I highly would advise against the food here, because I got a Katsudon and my friend got the Roasted Veggie Sandwich and we wished we didn't. Both dishes are not good; very bland. There's not much to speak about regarding service, which I guess isn't a good or bad thing. I visited here last Saturday afternoon at 1:30 after my friend and I was strolling around the area. Immediately after entering I fell in love with the atmosphere! I loved the place, during the day it gave off super the stereotypical Seattle Hippie cafe vibe. To which I adore hahahaa. I'd love to see this place at night even more, I enjoy the all black interior design. Enough about the interior craze, I got a strawberry Italian soda drink which imo was pretty mediocre. I'd rate it about a 6.5/10. Nothing special about it, and probably wouldn't order again. I loved the staff and service here though! The guy I talked to at the front was super friendly and sweet. Have gone in for breakfast, both dine in and takeout, a couple times, and have yet to be impressed - it's not terrible, but not great. Cool to see such an eclectic range of dishes coming out of a little breakfast café like this, but despite their nice in-house presentation, I have yet to get anything that really made me want to come back. From what I've had, flavors are just a little on the basic and greasy side and while it's not crazy expensive, their prices aren't all that great either. I've been to Cafe on the Ave twice now! This review will be for my second time, but my first experience was equally as good (or even better!). I was extremely hungry and worried that the crispness wouldn't last overnight so I managed to eat it all but honestly this could last me days. One thing I will mention is that if you're stuck between ordering the karaage and the pork katsu, definitely go for the pork katsu. My friend originally recommended the karaage, but the piece I tried was odd. Since I didn't order it, I won't talk more about it but pork katsu definitely on top! The one thing about it that I will mention is that it was SLIGHTLY and I mean slightly, dry. That's it! Nothing to mark a star down for. The service was great, the server was kind and patient, and the food came out to our table within minutes, despite being extremely busy. I love the style of this restaurant. It's both equally a quick, cafe-esque place, but also a sit down restaurant if you order a meal! It's always filled with UW students, so it almost feels like a part of campus. Last time I came here, it was in the morning, which was super quiet and peaceful (ordered kimchi fried rice and a strawberry lemonade, 4.9/5, 0.1 down for the flies in the restaurant, nothing to do with the taste of the food). I've been to a bit of cafes and I feel that a lot of them are on par when it comes to good coffee, good food, good vibes. I felt this cafe had the aesthetics down. I loved the seating and the interior. It seems like some people come here to study which is cool. They have a rewards program for drinks. Coffee wasn't that great. I didn't finish my cup:( i got a white chocolate mocha and it was mainly milk with a slight taste of burnt coffee. As for the waffles, delicious. I had a couple of my sister's fries since her BLT came with a lot. I will say, regarding COVID precautions and safety, it was interesting. I really liked the atmosphere and the food at Cafe On the Ave. They are opened later than other restaurants during the COVID time which is great for a late dinner. The feel of this place is like a mix of Asian fusion and American food. I called in my order and ordered a fresh vegetable pasta with Chicken added. I also ordered a lemonade drink. The pasta was amazing. It had a mix of mushroom, zucchini, onions, and since I added chicken it was great. The portion size here is large! If you get a pasta you definitely won't be leaving hungry. Prices here are fair, not too expensive and yet cheap either. Food comes out fairly quick which is like 10-15 minute wait. The building itself looks a little run down when I went. The front glass door was shattered and there was a hole in the window the size of a baseball. The parking for this place is atrocious. I've been coming to Cafe On The Ave for the past four years of college. It's a cozy cafe with lots of seating. It can get noisy at times, so it wouldn't be my first choice for a study spot. Best of all, it's open late for students in need of a late night meal or snack. The Good: - Buckwheat pancakes with sausage and eggs - Greek Salad; the vegetables are tasty and soaked in olive oil The Okay: - Tomato Soup; for under $5, it was a good steal. Don't have too high expectations though cause it tastes like canned tomato soup. They give you French bread for dipping, but I wish they toasted it. - Kimchee Fried Rice; I've asked my Korean friends where their favorite place for Korean food is and this is apparently the place they like to go to. The owner is Korean and so many of the Happy Hour Late Night food offerings are Korean or Japanese. The kimchee fried rice is presented in a skillet and almost looks like shakshouka. It has a strong kimchee flavor, but I wish they had put more meat in it. The sunny side up eggs were the highlight of this dish. The Bad: - Risotto; I ordered this to-go and it was a basically a block of rice mixed with some frozen veggies and slathered in sauce. It's super dense and easily weighs a couple of pounds. After a few days of eating in my hotel's coffeeshop during the morning, I finally decided I wanted an actual breakfast and one of the desk clerks recommended a stop at Cafe on the Avenue, a University District restaurant on "The Avenue" that offers a broad menu including breakfast, lunch, coffee items, and a variety of both American and ethnic foods. The restaurant is on a single level and I had no trouble entering by wheelchair. You enter and are immediately in the dining room. The ordering counter is at the end of the dining room. You can dine-in or carry-out. If you dine-in, they give you a number and someone brings your food (you're supposed to wait for your drink - something I didn't realize until it was too late). The atmosphere is sort of a combination of history meets industrial. The Avenue is a historic district. The majority of the businesses here look and