They have a HUGE variety of food options...everything from a fresh fried griddle area, another fresh made area, a salad bar, pre-prepared foods in plastic containers of every type, pastries, cookies, chips, canned & bottled beverages, etc. All of these options are wonderful for people that are stuck in the hospital as a patient or a visitor, not to mention the hundreds of staff. 2. On the other hand, this is a hospital. I wonder about the virtue signaling of the "putting plants forward" initiative (see photo of sign), especially for someone like me that has managed to reverse my metabolic disease & dramatically improve all my blood labs by consciously & explicitly eliminating this stuff with the help of my physician. Worse, they have plenty of chips, cookies, pastries, and sugary beverages. But I also have to keep in mind that everyone has the free will to eat how they choose. And they have plenty of visitors & staff that can eat they way they choose. Hummm...so confusing. I'll let you decide for yourself about the morality all of this stuff. I wouldn't have thought much about these things if it wasn't a hospital and if there wasn't nutrition commentary throughout. Why not just offer the food without the messaging? 3. The dining area is impressive. It isn't fancy. But it has a killer view across the Mississippi and the West Bank (see photo). It's also large with a raised deck area in back. 4. Finally, I had a funny experience with a staff member. I happened to sit at a table next to a medical staff employee in full blue scrubs, face mask, and blue cap. When I sat down, she looked at me, she grabbed her purse, and she moved it from the floor near me to the floor on the side of her other leg, seemingly protecting it. Paranoid? Is there a lot of crime in the cafe? I was definitely worried about my Mom's heart procedure, not plotting to snatch someone's purse! Rebecca's bakery is one of my favorite so far. All the rich tasting, true Italian pastry selections was fresh and enjoyable. I feel more confident about the freshness of the pastry because they do the baking on site. We got their Classical Italian Birthday cake, Crostata, Biscotti and Veggie Pizza; let's just say it was hard to decide which one to get so I know I will keep coming back. I love that their bakery produces are handmade and they "support Fair-Trade certified distributors" got me love this place already. Their customer service was great and so welcoming. I happened upon this bakery quite by accident, but I am a customer now for life. I ordered the Crema al Ciocolato for my daughter's birthday (her first day of classes as a new incoming freshman at Hamline) and the owner and his wife were very accommodating and went above and beyond! Rebecca's bakery has fabulous desserts. The hardest part is choosing which to try. First time visitors should pick a few and share. I always bring out of town guests here for dessert or pick up several options and take them home. Amaretto, Biscotti, Baklava, and Crostata are some of the best. If you want a custardy indulgence try the Fruit tart and Tiramisu are one of a kind and the best in town. I rate the desserts 5 stars. read more

I've had several desserts from Rebecca's Bakery and enjoyed all of them, but especially the tiramisu and chocolate cake. They are so moist and flavorful! Also, the apple turnover is light and flaky. Nothing seems to be very sweet, like there is less sugar added then average bakeries. Everything is beautifully made, so it's hard to choose one treat. read more

It's always been a place where we feel comfortable gathering, sharing food, and honoring tradition. I arrived around 10:00 a.m. to help arrange tables as people came and went during the whole experience. Everything was going well until, suddenly, a staff member approached our table without greeting or explanation and told us, "You have to leave now." Naturally, I asked why, and he replied, "We need your tables... , " Is there a time limit? I asked, Yes, when we are busy," then walked away. As you can imagine, the group was quite shocked. The interaction felt abrupt and out of character with the hospitality we've come to associate with the restaurant. I did my best to calm everyone and encourage them to continue enjoying their time, but the moment left a lasting impression. I want to be clear--this is not about assigning blame or raising concerns about bias. Our group was diverse, and I believe the issue was more about how the situation was handled than anything else. As my wife pointed out, a simple, polite explanation would likely have led to a very different outcome--and cooperation on our part. I contacted the Owner, Patrick Bernet, over 3 weeks now, but he never acknowledged my email or my calls... I don't want to raise the race card, but his attitude is now on record...! I especially liked the cinnamon roll and the way the sweet frosting contrasted with the hearty dough. They also have a variety of rye bread, which can be difficult to find at most bakeries. The space is bright and inviting, and the staff was friendly and happy to answer questions. I'm a huge fan of their philosophy over and love that they are supporting local, regenerative agriculture through the ingredients they source.
