I've mentioned my quest to try every panaderia in the area and Papa Chuy's has shot straight into my top 2-3. It's in the former Vegan East space, on the first floor of a cute old building. They have a few seats but it's mainly a to-go spot for lunch sandwiches, pastries, and great vibes. The staff (and owner) always greet each customer and make sure they're taken care of. Each time I've been asked "Have you been in?" and "Are you familiar with what we offer". Never have I left without a "What did you think? Can we do anything to be better?" Putting aside the fact that the pastries are excellent, which they most definitely are, I would support Papa Chuy's 100% on the people alone. Tried some pastries from this place after a night out in uptown. Convenient location; I was lucky to get a free spot right in front of the store. It felt a bit awkward to be forced to ring a doorbell for what looks like a residential 4-plex to be let into this store. Service was great as the lady who helped me answered my many questions about the pastries. The pastries looked beautiful, and were priced very low. Passed by this place thrifting and I can't believe I hadn't been here before! Service was great and very friendly, highly recommend the horchata and iced hibiscus tea. While I didn't try the bakery items, they looked delicious and seemed to be sold out of some of them by the time I was there. Breakfast burrito was great as well. I really love this bakery! I've been searching around the Cities for a good panadería, and this is easily one of the best. A couple of times I came in and they were completely out of bread--but the owner was kind enough to text me when a fresh batch came in, which I really appreciated. If you can, definitely try to grab the bread when it's fresh--it makes all the difference! The pricing is pretty reasonable for Minnesota, especially considering how few panaderías there are around. Walked over this morning for pastries and coffee. The pastries are lined up when you walk in and you are given a plate and tongs to get all you want. The pastries are in varying price ranges. Only suggestion is a few more signs of what all the delicious pastries are. Coffee was good and hot and served in to go cups which I like even when eating in so that I can take it to go. We got one strawberry pastry and one bread that was stuffed with cheese, ham and jalapeños. The bread was light and fluffy and a great complement to the savory interior. They toasted it for me when I asked. There was no menu out but after we ordered we heard others order breakfast sandwiches which looked amazing enough for me to return tomorrow. I wasn't expecting much since the selection of their bread wasn't even that big for a panaderia but let me tell you, every single one pan dulce I had from here was great. My favorite one was their cheesecake bread not too sweet and quite dense def a 10/10 Bakery is located inside a house but easy to find their entrance. This is now one of my top 10 bakeries for sure. This weekend, we tried this viral local Mexican cafe on Lyndale for incredibly affordable and comforting Mexican sweet breads. The aroma of fresh baked bread fills this tiny cafe as an extensive collection of pastries is continuously stocked from the kitchen oven. We tried numerous pastries, as well as one of their three sandwich offerings. The chicken sandwich was made with fresh ingredients in their fluffy in-house bread, with jalapeños for a rather fiery kick. For the price of USD 1.5-2, you can find a buttery empanada, an airy Concha with a sweet Vanilla shell for the perfect crackle, or even a tender bread roll stuffed with chicken and zesty jalapeños. While we did find their sponge cake and flaky pastries to be a little dry, this place definitely gives value for money with their authentic Mexican breads. read more

I am so glad a Mexican pastry shop opened up a few blocks from me. Welcome to the neighborhood! First off, let me say that some of these reviews show that people aren't educated about Mexican pastry tradition. These pastries are made with lard and are, indeed, made to be dry. You are supposed to eat them with coffee or milk. If you want a moister pastry, ask the people working which are their pastries with a higher moisture content. Hopefully that helps you have a better experience. However, in general, yes, these pastries are drier (and it's not a mistake). Customer service here is great. I know a lot of the Mexican pastries but they were really helpful and told me about all of them. They are more than willing to help guide you. Service is great! I ordered a strawberry empanada, which was delicious! I also ordered the breakfast burrito because it was 1:30 and I hadn't eaten yet. It was spendy (I don't think anymore expensive than everything else is right now) but it was worth it! Burrito was made fresh to order. Walked it home and it was still piping hot! Came with a salsa on the side. It is also a generous size, it's not a small burrito. Highly recommend visiting Papa Chuy's. I'll definitely be going back to try out more of the pastries and find my favorite! read more

I live in Oregon. My bestie and her daughter moved from here to Minneapolis area awhile back. I wanted her to have a Mil Hojas cake for her birthday since I can't be there with her to celebrate. Found Papa Chuy's here on Yelp a few days ago. . I called them and asked if they could make her one and deliver it to her two days later. They were so helpful and accommodating. It was not a close-by delivery for them. It probably took them 30-50 minutes each direction, but they didn't hesitate and sent me photo confirmation upon delivery. Made the whole process extremely easy. Great communication and service all throughout. My friend got her cake today and Mil Hojas is her favorite. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.
