This is our go-to place in Los Altos. Definitely the family favorite. I am surprised it's not as crowded as it is, because it's really better than most other downtown restaurants in our opinion, but I think they may draw more of a lunch crowd. Lately, seems we're going more frequently, and fortunately, there's a great selection so we don't get tired of it. Our regulars are the beef and lamb gyro plate or wrap, adana kebab, and chicken shish kebab. I think it's priced well, the appetizers are great, friendly owner/personal service, and always nice hot tea at the end. Initially , our did not come even after waiting 30minutes . Yummy food on a whim! We planned to eat at Opa! for dinner, but when my friend saw this place across the street he wanted to try this one out instead. I ordered the falafel plate and it was very satisfying! It was just enough for dinner and no leftovers, which was kind of disheartening because I would have liked leftovers! I was hungry and needed food and needed to get to a business meeting down the street and had some time to kill. Food was ok, but not great. I got meat, salad and rice. I would have loved to see pita with this too. Seemed to be missing from the dish. I usually gobble down this type of food but here I didn't finish the plate and left a lot. Food is okay. The staff were very friendly but the food was meh. I got a lamb and beef gyro wrap. The food was mildly warm (not hot) and the meat was extremely dry. The pita contained cabbage and tomato (not the listed lettuce). The cream sauce was very good (didn't taste like tzaziki sauce but some mayo-based sauce). They added some hot sauce that resembled hot sauce used for tacos. Not wildly pleasant. Since I didn't try the other food, I'm not really sure if the rest of the food is as dry. I've passed it so many times and wanted to try it. Finally convinced my family members to go, and boy were we sorry. The food made one of us sick, and I couldn't finish mine. Had salad with chicken. It was lunch time and I was starving! Walked in to find a cute little hole in the wall cafe filled with tons of people. We squeezed ourselves in a cramped booth since there was such limited seating. I decided to order the Veggie Falafel Wrap. I paid almost $8 for a plain wrap. When it arrived, it literally just looked like a dry burrito on a large plate. I don't know what it was, but the flavor was extremely peculiar. The wraps I have had elsewhere taste SO much better. I was unfortunately disappointed. I could've gone to another restaurant, paid 2 extra dollars for more quantity and better tasting food. The best part of the visit was the free tea that they gave to us after our meal. It was served in a tiny glass antique cup and had the most interesting flavors mixed in. I might return to find out how their crepes taste. They had a display by the register of a dessert crepe and it looked delicious. But I can guarantee that I will not return for their Mediterranean food. I usually don't put comments but this one I am surprise it's even in business. First and for most the salad in the food was at least 7 days old in a hot weather. This can make people sick, it's not about if you like the taste. Their fries the same thing, felt like they took it from last night's customer leftovers and slightly reheat it again. The five stars are not just overall. Cafe Nur gets five stars for cleanliness, friendliness, lovely casual ambiance, freshness and deliciousness of food, and service. The meat is so tender and flavorful, yet not too salty and overly marinated...its just right. The salads are crunchy and fresh, and the hummus is to die for! I consider myself a 'hummus snob' so thats a big statement for me. Hidden gem that is never crowded but a consistently fresh and delicious place for Turkish food. The gyro salad is a cut above the usual and feature a creamy, spiced avocado dressing and shaved radishes and cabbage on top. And the Turkish breakfasts are an excellent and unique alternative to the usual breakfast fare on weekdays. I particularly love the Shakuka which is eggs mixed with Onion, garlic and red bell pepper with you slather over pita. A low key casual spot but reliably good quick food. read more

Based on the yelp reviews, I suggested my wife and her friend try Cafe Nur for lunch today. Oh boy, did I hear about it when they got home. My wife had #24 - a wrapped beef shish-kebab. Her friend had #33 - beef shish-kebab plate. Both said the beef was dry, and very tough. Two very small pieces of beef in the wraps. But I guess given the toughness and flavor, it's probably just as well that it was small. My wife ordered a small salad along with her wrap for $7. With the wrap it was $18. I asked her about the salad - she just said "I didn't like anything there." I feel badly that I recommended they try the place. read more

