I saw a YouTube video that praised the burger. Went Sunday at 2:00 p.m. to order the burger, asked for medium rare. It came out well done. Showed the server, she apologized and sent out another one. The second one was medium well at best. But I didn't want to be the guy that sent back the burger twice, so I finished it. The fry sauce just seemed like straight mayo. I'd been curious about this place but gotta admit that I finally made it here for the burger, after watching the Eater video and learning about the different patty components. The space is cozy and service was friendly and attentive. The Butter Lettuces were great to start. The burger was a little underwhelming. It was quite small and not as juicy as I imagined. I also noticed that a lot of burgers were being served - some on brioche buns and others on sesame buns. The potatoes were not crispy at all. The 'sandwich that made me cry in Rome' was pretty solid. We picked this location for our last meal in New York City. It was a great choice. All of the food was fantastic. Our waitress was engaging, attentive and very helpful. The price was definitely high when viewed to the eyes of someone from the Midwest. For four people with dinner and drinks and a dessert, the Bill was just over $500. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable. My only complaint was when I requested a specific brand of amaretto for an after dinner drink, I told the waitress that's all I wanted. Don't even bring it to me if it's not that brand. I could tell with the first sip. It was not the brand I requested. I was excited to visit Hearth, as its mission of cooking with health in mind is very much up my alley. Their commitment to using fresh seasonal produce, serving wild fish, utilizing organic meats, and remaining refined sugar and seed-oil free is impressive. The ambiance was top-notch--moody yet inviting and lively without being so loud that it was hard to hear my partner. The menu is seasonal, and for dinner, we ordered the garlic bread, the chicory salad with sesame-spiced walnuts, white balsamic, and orchard fruits, the spatchcock chicken with grilled broccoli di ciccio, melted leeks, and pine nuts, and the variety burger, which we ordered as the bun-less dinner version off the menu. This was more than enough food for two, but we managed to finish most of it. The garlic bread included four large, thick slices that tasted like a slightly elevated take on a classic recipe without being overly oily, though the round crust end was a bit too hard. The chicory salad was very fresh, and while it was a bit too bitter for my personal taste, the sesame-spiced walnuts, white balsamic, and orchard fruits were nice and helped balance it out. The mains were the true standouts of the meal. The spatchcock chicken was incredibly tender and juicy, and I loved the savory melted leek and pine nut sauce paired with the chicken and broccoli. The variety burger was easily the best burger I have ever had. The blend of organ meats provided a complex, rich, and meaty flavor in the best way without being heavy at all. The caramelized onions and fontina created the perfect umami and savory profile, and although I would have loved even more caramelized onions, there was a good amount and each bite was delicious. The beef fat-fried potatoes were perfectly crispy rather than oily and paired wonderfully with the garlic aioli. I would definitely order both of these dishes again, especially since some of the other mains looked more lackluster to me. This is the best steak I've ever had besides COTE. My friend and I shared it for $80, and it was SO worth it. Every bite was just as good as the last, no diminishing return on my satisfaction. The staff was very accommodating and even helped some folks check their large bags (some came from the office so they had work stuff with them). The interior is nice and cozy with dim lighting to set the mood. We actually came during restaurant week but didn't end up ordering from that menu given the reviews about small portions/it not being worth it. Thus, we ordered from the regular dinner menu and shared a bunch of dishes. The standouts for me were: - Garlic Bread: so flavorful! - Gemelli alla Norma: I am not usually an eggplant fan, but they tasted great in this dish! - Steak: Now this is pricey, but wowwww it was delicious Folks have recommended the Beef & Ricotta Meatballs, but I personally didn't think they really stood out. I had a Tom Collins and she had a NA wine . It was restaurant week but we decided on the full size menu. Restaurant week was $45pp. For appetizers, we shared the Buffalo mozzarella and and market chicories. The salad was large and shareable. I was torn between the meatballs or halibut cheeks. Normally I lean towards meat over fish but I had pasta at lunch