Outstanding crepes and baked goods at this long-standing beach cafe. The lemon crepe is about as basic as it gets (just lemon and sugar) so you really get the flavor of the crepe, which is not too thin and crispy nor too thick and pancakey. It's a near perfect food. My girlfriend and I were visiting in the first weekend of May so summer weather and foot traffic were not in full swing yet but there was still a line when we arrived for breakfast and we were more than happy to wait after reading the reviews. The alley where it's located is nice and quaint, good seating area and very scenic. To reiterate, crepes were fantastic. We got the ham, egg, and cheese and the Nutella and strawberry. Cafe Papillon is the probably the main reason I visit Rehoboth Beach. They are open seasonally all summer and then only on the weekends during the off season. They are owned by a mother daughter team and are actually French. So forget thrashers, forget grotto pizza, forget ice cream...you need crepes, coffee, and croissants. So in terms of croissants, the ham and cheese is my favorite. The chocolate, plain, spinach and cheese are also so delicious. Basically they all are delicious and I could eat a billion. The coffee is also lovely. The crepes are not something I order when I am there because I would rather eat 19 croissants but my sister and fiancé love them more than life itself. Obviously Nutella and strawberries is a win, but no whipped cream because we are watching our weight. Lines get long but it's worth it. They also sell out fast so try to get there between 9am-10am. The staff is French, which provides a nice allure to the business. The croissant was good, but not as good as what you would find in Montreal or Paris. Great selection of flaky croissants all day! They were out of the ham ones naturally (it was past lunch time), but were well stocked in everything else. We had our spinach croissants warmed up and enjoyed it right away! Flaky crust, and lots of filling inside. Unfortunately it didn't heat up all the way through, but it was still flavorful even though it's a bit cold. They also offer lots of coffee and smoothies in their menu, and other baked goods visible on their bakery case. We only went for the croissants this time around, but perhaps we'll try the other items next time! We love the location right on Penny Lane corridor. My family and I have been coming here every year for the past 10 years during our annual trip to Dewey Beach. This little French cafe is tucked away on Penny Lane, an adorable alleyway close to the end of Rehoboth Street, near the boardwalk. It's housed in a pretty little building with two serving windows--one for the crepes and one for everything else. The employees are almost all French (the cafe offers jobs to young French people in the summertime) and they're quite friendly. The food they offer is simple, but very French and absolutely delicious. Their crepes are perfectly made and can be filled with everything from Nutella and bananas to eggs and cheese--they're perfect for breakfast or a late night snack. Their breads are to die for--the various croissants they make are flaky, buttery, and by far the best croissants I've ever been able to find stateside. They offer a variety of sandwiches served on your choice of a croissant or baguette and each sandwich comes with a little side of thinly sliced carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers drizzled in a lovely, tangy dressing. My favorite sandwich is the fresh baked turkey and cheese on a croissant--the turkey is fresh and sliced to the perfect thickness (nothing like the junk you get from the deli at the grocery store) and they put mounds of shredded cheese on top (I believe they use Swiss or Gruyere cheese, or something similar). My mom and cousins always enjoyed the chicken salad and my grandma used to get the shrimp salad, and every loves the baguettes and croissants. I've had just about every croissant they offer and adore them all, and I've enjoyed many of their desserts, including their Napoleons and Opera cakes. They have a covered and uncovered seating area, so don't worry about where to sit. They open early in the morning (8am) and are open late (10pm), but do be sure to come early in the day for the best selection of breads--they sell out very fast! They can do orders a day ahead--we've often ordered sandwiches on our last night in town and picked them up in the morning to have for lunch during the car ride home. If you're looking for authentically French, delicious, affordable food, this is the place to go. I highly recommend this little cafe! read more

This is a stand and not a sit down inside restaurant. There was plenty of shaded outdoor seating. You order crepes on one side and have to stand in another line if you want drinks or other baked goods. I ordered the strawberry, chocolate and whipped cream crepe and my daughter and I loved it. I'd probably be more inclined to give them a higher rating if the crepes were a little cheaper. I tried a ham and cheese crepe which was good. I enjoyed sitting at one of their outdoor patio seats in the morning and eating it. 4.5 stars- I'm docking half a star because of poor service last night. Long story short, I was given the wrong drink and when I returned it the employee had an attitude and didn't even heat up the replacement drink properly. This is absolutely my favorite place for breakfast in Rehoboth. Papillon was around loooong before the current crepe craze and it shows. The crepes are paper thin and the fillings are delicious. For breakfast, I like the cheese and tomato or the ham, egg, and cheese crepe. I generally dislike bananas but I love the banana, sour cream, and brown sugar crepe. I also like the strawberries, nutella, and whipped cream for dessert. The croissants are also awesome and they have several kinds. My favorite are the ham and cheese, spinach and cheese, and almond croissants. You should come by 11 for the largest selection (earlier if it's the weekend). There's no rhyme or reason to the crowds here. I've been here at 10 a.m. and there was no one in line but at 10 p.m. last night the line was 8 deep for crepes. P.S.