I will think twice before I go back to Cafe Nur. This is a small storefront restaurant where you order at the counter and the food is delivered to your table. We started with my favorite appetizer, hummus and pita bread. The hummus was good but the pita slices were small and apparently warmed on the flattop grill which made them slightly crisp and more like chips than bread. I wanted a gyros plate but was told that they did not have any gyros meat so I was offered lamb and beef kebab instead. The plate came with two kebabs, rice, salad, and pita bread. The kebabs were over cooked, some where beyond well done. The salad was cucumbers with a little lettuce and enough tomato to add color. Rice was dry. Pita was the same as the pita that came with the appetizer. We ordered iced tea and needed to remind the person behind the counter before it was brought to the table. The meal was, in a word, disappointing. My friends on the east coast call this, OPUG, over priced, under good. read more

I can't speak for their food, but I wanted to share my experience with this place today. I walked in just before noon, when this place was still empty, and selected a can of soda. The person behind the counter said it was $1.90. I got my wallet out and remarked that the price was pretty expensive for a can of soda. He said that they have to get their money out of the deal, then mentioned that they get their soda (in bulk) from Costco for approximately 49 cents a can. (So their markup is almost 4X their cost?) I didn't have the time to look elsewhere, so I handed him $2.00. Instead of giving me 10 cents in change, he handed me 2 pennies! At that point, I just wanted out of there and didn't want to argue about an additional 8 cents since, in my opinion, I was already paying way too much. I love Mediterranean food and have had good luck til now in getting great food. Unfortunately, that was not the case today. I ordered the Turkish breakfast but had a couple of questions about the menu which the cashier did not know(is the sausage pork/beef/chicken and what leboni was), perhaps for lack of training he was not able to answer those. That's okay, maybe he is new so I didn't pay much attention to it. After letting him know that I wanted the pot of tea that comes with the food, he rang it up separately from the food(an extra 5 on top of the 13 for the breakfast) but he corrected it once it was mentioned and thanked us for teaching him that it was on the menu... I should have decided then that perhaps I should have gone somewhere else but carried on. Well, the plate of food is a smaller than most but decent and it's Los Altos so it's somewhat expected for the price. The tea pot that is stated on the menu is apparently just a mug, but maybe they would refill it if I asked, I thought. Things started rolling downhill from there. When they cooked the eggs with the sausage, the eggs were pretty oily but tasted ok, only problem was that the oil was everywhere on the plate when they set it on the table. I had oil on the fruit, the Greek salad, the cheese, the dried salami, the olives that at first I thought it was a strange orange hue of olive oil. Well a couple of bites into the fruit and that changed, just sausage fat all over the plate after all. Then a couple of bites into the eggs and CRUNCH, eggshells abound. So I left because honestly it was just so disappointing to have such a crappy plate of food and the guys behind the counter were just checking their phones instead of checking on the tables that I thought it was pointless. Thank god for yelp to be able to express my disappointment in a place that otherwise I had great experiences before at. I doubt I'll be back, there are better Mediterranean cafes less than 2 miles away on Castro. read more

Staff are very friendly and seem to care about customers. However the food was a disappointment. Had the falafel special (falafel balls, salad and hummus). Everything had some sort of dominant spice on it, that seem unrelated and not typical to Mediterranean food. My lunch partner ordered chicken kabob wrap, I ordered lamb kabob wrap and we shared a strawberry/banana crepe with added cinnamon-apples. My lunch partner said the chicken kabob wrap tasted good. My lamb kabob had small pieces of lamb kabob mixed in with small rolled up gyros meat. I am not a fan of gyros, so this substitution attempt makes my wrap taste less than optimal. I would have ordered lamb/beef gyros wrap if I wanted gyros. As for the fruit crepe, the crepe itself was freshly made, but the apple sauce was not heated, and there was hardly any nutella/chocolate or caramel sauce, resulting in a rather cold and bland tasting crepe.
