One of our favorite dinner spots! The variety of things they offer is insane from sandwiches, soups, chips and dips, desserts, salads, coffee drinks, and more. We almost always get a soup and one of their cheese and dip assortments and it's always plenty to share between the two of us. Their coffee drinks are surprisingly delicious, especially their caramel syrup is perfect in our opinion. The food is served cafeteria style where you walk through the line of options and request what you'd like from employees who serve you up. There is also a variety of soft drinks with some beer and wine options as well. It is often a crowded place but we've never been unable to get a table as their upper level seating has many surplus tables. The view from the upper deck is nice too as you can watch people shopping and milling about outside. Their desserts are wonderfully done and their cake slices are generous. I love their tres leches cake! It is always my pick when pitching in for a party or for a first impression. The frosting is not too sweet as to overwhelm you with sugar, and it is super creamy and delicious. The inside of the cake is so smooth and the perfect amount of sweet. Every time I buy this it runs out quick and everybody wants seconds! The location itself is organized well and I love that you can sit on the second floor near big windows. The service is usually quick even though it is always busy. My only complaint is parking can sometimes be hard, but there is a free lot in the back to make up for it. read more

I came here with a good friend of mine before a Minnesota Wild hockey game and I am very glad I did. Service is very friendly and the overall ambiance of the restaurant is comfortable. Delicious! Came in for a to - go order and I couldn't decide what to take! I am usually not a fan of Tres Leches, even though I am Mexican. But this Tres Leches... this is a game changer. Cafe Latte is definitely a St. Paul/Grand Ave. staple for cakes and desserts. They also have a cafeteria with soups, salads and sandwiches and a pizza/wine bar on the other side. This review is based solely on their desserts. I've tried the cafeteria side once, but it wasn't super memorable. But let's talk about the desserts! Here are the desserts I've tried: German Chocolate cake, Classic Vanilla Cheesecake, Flourless Fudge Cake, Fresh Fruit Tart, Mango and Blueberry Cheesecake, and Raspberry Torte. They are all SO GOOD! My top 3 would have to be the Mango and Blueberry Chessecake, German Chocolate Cake, and Flourless Fudge Cake. All the desserts are sweet and very rich, so a slice should satisfy your sweet tooth, but those 3 are highly recommended. The fruit tart crust is quite hard, the fruit can sometimes be quite sour. I recommend getting this the summer when the fruit is more in season. The Classic Vanilla Cheesecake is good too, but every time I get it, I just wish there was some strawberry syrup or something. I have yet to try the Tres Leche, and IDK how I haven't yet, since it seems to be recommended by everyone else haha! Most of the time there are whole cakes to purchase, but if you need something for an occasion, you'll definitely want to call ahead and order what you want to ensure that you'll get what you need! On special occasions or when I want to treat myself, I usually come here and get the party sized German Chocolate cake and take it home to have with some Port. AMAZING combo! read more

This unique hangout/eatery is one of the things that make this stretch of Grand Avenue in St Paul such an interesting area. I remember hearing many years ago about how this was the place to go for desserts. Consequently, every once in a while, I stop in for a dessert. Which is what I did recently; I strolled in with a friend after eating somewhere else, and we got some coffee and cake, and relaxed for a good long while. The cake this time was unusually dry, but in my experience, they know their way around baked goods. When you walk into Cafe Latte for the first time, you might be surprised and even confused by the array of offerings before you. The counter seems to loop off endlessly in both directions, morphing into different bistro-esque identities along the way. Each meta-counter has its own cashier, so you're free to treat it like Grand Avenue's version of a food court; one has desserts, one has salads, one has... "spreads"? Like, hummus and olive spread and many other similar spread-y things. I didn't linger long enough to get a complete understanding of what you do with that section. But the far end of the motley sequence of counters is a lovely wine bar with upscale pizzas. With its large windows overlooking Grand & Victoria, it's just a nice place to relax. Be prepared to put a little extra effort into finding parking, if arriving by car. And be prepared for pretty plump prices for a cafe. And for best results, give yourself time to look around at everything they have available, and to just soak up the atmosphere in a leisurely manner. read more

