were so... rich, the cabbage was yummy. We should've ordered some pickles to cut the richness. L's Ruben looked so good... It was the best ruben sandwich he's ever had, not that he's had very many, but all the components of the sandwich was delicious. I was able to have 1/3 of the sandwich practically all to myself when we took it home. I had to convince him not to eat it all at the restaurant. Anyway, I guess our waitress forgot about our pretzel, we mentioned it to the other waitress who gave it to us on the house. L really appreciates little gestures like that. He loved the pretzel, it was hot and salty, perfect. It was too salty for me, so I had to take most of it off. The 2 spreads were very creamy, perfect with the pretzel or any bread... I think we were the only table drinking cocktails whereas everyone else had either wine or beer. Next time, we'll definitely try their beer, it's available in huge liter steins. We ended up sharing the following: home made liverwurst w/red onion jam - I wasn't too into the liverwurst here. It had too much mineral after taste. However, S gobbled it up without a problem. S actually finished the whole plate and I had one bite. landjäger / home-made pickles / liptauer - S was explaining this to me and it didn't sound too appetizing the way S was describing it, but I actually loved this dish. austrian meatballs / roasted vegetables / potato puree - this was good, but gosh, I wish it was more spicy or some sort of heat. We ended up dipping our meatballs in the homemade mustard. Really good mustard in such a cute little pot. Katja's Margarita mit hollunderbluten - I can either like or dislike elderflower, but this Margarita contain the perfect amount of elderflower. S just got a beer and Marillen (Apricot) Reisetbauer, Austria - damn strong. I couldn't do a Schnapps. It's not fruity and you can't even tell it's Apricot and S knew Schnapps would be too much for me. The spreads were interesting but I didn't know what they were until I tried them....one was butter I think? Not sure? We ordered the Wiener Schnitzel for the entree to share between two people and it was more than enough (I guess we were not that hungry to begin with). I really liked the cucumber-potato salad, it was amazing!!! For desert we had a type of apple (apfel) strudel, but it didn't taste fresh and it came with whipped cream instead of ice-cream (I'm not sure if it's traditionally served with ice-cream or if my taste buds called out for ice-cream)....I love me my apfelstrudel! Was originally heading to another place, but saw Cafe Katja and it looked pretty quiet and cozy from the outside. We had an eggplant appetizer, Austrian meatballs with mashed potato and carrots, smoked salmon for the main dishes and strudel with schlag (that's when I found out what schlag is - German style whipped cream) for dessert. Our main complaint was that customers who arrived later than us got their meals first. I understand there's one chef in the kitchen, but food should be served in the order of customers' arrival. I can't complain too much though because once we got our food, it was fantastic. The schnitzel sandwich burst with flavor from the lingonberry aioli and had delightfully fluffy and soft bread. I'm not usually a fan of bratwurst, but my mom's was delicious. We also got the pretzel appetizer which came with interesting spreads, but I would pass on it next time. What a delightful surprise! We stopped in for lunch because if the huge open doors allowing us to sit inside while feeling we were sitting outside. But the good was exceptional. He had the bratwurst, which was so good he never dipped into the brown mustard. My red cabbage salad with apples & walnuts & a lingonberry dressing was perfect & very refreshing. It's pretty pricey--for instance almost $5 for a fresh-baked but kind of smallish pretzel and some spreads. Good tasting but, c'mon, it's just one pretzel. I had a bratwurst. It was very good. I tried my friend's goulash. Super rich and fatty in a thick sauce. Ended up my party spent 185 before tip for 5 people, 4 beers, dinner and a couple of apps. German speaking employees? Check. German and Austrian beers? Check. Schnitzel and sausages? Check. Cafe Katja has a small menu ranging from dishes from $12 to the low $20s. They have a small selection of brews (not the most extensive I've seen in the city) and the do serve liter beers which is an absolute requirement for any German speaking establishment. I ordered the Berner sausages which is essentially a cheese stuffed sausage wrapped in bacon, served with an arugula salad, and cucumber potato salad served up with two pieces of bread chopped into rectangles. Sausages: