Went with 2 other friends after bike ride from Manhattan beach. Ordered the chicken wrap, albacore sandwich, Cesar salad. Exceeded my expectations. Honestly didn't expect much because thought it'd would be typical sandwich shop food. Their chicken wrap was wrapped in tortilla that looks like spinach tortilla (light green) and it was delicious. The chicken wasn't dry and whatever sauce they had in there didn't over power the flavors of chicken and veggie. The white albacore sandwhichbwith sprouts were amazing! It tasted healthy but had so much flavor! Their cesar salad was typical and what you'd expect.. but I love it when they have fresh Parmesan shavings on top, which they did! Unexpectedly I found Cafe Milan. In my mind I had the craving for coffee and a snack, made a wrong turn and found 2 coffee shops. One packed, one almost unpatronized. It bears the name of one of my favorite Italian cities and serves Illy. No doubt in my mind where to choose. I ordered an onion / garlic bialy which was absolutely the best tasting bagel of its kind that I've ever tasted. Kind, friendly staff and clientele made this the choice of cyclists, families and me! Don't hesitate to look for this place, even if out of your planned path. It's well worth the diversion. read more

Ended up here as a backup to going to Playa Visions again and it ended up being a very underwhelming experience. I was going out with a friend who wasn't from the area as well and really hoping to take her somewhere she wouldn't forget and this was much more of preferably regrettable, dull experience. Upon walking in, it doesn't leave you with much of an impression with furniture from the 80s and chairs with worn in, damaged cushions. The only thing that really made an impression was a signed picture of misty may trainer (volleyball player from the olympics) and a man who i assume is the owner. This cafe has all the makings of a local mom and pap's place, but it was a real let down with a lack of a welcoming environment, a cold staff, and food that could easily have been made better at home. If it weren't for the short distance to the beach, decent pricing and filling proportions, I would have given this place a two. But for future reference, I wouldn't be coming here again. read more

This is a great hole in the wall find!! Amazing and fresh foods. I ordered the need burger and my best friend got the bagel sandwich, avocado slices and roasted potatoes. Everything tasted super fresh and healthy! Even the burger! We both feel light yet fully satisfied unlike other places where you leave feeling stuffed to the brim. Great breakfast on the edge of the SB. We came here after a 10k that did not go super well wheeee. Anyway afterward I had a smoothie (peanut butter, almond milk, banana, noms) and some Mexican-eggy-dish that was really good. Knocking off a star for its weird ordering and table system...seems pretty disorganized but I'm sure during the week it works well for them! Cafe Milan is a staple in the Playa community...I've been going there since I was 15 and I've never been disappointed. The coffee is good, the breakfasts are great and I guess it doesn't hurt that I met my boyfriend there. I enjoyed a very satisfying breakfast here with my boyfriend. It's a really small, cozy establishment, and I think that's what gives this place its charm. The restaurant is a little hard to spot from the street. It's kinda tucked away in a little corner of a small parking lot. I had an egg white omelette that was filled with basil and tomato. My omelette also came with two pieces of toast and some fruit. I feel like I paid about $6 for all of that, which is pretty darn good if you ask me. The food wasn't particularly fancy or special, but you can definitely tell the food is fresh and made with care. I came back here again before heading over to LAX. Good, solid food and service every time! My husband and I walk here on the weekends and normally split the ham & cheese omelette and the blueberry pancakes. They have 6 coffee choices and the Vanilla Nut is the best! However, there is no AC inside, and most of the tables are outside. If you come here on a very hot day, it may be uncomfortable inside, and you'll want one of the few tables with an umbrella outside. read more

Food is really great but the prices can be a bit.. much for what you're getting. I mean some things are priced reasonably but others aren't... so it's kind of a grab bag in the revenue management department. It's cool that you have the option to sit outside but really, sitting inside is not a great alternative... small, cramped, dingy... the outside is also kind of weird. The chairs are metal and not very comfortable.. the tables are all wobbly.. everything seems really dirty and decrepit. I saw a family with a high seat for their baby and that high seat looked like it was packing some serious hepatitis, like legit. But again... food quality is on point. If they could gather the finances to invest in some minor renovations/improvements, they would definitely be doing themselves a favor in the long run. Also... the waiter service is half and half. You have to order and then they bring it out to you. Which is a little weird.. paying up front is a weird option for any establishment because you have to leave the tip before getting the service. Plus, if you can bring it out... can't you just write down the order? But I guess for a 2-person wait staff operation, it makes most sense logistically? Idk. It seems like some people who cook well came together and were like "let's use this kitchen and those benches" and.. made an establishment. This is a great local cafe that hasn't "sold out". I love seeing the same patrons every time I come here - to me that means it's a local favorite, that it's comfortable and yummy. It's proximity to the beach definitely helps, but its good quality food and coffee and affordable prices, along with nice outdoor and indoor seating all adds up to a great time. I always get eggs and sausage - not sure what it is about the sausage but it's stellar!! Side Note - you can get here relatively quickly on a bike from Marina / Culver City on the balona creek bike path! It's a great way to spend a weekend morning. They are very "cyclist friendly". I love this place! This quaint hole-in-the-wall gets four stars simply for the friendly, but attentive-enough staff. The food is simple and doesn't disappoint. Though Foodies may knock it for lacking complexity, Cafe Milan excels at providing good food at excellent prices, without any pretense. Also, they have a lot of outdoor seating. You can people watch, enjoy your food, and enjoy the day without any hassles. Cafè Milan is best saved for casual meals with friends or colleagues, not a date night spot or a place for anything more than casual enjoyment. I have reserved 1-star just to keep expectations realistic. I'll eat here 3 times a week sometimes, but you should definitely go and decide for yourself. read more

Awesome location right at the beach in Playa del Rey. Small portions, but very low prices, so you can order a few things to fill up without breaking the bank. The restaurant has a guest parking lot which is super clutch when you're late for brunch. The line was almost out the door, but the people who work at Cafe Milan were powering through the line very quickly, and I had my iced coffee in hand in no time. Tables are first come first serve, but if one person in your party hovers over tables while the other orders, you shouldn't have a problem finding a seat. I had the sweet potato pancakes, egg whites, and an iced coffee all for under $10. All were delicious, and I wasn't so stuffed that I wanted to coma out the rest of the day. The portion size was totally reasonable. Due to it's awesome location, we took our iced coffees to go, and walked along the beach after brunch. Totally recommend this place. The food is inexpensive, they have a marvelous iced vanilla latte, lots of vegetarian options (thank you!), and it's just a nice little place to dine for breakfast out of the house without breaking the bank. The coffee is self-serve as well as the water and iced teas, and you help yourself to the various condiments. This is a very social and family-oriented place. I ordered the bacon and eggs that came with roasted potatoes and sourdough toast. My friend ordered the egg white omelette with tomato, basil and garlic that came with fruit and wheat toast. Our order took about 10 minutes to come out which is understandable because it was so busy. My toast was cold and the bacon was chewy instead of crispy (however, I like chewy bacon so it was all good. Maybe you need to ask for crispy?) everything else was piping hot - my friends omelette was steaming when he cut it open. My potatoes didn't have much flavor, but the eggs were nice and fluffy. Overall this place is alright. I wouldn't wait if there was a line out the door, but if it wasn't busy and I was starving I would come back and maybe try something different. read more