feel older and are located in older buildings. The Avenue is interesting because it includes multi-level versions of such familiar names as Target, CVS, Goodwill, and others. I ordered a single pancake along with hash browns. I ordered my usual unsweetened iced tea. I found the employee working the counter friendly, though in a more professional manner. The employee who brought the food was much friendlier and more welcoming. There's a row of seating along the wall that includes plug-ins for computers - this is a sure sign that this place is frequented by University of Washington students and they were there studying and with laptops. There's a handful of outside tables, though it involves going up a step and would not be accessible. I found a small table - the tables were nicely distanced - and was able to relax and enjoy my meal. The food was perfectly fine, though nothing extraordinary. I have a feeling they are stronger with ethnic foods and I'd heard good things about their lattes. This was practically the definition of a middling 3-star experience for me with food that met my needs but certainly wouldn't bring me back unless I was already in the area. Both the pancake and the hash browns were a solid 3-star meal. The customers were friendly, though perhaps to a lesser degree than I frequently experienced in Seattle. I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was comfortable and rather unique. I would like to experience it once the pandemic is no longer influencing it. There was really nothing wrong here. It was neither good nor bad. It was simply a decent meal at a decent price. In this area, it's one of the stronger breakfast options and if I was in the area craving a more traditional breakfast I would definitely return. I'd likely try something different, however, and I might even wait a bit and snag lunch instead. Love this place! This place always has the best music and really nice staff. Have been going here for years and I can't go wrong with their rice bowls or any Asian food. Went to eat here after the Cherry Blossom Festival at UW Square last weekend. This was my second time eating at this café since last year's festival where I had enjoyed Kimichi Fried Rice that was on point. However, I decided to try something new this time and got a combination of an appetizer Tteok-bokki and their Spicy Pork Bibimbap. The Spicy Pork Bibimbap was plated nicely but tasted pretty average and as for the Tteok-bokki they had completely forgotten about it and served it to another table. Luckily, they remedied this with a new order when confronted about it. However, that evening I fell violently ill and ended up in the ER the following day which I found out was food poisoning. My partner whom also ate at this restaurant also had food poisoning since I shared my Bibimbap with them. It has been a week and I am only now finally better and able to eat food again. I have never gotten so violently ill to the point where I couldn't hold down water and I 100% know it was whatever we ate here because I this was the only meal I had that day since I am very conscious of my caloric intake. This is definitely a first for me! Although the food was descent and pretty...its just not worth nearly dying. I love CotA! It's a great place to study or hang out with friends. The food is always good and they have really great portion sizes.

This place feels like a food court in a restaurant! You open the menu and you feel like each page is a different restaurant. They have everything from Korean served in a stone pot to Italian and everything in between! Not only is the diversity like a food court but the ordering experience as well. You order at the front, take your table number to an open table yourself and while the food will be brought to you, you have to get your own utensils. If you are lazy and you like being served, sorry but personally I like it this way. It's a small detail but it makes the ambiance feel much more chill like a cafe rather than a nice sit down restaurant. This makes it an ideal spot for a nice post class meal with a friend or even to study! Overall, a great cafe-like spot with fancy-restaurant-like food! I had bookmarked this restaurant months ago and was excited to get to try them out recently. I came here for some early morning grub, and was disappointed that they didn't have their Japanese earl gray shortcake as they had on their screens in the morning. Affogato (7/10). I've only had this dessert/drink a couple times, and since I'm not a huge expresso fan I loved that the expresso wasn't too strong and a bit more mild. Perhaps they're catering to the university students' palettes, but it gave the option for sweets in the morning and made it normalized. There's definitely enough wafer to absorb the melted expresso and ice cream, so that was a plus. Honestly, I have no complaints, if I were to come back definitely would get this again. Avacado Toast (7/10). The bread has an extremely hard and crispy crust, but the fluffy interior makes it so that you cannot cut it with a knife and try to act civilized. I tried it for about 10 minutes, then gave up and picked it up with my hand... until I realized that the avocado isn't secured at all to the bread, and watched horrified as half my avocado went for an adventure off the bread, and onto the table. I must say, that was not one of my proudest moments. The toast is seasoned with garlic as expected, and just felt like I had paid for garlic bread. Interesting Asian American fusion. Big proportions but lacks distinct taste. In other words, the food comes out warm and in good quality, but it feels like most of the food I could make at home. For instance, the BLT wasn't amazing, it came with two strands of bacon and I think I could make a better on my own with a panini press. And for the chicken fried steak dish, it seemed like there was no seasoning on the fried chicken and the gravy was too much of a liquid state. And while I like the Asian American fusion, the Asian styled dishes seems too Americanized. The tteokbokki was more sweet than spicy, and the kimchi fried rice lacked the distinct taste of the sourness of kimchi that comes with the dish. But that being said, I think this place isn't too bad to go once in a while when too lazy to cook. read more