flavorful, natural casing, but the density of the sausage was way too soft, it actually took some force with the serrated knife to actually cut because it was that rubbery. That consistency with the knife was strange but it didn't detract from the dish at all. The cucumber potato salad with dill was pretty uninspiring, the cucumber was limp and floppy being drowned in the sauce and it was not the best potato salad I've ever had, not even close. Once again, it wasn't bad, just meh, ok, at least it wasn't bad. The arugula salad was similar, nothing but arugula and a ho hum dressing. The bread was the worst and they seriously get no nos for this, it was 100% absolutely no doubt about it, stale. Overall, great space, reasonably priced beers, and a good place to chill out and get some decent food. Best Austrian restaurant in the city? We arrived 20 mins before the kitchen was set to open for dinner and scored great seats - a little booth in the front where the windows had been removed so it kind of felt like we were eating outdoors (also perfect way to keep an eye on my car and all the meter maids tryi ng to issue tickets) Our awesome waiter was so patient with us as we tried to figure out what to order, as there were lots of unfamiliar terms on the menu - thus being our first time at an Austrian restaurant. I got the crramed spinach with 4 quark (a cheese similar to ricotta) dumplings, and root vegetables (carrot, onion and parsnip), with sauerkraut instead of eggs. It was so delcious i returned my platrs completely cleaned of any remnant of food. My bf got the reuben and was absolutely in love with his dish. He had hesitated because of his experience with Katz deli's lackluster rueben, but was glad he went out on a limb and ordered their version. He called it the best rueben he has ever had. My friend got the sausage (which contained cheese), with the cabbage and 3 quark dumplings. She also got a side of greens. She seemed to enjoy her meal, with the exception of the dumplings - which she prefers to be chewier. Our table got a small plate of the picked vegetables to start, which was yummy. We left katja with happy, full tummies (so much so we didn't even bother looking at the dessert menu), vowing to return sometime in the very near future. This was our first meal in New York, and I'm glad for it! The food was absolutely delicious. I was debating between the salmon, bratwurst or beef goulash - at the recommendation of our waiter, I got the goulash. The beef was tender, the soup/sauce was perfectly seasoned and the spatzle (which I've never had before) was quite delicious. My husband got the bratwurst. Also good! Ahh...what a nice and warming place it is. I was introduced to this place by a friend and I definitely have to say that I am extremely grateful. For starters, the service was very good. I came on a weekday morning and it was pretty quiet. The hostess immediately greeted me and told me that I could sit anywhere I pleased. She brought water and the menu immediately while I took in the nice ambience of the place. I really wanted to try the assorted sausage sampler but because it was a dinner-only dish, the hostess/waitress kindly recommended the Berner Wurstel, which consists of 2 sausages wrapped in bacon, a cucumber-potato salad, a frisee salad, and 4 pieces of rye bread. Everything about the meal was superb. Just enough to warm me up on that cold day and fill me up too. The waitress was also kind enough to fill up our drinks whenever necessary. I guess that the lunch scene is a tad quiet or maybe it was just one of those days but if it were like this during every morning, I would definitely stop by here when I just want to study in a quiet environment. Came here with my parents and we had a really great meal. My parents were in Germany a few years ago and absolutely love the food they had, so they were super excited but also doubtful to dine at cafe katja. We ordered the liverwurst with red onion jam. It was soooooo good. It's a fun way to start off a meal, and my parents really loved it with their beer. (They said the draft beer was extremely fresh and brought them right back to Germany). We also got two salads- red cabbage with apple & the beet salad with goat cheese. Both were really delicious. Not amazing, but yummy and a healthy, light addition to the other dishes we ordered. The emmentaler sausage with dumplings was the waiter's suggestion. We loved it, especially the bacon flavored cabbage it came with. We also ordered the smoked pork sandwich- also a hit as well. For dessert, we got the one that had the longest name. It was kind of like a cheese blintz. Not very sweet at all, but we really liked it!