Three words: tres leches cake. Coming from someone who doesn't crave sweets or like them as much as salty foods, I didn't know I could be in love with a dessert until I tasted Cafe Latte's tres leches cake. It's the most melt in your mouth, lick every last bite, don't touch my slice, type of dessert ever. I could eat the whole cake to myself and we have it for almost every family birthday. I've tried some of their other desserts too and all were really delicious but the original tres leches still wins my heart. Besides their amazing desserts, this is a great fast casual lunch spot for friends and family. It's more of a daytime type of restaurant. Good salads, soups, sandwiches. For the cakes alone, I give this place five stars. What other bakery has a line out the door on weekend nights and is busy every other time of day? They're mouth watering good! German Chocolate has been my fave since childhood - can we say consistency?! But their cheesecakes, tres leches, and fruit tarts are all phenomenal too. If you don't feel like satisfying a sweet craving, they have some of the best soups I've ever had along with a great selection of sandwiches, salads, and spreads. It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to write this review. In general I try to stay positive of all places even when they're not stellar because it is people's jobs. I also believe wholeheartedly that people don't wake up in the morning wanting to ruin people's day. Therefore I hope if the owners read this they take this as constructive criticism to either create a better environment for their employees, or figure out who they want as their new target market. I came in today as I have frequented this establishment for about 20 years. I know the menu and the people pretty well. I was hopeful for them during the pandemic as I saw them take an obvious hit on their sales. I thought they responded creatively, and we're generally resilient. I did notice a strange change. The majority of their very long standing employees, were gone, but the general vibe of the place stayed. Today I walked in and recognized no one. I walked up to the counter and ordered two medium London Fogs, the person said we only do small or large, then took out a salad bowl. I said ok, two large London Fogs. He said what is that? I said it's like a tea latte with honey and sometimes lavender. He said, do we make those? I said yes. He said ok, and turned around and asked the other person (server/barista) about a London fog. They proceeded to throw a tea bag in water and put some left over foam they had in their froth cup. I took a sip and asked if there was vanilla, they said no and added three pumps. I tasted it and it wasn't even remotely close to a London fog (probably not earl gray). I walked over to the other side asked if anyone has ever made a London fog, they kind of slow blinked and directed me to the manager. The manager was busy chatting with another customer (which is totally cool, and needed in order to build relationships and brands) he stopped to ask me what's up. I said I hate to be this person, but I gave him my cup and said does anyone here know how to make a London fog? He said sure that's tea and coffee , and turned to the staff. One person actually knew that it was earl gray with milk and vanilla and I said, awesome! Will they make that for me? The manager said, great problem solved she'll have it right up for you. While I was waiting a different barista asked me how long I've been coming here that I remember what a London fog was? I was honestly a little taken a back and was like, I've been coming here for a long time, but it's a pretty common coffee shop/cafe drink. If you actually stayed with me this whole time, thanks! Do I understand that this is a first world "whiney issue" of course, there are so many coffee shops we could have left and gone and never said a word. However, this place is kind of special to my wife and I, and we wanted to come and read and have some London Fogs. The reason this interaction matters is customer lifetime value. We planned on eating here as well, but obviously no longer in the mood. We like to frequent here, but when the feel and people/culture feel so different, less caring, less competent, and there is an obvious lack of passion in working here. Then the first thing I think of is that the owners no longer care enough about the employees to imbue the culture they once cared about. As someone who has a deep passion around customers, guests, and employees I am extremely loyal to small businesses precisely because they are passionate about their employees and the community they serve. Today was disappointing for a lot more reasons than the tea. Edit: I forgot to include helpful /constructive tips. 1) create an environment where your employees feel safe to say they don't know something and engage more Sr associates to help them. 2) the employee vibes felt dismissive of their customers (and yes it was busy). I also heard the table next to me complain that the employees weren't making eye contact and kept directing them to different lines to order their desserts and pizzas but no one was helping them. 3) appreciate when customers care enough to give you feedback, there are endless me too products and competition is higher than ever. We all have choices and vote with our dollars. No one wants to see a family owned business shutter. read more

