I been craving Mediterranean for like the longest time now. I also had this place bookmarked since it opened. I finally had time to try it after my busy schedule. Since I never eat around my house, and today my final was not until 7:30 PM and I was in the area, I decided to give them a call and order to go. I been craving Lamb Gyros for like ever now. So that is what I got. The staff are very nice and accommodating. My order was already ready by the time I got there. I ordered the lamb gyro plate with the greek salad and mediterranean fries and it came with 3 slices of pita bread and some yogurt sauce with cucumbers. The food smelled so delicious as I drove home. The salad was yummy, it had feta cheese, spinach, cucumber, red onions, olives, and lettuce. I think I put too much of the dressing, but nonetheless it was good ! The Mediterranean fries were so goooood. It had seasoning on it but it had a hit of tartness to it. I think they may have marinated it in yogurt probably? I dont know but it was unique and good. One of the best ttasting fries I have had other than in and out. The lamb was sooo good. It was soft and tender, not chewy or over cooked. Wanted to burst out of my normal eating spots and try something new. I came in open minded, but in the end I'm just not satisfied. Service was ok, there was about a 10 minute wait. But it is the food quality is what left me wanting more, I ordered a grilled chicken wrap. The chicken itself was flavorless, but if it was properly marinated, it was overcooked which deprived it of any good flavors. The wrap as a whole was a soggy mess and the juice ruined the pita bread. Also my of french fries were overcooked you could hear them crunching from across the room. In conclusion, I think the prices are too high considering what I was given it terms of both quality and quantity. 2nd time I been here and I wanted to order food to take to work and well I was behind this lady that was ordering and this "old caucasian man" was behind me, and after the lady order it was my turn and all of a sudden this old man went up to the register and order before me, he knew I was in line and this bat shit old man cut in front of me. I usually never really experience the so call "white privilege" but today it was front and center. I am so piss but I didn't say anything, the girl at the register should have notice that I was next I was standing there for a good 5 minutes waiting like any normal person. So I ask her "did that man just cut in front of me?" Have to say I was very impressed with the service here. I use to come here a lot when it was Theo's cafe. I have not had everything but I do love the falafel here very tasty and hearty amount. For the coffee drinkers I do recommend trying the Omari house blend coffee very subtle,nutty,smooth taste a very good cup. A sweet little spot with quality food! I got the lamb gyro plate with rice and a caesar salad. My friend got the steak and lamb kabobs with a greek salad with grilled vegetables. Since I live around the area, I had to give this place a try and see what it's all about--given that I'm obsessed with Mediterranean/Greek food! Overall the ambiance was really casual and not really what I expected. I expected the area to be more expansive or "fancy". The layout was quite small but the tables and floors seemed really clean! Regarding the food quality, the taste was good but not a "tell every person I know I about it" good..If ya catch my drift. I might be picky, but in comparison to other Mediterranean spots such as D'Vine or Olive Pitt, I would probably choose those over Cafe Moderno. In fact, the menu doesn't offer that much variety. The food is delicious and the staff is super friendly. We went in for dinner last night with our 17 month old, and needless to say, he's at the phase where he communicates in a loud tone and throws food when he's had enough. The waitress/cashier socialized with him and eased our worries. We of course cleaned up after him. Their soups are delicious, wraps, cheesesteak, hummus, everything! Okay, I have family in Greece and have spent a great deal of time there. Most places in so cal say "Greek" food but it's actually Turkish or middle eastern. Yes, there is a lot of Turkish influence in Greek food, but there is still a difference. This is the closest thing to Greek food I have found in so cal so far. The gyros are awesome and they they make great horiatiki which is what Greek salad is really like in Greece. There's a lot of stereotypical Greek/Turkish fusion stuff that Americans like. And you won't find moussaka or saganaki or kleftiko. But if you want souvlaki or gyro with an authentic Greek flavor base, go here. It's clear the owner is familiar with authentic GREEK food and that's hard to find. They also made "Mediterranean fries" which is their own invention but heavenly. It's fries with (I think) paprika and lemon juice on them. Soooo goooood. Love love love this place. Will be back again soon. read more