and wanted something light. Our server recommended the Halibut, it was meaty and the mushrooms with the seaweed broth had so much flavor. It was a flavor explosion. There were no leftovers. My friend had a pasta with mushrooms as she is a pescatarian. Dessert was the chocolate mousse and the Meyer lemon crostata. I felt lemons and after fish paired together. While the quality of the food is good, I'm a little unsure whether the price is justified. We went family style, ordering the fava beans salad, the chicken wings, the meatballs, and the maccheroni. The chicken wings were nothing like we expected, but surprisingly full of flavor. They are TINY btw, and it's basically all skin. Nevertheless, I especially enjoyed the mushrooms in the chicken wing dish. We ordered the rhubarb crostata for dessert but I wasn't a fan. I'm a sucker for some quality bread and butter. The aforementioned variety burger in question is ground fresh every morning, and it is made of brisket, chuck, heart, and liver. There is no bun on it, but I knew that walking in and am actually in full support of that. It's recommended to be served rare, which again, I am in full support of. I have a friend who grew up on a sheep farm and he vehemently believes all good meat should be ordered rare. I respect the greats. The burger was AS ADVERTISED. Actually orgasmic. The minute we walked in, we all felt like we were in a much better mood, not sure why, they were just so inviting even though we were a little late for our reservation. (We did call in advance to let them know we would be). Our server was simply the loveliest person, so inviting and helpful. We had someone in our party with several allergies and we went over the menu and discussed what would be acceptable to order and she even made an off menu suggestion to accommodate us. Food was just phenomenal, we had the garlic bread, the asparagus, the meatballs, the pasta ragu, a cacio e pepe pasta was made for us since our party could not have the other pasta dish with pesto, and we had the fish. Everything was delicious! Towards the end of the meal, the person with the allergy issues started feeling itchy and had to leave. We went over and over the food items, our server was clearly mortified and was likely more upset than anyone in our party. She went back over the menu with the chef and confirmed that everything we ordered was free of our known allergens. While we do not know what caused the reaction, the restaurant's handling of this situation was 1000% on point. No one in our group had any ill will towards the establishment. Came here one night for dinner with three others. I loved the atmosphere, and even moreso, the seats around the open kitchen, which I didn't see upon entering the restaurant, but saw when I visited the restroom. We started off with some Warm Sourdough, which was super crusty and was delicious slathered with the accompanying grass fed butter. Burrata was also a hit, served alongside roasted autumn squash. Campo Rosso Chicories is a salad composed of shaved watermelon radish, raddicchio, in a beautiful bagna cauda vinaigrette. It was delightful and I couldn't get enough. But the star for me was the Cantabrian Anchovies. Briny and full of umami, it was perfect atop a slice of bread, lightly buttered, and finished with sprigs of dressed parsley. Entrees included Berkshire Pork Chop, which came with wonderful red cabbage and farro hit with a good amount of acid. Perfectly balanced flavors. Next, Wild Tilefish sits in a fennel kissed broth with mussels and shelling beans. We also ordered some sides. My favorites were the Sauteed Escarole and Roasted Hen of the Woods. Hearth was a 2.5 overall. They have a very nice interior and interesting concepts. Our bartender and servers were fun and helpful with making choices -- the service and ambiance were 5 stars. The drinks were also fresh and unique; the pineapple upside down daiquiri had an interesting umami flavor that i'd go back for but all of the drinks were very good. Unfortunately the food left a lot to be desired. The appetizer garlic bread was actually the best dish we had, it had a really nice lemon zest - but $14 for 3.5 pieces of bread felt a little rough. Most of the other dishes - panzanella, variety burger, octopus - were fine but nothing particularly stunning. The dishes all felt pretty oversalted, but the buckwheat pasta was borderline inedible between the salt and the flavor of the cauliflower (which was actually broccoli) and even though we shared it, we didn't finish the dish between 4 of us. Half of the physical dishes were also chipped and inconsistent and that really took away from the presentation of the food. Overall this is a place I'd recommend for high quality drinks, but can't say I'd recommend or go back for the food. read more