They're one of the best this town has to offer. 1. Cakes I am very proud to say that I have tried EVERY single cake they sell, multiple times at that. My favorites are: - Tres leches (chocolate): I really like this one. I always get it as a whole cake. They don't have party size for this one. Be ready to fork out some $36 or more. - Tres leches (vanilla): too much cream and too much sugar you can actually taste. I used to like it a lot, but not so much these days. - Caramel tres leches: nah, not for me. too sour caramel. don't feel like eating cake. - Coconut tres leche: okay this is quite good actually, especially if you like coconut. Occasionally the flake will get stuck on your throat and you will think you'll die now. But you'll survive, don't worry. - Streusels: all their streusels are good, especially peach and blueberry. not so good cakes: - Raspberry cream torte: it tastes like eating jam with bread. really not my kinda cake. it also has that weird after taste too. - Cheesecakes: actually not bad at all. If you like cheesecakes in general, maybe try it out. - Turtle cake: keep hearing it is their go-to cake. I hated it. reminded me of the poor boy who had to eat the whole chocolate cake in movie/musical Matilda. Just makes me wanna vomit. I do like to eat the walnuts though. rare cakes: - rarely they make banana cake, carrot cake, banana walnut cake etc. Those are amazing! just call ahead to see if they've got any. Otherwise, those aren't always available. 2. Food I really like their food. Salads are great, love their soups as well. Great food. 3. Service Well it is self service if you choose to sit down and have a meal. But still, you interact enough with the cashiers and they're great. I don't really recall having a bad encounter with them. 4. Live music Sometimes they have live music in the bar area and it is great. good food, great cakes and music? and did I mention wine? sign me up! 5. Ambience It is a 2 story establishment where you go upstairs by walking up the stairs in the middle of the restaurant. Too short dresses will be weird, I have done. was very self conscious as the stairs have spaces. Could be a casual dating spot or serious cake obsessed's get together. 6. Parking Depends on when you come, but usually a hassle. All the street parking spaces are always full and most residential areas nearby don't allow parking. I want to make it clear that this place is not expensive per se, but not cheap. Just 1 cake and you are 40 out, add another slice or a coffee, then it'll add up real fast. Problem: well I have been their loyal customer since 2009, and I come here once a month.. so I am very confident to say that they have increased their price during the last decade but very little. So how to they stay afloat? Well the size has truly gotten smaller. take tres leches, sometimes the size of the cake looks the same, but when you cut the cake, you will realize there's hardly anything to eat but cream. Great spot to grab a salad and soup, or a plate with multiple types of salad. It is cafeteria style, but the food is fresh and the staff is helpful. I personally had the two salad sampler, one Greek and then the star of the plate - the Curry Chicken Salad. The salad had Couscous, apple, carrot and spinach along with a curry dressing along with plenty of grilled chicken pieces. Cafeteria style, with trays and all, but excellent bus service for when you're finished. Stations all along the way for utensils or self-bussing dishes and trays; water stations for free iced water. Deli sandwiches made to order, as you look on. Hot soups (a variety of both cream- and broth-based) that are very delicious. My only caution is, don't get soup when the Cafe first opens; it often will not be hot enough as you repair to a seat, and they adamantly do not have a policy of reheating food (I was bluntly told, "We don't have microwaves, so we can't reheat soup! So, what do you want!") Perhaps it was an off-day, but generally the food service is congenial. Towards the end of the cafeteria experience, you'll avail yourself to free water and fresh-cut lemons, as well as butter for any pieces of bread that come with soup. Take advantage of this! Or, come later, skip the line and get fizzy water, lemons, and butter for free at any time. The general atmosphere if casual and groups of two or more. It's a lunch spot! Don't know what all the fuss is about. We ordered 2 pieces of cake for a late night dessert. Wife ordered the chocolate cake with buttercream. The buttercream was flavorless and the cake although moist tasted like a cake mix so basically bad. I got the classic vanilla cheesecake. It had a dough pie crust. Who makes a cheesecake with a pie crust, it should be a graham cracker crust. Also we paid about $8 a slice for 2 horrible desserts. Staff was friendly. No pics of the debacle. read more

My favorite thing to get is the Tres Leches cake as it fluffy whipped cream and it soaked with the milk. I have professed my love to this cake while I am eating as ridiculous as this sounds. Its the bomb DOT com or as young people say nowadays "it is LIT". Pizza that is a must try is the Nacho Pizza as that is yummy and the chips as this place is sooooo good. That it helps make it a great pizza. It is a good meat option pizza. If you are looking for a Veggie option, you should check out the Margherita pizza. I was pondering what makes a good pizza, from minimal deliberations I think it is the based the pizza dough and the sauce. Cafe Latte has an amazing base for pizza. Lastly the space is big with an upstairs eating area and it is clean. So a noobie mistake that I learned from a Cafe Latte returner is not walk toward the "back area" other cake/pizza area in my first visit.
