Cafe Mado in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. I went on a slow, snowy day for a late brunch. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, walking me through my extensive questions and let me sample their alpine soda. I ordered the red endive salad to start. A colorful plate of red leaves, brown candied pecans, white ricotta, and dark blood orange slices- seasoned with a vinaigrette. The palette of the salad was bitter/acidic, but smooths out with the shredded ricotta and pleasantly penetrates with the occasional sweet crunch of the candied pecans. (8/10) I ordered the omelette and the fingerling potatoes. Omelette was pretty, and was pretty solid (hard to compare and nothing to judge). The fingerling potatoes were interesting in that the sauce was whipped/foamed up, which gave it a much lighter, airier texture as opposed to a thick, heavy mayonnaise dip. (7.25/10) I love the interior of Cafe Mado, you enter the restaurant and walk right alongside the kitchen, which is an engaging first impression. This is contrasted with the majority of the restaurant's space, which features quiet seating, and the back atrium is so pretty. Came here on a Sunday night and had an absolutely lovely time. My friend let the staff know it was my birthday and they wrote a handwritten card, gave us a free drink and a free dessert. Our waitress was incredibly kind and the inside is so beautifully decorated and perfectly moody. We started with the baguette and butter which was delicious, the sunchoke which our waitress recommended and is an absolute must get, and the cabbage which was perfectly crunch and dressed. For our entrees, we got the tagliatelle which was perfectly al dente and the rib chop which was so juicy and cooked perfectly. We ended with the financier which was a deliciously moist cake and complimentary buckwheat gelato which was nutty and delicious. Great to see the team from Oxalis back! Came here with a friend last night and tried 5 dishes and there were no misses, including the cabbage and wild rice, among others. They change the menu so often that it's not necessarily worth it to get into the specifics, but that is one of the best things about this place - they keep you coming back for more! I really enjoyed the wine selection as well. There was a funny moment where we talked about the music being a bit too loud and it was lowered exactly one second later. This is a very nice spot close to the Brooklyn Museum. There's seating inside and out back. The kitchen is upfront and I liked that you could see how clean it was and also talk to the chef. They use fresh, local ingredients, so the menu changes often. We enjoyed the smoked turkey sandwich (wish it had more cheese) and the woodear/cucumber salad. I liked that the French fries were fresh cut, but i would have preferred them to be thicker and browned. We ordered at the register and they brought the food to us, but didn't clear dishes as we finished eating. Note: they run out of pastries early. I am very skeptical of brunch and have maybe never been to a brunch spot that really inspired me. Until now. We love their sister restaurant so we were excited to try this. We loved everything. The menu isn't terribly large so I was a bit nervous. A table nearby got the pomme paillasson, which we probably wouldn't have gotten without seeing first how delicious it looked. It's a fancy hashbrown, fine. But the aioli is outrageous. I would've bought this by the pound. And we subsequently put it on everything else we could. The Caesar was one of the best we've ever had. Each leaf was delicately dressed in the flavorful dressing. Lovely texture to each of the leaves that we could individually grab and enjoy. Turkey, poblano, avocado was nice. Probably the least interesting but still so good. Not a HUGE focaccia fan but, again, with the aioli from before it was great. Ended with the sausage, egg, & cheese sandwich at the recommendation of our waiter. This was lovely. The sausage was not your average sausage and had really nice kick to it. The drinks were delicious, maybe even better than we were expecting. The place itself has such a nice ambiance that's not overwhelming despite having a ton of tables. I loved everything about this place. Its small door opening is deceiving because when you walk to the back is like a garden oasis. We stopped her for lunch. The plates are not large but delicious with flavor. We had the pasta dish, fries, salad that changes regularly, sausage egg and cheese sandwich, chocolate chip cookie, chocolate sponge cake. TLDR: another great spot from Redwood Hospitality that is now one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I've been so sad that Oxalis has been closed because it's one of my favorite restaurants in NYC but right now I'm so super excited for Cafe Mado. It's the same great food in the same space that I've loved - just a little remodeled to include a cafe during the day. Do not be fooled by how understated the menu is; everything was more special than they appeared. We ordered several things but I think my favorites were probably the Mushroom Toast, Pici with Fava Beans and Mint, BBQ Tri-tip, and the blacked yuba. The mushroom toast was made with grilled lions mane and had an egg yolk on top. It was super umami and delicious. Never had a pasta like the pici that highlighted the flavor of fava beans and it was super lemony. Loved the intermittent bites of mint too. Also loved the grilled lion's mane toast, the tri tip, and the tofu skin. Desserts sounded just okay: vanilla roll with huckleberry compote and the strawberry sorbet with chamomile, but as with everything else we had, we liked them a lot more than we expected. Also tried the nonalcoholic beverages. One was called the Grand Fir made with pine and it reminded me of the welcome drink at oxalis, which I loved. The other was with Jasmine and Pear which was floral (duh) and slightly sweet. I loved both honestly. Service was friendly and attentive (and awkward at times lol). The staff were very welcoming and worked good as a team. 5 stars on service. One of my favorite restaurants so far in Brooklyn. We came for a birthday and they gave us complimentary glasses of champagne to celebrate. We sat in the back indoor area near the bar, and I noticed they have an outdoor space that probably would be really nice to sit in during the spring. We ordered pretty much the entire menu, and one of my favorites was the pissaladiere. The bread they use was so fresh and crunchy. There was also a summer melon iced dish that stood out. Their menu seems to change all the time, so might not be worth it for me to post all the standouts but the general theme was you can't really go wrong with whatever you order.
