Café Maria is a small café that opened in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1998. It was founded by Portuguese immigrant Maria Silva. Originally from Ponte de Lima in the north of Portugal, Silva immigrated to the United States in late 1972. She would eventually settle in Provincetown, which at one time had a large Portuguese immigrant population. It was difficult at first to learn a new language and customs, but eventually she found her niche working as a baker and teaching English to Portuguese immigrant children. In the late 1990s, an ice cream parlor by the beach went up for sale. Silva decided to purchase it and make it her own business. Today the café is open for breakfast and lunch and serves an array of fresh baked goods, sandwiches, wraps, salads, smoothies, coffees, and shakes. Staying true to the roots of the business, Silva also continues to proudly serve Gifford's Ice Cream at the café. My family and I visited Café Maria on our recent week-long trip to the Cape. We spent the third day of our trip entirely in Provincetown. Before embarking on an early morning Whale Watch cruise, we decided to see if there were any good places nearby to grab a quick breakfast. Café Maria had great recommendations on Yelp so we decided to stop there. For coffee, my sister-in-law had an Iced Caramel Latte while I had a Hot Mocha. Both drinks were very flavorful and quickly woke us up for a day of fun activities. For food, we all decided to get some breakfast sandwiches. We opted to get them served on Portuguese Muffins, which are similar to English Muffins but much sweeter and fluffier. My wife had "Eggs, Cheese & Sausage", our son had "Eggs, Cheese & Bacon", sister-in-law had "Eggs & Cheese", and I had "Eggs, Cheese & Linguiça". It's morning time in PTown so we decide to try The Greek place aka Cafe Maria's for some morning grub. I figure no issues The Greeks do a fine job serving breakfast but NOOOOOOOO! I start off with review of the menu I order a bagel, toasted with butter with a side of sausage. Now the girl behind the counter is having a moment I hope because she utters something back which makes no sense, however in a nutshell she can't do that, but if you add the sausage to the bagel it's OK. I'm thinking you gotta be kidding me so I capitulate and then ask for OJ aka orange juice. Assuming it was gonna be fresh squeezed I was happy until a bottle of Tropicana showed up and I said no way Maria this ain't happening on the OJ. The food comes through the window in a baggy like I'm a to go breakfast person. Ohhhh boy! But then I open and looked at bagel with no butter or its not toasted and this lifeless tasteless slice of sausage that makes Jimmy Dean sausage taste good is now ruining my bagel. Can't think of a worse way to start the morning. Greasy sausage with no butter or toasted bagel just plain sucks. Within an hour that lifeless sausage came back to life in ways you couldn't image. Very inconspicuous and doesn't look like much, but they open earlier than most places. It was difficult to decide, since everything smelled amazing!! I landed on the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant and it did not disappoint!! The coffee was decent too. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area again. read more

Quick stop to grab a latte and a cafe mocha. You order at the window. Super hot. Quick service. No sleeves to insulate the hot cups. Luckily we had cloth masks so we used them to hold our drinks. The coffee is hot and delicious, Maria's breakfast baked goods are homemade and too tempting not to partake, her breakfast sandwiches are made with scrumptious care. Maria goes above and beyond with her sandwiches. She arrives very early every morning to bake delicious rolls. I've often had the roast beef with provolone, lettuce, tomato and onions served on a warm baguette. I've eaten here many times and it's been consistently good. I find that most businesses are at their best when the owner is onsite and this is certainly the case at Maria's. The one caveat I have is that I wish Maria's was larger, they do a great job of getting the most out of the kitchen and prep area but it's not so attractive. But first and foremost it's a sandwich shop and can compete with all of the other markets in town. read more

I only stopped in here briefly to get an ice cream, so can't comment on the food. However, there were a few problems. I ordered a cone, but wasn't asked if I wanted a sugar or cake cone. It wasn't until after I was served, and the next person ordered that I even realized I had a choice. I'd have taken the sugar cone if I'd know. No big deal, I was there for the ice cream! And, I was very disappointed by it. When I'm going to consumer that many calories, it better be worth it. This ice cream, however, tasted and felt chalky in texture. A few bites, and the remainder went into the trash. Disappointing. Given the other choices around the corner for ice cream, I would not come back here. At least the staff was nice. read more

After being fans of Cafe Maria's for the past few years, this trip will be the last. Usually we look forward to ordering sandwiches and paninis which are typically fresh and well made with delightful service, but the past two experiences have been extremely underwhelming. We decided to give it another try today, only to be further disappointed by the customer service. We decided to order a prosciutto melt (which was given to us) and a Casen's Veggie panini. Upon arriving home the Casen's was not with our order and instead we were given a completely different sandwich. We figured, mistakes happen and decided to call the cafe to determine if there was anything we could do. The service member that spoke to us over the phone was dismissive and unwilling to provide any accountability for the mistake. Instead we were told to order correctly next time! We were not upset by the mistake as much as we were by the disrespect and dismissive attitude given to us over the phone. We ended up with 1/2 of our sandwiches and were not even offered a refund or any form of apology. Sad to say that this will be our last trip at Cafe Maria. read more

We went here for lunch because the menu was rather large and had a great selection. I ordered a greek salad and added turkey. The salad was super small, and it cost me an extra $3 for 2 slices of turkey, no joke. The BF ordered the turkey club and about inhaled it, it was also rather small. My salad and his wrap were $20 which I thought was steep for the portion size. Also, it is a counter that you order from, so you may be waiting in line for a bit, but there is only one girl making food so be patient! The man also had ice cream he also proceeded to inhale. I am sure he would have given it 2 thumbs up, but his thumbs were busy scooping and of course giving me the obligatory bite. My friends and I tried this for brunch on August 24th, 2012. The lady who took our order was rude and impatient. After ordering we sat outside because the cashier told us he would bring our orders out. My two friends ordered the breakfast wrap and I got something quick and simple, a toasted bagel with cream cheese. The two wraps came out first and it was at least 10 minutes before they brought out the bagel and cream cheese. The bagel was over-toasted and tough to chew and the cream cheese must have been added right as it was removed from the toaster. By the time it reached the table, most of the cream cheese had melted off. How can you mess up a bagel? After a few bites, we walked away. I wouldn't recommend the place for breakfast. read more
